AROH
has completed yet another year of the tough journey which started about a decade back. Many lives touched, and many hands empowered! There have been periods of satisfaction, of having made a difference to some lives, The more we ‘reachout’, the more we feel concerned and urged to bridge the huge gap between the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’. It is a saddening fact that one fourth of India’s population earns less than the government-specified poverty threshold of 12 rupees per day! Official figures estimate that 27.5 per cent of Indians lived below the national poverty line in 2004-2005. A 2007 report by the state-run National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector (NCEUS) found that 77 per cent of Indians, (roughly 86 crore people), lived on less than 20 rupees per day. Livelihood Generation, thus became our focus during the year. Our partners, Smile Foundation, Dr. Reddy’s Foundation, Rotary Club and many individual supporters have made it possible for us to reach our to a larger number of needy young girls ad boys and provide them training for income generation. We were able to reach out to more than 600 beneficiaries in the current year through our livelihood programmes and provided job placement to about 60 per cent of them. India has the largest number of out-of-school children. The poor children of immigrant families, living in sub-human conditions are the worst sufferers despite Government’s efforts towards Education for All. It is only after many persuasive counselling sessions that parents agree to send their children to the non-formal education centres. We take up the exercise of mainstreaming them into formal schools after about one year of preparedness. It is a daunting task since these children and their families do not have the required documents for admissions and we have to procure the documents for them. When we work in our poor communities, it is heart-wrenching to see the children suffering and dying of malnutrition. IT is reported that the rate of malnutrition among children under the age of three was 46 per cent (in 2007), higher than any other country in the world. Through our nutrition and health programmes we try to help the children in our communities and Centres. Likewise, there are other interventions, as given in the Annual Report, which were taken up by us during the year for the holistic development of the beneficiaries and the communities. AROH Foundation AROH Foundation is a registered non-profit, non-governmental organization founded by like-minded professionals, to give back to the society. AROH team has the best minds from the academic pool, development sector and corporate management. AROH has, over past 8 years, developed sound sustainable programmes to cater to the development needs of its target community. AROH has been actively involved in several community welfare programmes also, in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan. Literacy and vocational skills training is the main thrust of these programmes. Various programmes on market driven vocational trades are conducted by AROH Foundation for the marginalized youth & women in the age group of 18-35 years drawn particularly from disadvantaged community from local areas for their livelihood options. The organization also runs multiple projects of economic empowerment along with SHGs and Micro finance activities and a well-organized network of Resource – Marketing and Placement Units as well as Education, Environment,Health & Sanitation projects.

Programme at AROH Foundation These are the specific initiatives that serve as the building blocks for overall community development programmes :
UDAAN is the flagship programme to impart Vocational, traditional and handicraft Skills to the disadvantaged groups. Life-skills training is an important component of the programme.
Sabke Liye Kaam provides gainful employment opportunities for the beneficiaries. Corporate tie ups are made for placement besides promoting self employment.
School Achha Hai is an endeavour to provide better schooling facilities for the less privileged.
Padho Aur Badho aims to bring out-of school youth into the fold of education by providing non-formal education and equivalency certificates.
Maa-Bachcha Dono Swasth realizes the importance of Maternal and Child Health and Works towards securing the same through its efforts.
Sabka Swasthya promotes better health for all in the community by providing health camps, hubs and mobile clinics.
Shilp Aur Shilpkaar is the project designed to revive and restore the dying arts and crafts and to rehabilitate the artisans.
Kuchh Naya Karein develops innovative means of livelihood by promoting indigenous talent and resources. Craft, agri-produce and non-farming activities form a component of this initiative.
Kuchh Alag Takneek devises innovative use of non-conventional energy to meet the shortage of fuel and electricity.
Saaf Aur Haraa Bharaa is the programme designed for cleanliness, hygiene, and sanitation and pollution control within the communities. It promotes tree plantations and nature walks amongst the children.
Milkar Chalein promotes formation self-helps for all activities to be taken up for community development. This is important to bring sustainability in the project.
Karavan tries to involve the civil society and create social responsibility for voluntary help for the welfare of the underprivileged. We motivate all sections of people, both in India and abroad for voluntary help for our projects.

Our Approach AROH has designed and adopted a two-pronged strategy to help communities to envisage their village/colony as a comfortable place to live , work and socialise and chart a couse for their immediate and remote future. We undertake research activities in the areas of concern to strengthen and consolidate the policy-level decisions for government schemes. Alongside,we get actively involved in action with the communities,to make a direct difference to quality of their lives. We work with a holistic, people-centric approach and besides providing livelihood opportunities, we plan and run programmes on education, health and hygiene , sanitationetc.under the overall goal of empowerment of community. Use of indigenous talent and resource is encouraged in all projects.

