Are you wary of vivid blues, luscious reds or pale pinks? We speak to three professionals for a lowdown on how to perfectly pick products suitable for different skin tones

air, very fair and dusky may be just shades away from each other, but when it comes to make-up and colours that work with these skin tones, there is a world of difference. Depending on where you are on the shade card, browns, pinks or oranges may be perfect on your skin.

For those leaning towards duskiness, what is known as “wheatish” in matrimonial descriptions, Gulati recommends peaches, beiges and browns to enhance colouring. Sarin also sticks to beiges and browns, but recommends adding certain shades from the pink family. “Neutral shades of beige and brown work well on the lips, but on the cheeks certain deeper matte shades of pink and apricot tones can also work well,” she says. In search of a pink? Get hold of Maybelline’s Pink Petal in its Colour Sensational collection. To add drama, go with smoky eye colours such as brown, black and navy blue. Glamour can be added, she says, by, “Warm metallic shades in the gold and bronze family on the eyes and cheeks.” Inglot offers a great collection to get the smoky eyes effect. There are even tutorials online on getting this look with Inglot eye make-up. Applying a good primer before the foundation works wonders on this skin, making it look very fresh.
For those with truly dusky or dark skin tones, not shying away from colours such as deep burgundy, orange and gold is important. Dusky girls often feel like they should only use bland colours, but jewel tones can really work for them. Kapoor says: “Dark skins could use warmer tones like mango, gold and bronzes to make them look vibrant.” Maybelline’s Vivid & Smooth collection of eyeliners has a gold option that will make your eyes dazzle. If you’re feeling experimental enough to try jewel tones, other options available in the same collection include Olive, Violet Pearl, Ocean Blue and Forest Green. There is consensus from the professionals on this point. Sarin adds: “Dark skinned beauties should keep deep reds, burgundies and very clear shiny metallic glosses close for their lips.” For those glamorous times, she recommends dark kohl-rimmed eyes set off with a hint of smokiness in shades of deep blacks and deep metallic greens. To complete the look, she says: “For the cheeks, deep apricot and matt beiges work well. Any metallic lotion or cream with gold and bronze tones will work.”

should also try dark smoky eyes, or dark lips for fashion-forward looks.” Sarin recommends experimenting with a cool colour palette, which includes colours such as blue, violet, shades of green and silver tones of glitter for creating dramatic eyes. “Fresh coral glossy lips, which are very trendy this season, will work very well for them,” she says.
