Westmead Institute for Medical Research
INTRODUCTION The Westmead Millenium Institute officially opened on 9th October 2014. This $110 million state-of-the-art medical research centre located in Western Sydney brings together almost 400 clinicians, scientists, postgraduate students and support staff with the aim of acelerating research into Australia’s major health problems. This leading Australian medical research centre accommodates for research into a large number of public health concerns including; cancer, blindness, depression, diabetes, heart disease, her-pes, HIV, kidney disease, leukaemia, melanoma, multiple sclerosis, sleep apnoea, and emerging infectious diseases. BUILDING DESIGN The Westmead Millenium Institute designed by Bligh Voller Nield Architects is a nine-story complex comprising of 17,500 square metres of research laboratories, plus core high technology facilities used for disease gene discovery, cell sorting and imaging, and the development of new cellular and genetic therapies.
Providing an air movement solution for one of Australia’s largest state-of-the-art medical research centre
C/S INVOLVEMENT This building was set to achieve a minimum four star green star rating. The energy consumption of the building played a major role with its main focus on mechanical plant, lighting and equipment. C/S worked with the building engineers to provide a suitable louvre system that would assist in reducing the energy consumption of the building whilst maintaining a consistent exterior design. The use of the LSM and RS3105 througout meant that the building’s mechanical and electrical services maintained the required pressure drops whilst preventing the inflow of water.

We made our legendary Louvre performance disappear... Introducing C/S Perform Louvres New C/S Perform provides all the air movement, security and sight screening of our standard louvres, but with our exclusive perforated facade that gives it a fresh modern appearance. We even have a model that provides 100% rain defense. Facade Options The Perform custom perforated aluminium skin is engineered to work in harmony with the interior rain fins to provide uncompromised air and water performance.
So why settle for the same old look? Specify C/S Perform.

Free Area: 44.5% for a 1m x 1m unit Static Pressure Drop: 32 Pa @ 4.5 m/s*
Free Area: 46.8% for a 1m x 1m unit Static Pressure Drop: 40 Pa @ 4.5 m/s*
*Free area velocity Please call 1300 272 602 for additional material options.
Weather Considerations C/S Perform louvres are not designed for specification or use in areas where the louvres perforations may clog or become blocked. This includes areas where debris, snow, ice or other obstructions or occlusions may occur. C/S Perform louvres should be regularly inspected and maintained free of occlusion and blockage. To maximize performance and avoid property damage or personal injury, C/S Perform louvre’s must be cleared of occlusions and blockage as they occur, including blockages caused by accumulations of debris, snow, ice, or any other type or kind of obstruction.
Perform Sizes and Joints Perform comes in standard modules. The Butt joint option will provide a continuous look that can cover an entire facade. Our Reveal option provides a dramatic accent and blends well with any exterior wall system.
C/S Perform Tested C/S Perform Louvres are tested in accordance with AS4740:2000 test standards for air performance and water penetration. For complete data, call 1300 272 602.

Whatever louvre configuration your project calls for, we can prove it will do the job. C/S tests all of our standard louvres for airflow and rain resistance in our exclusive wind-driven rain test chamber. If you have a specific performance requirement and a standard C/S model will not meet your needs, C/S can create a custom
All of our standard louvres and configurations have been tested. If your project calls for something unique, we will provide testing to prove our louvres will perform.
Wind driven rain simulator directs vast quantities of water at the louvre. Up to 23mm of water per hour.
louvre for your project. We will then test your custom louvre in our chamber and prove that it performs as specified, giving you peace of mind.
The external wind generator can produce hurricane force winds up to 160 kph creating wind driven rains.
Tested in accordance with the Australian Standard AS/NZS 4740:2000.
Intake fan simulates building’s air handling equipment.
Collection chamber shows C/S Engineers the louvre effectiveness at stopping wind driven rain. Blade adjustments can be made quickly.
C/S Storm Resistant Louvres stop rain and prevent costly damage. Through experimentation with bending wind, C/S Engineers have designed horizontal and vertical louvre systems that allow air in buildings while keeping water out. Horizontal louvres are designed to “twist” the incoming air twice to maximise water removal. Up to 100% effective at stopping wind driven rain.

THE VICTORIAN DESALINATION PLANT The Victorian Desalination Plant has the largest green roof in the southern hemisphere and is capable of supplying up to 150 billion litres of high quality drinking water each year. It removes salts and minerals from seawater by passing it through reverse osmosis membranes.
C/S INVOLVEMENT C/S was delighted to be a part of creating a sustainable solution for the air supply of the Desalination Plant. Being on the coast, the plant required a louvre that would provide a high rain defence mechanism against coastal weather. The involvement of C/S early on meant that the specific performance properties could be met, providing a safe and clean environment for the plant.

Blast Resistant Louvres
• Seven models all capable of blast loads up to 83 kPa • Vertical and horizontal storm resistant models provide excellent protection from water infiltration • High performance drainable louvres offer high free area and low pressure drop • Two conventional models meet blast requirements at highly affordable prices
Storm Resistant Louvres
Choose Storm Resistant Louvres when: • Keeping up to 100% of rain out of your building is a priority • Wind driven rain is prevalent • Using a plenum is impractical because of cost or space considerations ations • Sensitive equipment will be housed close to the louvre system
* Please call 1300 272 602 for information.

Conventional Louvres
Choose Drainable Louvres when: • The periodic entry of water from non-wind driven rain is not a prime concern • Some drainage of cascading water is necessary • A variety of blade sizes, styles and frames are important
Thinline Louvres
Choose Thinline Louvres when: • Standard 100mm or 150mm deep louvres are not practical in applications such as storefronts, interior and exterior partitions and window walls • High free area and low pressure drop requirements are a priority: specify air conditioning louvres • Channel, flange or glazing frames are required
* Please call 1300 272 602 for information.
