Welcome to the College of the Arts Spring 2025 Season. As we come together to enjoy incredible art, dance, music and theatre programming from across the college, I know we are all still reeling from the recent fires that tore through the communities of Altadena and Pacific Palisades. In many ways, we are all Angelenos and when our city breaks, we break. Many of our students, faculty, and staff are finding comfort in processing complex thoughts and emotions the only way we know how: through the arts. It is our calling and what ties us to our community. Through our programming, we hope to provide a bit of respite to all of you during this time of regrouping and rebuilding.
In the College of the Arts, every note, every movement, and every word spoken on stage brings opportunity for discovery and connection. Whether you are a fellow Titan, family member, or community supporter, we are thrilled to have you here. You are now part of something much larger than this single performance. You are joining a vibrant and diverse collective of artists and technicians working together to push the boundaries of their craft.
Spring 2025 brings us a season of fresh programming to challenge our perceptions and immerse us in new perspectives. Later this month, the School of Music presents “Hajar,” a contemporary opera synthesizing ancient Jewish and Islamic stories into a modern immigration tale. Theatre begins their season with “Significant Other,” a heartfelt tale of love and longing in 21st century New York City. If you haven’t yet seen our spectacular new gallery building, make time to see “Chris O’Leary: Gravity Well” – an exploration of the cosmic phenomena of gravitational waves using video, sound, and images. In May, our dancers and choreographers return to the intimate Hallberg Theatre in “Spring Dance Theatre: From All Sides,” where viewers will experience a variety of dance forms from every angle of the stage.
It takes more than just the emotional support of friends, family, professors, and mentors to enable students to take creative risks of expression. As a college, we remain committed to providing these aspiring arts professionals with scholarships, financial assistance, and the industry-ready equipment, facilities, and opportunities to further develop their skills outside the classroom. Our resolve is steadfast, but we need your continued support to sustain and expand our educational mission, ensuring our students have the tools necessary to succeed. The World Citizen Band is an international contemporary jazz ensemble that originated in Berlin Germany in 2013. The band gathers musicians from all over the world with the intention of uniting different cultures through music.
This group began as a collaboration between guitarist Ramiro Olaciregui & bassist Kenneth Dahl Knudsen. After migrating to Germany in 2011 with the wish of expanding their musical boundaries, Olaciregui & Knudsen rapidly established themselves within the Berlin jazz scene as leaders of several groups under their own names. When asked to participate in the Ecuador Jazz Festival, the two musicians decided to join efforts and create the World Citizen Band. The name of this group makes reference to the current situation of a large number of musical communities over the world, in which the constant interaction between musicians of different nationalities becomes growingly evident. The members of this group all have a nomadic lifestyle, for all have migrated from their country of origin in search for a broader view and understanding of the ever changing musical world of jazz. It is fair to say that they are all “citizens of the world.”

Drummer and composer Rodolfo Zuñiga is a sought-after sideman and educator originally from San José, Costa Rica. He has shared the stage with Gary Campbell, Ira Sullivan, Bill Mays, Silvano Monasterios, Tomasz Dabrowski, Stephen Scott, Troy Roberts, Roxana Amed, Martin Bejerano, Camila Meza, John Hart, Michael Dease, Rotem Sivan, Melissa Aldana, Andy Laverne, Othello Molineaux, Randy Brecker, Lew Tabackin, Don Friedman, Jonathan Kreisberg, Benny Golson, and Slide Hampton, to name a few.
As an educator, Zuñiga has a wealth of experience, holding previous positions at Florida International University, Broward College and Miami Dade College teaching Jazz, Music Production and Music Business. He has performed and presented at the Jazz Education Network convention and has been a Thelonious Monk Institute Clinician. He has taught masterclasses at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Denmark, The American Modern School of Music in Paris, The Universidad de las Americas in Ecuador, The New World School of the Arts in Miami, The University of Costa Rica, and the Symphonic Conservatory in San José.
As a sideman, Zuñiga has toured the world with highly creative jazz projects performing in festivals like The Copenhagen Jazz Festival, The Cully Switzerland Jazz Festival, Jazz Fest Málaga, The Ecuador Jazz Festival, Jazz Sur Le Ville Marseille, The Guatemala Jazz Festival, Ground Up Music Festival, The Jacksonville Jazz Festival, and The St. Petersburg Jazz Festival.
Zuñiga approaches teaching and performing with an open mind and a hunger to maintain a constant expansion of knowledge in areas such as the intersection of jazz and world music, music technology and nurturing diversity in jazz education. He is a proud Zildjian Cymbals and Vic Firth Sticks endorser.
