JUNE 1, 2024

Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of my wedding day, complete with a Disney Princess dress and McDonald’s catering. Some ideas changed, but not the search for my Prince Charming!

Levi and I met Fall 2021 through a mutual friend. Our connection was magical, as was our wedding day!

The ceremony was special - a Southern, classic wedding with white roses, baby’s breath, and the fragrance of rose petals filling Zimmerwald Estate. My grandfather offered the welcome and opening prayer, while my dad walked me down the aisle and then officiated the wedding. The feeling of love and peace was indescribable.

A seven-foot cross, built by Levi and his dad and flowered by my mom, dad, and me, served as a stunning backdrop. During the processional, our mothers placed white roses on the cross, representing family unity and loved ones no longer with us. Levi and I also placed white roses on the cross, symbolizing our union and the Christian foundation of our marriage.

The day was filled with unforgettable firsts: first looks with my dad, grandmothers, and bridesmaids; our first touch before the ceremony to pray together; seeing Levi with our dogs by his side as I walked down the aisle; our first dances; and our first stop as a married couple at a McDonald’s drive-thru in a 1966 Carolina blue Mustang convertible, dogs in tow.

The vows we wrote marked the beginning of a lifetime of promises. June 1, 2024, truly was a dream come true!

FEBRUARY 23, 2024

Our wedding day was nothing short of magical. As my husband and I stood together, surrounded by our closest family and friends, we couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude for the journey that brought us to that moment. From the early days of our relationship to the anticipation of our wedding day, every step felt like a testament to the strength of our bond and the depth of our commitment to each other.

We were blessed to have the unwavering support of our loved ones, and we thank God for guiding us through every joy and challenge along the way. His presence was strong on our special day, filling our hearts with a sense of peace and contentment that we will cherish forever.

One of the most touching aspects of our wedding was the involvement of my mom. Her love and dedication were shown in every detail. From her helping with the planning, to her beautifully decorating the venue, she ensured that every moment was exactly as we had dreamed it would be.

In the years to come, we will look back on our wedding day with fondness and gratitude, knowing that it was a reflection of the love that has sustained us and the blessings that continue to enrich our lives.

Allison + Chad

JULY 28, 2023

Chad and I are a Bumble success story! We matched on the dating app in 2019 in Northwest Arkansas - just after Chad moved there for work. After messaging back-and-forth, Chad noticed that I looked familiar, and he asked if I was the same news anchor “Allison Wise” on 40/29 News. (Busted!) I was attempting to be facetious by not disclosing where I worked. Thankfully, we hit it off after a few dates realizing that we both love food, travel and have a soft spot for rescue animals.

Chad always talked of this magical place in the mountains of North Carolina where his parents had a second home for several years. He loved to venture there for fly-fishing and hiking. We found out that Old Edwards had a cancellation and fast-tracked our wedding planning for a July date. After visiting, I knew it would be the perfect spot for our ceremony and would provide a weekend of fun outdoor activities for our close family and friends. For guests’ lodging, we booked Half-Mile Farm: a sister property to Old Ewards tucked away from town with a main lodge, cozy cabins, a lake, and mountain views. Getting married later in life (I’m 37 and Chad 44), we opted for no attendants or wedding party. We were married on Friday, and in place of a rehearsal dinner, we had a “Post-Toast Oyster Roast & Soiree” on Saturday! They loved the opportunity to have a day exploring beautiful Highlands, NC.

“I became fascinated with bridal. When I went into that world, I just fell in love with it... I've been doing that ever since.”

Lily Rivera Designs Wedding Dresses with a One-of-a-Kind Style

For owner/designer Lily Rivera, the creation of her own line of bridal gowns was the culmination of artistic expression, years of working in different areas of the design industry, and her connection to her grandmother. She has found that it has all added up to building a business that she is truly passionate about.

Rivera was brought up partially in Puerto Rico, and the other part near Boston, Massachusetts. “I used to watch my grandmother sew, and I would watch for scraps to fall on the floor and I would grab them for my Barbie dolls and make dresses,” she recalls. When she became a teenager, Rivera would draw up her own funky ‘80’s-style dresses, then have her grandmother sew them. She recalls carrying around her sketchpad throughout high school, in case a design idea came to her.

Rivera attended Bay State College in Boston, and graduated in 1992 with a degree in fashion design and marketing. Though she felt she had acquired the basics of fashion knowledge, Rivera found it hard to break into the fashion industry with no work experience. She landed two part-time jobs in bridal shops and discovered a new passion. “I became fascinated with bridal. When I went into that world, I just fell in love with it,” she says. “I’ve been doing that ever since.”