UDAAN Institute of Vocational Training (UIVT) AROH Foundation has been running an initiative called UDAAN. Project UDAAN is an intervention targeted specifically towards the underprivileged women and youth population through Vocational Training – that is giving them equal opportunities to pick up and learn a new skill, supplemented further by counselling and guidance services hereby nurturing and empowering them till they reach a level where they are not only self-sufficient, but they in turn make a valuable contribution to society. Aim here is to introduce the trade according to the needs assessment of the community on the basis of educational relatives, occupation, demand of the trade and identification of beneficiary. Those trades will be identified which are relevant for the economy of the area and will be helpful in creating jobs for individual or for group activities. Under the Project Vocational and Life Skills Training has been imparting in various locations depending upon the local industry requirements. There is a nodal UDAAN Centre to cater to the bigger urbanised industrial setups and smaller UDAAN kiosks at village-level. One nodal UDAAN Centre has been supporting, supervising and monitoring 10-15 UDAAN kiosks.

Establisment of AROH-LABS Community Centre for Livelihood and Life Skills at Noida Livelihoods advancement business school (LABS) is a program of Dr. Reddy’s foundation. LABS addresses the needs of youth who are constrained by low income levels, inadequate skills, irregular employment, absence of opportunities for training and development, indebtedness and little bargaining power at the economic / social level. LABS get associated with AROH Foundation under the project LABS in Delhi. AROH Foundation is supporting LABS program for its working areas in East Delhi. To enable them to gain a foothold in the competitive job markets, AROH-LABS given them livelihood and soft skills in environment of interactive learning and mentoring that develops their inherent capabilities. The AROH-LABS training courses are of 3-4 months duration, in which the aspirants are given technical inputs prepared in consultation with industry experts and professionals. Partnership with SMILE Foundation AROH Foundation has join hands with SMILE Foundation India’s Twin e-Learning Programme [STeP]. The programme aims at preparing urban underprivileged (adolescent youths) with skills in English Proficiency, Basic Computer Education and Soft Skills for enhancing their prospects of employment in fast expanding sectors like retail outlets, hospitality and BPOs sectors of India. The objective behind this programme is to create a pool of employable youth from the underprivilrged section through skill enhancement in tandem with market requirements. The curriculum of the course has been specially designed with industry inputs and their requirements. To bridge the skill divide among the target beneficiaries and industry requirement, the indigenously developed curriculum covers:

Establishment of UDAAN Nodal Centre at Sector VIII, Noida In the context of generating and promoting livelihood programmes for the marginalized, AROH Foundation envisages to implement vocational training programmes, which can provide equal opportunities to all, and have an access to a reasonable level of income for a satisfying and healthy life. As an initiative to mitigate the gigantic challenge of poverty and unemployment our country faces, AROH Foundation’s concern and objective is to improve quality life of the people by creating opportunities whereby they can acquire vitally needed market driven vocational skills that, in turn, help them to improve their economic needs. Padho Aur Badho Padho Aur Badho aims to bring out-of-school children & youth into the fold of education by providing non-formal education and equivalency certificates. As we all know that deprived children & illiterate youth are large in number requiring special focus for provision of various services. This category contains the entire cross section of children & youth living in slums, street children, working children, children of sex workers and children who are affected by any natural or man made catastrophe. In urban areas, like NCT Delhi the situation of such children & illiterate youth is often worse. Children & illiterate youth are either employed or working in inhuman conditions in garages, teashops and as domestic helps or supporting families to earn for sustenance. These children & illiterate youth face exploitative situations at the work place and are denied leisure at home and the opportunity to learn because of lack of basic amenities.

Non-Formal Education Centres in different Communities The formal education system does not reach out to these children & illiterate youth and there appears no mechanism to get these children & youth into the primary school net. Bringing these children & illiterate youth to school and ensuring that they complete primary education is the main objective of AROH Foundation. AROH Foundation has estalished several Non-Formal Education Centres in different communities such as Dallupura(East Delhi), Khoda (Ghaziabad) , Gharbrah(Greater Noida),Jhundpura(Sector-08, Noida) etc. The organization has able to successfully run these centres catering approximately 500 children. In next financial year we are targeting at least 30 Alternative & Adult Education Centres in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana will run successfully.
Republic Day Celebration with Children 26th January is one of the most important days in Indian history as it was on this day the constitution of India came into force and India became a truly sovereign state. In this day India became a totally republican unit. The country finally realized the dream of numerous freedom fighters who, fought for and sacrificed their lives for the Independence of their country. AROH Foundation has celebrated the day much enthusiasm with beneficiaries of Non-Formal Education programme at Noida office. To mark the importance of this occasion, 100 underprivileged children from our various centres participated in painting, poem, story telling and fancy dress competitions.

