S eason P r ev i e w The Cleveland State softball program has high hopes in 2013. “The girls are working extremely hard, they’re very focused,” head coach Angie Nicholson said. “We’re a young team but we are very excited and can’t wait to get going.” TEAM EFFORT ON THE MOUND With only one pitcher (Sara Shields), returning to the Vikings that picked up a win last season, CSU will be looking for a balanced team effort on the mound in 2013. Nicholson mentioned four players who she expects to be factors for CSU in the pitching spot in Sara Shields and Alex Radjen as returners, and Briana Combs and Susan Knight as freshman. “The two freshman have shown a lot of promise,” Nicholson said on Combs and Knight. “But all four of them are different in many ways, and I think they’re going to compliment each other very well.” Shields picked up a team leading 13 wins last season for CSU on the mound (and was also one of the Vikings’ best offensive players),while Radjen hasn’t thrown a high inning total in the green and white, Nicholson also noted how well she has performed in the early going Combs and Knight both come to Cleveland State following stellar high school careers in the states of Michigan and Ohio respectively. Combs, a two time Gatorade `Player of the Year’ in the state of Michigan was a member of four district champion teams, and a state champion her senior season in high school. The Second Team All-American as a senior and four time All-State selection ended her career with a 146-9 record, 1,400 strikeouts, and a 0.21 ERA. She also has the potential to see time in the infield for CSU and had a .448 batting average over her fouryear career high school career. Knight also is heading to CSU following an impressive high school career. The freshman from Milan, Ohio was First Team All-State and AllDistrict as a sophomore and senior, as well as a three-time First Team All-Conference selection. BEHIND THE PLATE The catcher position is looking to be one of the least experienced on the CSU roster this upcoming season, but in no way does that mean the position doesn’t have talent. Redshirt Freshman Erica McNew will be leading the way at this position for the Vikings this season. After starting the first seven games of the year last year in the green and white (batting .136), she went down to a torn ACL and is ready to bounce back in 2013. “When an injury occurs it makes you respect the game a little more and how quickly it can be taken away from you,” Nicholson said. Adding she believes any injury can make you come back stronger, which is exactly what she’s expecting from McNew. Freshman Lauren Look is also looking to compete for time behind the plate this upcoming year. Look was a four time all-district and three time all-region selection at Pinconning H.S. She was also named All-State as a sophomore and set the school single season home run record that same season. AROUND THE INFIELD When describing her 2013 infield Nicholson used two words, and those two words clearly show the expectations she has for the group. “Very strong.” Dara Toman, a 2012 Horizon League First Team All-League selection, and Nena Doran, a 2012 All-Newcomer Horizon League selection will be returning in 2013 to lead a group with high expectations. Toman led the CSU last season in batting average (.405), home runs (19), runs batted in (42), slugging percentage (.892), and on-base percentage (.553) and will be looking to do the same this season. “Dara has just gotten stronger and stronger very year,” Nicholson said. “I really think she’s going to continue to do well and go out with a bang as a senior.” Doran was also very impressive in her freshman campaign. After starting the season at third base she moved to shortstop following an injury to Cynthia Woodard and was just as effective. Her 94 assists were

