Head Coach Mark Wick Coach Wick’s leadership qualities were evident during a brief stint at Augsburg College where he was the assistant in the 1988-89 season then served as a co-head coach and head coach from 1990-96. He helped lead the Auggies to MIAC prominence during that time, recording a 36-34-3 overall record.

Mark Wick Head Coach 11th Season

Mark Wick begins his 11th season behind the bench for the Saints in 2014-15. Wick, who is the program’s winningest coach with 135 wins in 10 seasons, is a two-time NCHA Coach of the Year being named in 2008-09 and then again in 2011-12. The Saints finished second in the league in 2011-12 for the second time in the past three seasons. The Saints have advanced past the NCHA quarterfinals seven of the last eight seasons and made the finals for the second time in program history in 2014. In 2009, Wick guided CSS to its second NCAA Tournament appearance and first since the 1982 season.

Following his time at Augsburg, Wick became an assistant coach at UW-Superior from 19962000. While at Superior he helped lead the Yellowjackets to three NCAA Frozen Four appearances (1997, 1999, 2000) and two NCHA playoff championships (1997, 2000). He is married to Linda and has three children Anders, Carly, and Jonathon.

During the 2008-09 season, the Saints peaked at the No. 2 spot in the weekly U.S. College Hockey Online Division-III poll, holding the spot for three straight weeks starting January 19th. In 200910, the Saints were ranked in the top 10 of the USCHO poll for 15 straight weeks, peaking at No. 4. The Saints were back in the polls last season in the top 15 for five straight weeks, beginning on January 23rd. Wick was hired just two days before the first practice of the 2004-05 season, but still earned honorable results in the first year. Since then, Wick has brought the program back to a former glory of national recognition last seen in the 1970s. Wick turned the program around quickly in 200506 as the Saints had their first winning season in twenty years. The record caught more than a few people by surprise, but not many within the Saints hockey community because Wick has had success in every stop throughout his career. A Hermantown native, the 1985 graduate of St. Scholastica transferred from Gustavus Adolphus College prior to his junior year. He was the team’s second leading scorer his senior year with 41 points and was a scholar-athlete both years at Scholastica. After graduating, he earned a Master of Education degree from Bowling Green State University in 1989. www.facebook.com/css.saints

Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Significant changes to the membership and leadership of both the Men’s and Women’s Northern Collegiate Hockey Association took place in 2013. The Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association, which added the St. Norbert and St. Scholastica men’s programs, moved forward as the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. The landscape of the Men’s Conference was drastically changed when the University of Wisconsin state school members departed at the end of the 2012-13 season. Along with the changes in membership, the NCHA Men’s and Women’s leagues utilize common executive leadership while having separate administrative structure, constitutions and bylaws. Dr. G. Steven Larson serves as Commissioner of both conferences, having previously served as Commissioner of the MCHA. Jim Olson, who served as the Director of Officials for the MCHA, will serves in the same role for both the NCHA Men’s and Women’s Conferences. Chris Zills and Brian Monahan, who previously worked behind the scenes for the MCHA and NCHA to publicize their respective leagues, moved into similar, but different roles moving forward for the NCHA. Monahan serves in the role of Director of Public Relations, taking an active role in promoting, social media, blogging and other “faces” of the media. Zills is the Director of Sports Information, maintaining the behindthe-scenes aspect of the communications department. “Moving the eight current MCHA men’s programs forward as the NCHA brings together our men and women under one umbrella,” Adrian president & chair of the MCHA/NCHA president’s council Jeff Docking said. “We can now work on promoting growth on both fronts, while keeping 30-plus years of combined championship tradition alive.” Speaking of championships, the regular season winner in both conferences now receive a trophy named after a significant leader in the growth of hockey. The Peters Cup - formerly given to the Men’s NCHA playoff champion - will now be given to the regular season champ. The Men’s playoff champ will win the Harris Cup, named after MSOE Director of Athletics Dan Harris, who served as the first president of the MCHA and helped get the league up and running. “I am really excited about the coming together of the two leagues and about both the synergy and energy that will result from having our men and women compete under the same name,” Slaats said. “I am also honored and humbled to have the new league playoff championship bear my name. It’s hard to believe how quickly, and how much, women’s hockey has grown since the initial formation of a women’s division in the spring of 2000. I honestly could not be happier or more proud of the outcome.” “Those of us at Concordia University are very excited to be a part of the new direction and strategic vision for our hockey conference,” MCHA DASC Chair Rob Barnhill said. “The level of competition in our new conference will be rigorous and the student-athlete experience will be greatly enhanced by participating with student-athletes from likeminded and like-missioned institutions.” The original Northern Collegiate Hockey Association dates back to 1980 and includes a lengthy history that consists of 12 NCAA National Championships won by six different members. Herb Brooks coached in the NCHA and Joel Otto played at Bemidji State before going on to win a Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames. The MCHA dates back to the 1998-99 season and has taken great strides in the past 15 years to rise to the level that is has achieved. The online home of both the NCHA Men’s and Women’s Conferences will be www.nchahockey.org.

