First introduced 24 years ago to help both reduce unwanted lateral frame flex and improve acceleration, in no time, Triple Triangle™, gained global notoriety not only for its responsiveness, but also for its legendary durability. To date, a Triple Triangle frame remains the only frame in the world to win a world championship in both X/C and DH. LIFE IS COMPLICATED. SUSPENSION SHOULDN’T BE.

Most suspension platforms are forced to make a compromise between pedaling efficiency and suspension performance. And if compromises are anything…they’re complicated. Even if a system strikes an optimum balance (which a lot of them do), the additional linkages, shock-tunes and pivots required by such a design typically result in more maintenance, more moving parts…and more headaches. GT’s simple-is-best approach forced us to think about the problem differently.

Rather than forcing a compromise, GT’s Independent Drivetrain™ dissolves the relationship entirely, allowing the suspension to function independently of the drivetrain, and vice versa. The benefits? Because the drivetrain is independent of the suspension, pedaling forces aren’t interrupted by the activation of the suspension. Because the suspension is independent of the drivetrain, the suspension can focus on bumps and impacts without worrying about the effect on

Believe the ride. Not the hype. Carbon can usually yield a pretty durable, über-lightweight frame. Our motivations with the material, however, have always been slightly different. Unlike alloys, carbon allows us to put material exactly where it’s needed in order to create a better riding, more durable frame with the exact riding characteristics necessary to earn the trust of riders across the globe.

Our proprietary methodology for carbon frame fabrication, GT’s Force Optimized Construction (FOC) reflects our commitment to this ideal. Using our own Finite Element Analysis software, we can more closely examine the forces affecting a frame. Using this information, we can make frames that both ride the way we want,that working cyclists can trust.

More doesn’t equal better. Look at Vegas buffets. Making a bike stronger doesn’t always mean you’ve got to use more material. It does mean you’ve got to use stronger materials and be smarter in how you use them. Tube shapes, diameters and surface planes go a long way in making a stronger, more reliable frame.

1+1+1 = 4 A bike can be greater than the sum of its parts., we use a combination of materials, fabrication techniques, proprietary technology and geometries to give our bikes a specific “attitude.”

Rather than restricting ourselves to a fixed set of shapes, GT employs fabrication techniques that enable us to optimize the shapes of our tubes and frames according to the riding style (and resulting stresses) for which they’ll be used.


Hydroformed

monocoque

Hydroformed tubes undergo a process in which a traditionally shaped tube or part is manipulated and reshaped to direct metal towards places that need to be reinforced or strengthened. The result? An alloy tube that yields optimum strength-to-weight characteristics.

Because they’re not constrained by the shapes that an existing tube can yield, monocoque frames can take a shape that can withstand exceptionally trying terrain. making it a GT’s preferred fabrication process for the rigors of high-speed gravity riding.

butted Like hydroformed tubes, butted tubes are traditionally shaped, featuring a thicker, stronger wall at the ends of the tube (where the bike endures greater stress loads), and a thinner, lighter wall in the middle of the tube.

The cool thing about carbon? Its properties can be changed in targeted places. Need a carbon tube to be stronger around the headtube juncture? No problem, just change the orientation or weave of the carbon blend in that area. The downside of carbon? In order to capitalize on the advantages of carbon, you’ve really got to have one hell of a dialed-in fabrication process. Said more plainly — a carbon frame is only as good as the years of experience you’ve got in developing it. Fortunately, GT began experimenting with composites over 20 years ago. Our legacy of composite construction is manifested in our proprietary methodology of carbon fabrication — Force Optimized Construction. GT both ensures that we’re building the most reliable carbon frames possible and tunes its frames to a specific riding style using three different FOC fabrication techniques.

foc ultra FOC Ultra takes a minimalist approach to carbon fabrication using the fewest layers of hi-modulus carbon possible to achieve a stiff, reliable, responsive ride. Not only is FOC Ultra light enough to be used in peloton-ready machines like the GTr Carbon Team, but also it’s the fabrication process that X/C MTB pros Céderic and Cécile Ravanel trust to deliver them 2012 Olympic berths in London.

foc am GT’s FOC AM fabrication yields a frame that’s almost as rugged as our XM blend, in a lighterweight package by using smaller tube diameters and different lay-up protocols. But don’t let that fool you. Even though the force carbon — an FOC AM bike with 150 mm of rear-wheel travel — is lighter than many 120 mm (or even some 100mm) bikes, it’s still strong enough to handle a good whipping. Just ask Hans, who issued a whipping of his own to pros less than half his age aboard an FOC AM bike at this year’s Cabo Verde Race.

