What's New? OCTOBER EVENTS! FORDHAM'S CULTURAL CLUBS & COMMITTEES COMMUTER FEATURE: NYC LOCKDOWN & SANITY CAREER ADVICE FROM COMMUTER ALUMNI KEY DATES FOR VOTING IN THE 2020 ELECTION!

A Different Type of Fall Semester This September, CSA, along with the rest of Fordham's student organizations, was met with the challenge to deliver an intimate and welcoming experience through hybrid and digital programming. Though many of our goals from the previous Spring and Summer have carried into the Fall - including earlier events for commuter students, persistence in social media engagement with our followers, and more opportunities to get involved with CSA - many questions were raised on how to approach this specific semester. How do we incorporate inperson events into our programming that are both safe and engaging? How do we use our platform to acknowledge and confront racial inequity, as well as support our Black, Indigenous, and students of color? How can we support our New York City communities that are struggling under these current circumstances? These are questions that we have and are constantly brainstorming and workshopping on, and we are glad to have made some progress! In response to student engagement and programming, we held virtual events (such as Commuter Jeopardy and Speed Friending) an in-person Central Park outing that allowed students to meet other students and make companions during very isolating times. Additionally, with the collective efforts of the Fordham Initiative for Race Equity [F.I.R.E.] (comprised of USG, CSA, RHA, & CAB of Lincoln Center and RHA and CSA of Rose Hill), we have delivered COVID-19 safety tips that directly affect our neighboring Bronx community and collective promises to achieve race equity through our social media @fordham_fire. Going into October, we look forward to continuing to commit to these goals and progressing further with our work! Hope to see you at our general meetings (Thursdays at 11:30am) and events!

With successes in fields such as law, business, and social justice advocacy, here's what they want to leave with our commuter student undergraduates! BE OPEN TO CHANGE. How I Stayed Sane in NYC Lockdown When The #1 Attraction To This Place is Literally All The Stuff You Can Do By Gabrielle Charles [she/her] I didn’t. Ha! Just kidding....Sort of. As expected when one is thrust into the apocalypse, I immediately saw quarantine for what it was: an opportunity to get my life together! Finally I had all the time in the world to work on my supermodel abs, write an award-winning screenplay, and learn three languages from the close comfort of the one bedroom apartment I share with three family members.

Finally, I got lost in my favorite way: with movies and TV shows. (Shout-out to Film and TV majors!). With theaters closed and my AMC subscription rendered useless, I took drastic measures to recreate the cinematic experience:

Safe to say that I lasted three days before I chopped my hair off in an effort to do something, anything. The only worthwhile thing I accomplished this summer was getting lost.I got (metaphorically) lost in the trails of Forest Park, which is more forest than your local park and far superior if you enjoy getting away from the sounds of civilization, with the only down-side being the typical city-person paranoia that comes with being unable to hear traffic. I got lost in my work as an intern and a volunteer because yes, even during the end times, I’m a workaholic. I congratulate any of you who managed to relax this summer. Please teach me your ways. I got (again, metaphorically) lost around NYC. At first, I walked around surrounding neighborhoods and appreciated the little things. However, once restrictions started to ease up and transportation wasn’t just for essential workers, you already know I hopped on a free local bus to nowhere.

"*So* candid." Images courtesy of Gabrielle Charles.

With things starting to slowly but surely open up in the city but not necessarily get back to normal, I hope to find ways to (barely) maintain my sanity by taking the time to get lost. Perhaps a...boat-in? Gabrielle Charles is a Senior commuting student at Fordham College Lincoln Center (FCLC) from Queens, NY. She is the current President of The Writer's Room, a club for all things screenwriting, film, and television. Check out The Writer's Room on Instagram @fclc_writersroom and on Rams Involved!