Rivera had to put her passion for design on hold to support her first husband as he started his career. Quick to utilize her textile skills, Rivera landed jobs in research and development and product management with the Sara Lee Corporation and Simplicity Creative Group, respectively. His job moved them and their children from town to town, preventing Rivera from accepting

the promotions she earned. She also did alterations and custom dresses out of her home. In those varied roles, Rivera honed her skills in everything from sourcing, manufacturing, pricing, and wholesaling- all skills which she now utilizes on a daily basis in her own business. “When I think about my life, all those little bits are coming together now,” she says of what she learned through those jobs.

After her family moved to North Port, Florida, Rivera finally opened her own little shop, Lily’s Alterations. Sadly, when her marriage ended, she had to close down the business and got a job as store manager of David’s Bridal in West Palm Beach. While Rivera reflects on this as a difficult time for her and her family, it led to her meeting her future business partners, who helped her acquire a storefront, and begin doing her own designs. It also led her to her true prince, Edgardo, whom she has been married to for ten years now. Her partners encouraged her to brand her business using her full name, Lily Rivera Bridal.

In February 2020, Rivera was selected out of 5,000 emerging designers worldwide to bring her designs to the runway for New York Fashion Week. “It was amazing! A lot of doors opened from that opportunity,” she says of Fashion Week, although she acknowledges that the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down her professional progress. “I didn’t let that stop me. I kept designing; I kept doing my thing.”

In 2021, Rivera moved Lily Rivera Bridal to a new, larger location in Punta Gorda, where she began building her bridal collection. Rivera designed the shop with the

workroom in the front and the showroom in the back, thinking that her customers would enjoy getting to go behind-the-scenes to observe the dressmaking process. “They’re fascinated to see my mess,” she says. “They want to see the fabric and the beads everywhere. It’s made such a difference in the business.” Rivera is also conscious of keeping her dresses affordable, with the majority of their prices between $1,500 to $2,500.

Rivera says she has a soft spot for her brides, and has been incredibly honored by the ones who have traveled to Florida just to meet with her. “I get to know them. It’s different from just a sales transaction,” she says. Rivera loves hearing brides comment on how different her ethereal designs are from the dresses in other bridal shops. Besides designing, her favorite part of dress-making is the beadwork, hand-detailing and embellishments- the little finishing touches that she says really set the dress apart. “I look back to a lot of old Hollywood and a bit into history books. I like to pull little things here and there. And I make it modern, so my things aren’t going to look like a period piece. My things are a mix of whimsical, a little vintage, but also a little hint of sexy.”

This Fall, Rivera is excited to roll out her new line of gowns, which she is keeping small (8-12 designs) in an effort to maintain what she refers to as ‘that slow fashion movement.’ “I’m trying to do something that’s sustainable, that’s meaningful,” she says. She takes pride in the fact that all of her dresses are made entirely in the U.S., and are available in multiple states nationwide. “My ultimate dream is just that. I want to see my dresses in every single shop in the entire country.” Rivera has also partnered with a Dallas tech company to create NFC block chain tags for her dresses, so each one is registered for authenticity to prevent counterfeiting. She can also use the scannable tags to send personalized messages to her brides and tell them all about their dress.

Though she admits to working ‘mad hours,’ Rivera says that she is now in her ‘happy place’ professionally. She loves getting to work with a micro-team of friends and family, including her daughter who does all the gown photography. Rivera attributes much of her success to a piece of advice she was once given about starting a new business. “You have to innovate, find ways to do things differently in the industry,” she recalls being told. “If you want to stand out, you’re gonna have to take some risks.” Rivera has certainly exemplified those qualities in the personalized way she built her business and the unique style she brings to every dress in her line.

MAY 4, 2024

We knew from the beginning we wanted an intimate wedding. The first trip we took as a couple was to the Smoky Mountains and it was a place we know we’ll come back to many times - so we decided on that right away.

Then we discovered Skywalk Treehouse - four luxury tree houses connected by bridges, surrounded by towering trees, and lit at night by bistro lights - creating the most tranquil and magical place for us and some of our family to stay for the weekend. Everything else came together pretty easily after that.

Our 20 guests were traveling from across 6 different states, so we had a hike Friday morning and a welcome reception that night at the treehouse for everyone to spend some more time together. On the wedding day, we went to separate treehouses to get ready before having our first look there. Next, we had our ceremony at a site overlooking the mountains, followed by our reception at a little flower farm nearby. One of our favorite parts of the day was having all of our friends and family gathered around the table for the most incredible meals by Farm to Feast. Everything truly came together perfectly.

Brandon + Christian

OCTOBER 21, 2023

Brandon and Christian met in undergrad at the University of North Carolina – Wilmington at the beginning of their Junior and Senior years. They texted non-stop for days before finally making plans to meet at Christian’s apartment. They spent the night laughing, and watching music videos, bonding over their love of music. Brandon quickly realized there was a softness behind Christian’s sarcasm and wit, while Christian was drawn in by Brandon’s ability to be so smart, and so goofy at the same time.