The programme was started with a National Anthem followed by solemn reminder of the sacrifice of the martyrs who died for the country in the freedom movement and the succeeding wars for the defense of sovereignty of their country. Our children participated in above-mentioned competition very enthustically and enjoyed very much. The winners were handed over prizes by the President of the foundation. Painting Competition The Children’s Painting competition was organized by AROH Foundation on the occasion of International Friendship day held on 3rd Aug. 2008 for enhancing creativity in urban/rural underprivileged and lower middle class children of East Delhi, Greater Noida and Noida. The objectives of programme being:
To promote educational, cultural, and social interest in the children from disadvantaged society.
To mobilize the marginalized community people through PLA (Participatory Learning and Action System)
To provide the platform to the underprivileged children to express their hidden talents and creative minds.
To encourage them by giving away prizes on their performance and certificates of articipation to all.
To create a platform for underprivileged and lower middle class children to share their knowledge, experience and become sensitive for each other.
Participation More than 100 children participated in the programme with great enthusiasm. 80 percent of the kids belonged to the poor and deprived sections. The meaning of friendship would not have been complete without the participation from the more privileged children. Hence about 20 percent children who participated belonged to normal families.

AROH tried to bring out the talent of underprivileged and lower middle class children. The participants for the competition were from the underprivileged communities where AROH Foundation runs its welfare activities i.e. the communities in East Delhi, Noida and Greater Noida. AROH had also approached different schools and organizations to have a wider outreach. Children from following schools and organisations participated along with some individual participants:

Participation in Annual Painting Competition at DPS, Noida AROH Foundation participated in an Annual Painting Competition which was held in DPS Noida on 23 January 2008 both for the privileged and underprivileged children by “The SETU Foundation� a Delhi based charitable organization. The students from various schools, NGOs of Noida participated in the competition. The purpose of the competition was to create awareness towards the education of the underprivileged so that they could also lead a life to build a great nation. The students drew painting to generate resources for the education of their underprivileged brethren. Seven bright students from our Non-Formal Education Centre of Dallupura were participated in the competition very enthusiastically. They got very good exposure and joy during this event. Mr.Ravi Kaul,Chairman, SETU Foundation, wished all the children a bright future and also said that this will be an annual event which SETU will continue to strive for the development of the under privileged so as to impact society.

Inauguration of Community Development Project at Community centre at Gharbhra village in Greater Noida One of the projects of AROH Foundation is Model Village Project under which AROH is carrying out its grassroots-level interventions for the upliftment of underprivileged community. AROH Foundation has adopted in 15 villages of Greater NOIDA in the District Gautam Buddh Nagar of the State of Uttar Pradesh. All these villages are essentially rural, surrounded by urban highrise buildings and posh localities. The population of the villages is between 2,000-5,000. The main occupation in the villages was agriculture which is now being replaced by other vocations as the land has been acquired by the government. Though located close to the urban facilities, the villages are still developing and face some major challenges:
Low literacy level, especially among girls and women.
Large number of out-of-school and unemployed youth.
Village is struggling to find another suitable occupation
Youth being demotivated and directionless
Education facilities for poor villagers are almost non-existent
There is problem of hygiene and sanitation
Villagers are mostly unaware about health issues and generally poor kids have poor health.
AROH Foundation is striving for holistic development of these villages. AROH Foundation has started community development programmes in Gharbhrah village with the kind support of village Pradhan in their house itself. Slowly and steadily our works spread in all over the village .Then AROH Foundation approached Greater Noida Authority to renovate the deserted community centre. With rigorous follow –up with the Authority and village Pradhan, we got community centre. On 11th Aug. 2008 we have inaugurated Community centre as a working place for our all 12 community based interventions.

Free Health Camp for disadvataged children in Gharbrah village of Greater Noida AROH Foundation has organized a Free Health Camp for disadvantaged children of Gharbhara Village, Greater Noida on 9th September 2008. This Programme was organized to:

About the programme The programme has been carried out with the children up to the age of 14 years. The doctors have done the check up of all the children and free medicines were distributed to the children and if there is any severe case then referrals were made to hospital. The card of all the children was made in the health camp the benefit of which is that the hospital will provide free health services to these children for three months. Around 250 registrations have been made in the health camp.

