2021

PLEDGE

From The President’s Desk Dear CRY America Supporter, 2020 was one of the most challenging years that the world has seen, and yet, CRY America was able to create happier childhoods for 18,488 underprivileged children in 2020! This would never have been possible without YOU. Your generous contributions helped vulnerable children from CRY America projects get proper nutrition, healthcare and vaccinations even in the midst of a raging pandemic. Your support kept them safe from child labor and marriage, even as such issues became worse during the COVID-19 crisis, and helped them continue their education instead. We wanted to share the work we’ve done and the impact we’ve had with your help and we hope that this newsletter brings you as much joy as it did us! On behalf of CRY America, please accept my sincerest gratitude for everything you’ve done for our children. May we continue to stand together and be the village that these children need to grow up healthy and happy. With faith & goodwill,

Shefali Sunderlal President CRY America

CRY America Project Sanlaap

Location: Kolkata, West Bengal Reach: 3 wards of Kolkata city Focus: Protection

The Problem Kolkata’s red light areas are infamous for being one of the largest in Asia. What’s not so well known about these places, however, is that they have many children. One or more adult members in several families here are engaged in sex work. Because of the cycle of poverty, discrimination, and the kinds of social pressure children face in these locations, they are often at risk of being pushed towards becoming sex workers themselves. Many are trafficked, and child marriage is often used as a tool by traffickers to take children away. Even for those who do manage to escape this cycle, several are caught with another problem - psychological issues caused by years of trauma. The Solution Even in neighbourhoods as difficult as the ones in the red light light areas of Kolkata, there is hope - so many children have found ways to overcome their challenges through the support of CRY America project Sanlaap. The project works to directly prevent and remove children from situations of child trafficking, child labor and marriage. It coordinates with local institutions, such as the police, to help rescue children from prostitution and apprehend child traffickers. Sanlaap reaches out to the communities in these areas to help stop these issues from further occurring. Children are also connected with survivors groups and provided counselling - vital to overcoming the deep internal struggles they are contending with.

How Bikram is overcoming his difficult past and changing his life! If you asked Bikram to tell you about his parents, he probably won’t be able to remember what they even looked like. His mother, fed up with their family’s situation, had run away from home. His father did the same shortly after. The young boy then grew-up in his uncle’s house in a red light area. He lived there with just the bare necessities: three meals a day, two pairs of clothes, a mat, and a thin pillow to sleep on. He started mixing with the wrong boys and got into trouble trying to “earn money”. However, Bikram’s life was about to change for good. CRY America project Sanlaap found out about Bikram. They counseled him, involved him in extracurriculars, and got him into school. At first, Bikram was not easy to deal with - he would drop-out of school and still do things that could get him into trouble. However, the team never gave up on him. Today, he is no longer wandering the streets and is working hard in school. What’s more, is that he is a youth group member counseling and giving advice to other boys that have gone through what he has. Stories of perseverance like Bikram’s have only been possible with our donors’ unwavering support!

COVID-19 Response 2,500 vulnerable families were provided soaps and play materials for children, 206 families were given dry rations, and masks were distributed to children and stakeholders across four wards of Kolkata.

CRY America Project DEEP

Location: West Champaran, Bihar Reach: 24 villages in Ram Nagar block Focus: Education and Protection

The Problem What if the only thing stopping a child from success was having a school that was nearby? This is the problem that children from many tribal communities in West Champaran, Bihar, deal with everyday. Here, due to the hilly terrain and remoteness of the villages, there are very few schools. Anganwadis providing pre-school education, and other support systems such as teaching staff, are also in short supply. When they are available, there are additional problems such as language barriers that make children’s learning extremely difficult. In many cases, children also lose out on a chance at an education and better future because of child labor and marriage - practices that are common in the region. The Solution When children have what they need to learn, grow and develop, they take amazing strides and cross previously unimaginable milestones. CRY America project DEEP helps bring these resources, such as Anganwdis, primary schools and secondary schools to the villages in West Champaran that most need the support. The project ensures children in the community are enrolled in these institutions, receive their services, and that these resources have the capacity to function and properly manage themselves. Where children are unsafe due to child labor and marriage, DEEP actively works to protect or help rescue them from these damaging social practices.