Christian casually mentioned that he liked tigers, a detail Brandon wouldn’t let go unnoticed and started to plan their first official date. He surprised Christian by driving him to Myrtle Beach to see the tiger exhibit there, where they spent the day walking on the beach and eating too many desserts, mostly funnel cakes, on the boardwalk. It was this thoughtfulness that made Christian realize he was the one.

They spent 2 years after graduation living in New York City where every time they would walk past the Rockefeller Center skating rink, Christian would jokingly call out “Oooh someone’s getting engaged!” to the large crowds–another detail Christian forgot, that Brandon wouldn’t soon forget. Brandon asked Christian to marry him in the middle of that very ice-skating rink in 2021, with their family hiding behind the barricade to share in their celebration. They planned their ceremony in the location of their first family vacation after moving to North Carolina: Asheville. They fell in love with it instantly and knew it was where they wanted to get married.

The couple wed in October of 2023, surrounded by loved ones. They wore Cartier cufflinks and Louboutin tuxedo shoes gifted by their aunt and uncle. Even their dog, Hudson, was a part of the ceremony. Their first dance song was “Lover,” by Taylor Swift, and they danced the night away on a breathtakingly beautiful dance floor with friends and family. They feasted on chicken tacos, salty caramel truffles, chocolate dipped graham crackers with toasted marshmallows, filet and chicken for the main course, and (of course) a cake crafted with layers of citrus, vanilla, and raspberry.

Brandon and Christian spend their days doing what they love: taking Hudson for long walks or swims in the park, singing (but mostly screaming) to Taylor Swift, and caring for their many, many plants.

Emily + Austin

MARCH

23, 2024

Dr. Emily Nicole Chan and Dr. Austin Edward Michels married on March 23, 2024 in Wilmington, North Carolina at Wrightsville Manor. Austin was born in Greenville, NC. He attended UNC Chapel Hill and NC State, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Emily hails from Newton, MA and graduated from Hamilton College with a bachelor's degree in neuroscience.

The pair met during dental school at Boston University School of Dental Medicine. After graduating with their Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees, they moved to Wendell Falls with their two maltese. Emily and Austin work as general dentists in Clayton and Louisburg, respectively.

On wedding day, guests were greeted with a gold mirror welcome sign and a champagne wall. A string quartet played in the background as guests took their seats. Emily walked down the aisle to “Halo” by Beyoncé, in a dress by Truvelle.

Food was the most important aspect of the wedding to Emily, as she built the Instagram account @ bostonfoodgram with over 100,000 followers. At cocktail hour, there was a raw bar with two live oyster shuckers, crab cakes, shrimp and grits, and a charcuterie table. A dental-themed escort display read “Extract your tooth”. Clear acrylic teeth hung on hooks, each with the guest’s name and table.

At the reception inside Wrightsville Manor, floral arrangements adorned the tables and above the mantle. Guests enjoyed a threecourse meal and a margarita bar. Martin from Active DJ created an electric vibe on the dance floor— everyone danced the night away!

HOW TO BE CONFIDENT ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

Some little girls dream about their wedding day - getting dressed up in an ostentatious wedding gown, proclaiming their feelings to their one true love out loud and having it witnessed by hundreds of their family and friends.

And some of you imagine yourselves in that scenario and think that sounds absolutely terrifying. A big dress that I have to walk in... in HEELS? Public speaking?! ALL THOSE EYES STARING AT ME?!

I hear you, friend. And I’ve heard it from brides over and over again throughout the years both in my planning business and as couples write into my podcast to ask for help. The most common way of it being said - “I’m not a big ‘center of attention’ person and I’m not super confident in myself, is there a way to have the big wedding but not feel like I’m being stared at all day?”.

And the answer - OF COURSE. Your wedding day is completely customizable and you don’t have to feel self conscious and defeated going into that big day. I’m here to give you 3 tangible ways to not only feel confident on your wedding day, but to change the way you view yourself and your wedding.

1. Surround yourself with supportive people ONLY. Now, this may seem like a given, but wedding planning has a way of drawing friends and family out of the woodwork with their “helpful” opinions and varying levels of wanting to be involved. When choosing your bridal party and filtering 2through all the well-meaning advice, truly ask yourself “Would I seek this person out for advice in a hard season in my life?”. If the answer is no, then take their opinion with a smile and say thank you, but don’t take it to heart. If the answer is yes, have those people be your rocks during planning and on your wedding day. If you can trust them during the hard times in your life, you know they’re going to be there for you on the best day. And having a solid support system can not only make you feel good about yourself and boost your confidence, but it can give you a sounding board when you’re not feeling 100% confident about something. And remember - just because someone is family or has been a friend in the past doesn’t give them authority to be in your inner circle. You get to decide that!

