The introduction of the postal codes (Zip codes) During the year 1975 the Soviet postal administration started the introduction of postal codes. All postcodes have six numerals. The code for the Uzhorod is 294000, whilst all the other post offices in the “Zarkapatska Oblast” have codes starting with 295.The introduction of these postcodes was also the reason for providing gradually new date stamps to the post offices. Two types were recorded, type “D” with a diameter of 25 mm and type “E” having a diameter of 29 to 30 mm. Type D exists in a mono-lingual and a bi-lingual version and of type E two bi-lingual versions exist. Over the years new post offices have been opened and below is a list of post offices with their postal code as existed in the year 1988. In case the Russian and Ukrainian spelling is identical the name in Cyrillic is only given once.
type D 1 Mono-lingual date stamp of Svaliava СВАЛЯВА
type D 2 type E 1 type E 2 Bi-lingual date stamp of Guklivy Bi lingual in two concentric Bi-lingual of Sokirnitsa ГУКЛВЫЙ – ГУКЛВИЙ circles СОКИРНИЦА - СОКИРНИЦЯ all have CCCP in the upper segment
The postal code is not on the new date stamps but they are a great help in determining the name of the source village or town where the mail has been posted. During Soviet times it was very common to use envelopes with imprinted stamps. On these envelopes a special provision was made where the sender could write his address with postal code. This also applied to the postcards. The 4 th numeral of the code is allocated to a district, but apparently the districts borders during Soviet times changed several times. You may find the list below helpful, but the district borders indicated on the map on page 207 do not entirely correspond with the ones at the time the postal codes were introduced. 2951 is for district Uzhgorod 2952 is for district Irchava 2953 is for district Svaliava 2954 is for district Mukatchevo 2955 is for district Vinogradov 2956 is for district Beregovo 2957 is for both district Tiachev 2958 is for district Rachov 2950 is for district Peretchin