2

the seventh most of all players in the Horizon League during the regular season, also hitting .229 (41-179) while tying for third on the team with four home runs. Filling out the infield at shortstop and second base is expected to be Cynthia Woodard at shortstop and Janessa Rivera-Keahi at second. Woodard, who started the first 25 games of last season for CSU, will be looking to bounce back from a season-ending injury, while RiveraKeahi, a transfer from Monterey Peninsula College is ready to make her mark in the Horizon League for the first time. Rivera-Keahi picked up All-American honors last season at Monterey Peninsula College, ending the year with a .451 average. “With Woodard and Janessa up the middle I think that’s the finest middle infield you’re going to see,” Nicholson said, clearly excited about what this group can become. Nicholson also mentioned Susan Knight could see some time at third for Doran when she isn’t on the mound. TALENT IN THE OUTFIELD High expectations aren’t only in the infield this season, as the outfield for the Vikings is just as ready to go. “This is the fastest outfield I think I’ve ever seen,” Nicholson said. “We’re going to be able to play around with some things (with all the talent the group has) and see what works best for us.” Senior Caila Ferro is expecting to lead the way this season for the Vikings in the outfield. After hitting .266 in 52 games last season she unfortunately went down with an injury, but similar to McNew, Woodard, and others, she is ready to go. “I look to her, she’s a huge leader, she’s one of our hardest workers,” said Nicholson. Who is very excited about having the girl they call “Crash” back in the outfield. While Nicholson is expecting big things in Ferro coming back, she also has high feelings on the rest of a young outfield group. Alisha Silva is one player who came right to Nicholson’s mind as someone who could step in and play right away as a freshman. “Alisha is going to start, whether it’s second base, right field, or center,” she said. “When you have a freshman coming in to play center that says a lot right there.”’ Alyson Broschk, a high school teammate of Silva’s, is another freshman that could come in and start for the Vikings this season. Silva and Broschk teamed up as a dominating duo at Keystone High School in Ohio. As seniors last season they led their team to a perfect 22-0 record and Ohio state championship. Silva was a three-time All-Conference selection, two-time All-District selection, and two-time All-Country selection, while Broschk joined Silva on the All-County team as a senior. Other players who could contribute and see time in the outfield include Katelind Phillips and Darien Ward as freshman, and Nena Doran (when she is not in the infield), Afton Allred, and Hannah Yoe as returning players. Phillips comes to CSU after helping her Monroe Central H.S. team win both a regional title as a sophomore and sectional title as a senior. She was a four-time All-Conference selection and also brings speed, setting her high school `s stolen base record as a junior with 32. Ward, high school infielder from Elyria, Ohio, will be moving to the outfield for the Vikings this season. She was a four time All-Conference selection, and finished her senior season with a .492 batting average, a school record. “She’s the fastest kid we’ve got on the team as far as speed is concerned so we’re looking for a lot from her,” said Nicholson of Ward. Doran, who was already mentioned by Nicholson as a potential impact player in the infield, looks like she could be just as effective in the outfield as well. “The thing about Nena we have seen is she should probably be in the outfield, she reads balls and gets to balls so fast, it’s amazing,” Nicholson said. “But she’s also a great infielder.” Allred, a senior, and Yoe, a redshirt sophomore, will be both be looking to bring experience to the Vikings, with potential to see time in the outfield or infield. Allred played in 41 games last season for CSU, batting .200 with five RBI’s and one home run, while Yoe hit .183 for the Vikings last season, including two doubles and a home run.

Angie Nicholson H e a d C o ac h // S e v e n t h S e a s o n It hasn’t taken Angie Nicholson long to accomplish her goal of making Cleveland State one of the top programs in the Horizon League. With 189 wins, a pair of regular season league titles, one tournament title and NCAA appearance in her first six seasons, she has quickly built the Vikings into an elite program. A two-time Horizon League Coach of the Year selection, Nicholson has guided the Vikings to 29 or more wins in five of her first six seasons, including a school-record 44 wins in 2010. She has more than double the three 30-win campaigns that CSU had in the 28 seasons before she took over the program. And she is looking for even better things in the future. The 2000 Cleveland State graduate took over as head coach in the fall of 2006 and the success quickly followed. During just her first season at CSU (2007), she led the Vikings to a second place regular season finish in the Horizon League after posting a 33-14 record and was one inning away from winning the Horizon League Championship, earning a second place finish. Four Vikings earned All-Horizon League honors and two received academic league accolades under Nicholson in her first season as head coach and her 33 wins are the fourth-highest total in program history.

In 2008, she earned her first Coach of the Year award after the Vikings went 31-18 and won a regular season Horizon League title. Four CSU players earned all-conference honors and two were named to the all-newcomer team. The 2009 season saw the Vikings go 35-18 overall, finishing second in the league in the regular season and capping the year by winning the first Horizon League title in school history. That win clinched CSU’s second berth in the NCAA tournament and first since 1997. Six players were named to the all-league team, including the Horizon League Pitcher of the Year for the second season in a row. The 35 wins allowed Nicholson to became the first head coach in program history to lead the Vikings to three consecutive 30-win seasons. Nicholson did those records one better in 2010 as the Vikings set a Horizon League record by going 22-2 in league play and set a school record with 44 victories. The Vikings swept the league awards with Tthe Player of the Year, the Newcomer of the Year and Pitcher of the Year all coming from Cleveland State in addition to Nicholson being chosen as the Coach of the Year. In 2011, Cleveland State won 29 games and had two all-league performers, including the league Player of the Year. Four different Vikings were named to the academic all-league team. Last season, the Vikings finished the year 17-39, and 9-15 in the Horizon League. Cleveland State had three players recognized as all-league performers in 2012. Junior Dara Toman led the way with a First Team AllLeague selection. While sophomore Sara Shields was named both Second Team All-League and All-Newcomer team selection, and freshman Nena Doran joined Shields on the All-Newcomer team.

