Administration Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Jr., President Named president of Charleston Southern University in 1984, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Jr. is also a professor of management and education. His teaching and professional interests include educational leadership, institutional assessment, higher education finance, organizational change, and student personnel services. Dr. Hunter is a frequent keynote speaker and seminar leader on topics related to higher education, and he continues to teach in the M.B.A. program in CSU’s School of Business. This fall will mark Dr. Hunter’s 22nd year as president of the University, and the 42nd anniversary of CSU’s founding. During his tenure at CSU, enrollment has increased from 1,600 students to more than 3,000. Academic programs have expanded to include graduate degrees in education, business administration, and criminal justice. The University now offers more than 32 degree programs. Church ministryrelated degrees have also grown to include youth ministry and church music. A sports medicine/athletic training program has also been added under Hunter’s administration, providing students with academic and clinical preparation for certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Like many college and university presidents, much of Hunter’s time is devoted to building and maintaining a solid financial footing for the institution. Under his leadership, CSU’s endowment has quadrupled, and alumni giving has increased by 500 percent. He has also maintained a balanced budget each year of his presidency.

Dr. Rick Brewer, Vice President for Planning and Student Affairs Dr. Rick Brewer is a seasoned Christian leader with the vision and leadership skills essential for serving effectively in the 21st Century Christian Higher Education community. Throughout Dr. Brewer’s 18-year tenure at CSU, he has played a vital role in shaping the university’s vision for a Christian campus environment, spearheading and executing countless initiatives that underscore what Christian universities are about. He has consistently and enthusiastically taken on positions of increasing responsibility, and has brought to each his unique blend of commitment, administrative skills, and Christ-centered focus. Responsible for leading the university’s strategic planning and accreditation process, Dr. Brewer is highly respected as an effective higher education administrator who has the ability to effect change while maintaining support and trust. Indeed, Dr. Brewer is a student-centered strategic thinker and transformational change-agent. Dr. Brewer holds a BS and MBA degrees from CSU and a Ph.D. in Higher Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina. In his role as Vice President for Planning and Student Affairs, Dr. Brewer provides leadership for CSU’s integration of planning and budgeting, student life, Christian ministries, denominational relations, and athletics. His family has a solid commitment to Christian higher education - Dr. Brewer’s wife Cathy, and oldest son, Jason are also alums of CSU, and youngest son, Jonathan will be a junior at CSU. The Brewer’s are members of Summerville Baptist Church in Summerville, S.C.

Hank Small, Director of Athletics Henry “ Hank” Small is in his sixth full year as CSU’s athletic director. Small took over the position of head of CSU athletics following the tenure of interim athletic director Rick Brewer, who served as both athletics director and the dean of students. Small came to CSU in the summer of 2001 following a four-year stint as assistant football coach at Wake Forest University. Small has over 30 years of experience in NCAA Division I athletics, including stints at Rutgers, Florida State, Lehigh, Princeton, and Brown. Small also spent one year in the personnel office of the New England Patriots. As the offensive coordinator at Wake Forest, Small guided the Demon Deacons offense to record-setting heights as a number of school records fell during his tenure. In his most recent head coaching experience, Small was able to guide Lehigh to a 47-40-1 record and led them to become one of the most productive offenses in the nation. Small is a 1969 graduate of Gettysburg College and has a master of science degree from Rutgers University. Small and his wife, Pamela, currently reside in Goose Creek.