Free Child Health Camp at Dallupura in East Delhi AROH Foundation has organized a free health camp for disadvantaged children on occasion of children’s day, 14th Nov. 2008 at AROH Non-Formal Education Centre in Dullupura Village of East Delhi. Four member’s team, which comprises One Doctor & three Medical Assistants from Kailash Heart Institute (A unit of Kailash Hospital & Research Centre Ltd.) H-33, Sector-27, Noida have diagnosed the children. The age group of the children was 5-14 years. Free medicines have been distributed to diagnosed children. The referral card of all the children were made by the doctors in health camp so that hospital would provide free health services to these children for upto 3 months. Around 65 children were diagnosed. Few cases have been referred by doctors to Kailash hospital for further diagnosis. HSBC –Noida & Barakhamba Branch support the health camp by providing refreshments & medicines to the children. Most of the cases have been seen diagnosed as water borne diseases due to improper sanitation & lack of knowledge about health & hygiene.

Free Health Camp at Khoda of Ghaziabad AROH Foundation in collaboration with IBS, Noida has organized a free health camp for disadvantaged children of Khoda Village at AROH Non-Formal Education Centre on 8th February 2009. Four member’s team, which comprises One Doctor, One Marketing Manager & three Medical Assistants from Kailash Heart Institute (A unit of Kailash Hospital & Research Centre Ltd.) H-33, Sector27, Noida have diagnosed the children. The age group of the children was 5-14 years. Free medicines have been distributed to diagnosed children by IBS, Noida. The referral card of all the children were made by the doctors in health camp so that hospital would provide free health services to these children for upto 3 months. Around 85 children were diagnosed. IBS support the health camp by providing refreshments & medicines to the children. Six Volunteers, like Ms. Surabhi Agarwal, Mr. Akash Gupta etc. (2 from Final Year & Four from First Year) managed the children and distributed medicines and refreshments to beneficiaries.

Milkar Chalein Milkar Chalein promotes formation self-helps for all activities to be taken up for community development. This is important to bring sustainability in the project. Self-Help Group is a channel through which micro finance is routed to the poor in the belief that it will prove catalytic in helping them to pull out of poverty. SHG is a group formed by the community women, which has specific number of members like 15 or 20. In such a group the poorest women would come together for emergency, disaster, social reasons, economic support to each other have ease of conversation, social interaction and economic interactions. The poor women come together with the intention of saving and rotating loans amongst the members. Once these groups stabilize, they are accorded formal support from the banking system so as to widen their lending capacities. AROH Foundation has been forming SHGs with the motive of empowering the downtrodden, the marginalized and under-privileged section of the society who are left behind in the process of development initiated by various agencies/ departments. The target group primarily consists of the women, the small and marginal farmers, the grass-root level entrepreneurs, the slum dwellers, the dejected and distressed. Their formation being for the socio-economic development of these persons the primary concern is normally to make finance available to them in a commercially viable but not exploitive in nature, so that they could optimally utilize the available resources with them both human and natural.

AROH Foundation has formed 16 SHGs comprising of around 300 women. Under SHG women are mobilized and organized into Self Help Groups. The size of SHG varies from 10 to 20. Formation of groups, training of members, inculcation of saving habits, credit activities and income-generation programs are being taken up in a phased manner. Beside savings and loan activity these groups serve as a forum for the poor woman to: 1.

After a period of consistent savings say 06 months the SHGs start rotating their savings in the form of loans for micro enterprises and other activities including consumption .Only those SHGs that have performed well in rotating their internal savings are linked with bank credits. The groups are yet to be credit linked with bank. AROH is at present performing the role of facilitator for their linkages to the bank. AROH Foundation is already providing them technical assistance and support services such as identification of livelihood opportunities, technology upgradation and upgradation of their vocational skills. Based on market potentials and training in respective areas, members have started making articles like handmade paper products, Garment, Art & Crafts Products etc. which they market through the help of the organization. Members have also received training in Dress Designing, Art & Crafts, Hand made paper etc.

Amanda Boxtel with our less privileged children in village Gharbarah, Greater Noida Amanda Boxtel is an internationally recognized speaker who captivates her audiences with her stories, weaves in the valuable lessons she has learned along the way, and warms their hearts with laughter and compassion. She focuses her energy to present fresh material in a polished style. Amanda is the author of “Pivotal Moments – Life Lessons In Overcoming”. In her coaching practice, she applies the lessons from her experience in a structured and integrated process creating an environment of transformation for personal and professional growth. she visited Gharbarah in June 2008 and met the disabled children at the village sitting in dilapidated chairs or dragging themselves along the floor, she was moved and decided to connect herself with the project.It was a special moment, a special day for AROH when Amanda visited our village communities and was both inspiring and inspired. Herself physically challenged for the past 16 years, she is adventure personified and instils the same in others she gets to meet. She met our children, our challenged children, our women and others from the weaker sections of the society. She did make a difference….