Nicholson begins her seventh season at CSU with a 189-125 record and a eight-year overall record of 232-172-1 that does not include a 94-64 mark in four years at the junior college level. She rose quickly through the collegiate ranks, coaching seven seasons at four different institutions, including as the head coach at Horizon League member Butler in 2006. Her record of turning programs around is well documented as she has guided Cuyahoga Community College and Ursuline to impressive reversals of fortune. The rapid changes have been due in part to the fact that her players have embraced her free-wheeling, pressure style offense, while flourishing in an easy-going (but hard-working) atmosphere.

A native of Elyria, Ohio, Nicholson lettered four times in softball at CSU, earning All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference honors as both a junior and senior in 1999 and 2000. Used primarily at third base during her career, she battled a pair of knee surgeries to rank sixth in Viking history by playing 191 games, starting 187 times. A four-time recipient of an Athletic Academic Excellence Award during her career, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 2000. Nicholson, who played at CSU as Angie McCall, is married to former Viking wrestler Richard Nicholson and the couple have four children, daughters Taylor (10), Mackenzie (8) and Payton (6), and son Darian (3). The family resides in Berea, Ohio.

S t e p h a n i e T ay l o r A s s i s ta n t C o ac h // S i x t h S e a s o n Stephanie Taylor, a 2003 Cleveland State graduate, returns to CSU for her sixth season as an assistant coach for former teammate Angie Nicholson. Taylor will primarily work with hitters and catchers while also assisting with recruiting. During her first five seasons on the Viking coaching staff, Taylor has helped lead CSU to 156 victories, including a 44-win campaign in 2010. She has also guided the Vikings to three trips to the Horizon League Championship title game, with the first league crown in program history coming in 2009. Prior to CSU, Taylor served as a graduate assistant at Central Michigan University during the 2003-04 season, where she helped the Chippewas to a 32-19 record, the regular season Mid-American Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA Regional. A two-time second team all-conference selection, Taylor was also a four-year letterwinner, earning the 2003 Varsity “C” Club award winner as the Most Outstanding Player on the team. Taylor was also recognized for her scholastic achievements, receiving the Faculty Athletic Representative’s Special Academic Achievement Award in 2003 while also being named to the Verizon Academic All-District squad. A .344 hitter with 18 RBI as a sophomore (52-151), Taylor hits .283 as a junior (34-120), scoring 10 runs and driving home 19. She closed her career in grand fashion, winning the Horizon League batting title by going 52-for-157 (.331) with a team-high 24 RBI and 19 walks as a senior. Taylor graduated as CSU’s career leader in doubles (37), third in batting average (.319), and fourth in hits (163). She completed her coursework for a master’s degree in sport management from Cleveland State in May, 2008.

Cour tney Pruner A s s i s ta n t C o ac h // S e c o n d S e a s o n Former Ohio State standout Courtney Pruner, a two-time All-Big Ten selection, was named an assistant softball coach at Cleveland State on Sept. 1, 2011. Pruner’s main responsibilities include handling the CSU pitching staff while assisting with recruiting. “We’re very excited to add Courtney to our staff,” head coach Angie Nicholson said. “She will serve as our pitching coach, but is able to help us with many facets of our program. Courtney will help with pitching, but she can also instruct our players in hitting, defense and base running. We’re very fortunate to get someone that brings so much to the table.” Pruner spent the 2010 season coaching at her alma mater, Akron’s Ellet High School, where she was an all-city selection all four seasons. She was a three-time all-state performer and was named the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year in 2005. When she graduated, she held the Ohio High School Athletic Association record for home runs in a career. A Sport and Leisure Studies major at Ohio State, Pruner fought injuries to start 148 consecutive games to conclude her career and produced whenever she was on the field. In both 2007 and 2010 she earned first team All-Big Ten honors and finished in the top 10 in a handful of offensive categories, including second with 38 career homers. Additionally, the two-time Buckeye captain earned six career victories in the circle and recorded 50 strikeouts in 53 innings.

6

In addition to her duties with Cleveland State, Pruner coaches the Ohio Power softball team.