Program History: All-Time Roster 2014 Induction Class Del Genereau – Men’s Hockey Coach/Athletic Director – 1972-1977

Genereau was hired by fellow St. Scholastica Athletics Hall of Famer President Father Francis X. Shea to lead the institution’s first varsity athletics program, Men’s Hockey. Genereau, a former Duluth Cathedral High School Coach who was retired prior to taking the St. Scholastica gig, quickly built up the men’s hockey program into prominence. He guided the Saints to the 1975 NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championships and a 1976 runner-up finish. He was 7236-3 in four seasons as head coach. Genereau continued as Athletic Director through the 1977 school year. Genereau was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003. Genereau passed away in 1988.

Randy Norgard – Men’s Hockey – 1973-77

Norgard was part of two NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championship squads in his time at CSS. A defenseman from Duluth Central High School, Norgard was named a NAIA All-American in 1977 and a three-time All-Tournament team selection. The three-time All-Conference choice was named the team’s MVP for the program’s second championship run in 1976-77 and was also a two-year captain.

Jeanne Fleck – Women’s Cross Country – 1994-96

Fleck was the first CSS runner to individually qualify for a national meet multiple times as she competed in three NAIA National Championship events. Fleck first competed on the CSS cross country team as a 29-year-old sophomore. She was the team’s Most Valuable Runner all three seasons and became the first to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Individual Title in 1996. Fleck was a recipient of the 1996-97 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.

Jen Quale – Women’s Basketball – 1996-2000

Quale was a two-time NAIA First Team All-Region selection in 1997 and 1998. She currently ranks second all-time in the St. Scholastica Women’s Basketball program with 1,574 career points. She led the team in scoring in three different seasons and was a member of back-to-back UMAC Championship squads. Quale has the most field goals made in a career in program history (624) and also ranks in the top 10 in career rebounds (497), free throws made (196) and steals (190). She was a four-time All-UMAC selection and was also named a NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2000. Quale was the recipient of the 1997-98 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.

Chris Lorentz – Softball – 1997-2001

Lorentz holds numerous program records for the CSS Softball team. She is the only player in program history to record at least 100 hits, runs scored, RBIs and stolen bases in a career. The two-time NAIA All-Region selection holds program records for games played in a career (183), runs scored in a career (175) and season (50), triples in a career (18) and stolen bases in a season (32) and career (109). The 109 stolen bases is tied for the Minnesota Collegiate record. She ranks second all-time in career hits (209) and is a four-time All-UMAC selection. She is a member of CSS Softball’s 25th Anniversary Team and was a NFCA Scholar-Athlete in 2001. She was also a two-time NAIA ScholarAthlete nominee. Lorentz also played soccer at CSS where she was named all-conference in 1998.

Neil Runbeck – Men’s Soccer – 1998-2002

Runbeck was the men’s soccer program’s career leader in points for over a decade until it was broke last fall by Joe Watt. Runbeck’s 157-point total is currently second overall. He led the team in scoring all four seasons. He holds the record for most shots in a game (14) and is tied for most assists in a game (4). His 20 goals and 15 assists during the 2001 season both rank in the top five. Runbeck was named NAIA First Team All-Region, Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, UMAC Player of the Year and Team MVP that season. Career goals was another record that Runbeck had to relinquish last fall to Andrew Jenkins. Runbeck has the second-most career goals (57) and assists (43) in program history. Runbeck was a four-time all-conference selection, including a two-time first team choice. Runbeck also played four years as defenseman on the men’s hockey team and was named to the NCHA All-Academic Team in 2002.
