Supernova Technology Performs in Both Bright and Dark Environments Optical lens screen material in dnp denmark products showcased at CEDIA Expo 2008 allows for higher contrast ratio without shifting the grayscale COSTA MESA, Calif.—August 20, 2008—dnp denmark, the world's leading supplier of optical screen technology, will demonstrate its award-winning line of Supernova projection screens at CEDIA Expo booth 357 in Denver, September 4-7, 2008. The screens, which come in a variety of configurations, feature dnp denmark’s proprietary Supernova Optical Screen Technology. This allows the viewer to experience contrast ratios up to 10 times better than those available with standard screens, while reducing distracting artifacts such as bright spots, dark corners, and shimmer in their home theater. “Our Supernova Optical Screen Technology allows consumers to watch movies and experience gaming in any environment without having to make accommodations for darkness or ambient light,” said Manfred Freiberger, senior account manager of dnp denmark U.S. “The perfect projection screen solution for today’s home theater, our proprietary screen material enhances contrast without creating an optical illusion like traditional standard screens; the result is a true white and a darker gray.” Supernova Screens are based on a revolutionary high-contrast filter that allows the projected image to be reflected from the screen head-on, while effectively absorbing light from other sources such as ceiling lights. As a result, the Supernova Screen is virtually unaffected by ambient light while also performing equally well in a dark environment. Now viewers can enjoy daytime sporting events, gaming and movies in a room with or without ambient lighting without being inconvenienced by washed out images. Each screen is made with seven high-tech layers that actively ensure a superior viewing experience. These layers include: * Unique optical lens film to reduce the impact of ambient light and thereby ensure better image contrast * Technologically advanced reflection layer for revolutionary horizontal half-gain angles up to +/- 85 degrees * Black color layer that sets new standards for color reproduction. * Hard surface coating for screen scratch resistance and easy handling and a no-shimmer image ISF Certified dnp denmark’s Supernova 08-85 screen material has been certified by the Imaging Science Foundation™ (ISF) for its outstanding image quality. This means the product exceeds the high-standard benchmarks that define the best video performance available for consumers. With a horizontal half-gain of 85 degrees, the widest in the industry, Supernova 08-85 provides the most uniform image with full 180 degrees of viewing, for an unsurpassed visual experience. As a result, the Supernova Screen is virtually unaffected by ambient light while also performing equally well in a dark environment. This innovative design allows Supernova Screens to deliver superior contrast levels, in all environments. Now viewers can enjoy daytime sporting events, gaming and movies in a room with or without ambient lighting without being inconvenienced by washed out images.

Reason #74 Why Readers Love Widescreen Review: I'm a fairly avid home theatre enthusiast and like to keep up on all of the most recent development and progress relating to A/V equipment and digital media. Of all of the publications related to this topic, WSR is the most complete, most thorough, and has become the champion of enthusiasts, such as myself, in fighting for the best possible presentation of audio and video in consumer electronics and broadcast media. In addition to the very informative columns, I am very appreciative of WSR's equipment reviews and its commitment to providing a relatively honest opinion of each product. It's refreshing to see a review that does not conclude with: If you like red LED displays, don't mind just slightly bright and forward sounding gear, and absolutely have to have to have your equipment in a gold-tone color, you should go to your nearest XYZ dealer and give an audition. It’s reviews like this that leave me mystified as to why people even bother reading these other publications. I hope that WSR continues its excellent work. - Elbert Lee 27645 Commerce Center Drive, Temecula, CA 92590 Phone: 951 676 4914 • Fax: 951 693 2960 Copyright © Information • All Rights Reserved • www.widescreenreview.com • Web Site Established In 1995

