here is a colour explosion all across the fashion circuit. A myriad of bright hues are making headway into women’s wardrobes the world over, not only in clothes but also on their shoes. The trend is wilder than usual. Coloured heels add dimension and a cheerful smile to any outfit. They also instantly take any look a notch higher, dressing-up even the most basic garment. Watch out for colours like fuchsia, yellow, cobalt, neon green and orange, the current rage. Playing with colours can be a tricky game. An interesting and quick way to do it is through colour-blocked shoes, in combinations of orange and pink, blue and purple or red and purple. At the American footwear brand, Aldo, the Spring/Summer 2012 collection is an assortment of colour-blocked and single colour bright neon wedges and block heels. Vibrant stilettos add a pop to the new collection of Charles & Keith, while statement-heels is what Zara’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection is all about. Strappy footwear in lively colours add a bit of summer glam needed to step out in style. Steve Madden, the brand that entered the country in 2011 with its range of quirky and funky red-carpet shoes, continues to grab attention this year with twotoned chunky heels and wedges, predominantly in suede. Their striking Kennya wedges are inspired by the lovely colours worn by the Kenyan women. Woods by Woodland has beautiful wedges in delicious shades like orange and yellow. Learn the ropes of colour-blocking from the American television actress Jamie Chung, who was spotted at an after party of the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards, sporting a pair of Popsicle peep toe pumps. She paired them perfectly with an easy to carry nude dress and red lips.

• Match your handbag, belt or neckpiece with the colour of your shoe. Stick to matching just two items to ensure that you don’t look over-the-top. • Team a pair of coloured heels with a basic looks like jeans and a white tee, or a neutral dress. This is the simplest rule of the colour matching handbook.

• Wear a top in the colour of your shoes, or match one colour from your top with your shoes. • Experiment with shoes in colours that may not match with your skin-tone. For example, green tops and dresses may make you look dusky, but green shoes will give you a bold look. • If you’re not confident of colourblocking with your clothes, use the trend on your shoes.