2. Find vendors that make you feel confident. Again, this may seem like a given but this can be easier

said than done! Sometimes the price tag on a vendor may win out over your personal connection with another vendor, but as the old saying goes “you are a reflection of who you surround yourself with”. On wedding day, you are going to see your photographer, planner and videographer more than you might see your spouse! Those vendors especially can make or break the vibe of the day for you. Be sure to find quality people that make you feel like the most important, beautiful, happy version of yourself because their attitudes will rub off on you and can boost your confidence in more ways than one! Plus, going into your wedding with the confidence of “I have a great team that’s going to make my dream day come true” takes a lot of pressure off of you so that you can focus on the most important part - you and your spouse!

3. Remember why you’re there

The big dress is nice. The fancy party is fun. And yes there can be a lot of pressure, feeling like everyone is staring at you (which they will be a lot of the time - you are the reason they’re there after all). But remember the real reason you are planning this wedding - because you fell in love with your person. Andthe biggest confidence boost of all? They fell in love with you too! They love the way you look right now, they love the fact that you might get awkward with public speaking, and they love you enough to want to declare that love in front of all those eyes. So bask in that all day! Any time you’re not feeling confident on your wedding day, take a look at them and remember why you’re both there and you’ll definitely feel better - I promise!

If you’re still worried about being the center of attention, remember what I said earlier! Your wedding day is totally customizable. If you feel silly in a big dress, go more casual. If you don’t like public speaking, do a private ceremony (or elope!) and come back to do a big reception later. No marriage license requires you to pour your heart out in front of 150 people! Whether you go big or small, always remember you are perfect the way you are and it’s completely okay to feel nervous about such a big day!

Tune into the Dazed & Engaged Podcast every Wednesday to hear more advice like this and submit your own wedding planning questions as well!

My wedding day was the most perfect day of my entire life. I have had a plan in my head ever since I was a little girl. But then again, what little girl doesn’t? I knew I wanted it to be the perfect “cowboy” wedding. When I met my husband Jay, and we started to plan our special day my mind flooded with so many ideas. We both have been involved in the horse world since we were very young, so it was easy to think of ways to incorporate that into the wedding.

The wedding took place at Tara Creek in Faison, NC. We were married at the back end of the property, just beside a beautiful field. Amanda and Lee (the owners of Tara Creek) did an amazing job at helping bring our visions to life. You could tell just how much effort was put into the small details of our day. The venue was decorated with cowboy hats, boots, cowhides, and even hay bales at the altar. Our guests arrived in their best cowboy/ western attire. Our pastor, James Harrelson, officiated the wedding, surrounded by our closest friends and family. The colors we chose for our day were turquoise and burnt orange, which were displayed beautifully with our flowers and table settings. For dinner, we had the traditional “pig pickin’” that included all the fixin’s that you would see at your family’s BBQ. Master Blend Family Farms did an amazing job at displaying the hog, and of course everything was delicious.

The one detail from our wedding that I will cherish forever is being able to ride my childhood horse, Nick, down the arena to meet my soon-to-be husband at the altar; it felt like my first love was walking me to my forever love. It was a day I will always remember and cherish in my heart.

Our gothic wedding was a uniquely atmospheric and deeply meaningful event, reflecting our distinctive style and love for the unconventional. The wedding took place in a setting that embraced dark elegance, with décor designed and made by the bride to match.

Guests arrived dressed in striking attire, embracing the theme with elaborate costumes fit for a gothic wedding. The atmosphere was moody and enchanting, with dark hues dominating the color palette—deep purples, blacks, navy and touches of crimson—enhanced by gothic décor elements like candelabras, skull accents, and a room full of flickering candlelight. It was truly a magical experience.

Hayley + David

OCTOBER 7, 2022

Hayley and David met in August 2017 while working as resident assistants at Clemson University. Their friendship quickly blossomed, and they began dating in a matter of 3 months. Several years of their relationship was long distance while Hayley attended vet school at UGA and David worked a full-time job near Atlanta. It was not always easy, but they made things work!

In January 2021, Hayley was at her favorite rooftop bar on a Thursday night where she was having drinks with her vet school friends. She was shocked to see David emerge from the elevator at the bar. Hayley said yes as the sun was setting over beautiful downtown Athens. It was perfect!

The couple quickly turned their attention to planning their wedding for October 2022. After touring numerous venues, Catawba Falls was exactly what Hayley was looking for! This hidden gem is tucked away along the Catawba River and has a sophisticated Southern charm. Hayley built her vendor choices based on deep connections with staff and their shared goals for her dream wedding. The interpersonal relationships she made set the couple’s minds at ease for the big day.

