You will be surprised how easy it to learn to use studio flash units, flash meters and backgrounds! You will photograph live models in the Rankin Arts Photography Center’s spacious studio and after you complete the course successfully, you will be eligible to rent the studio on your own to photograph your family and friends. Required class: Digital Photography I

Our instructor has traveled to Iraq, Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates, Mexico and other places on assignment, and his gear has traveled with him. If you find yourself asking, “ What camera, lenses or accessories do I need?”, you need this fun, informative class by one of our most popular instructors.

If you want to go beyond casual picture taking and seriously pursue the art of photography, this class is for you. The instructor’s photographs have been widely exhibited and are included in several museum collections. In this four-week class, participate in discussions and complete assignments in four important areas: light, subject, perspective and presentation. Each participant will receive a museum quality pigment ink enlargement of their best image, printed by the instructor. Required classes: Digital Photography I and II or comparable experience.

Shoot! Edit! Print! Instructor: Kenny Gray

Spend a Saturday with the instructor, shooting in various uptown locations. Then return to the classroom, where your images will be reviewed and gently critiqued. You will have one of your images chosen to be edited by the instructor, with your and your classmates’ input. Expect lots of discussion about the choices considered and made to achieve the final image. Finally, your image will be printed on a professional wide-format Epson printer and you will leave with your image, printed and matted with museum-quality materials. The instructor’s work is included in several museum collections. This class is open to motivated photographers of any skill level. Wear comfortable shoes, and please bring a clean memory card to use.

In this lively, hands-on workshop, students will learn multi-light techniques working with live models. This follow-up to Studio Photography I features professional tips and techniques. Required class: Studio Photography I. One hour break for lunch. Oct 28

Understanding Light Instructor: Donald Tipton

All photographers must understand light—the success of their photographs, artistically and professionally, depends on it. In this class, you will learn the four qualities of light, how great photographers use those qualities, and how you can use them to transform your own work. Portraits in Uptown Instructor: Kenny Gray

In this fun, hands-on class, you will learn a classic, low-cost, low-tech approach to creating beautiful portraits with any camera, virtually anywhere. Photographers of all skill levels will enjoy this fun class, which features a short classroom session followed by an Uptown Columbus photo shoot. You will learn to find beautiful light in a variety of locations. Bring your camera, fresh batteries, a clean memory card and wear comfortable clothing. Macro Photography: The Close-Up

This Saturday class features a live macro photo shoot with the instructor, after which your work will be reviewed in the classroom. You will learn different applications for macro photography as well as how to choose the best equipment and accessories. Required class: Digital Photography I. One hour break for lunch.

There comes a time in your development as a photographer when all of your images seem pretty good, but you need the guidance of a more experienced photographer to take your work to the next level. Bring your images and have them critiqued by a PPA Judge and Master Photographer. You will gain insights into exposure, composition, lighting, posing and emotional impact as the instructor critiques your work and that of your classmates. Required class: Digital Photography I. One-hour break for lunch.