dnp denmark's (Booth 794) Supernova Flex Screen is a retractable, motorized version that blends effortlessly into any environment and disappears into a stylish wall mounted enclosure when not in use. Setting new standards in front projection, the Supernova Flex Screen delivers the ultimate widescreen experience outside the confines of a traditional dark room. Like the original fixed Supernova One Screen, the Supernova Flex Screen delivers up to ten times higher contrast than standard front screens. The technology used to dnp denmark's SuperNova Flex Screen develop Supernova is based on a revolutionary high-contrast filter that allows the projected image to be reflected from the screen, effectively absorbing incident light from other angles such as windows and room lighting. As a result, the screen is virtually unaffected by ambient light. "The Supernova Flex Screen offers the best of both worlds," states Manfred Freiberger, senior account manager for dnp USA. "It provides the superior image quality of optical rear projection with front screens' minimal space requirements and ease of installation." dnp's Supernova Flex Screen opens vast new opportunities for display solutions in environments with ambient light such as living rooms, bedrooms, and outdoor applications. At the push of a button, a fast motor allows the screen to drop down and retract into its elegant housing. The cover of the wall mounted enclosure is removable and replaceable, and is offered in a variety of elegant finishes including black, white, silver-grey aluminum, blond maple and cherry wood. The cover also comes in a special stainable surface that can be painted to match any décor.

How Much Gain Is Enough for Front Projection? September 12th, 2008

Hi-gain front projection screens have come and gone since the sixties going back to the curved brushed aluminum http://displaydaily.com/2008/09/12/how-much-gain-is-enough-for-front-projection/

monsters that bedecked some boardrooms. The idea has always been the same-to allow a projector with modest light output to overcome inherent ambient light and provide an image with adequate contrast. Of course, the tradeoff has always been with the viewing angle. Even trade-offs in vertical and horizontal viewing angles have been with modern versions. With the increasing interest in digital signage and casual home theater, Elite Screens, Inc. (Cerritos, CA; www.elitescreens.com) has entered the fray.

John DiLoreto Analyst and Editor for Insight Media Last week, the company announced its StarBright ultra-high gain material with an on-axis gain of 7. The material also includes an ambient-absorbing top coating to boost contrast. Insight Media caught up with Elite Screens marketing manager David Rogers by phone this morning to discuss the new product. "The main reason the company developed the screen is because in many commercial settings, as well as in some home theatre settings, high ambient light is still a real problem," said Rodger. "However, many dealers don’t carry ultra-high gain screens, which makes some people nervous about using projectors in conference rooms or living room because of ambient light from windows," added Rodgers. "With a StarBright screen, we offer a lot more creative options."

Elite’s StarBright material is designed with what the company calls "cutting edge technology." The back surface of the screen is a micro-textured metallic layer that reacts most to directly incident light giving it a roughly ±20° half-gain angle. A partially absorptive front layer is added to decrease the effect of ambient light. Light coming from the side (ambient) passes through more of the material than on-axis incident light from the projector. Unlike light rejecting screens from dnp (Supernova) and Planar (XScreen) the ambient rejection is not directional - vertical in the case of Supernova and horizontal in the case of XScreen. According to Rodgers, the screen material was developed in the 4-year-old company’s R&D facilities in Korea and Taiwan and is manufactured in their own plant in China.

At InfoComm, Rodgers said that a number of Japanese start-ups came to them pushing a similar product from small R&D or OEMing from multiple parties. Idea guys with samples, he called them, looking for a manufacturing and/or marketing partner. So, the competition is out there. Acceleroptics presented a similar high-gain metallic front-screen technology for digital signage at the Projection Summit. But that was a rigid product fixed at 100 inches. http://displaydaily.com/2008/09/12/how-much-gain-is-enough-for-front-projection/

Starting at $1999, Elite Screen’s StarBright material is currently available in a variety of fixed and roll-up packaged formats. It comes in standard and custom sizes of 84 to 800 inches in 4:3 or 16:9 format. Custom sizes are also available. So, how much gain do you need? Clearly that depends on the combination of projector lumen power and ambient light intensity. In public settings for digital signage, another challenge is not just contrast, but creating a high-enough brightness level to compete with other signage. Historically, rear projection has been the best alterative for dealing with ambient light application, but high-gain front projection screens will now be better, thinks Rodgers. I guess we will have to wait to see if he is right. David Rogers, Marketing Manager, davidrodgers@elitescreens.com, 1-877-511-1211 Reply to the author « How Much Lower Can Panel Prices Go?