Hayley and David’s wedding day was nothing but extravagant! The sunny 84 degree weather and execution from each vendor made the wedding even more special. It was so rewarding to see the couple's hard work come to life. The memories made with family and friends were captured so beautifully and will be forever cherished.

Not every engaged man would agree to such a wild idea. But Chase did. Watching his bride-to-be present her powerpoint of the “greatest wedding ever” was impressive. But seeing the budget dip far below the average wedding cost closed the deal. He wrapped his head around the knowledge that they would be getting married around the world, and had no idea how it would unfold.

In American culture we often have a rehearsal dinner and a full day of wedding celebrations, then “call it good” until the one-year anniversary. Not for Alexis and Chase, who seek out adventure and consider travel in every decision they make, justifying its place in one of the biggest moments of their lives. Of becoming husband and wife.

More of a pilgrimage than an elopement, the engaged couple set their minds on 7 different cultures with personal meaning: to learn from each unique location. They wanted to meet with someone of faith who would bless their union, with others who could teach tradition and give advice. The goal: to simply let God bring them who they needed and be open along the way.

The adventure began close to home in Greenville, South Carolina. The South. Receiving a spoken blessing and prayer for both their safety on the journey and their time united as one. It was perhaps the easiest and least diverse stop, yet merely a portion of the Southern experience, as they had a reception party prepared upon their return. And per Southern tradition to bring good fortune, if you find a buried bottle of whiskey with their names on it, you will know why.

Continuing a bit further from home, the couple drove through the Scottish Countryside to experience a traditional hand-fasting ceremony. The beauty of windswept heather and roaring mountains, gleaming over

A REAL WEDDING STORY

Alexis + Chase

MARRIED AROUND THE WORLD WRITTEN BY ELLIE THOMPSON

vast, open expansions of green, was perhaps the most awe-inspiring view on the trip. The unusually warm 75-degree day was perfect for Alexis’s custom-made, forest green, chiffon wedding gown designed by South Carolina seamstress Latoya McKinney. Exchanging their vows in intimate privacy amongst the forest trees, the couple knew this would be a hard stop to beat.

Yet the journey kept getting better as they exited the next plane in a new city: Barcelona, Spain. Where vibrant colors and intricate architectural designs were everywhere, but churches were not. Running out of options as they sought someone to speak over their marriage, they ended up at a convent, where English wasn’t an option and Spanish wasn’t spoken by either bride or groom.

Thanks to friendly smiles and years of practice with Charades, they were able to explain their pilgrimagepurpose to a novice nun. She beamed with excitement, turning to explain their story in Spanish to 90-year old Padre Pedro, the convent Father. Bringing them by hand to the altar, flipping through a giant, old bible, he married them in Latin. Tears strolled down Alexis’s face as both she and Chase knew this was special.

Details from each country could be written into entire articles of their own. Perhaps sharing the traditions practiced or the wisdom given. The way travel brings trouble such as weight limits with 7 wedding gowns or the mishaps of many planes, trains, and automobiles on strict schedules. Which was certainly a trial as they arrived in their next culture. Italy. Flying into Rome, boarding 3 different trains, hoping their 11pm taxi driver would be there to drive to the tiny, Tuscan town of Pienza another hour away.

But the details and facts will fade, while the memory and images of an intimate photoshoot in the wild

countryside of Tuscany–with its rolling hills and tallest Cyprus trees–will remain. Wearing a gown from South Carolina’s wedding boutique The Dressing Room South, light layers were needed as the couple shared a moment of gratitude overlooking the sun-bathed hills. Celebrating their fourth experience of learning, blessings, and opportunities ahead as a married couple.

Naturally, the “City of Love” needed to have a place on the list. Paris is a romantic city with its beautiful language, lust for love, and home to Sacre Coeur, Alexis’s favorite church. However, this stop posed to be the most difficult, with heavy rains, unfriendly locals, and strict Catholic rules. Italy and Spain had also been Catholic, yet every church in Paris–which were few–turned them away. A priest at Sacre Coeur blessed the couple individually and gave wonderful wishes of love, but Paris easily could have become the most disappointing stop if it hadn’t been for fellow tourists from around the world offering their blessings and advice in place of the French. The bonus of Paris will always be new friendships with the people from Malaysia, Japan, England, Turkey, etc. Allowing Paris to keep its nickname, “City of Love,” after all.

The train to their 6th destination brought them through fields and farm lands, forests and small village towns, into the history and color of Würzburg, Germany–Chase’s favorite stop along the way, and family home to Alexis’s Maid of Honor. The bride was led down the tree-lined aisle of a bright, yellow summer palace, wearing a traditional wedding Dirndl, and given away by her host.

This ceremony was filled with both old and new. Both German and American. And for the first time, the couple kissed as the newly pronounced “man and wife.” Many tears of joy were shed both at the ceremony and in the presence of a welcoming, warm, local pastor who spoke a blessing over the marriage with deep thought and love. Though none of it was in English, this was perhaps the most overwhelmingly emotional stop of them all.