AROH - Overseas Volunteers Programme 15 Volunteers from Sussex University, Brighton UK are came to AROH Foundation on 14th Aug. 2008 to do active interventions at the Gharbhra village in Greater Noida to produce measurable outcomes in the area. We had organized two orientation workshops,one at our head office F-52, sector 08, NOIDA on 17th August 2008 and another one at Gharbrah village of Greater Noida on 18th Aug. 2008.

Important points of project plan were:
The group had work in village Gharbarah
They were divided into five sub groups with a team of 3 volunteers in each sub group.
Each group had given a specific project plan for 4 weeks
Each group had carried out a pre-project appraisal on arrival and report a final outcome of their intervention.
Each subgroup had submit ed an independent final report.
The group had assisted by local volunteers, volunteer co-ordinator and guided by the volunteer manager.

Saaf Aur Haraa Bharaa Saaf Aur Haraa Bharaa is the programme designed for cleanliness, hygiene, sanitation and pollution control within the communities. It promotes tree plantations and nature walks amongst the children.
Plantation drive with disadvantaged children of Gharbrah village on the occasion of Teacher’s Day AROH Foundation has organized a Plantation Drive with disadvantaged children of Gharbhara Village,Greater Noida to celebrate the Teacher’s Day on 5th September 2008. This programme was organized to:
To promote educational, cultural, and social interests in the children from disadvantaged society.
To mobilize the marginalized community people through PLA system (Participator Learning & Action System)
To make aware about the environment and the natural resources among the children.
To make the children responsible for the preservation of the natural resources.
Participants of the programme The drive was participated by Resource persons of the village Gram pradhan and Mukhiya; 15 volunteers from Sussex University U.K; Teachers; members of AROH Foundation and around 200 school children.

About the programme This programme was to make the children aware about the conservation of natural resources and to make them feel responsible for these natural resources; to fulfill this objective in this plantation drive one plant to each of the children has been given and these plants were planted by the children themselves in their backyards. Then the instructions were given to them for taking care of the plants. The plants mainly involve the fruit bearing plants like Jamun, Lemon, Guava, Imli etc.

Shilp Aur Shilpkaar Shilp Aur Shilpkaar is the project designed to revive and restore the dying arts and crafts and to rehabilitate the artisans.
Artisan ID Card AROH Foundation has identify 100 artisans in and around East Delhi and submitted the profile to the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) , Ministry of Textile, Govt. of India for issuing them a photo identity card,in order to provide identity to handicrafts artisans.
Advantages
Provides an unique identity number to the artisans.
Facilitates in improving the penetration of the Governmental Scheme in remote artisanal areas.
Availability of information related to profile of artisan which facilitates customize planning foe execution of schemes.
Required for participation in different developmental programmes operated by Government of India,Ministry of Textiles, Office of the Development Commissioner(Handicrafts)
Required for participation in different marketing events in Dilli Haat, Gandhi Shilp Bazar etc.
Acts as identification documents for availing credit from Banks.
Facilitate identification of the artisans for different welfare schemes like Bima Yojana, Health Insurance etc.

Participation in the Conference organized by Centre for Social Responsibility & Leadership -Donors-Doers(The Art of Giving-2008) AROH Foundation has participated in the conference organized by Centre for Social Responsibility & Leadership held at India Habitat Centre-DonorsDoers(The Art of Giving-2008) during 25-26 July 2008.
The objective of the meet To share best practice of social sector, facilitate interaction between donors and doers, discuss causes for poor human development index of India, and overall what is ailing excellence in performance of corporate social responsibility and NGOs.
Participants of the programme The meet was participated by leading NGOs, PSUs, GAIL, NTPC, ONGC, CII etc. The NGOs participation was of three levels. First were those who participated in exhibition and gave presentation, second were those who participated in exhibition, and third were those who simply participated.
AROH Foundation in CSRL Conference AROH foundation participated in CSRL conference under first category. In the conference AROH foundation gave the Presentation on its ongoing activities, interventions and the future plans. AROH foundation exhibited its paper products made by the beneficiaries & the reports of research work done by AROH which were highly appreciated by the delegates of the conference.

CSRL organized a Quiz competition also which is in three phases:Ist- Screening for the Quiz Competition IInd- Semifinal Round IIIrd- Final Round AROH participated in the Quiz and won the second prize.