Speed metal. It’s not just for MOTORHEAD FANS anymore. Our engineers use proprietary alloy and composite materials when designing GT frames. By specifying the exact criteria they need their alloy and composite materials to meet, GT engineers can, and always will, develop frames that meet the standard for durability we first set nearly 40 years ago.

What’s your flavor? Coffee makers use different blends of beans in order to achieve different flavors. Similarly, we use different blends of carbon to achieve distinct riding characteristics, and to optimize our frames around a particular riding style. xm blend Used exclusively on the Fury, GT’s XM carbon is a blend of intermediate modulus carbon with an exceptionally high strain-to-failure ratio. Although more flexible than a stiffer, more responsive Hi-Mod blend, this blend is a lot less fragile, and can bend appreciably before reaching its break point. We didn’t stop there. GT’s proprietary Rockblock™ technology (made from ballisticgrade Kevlar fiber that helps protect law enforcement and military personnel) is also incorporated into the fibers on the underside of the down tube to protect it from rocks and debris that are sprayed up from the front tire. am blend Used exclusively on the Force, GT’s AM carbon blend starts with an XM blend before being substantially lightened with the strategic replacement of intermediate modulus carbon with stiffer, snappier himodulus fibers in areas of the bike insulated from impact by GT’s Independent Drivetrain™ Suspension System. speed blend Durable enough to be used on the Zaskar while still being light enough to be used on the GTr Team Road Frame. Good enough is never enough. Stronger frame need stronger tubes. Stronger tubes need either more material, or to be made into stronger shapes. To make our bikes strong and light, we opt for the latter whenever we can. There’s a reason the Zaskar is the only bike to win both a downhill and X/C world championship title: why the Fury was the only full-carbon bike in competition at the Red Bull Rampage and why Andrew Cho was able to log a million vertical miles this past season on one carbon fiber bike. We constantly look for, and address, potential areas of weakness in our bikes, and then focus on developing technologies to improve the longevity of our bikes. Examples include:

Forged Elements and Pivots GT forges (or optimizes with FOC) every single linkage and pivot on all of our dualsuspension bikes. We don’t stop there. We also forge other areas of the frame that are prone to constant abuse or stress, such as head tubes, bottom brackets and dropouts.

Gusseted Head tubes When you’re trying to defy what is possible on two wheels, sometimes a little extra metal goes a long way. That’s why, on select bikes, GT features head tube and/or down tube gussets, giving riders who embrace the earn your wings philosophy on a different level than most of us a little extra security.


11 ⁄2 x 11 ⁄2 The wider diameter of a forged 11⁄2" x 11⁄2" head tube yields an exceptionally strong, stiff structure with improved steering response, reduced flex and greater impact deflection at high speeds in rough terrain.

Putting a bunch of great musicians together doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get a great band. Case in point: Van Hagar. Critical as the materials and technologies used in the construction of a frameset are, they need to be developed in concert with the key element that most affects a bike’s steering and handling characteristics — its geometry. In order to enhance handling characteristics, GT carefully selects the proprietary materials and fabrication techniques best suited for each bike’s geometry, then pairs it with a head tube diameter that best meets the needs of the rider the bike was designed for.

11 ⁄8 x 11 ⁄2 GT’s forged, tapered 11 ⁄8" x 11 ⁄2" affords the same steering response and stiffness benefits of a 11 ⁄2" x 11 ⁄2" tube, but without suffering as much of a weight penalty.

11 ⁄8 x 11 ⁄8 Just because they’re light on the wallet as they are on grams, doesn’t mean that GT’s 11⁄8" x 11⁄8" head tubes are light on performance. Featuring lightweight, integrated bearing races that simplify bearing maintenance and replacement, and forged construction, these head tubes are as capable of handling marathon trail sessions as they are chasing points on the pro X/C circuit.