The bride and groom turned their attention toward home, beginning the long journey to the North: Their seventh and final cultural stop just outside Canada in Alexis’s hometown of Duluth, Minnesota. Initially, their blessing came with unexpected twists, but the plan God had for them was far greater than the one they had for themselves.

The kind woman who had prepared her blessing and advice for weeks was unable to meet. She created

articulate and precise notes to share and they knew her prayers were with them. In place, the couple video-called a church friend they deeply respected, who–within the hour–prepared beautiful spoken words. Alexis built her own wedding gown of light blue tulle to resemble the Lake Superior waves, was given away by her father, shared moments of preparation with her mother, and the couple publicly repeated the vows they had spoken in Scotland.

As they returned home to South Carolina, attention turned to the party ahead, which was filled with traditions from all the cultures they visited. And all the gowns, which were beautifully displayed for their friends and family to see. When asked the greatest lesson the couple learned along the way, they summed it up in three simple words. “God is love.”

The immense amount of knowledge gained, the deeper details and trials experienced, will all be openly shared in Alexis’s new book, More Than a Day, which you can pick up when published later this year. For now, the couple encourages others to follow their own path of love, to release themselves from the limiting rules and societal expectations surrounding marriage, and to live in a way that allows them to grow together.

They are currently looking forward to experiencing a honeymoon in a similar fashion once the dust settles on a new house and new union–perhaps even a sequel focused on maternity in the future. To them, the opportunities to learn together are endless.

Renee + Michael

APRIL 19, 2024

Michael and I became friends in 1987 while in college at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. We were reconnected 30+ years later by one of my daughters (Kristen Wilhoit) who was working at a senior living community where Michael was looking for a new apartment for his mother when they met. Having both been down this road twice before, neither one of us were looking to date any more, or get married. But God had a different plan for Michael and I.

Michael was a bachelor with no kids. I was a single mother of 3 adult girls, a grandmother of 5, and on a journey I would not want anyone new to be a part of. I had been diagnosed with severe lung disease caused by a genetic disorder and was given a life expectancy of approximately 5 years without augmentation therapy, and possibly 10-15 years with weekly infusions and a potential for double lung transplants. I have gone to weekly infusions for the last 10 years and have learned to live with this condition and still love life!

With the foundation of friendship built so many years ago, Michael and I never knew what that bond would lead to today. Our love has shown us that God truly does push us to love, and that we are all worthy of love, no matter what circumstances lie ahead or behind us! We are forever grateful for His intervention in both of our lives, and so happy to blend our beautiful families.

Selina + Daniel

OCTOBER 21, 2023

I was never the type to have a Pinterest board with what I envisioned for a wedding or engagement, let alone a ring. We had discussed marriage but never set a plan. The thing about Daniel is that he is good at observing the things I love. Daniel proposed to me in New York City, overlooking the Chrysler building–a city that I had always watched on TV, and he knew I loved so much. To others, this seemed like a long overdue engagement, since we had already been together for ten years.

We met Freshman year of high school. Daniel was the new kid at school who was sociable and had no trouble making new friends. But me? Well, I had a small group of friends and mainly stuck to my books. We were complete opposites. We had mutual friends but never acknowledged each other in school. The summer of Freshman year, I decided to message him on Facebook and the rest is history. To this day, he teases me for messaging him first, but I just had a crush on the new guy.

To bring us back to the engagement, we didn’t feel like it was overdue. Although we had been together for so long, we had only started to get to know and love each other as adults. Love was the focus when planning our wedding day. I wanted our guests to not only feel the love we felt for each other, but also the love we felt for them.

Chrislyn + Brian

JULY 15, 2023

What a wonderful wedding was celebrated for Brian and Chrislyn as their love story unfolded at the beautiful Carmel Country Club. Surrounded by the warmth of their vibrant friend groups and loving family, the couple's union was nothing short of magical. Brian and Chrislyn, known for their lively personalities, shared laughter and cherished moments with friends who stood by their sides on this joyous occasion.

To add a unique touch, the couple decided on a heartfelt first look, exchanging vows in a sweet moment that became a highlight of the day. Against the backdrop of the golf course, the bridal party captured timeless portraits, reflecting the genuine love shared between Brian and Chrislyn.

Brian's side of the bridal party included high school friends and fellow football teammates, bringing a nostalgic and spirited vibe to the celebration. On Chrislyn's side, family and friends from college joined her, creating a harmonious blend of relationships that have shaped their journey.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, guests made their way to the reception, greeted by stunning florals that perfectly mirrored Brian and Chrislyn's romance. The attentive staff at the country club, along with dedicated vendors, collaborated to create a day that was nothing short of magical.

As Brian and Chrislyn step into the next chapter of their journey, their hearts overflow with gratitude for the incredible support from family, friends, and the outstanding vendors who truly are the MVPs of this unforgettable day. Thank you all for being part of Brian and Chrislyn's joyous celebration, forever etched in the tapestry of their love story.

CELEBRATING ANNIVERSARY STORIES

Janet & Roy

Married 60 Years

As young adults, Janet and Roy were introduced by Janet’s brother. When Roy was approved to join the Air Force, he visited Janet’s family and announced that they wanted to get married. “I was a Pentecostal, and Janet’s family, at the time, were Jehovah’s Witnesses. So I was kind of forbidden.” He explained that he was leaving for 6 months of basic training, and asked for permission to date Janet. They initially agreed, but after his departure told Janet she couldn’t see him again. “So the next time she saw me, we ran off to Elizabeth City and got married [by the] justice of the peace,” Roy says. Janet and Roy share that the justice of the peace helped to make their day special, offering two ceremonies–a secular one, or a Christ-centered one–and took the time to pray over them.

Janet and Roy built their love for each other while building their life together. “We’ve worked together, and we try to out-give each other. We even learned to cook together,” Janet laughs. Roy agrees, joking, “When we first got married, we cooked spaghetti to the point we don’t eat it anymore. But we did it together.” They believe that a foundation of faith in God and a generous spirit are the secret to a happy, healthy marriage. And even after 60 years, the couple are still in awe of each other. “I married the most incredible woman. She’s one-of-a-kind,” Roy says. “He’s put our family first,” Janet shares. “He’s always been the head of the family, yet he looks to me when we’re making decisions, and we pray about it.”

Janet and Roy will celebrate their 60th anniversary this October. Over the years, Roy became a beloved part of Janet’s family. Janet says they wish they could have had a wedding with family present: “I didn’t really miss all the bells and whistles, but I did miss my family.” She says that they always encourage young couples to “just go ahead and plan your wedding, and have the family [there].” The couple feel blessed to have a big, beautiful family–they will celebrate this year’s anniversary with their 4 kids, 15 grandkids, and 24 great-grandkids.

JoAnn & Russell

Married 61 Years

JoAnn met Russell in 1959 when she pulled into the local gas station to pump five gallons (a dollar’s worth) of gas. A friendly, red-headed attendant hopped out to pump her gas, and also washed her windows, and checked her tires. “I thought I’d never get to work,” JoAnn recalls. Russell thought she was a ‘beautiful gal’ and (through a mutual friend) asked if he could take her out for a hamburger at The Little Boy in Canton, North Carolina. “And we’re still eating hamburgers today.” That June, the couple were married in a $2 ceremony in Walhalla, South Carolina, which Russell says was well worth it. They just celebrated their 61st anniversary.

“Russell is my good luck charm. There’s not enough good adjectives in the book to describe that man,” JoAnn says. “Sometimes I think he just lives to make me happy. He takes care of all of us.” She goes on to say that he is also a wonderful father to their two adult children, as well as grandfather to their two grandchildren. “She just got more beautiful every year,” Russell says of JoAnn. “She’s the most wonderful woman in the world. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect mate.”

When asked for the secret to a long and happy marriage, the couple agrees that they have always relied on love, commitment, cooperation, and their faith. Russell states that the pair has never had an argument. “We had words once in a while, but I never got to use mine,” he jokes. “It’s been a wonderful life. I’d have done it all over again- I’d probably have married her sooner.”

Engagement Session Q&A

Preparing for your engagement session requires careful planning to ensure your photos turn out beautifully. Understanding the significance of the shoot and selecting the perfect location and photographer are crucial. As a photographer myself, I appreciate working with couples who are organized and have a clear vision. To begin, consider these important questions.

Are Engagement Photos Really Necessary?

Engagement photos are more than just a lead-up to your wedding pictures. They capture the essence of your relationship in a relaxed setting, providing a personal touch that formal wedding photos do not always possess. These images are timeless keepsakes and ideal for save-the-dates, wedding décor, and home displays. They also let you get comfortable with your photographer, helping ease any prewedding nerves.

Where Should We Go?

Choosing the right location for your engagement photos is essential. Start by deciding on the vibe you want to capture. Consider if there is a spot with special meaning for you and your partner–or if you prefer a romantic, nature-filled setting, a vibrant urban backdrop, or a cozy, intimate atmosphere. The location should reflect your relationship’s essence. Whether it is a scenic park, a bustling city street, or a favorite café, having a clear vision will help you select a site that enhances the mood of your photos. Locations can be local or even distant dream destinations. In my company, I offer couples a choice between a traditional engagement session or an adventure session, where we travel to a stunning location to capture their love.

Where Can I Find a Photographer?

If you do not have a specific photographer in mind, start by researching online and through social media. Read client reviews and check the photographer’s portfolio for consistency and quality. Look for a style that matches your vision—candid, traditional, artistic, or a mix. Schedule a consultation to ensure you feel comfortable with them and discuss your needs. Confirm that their pricing fits your budget and ask for sample online galleries of their work to see full sessions, not just highlights. Finally, review their contracts, cancellation policies, and delivery timelines to avoid surprises. Most importantly, find a photographer whose personality meshes well with yours. If you are looking for a fun session, find someone who embodies that in their conversation and their work.

What Should We Wear?

When choosing outfits for your photos, consider the vibe you want–romantic, casual, or formal—and opt for coordinating outfits that are not overly matchy-matchy. Select colors

and patterns that complement the location without being distracting. It is so important to feel confident and comfortable in what you wear. Bring two to three outfits for variety. Avoid graphic and baggy clothes, overtanning, and distracting patterns. Ultimately, let your photos reflect your unique style.

How Long Are Sessions and What Time Should We Begin?

Engagement sessions usually last one to two hours, though some photographers may offer extended time depending on the location and number of outfits. The best times for sessions are typically the first and last two hours of sunlight. While some photographers, like me, prefer the warm, soft light of golden hour, others might favor more direct sunlight. Choose a style and timing that aligns with your vision, and trust your photographer to capture the look you desire.

How Can We Make the Most of Our Engagement Session?

To maximize your engagement session, embrace your photographer’s creative vision and be open to trying unique ideas. Trust their expertise to capture distinctive shots that set your photos apart. While the photographer focuses on capturing the essence of your relationship, stay natural and affectionate—feel free to kiss and embrace to highlight your connection. Consider pampering yourself beforehand. Research potential locations and consider meeting or video chatting with your photographer to brainstorm creative concepts. Sharing inspiration from Pinterest or magazines can also help spark new ideas. Most of all, have fun!

SEPTEMBER 23, 2023

Taylor and I have known each other since the ninth grade. We were great friends and hung out in the same circles throughout our high school years. While we always had feelings for one another, the timing just never seemed to work out. When we graduated, Taylor moved to Nashville to pursue his career in the music industry. While he was away, we communicated every now and then and kept up with one another, always interested in what the other was doing. As fate would have it, Taylor was relocated back to Charlotte for a music opportunity a few years after moving. We reconnected almost instantly and have been together ever since. Looking back, we've realized that the time we spent as friends for so many years laid the foundation for the amazing relationship that we have.

Jessica + Dustin

NOVEMBER 11, 2023

Dustin and I met online through Facebook, a modern twist to a timeless story. Though I turned him down the first time he asked me out, Dustin’s persistence paid off. He often jokes that I finally came to my senses, and indeed, I did. From that moment on, our love story began to unfold in the most beautiful way.

What truly won my heart was seeing Dustin as an amazing father, not just to his daughter but to my girls as well. His unwavering love and dedication to our blended family solidified my feelings. During a family vacation, on a serene beach, Dustin proposed, creating a memory we will cherish forever.

Our wedding at Rocking B Farms in Clyde, NC, was a dream come true. Having been married before, both of us liked to take the long way around to find the right road to happiness. We joke that we had to get lost a few times before finding our way to each other. Our wedding was an intimate, rustic celebration with our daughters as our only wedding party, making it deeply personal and special.

One unforgettable moment during our ceremony was exchanging the vows we had written ourselves. Dustin surprised me with a quote from Dr. Seuss: "You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep, because reality is finally better than your dreams." He then expressed that he stood before something he never thought he would have—a complete family. Hearing him say that made my heart melt.

Our wedding was perfect in its simplicity. Everything was DIY or thrifted, focusing on what truly mattered—our love, our vows, and sharing this day with our family, friends, and, most importantly, our three girls.

Our journey reminds us that true love is worth waiting for. No matter how many detours you take, there is someone special out there for everyone, ready to turn dreams into reality.

There was a lot that led up to our special day, beginning with our engagement on May 14, 2021. We immediately started planning and decided we wanted to have our wedding in Wilmington, North Carolina, where Sean’s parents had just moved from our hometown in Northport, NY. From there, everything fell into place.

We explored barn style weddings (my inspiration was April Kepner and Jackson Avery’s wedding on Grey’s Anatomy mixed with Bella’s wedding in Twilight). Our wedding photographer, Kennedy Parker, and our planner, Megan Smith, along with all our other vendors did all the work for us the day of and it was surprisingly relaxing for both of us…even with an impromptu hurricane Ophelia in the midst! While we planned an outdoor wedding under a big tree, it didn’t exactly work out that way. But it turned out just as amazing as we could’ve imagined, thanks to our vendors’ help. Our photographer was still able to capture us outside under that tree, even in the storm.