Raju goes to college after being a child laborer at a diamond cutting factory! Raju was going to school and was so close to finishing his education. However, his family had fallen on hard times, so the young boy dropped out and left home to find a job far away in Surat. He started working at a diamond cutting factory, but soon fell very ill because of the poor conditions there. Yet, Raju continued on for his family’s sake. It was around this time that CRY America project DEEP started an intensive anti-child labor campaign in his village. The project organized street-theatre (Nukkad Sabha), rallies, and cultural programs to help shift the mindset of the community on child marriage. Raju’s parents had been there too, and began to understand how permanently damaging child labor would be for their son’s health and future. The team also found out about Raju and spoke to his parents directly and they agreed to recall him from his job in Gujarat. Today, not only is Raju’s health better, he is going to college and taking big steps towards his goals! He is currently also studying hard for examinations to become a government employee. Inspiring stories like his, where lost potential is regained, have only been made true thanks to our incredible donors! COVID-19 Response Distributed over 33,000 masks, more than 12,000 soaps, helped connect over 5,000 families with rations through PDS (Public Distribution System), and ensured the distribution of take home rations and mid-day meals for 22 schools and 29 functioning ICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme) centers.

2021 Plan Highlights Working with 7 middle schools to start special classes after schools reopen Building capacity through workshops with 30 children’s collective leaders Identifying and supporting ICDS centers where learning materials aren’t available Connecting vulnerable children in the 6-14 year age group to the DEEP run library Identifying children at risk of child marriage and linking them with counseling support

CRY America Project SVK

Location: Mahbubnagar district, Telangana Reach: 183 villages in Mahbubnagar district Focus: Education, Nutrition, Protection and Participation

The Problem Imagine moving from city to city every few months? Having to make new friends and leaving them behind as soon as you got to know them? This is the experience of many children in Mahabubnagar, Telangana, who’s parents have to migrate seasonally for work because their agricultural labor at home doesn’t provide enough income. What makes matters worse for these children, however, is that they often have to leave school behind and begin working instead in painting, construction, cleaning and electrical work wherever they go. Girls are often married off as children over concerns of their safety or to lessen the family’s economic burden. What’s lost in all of this is not only their childhood, it’s their future. The Solution For the staff at CRY America project SVK, there is no better day than one where they have successfully managed to keep a child away from child labor or child marriage while ensuring they are going to school. The project works extensively to identify children who are engaged in or at risk of falling prey to these practices. It actively works at changing attitudes towards preventing these practices with the families in the area and monitors whether the children are going to school. Children’s families also receive support through being connected to Job Cards, MGNREGA, PDS (Public Distribution System) and other government schemes that help make them financially stronger and therefore less likely to make their children work or become child brides.

How brave Vardha beat both child labor and child marriage! Vardha’s life was never short of challenges. Her family was poor and in constant financial stress. Eventually, her mother decided to take her out of school and make her join her as a daily wage laborer. CRY America project SVK found out about Vardha and immediately intervened along with the Village Child Protection Committee (VCPC). They spoke to her mother and convinced her to let her stay in school. This was a big step for the young girl as she achieved the amazing milestone of completing 12th grade soon after! However, more challenges were on the way - Vardha was still a minor (17 years-old) and lockdown had just hit. Faced again with financial problems, her mother decided it was time to get Vardha married. They had found a groom and even had set-up an engagement ceremony. However, Vardha was a part of one of SVK’s children’s collectives, she knew what to do. She informed her Anganwadi teacher, who was a part of the VCPC, about the situation. The teacher then got the committee together and went to Vardha’s house on the day of the engagement. They managed to change the families’ minds and have them call-off the wedding for now. Without support, Vardha would have ended up in child labor or marriage and never finished her 12th grade. Stories like hers were only possible due to our donors who stood with girls at their most crucial moments! COVID-19 Response 7,200 families received hygiene supplies, 5,185 community members were made aware of COVID helplines, 4,137 families and 1,048 migrant families received information related to ration cards.

2021 Plan Highlights Ensuring 300 child laborers start going to school instead of work Mainstreaming 40 dropout children back into school Tracking all children in the 15-18 year age group to ensure they transition to high-school Helping 10 Anganwadi centers become ‘Model Anganwadis’ Providing life-skills sessions in the collectives for 300 children and 200 adolescents

CRY America Project KMAGVS

Location: Latur, Marthwada, Maharashtra Reach: 26 villages in Latur district Focus: Education and Child Protection

The Problem The community CRY America project KMAGVS works with in Latur faces a number of issues including socio-economic discrimination, a lack of economic opportunities and the need to seasonally migrate for work. In the middle of all this are their children, many of whom have to drop-out of school to work while others, especially girls, are forced into child marriage to reduce the financial burden on the family. These practices not only rob them of the chance to study but also affect their health, safety, and wellbeing. The Solution KMAGVS works directly with the community to change behaviors and attitudes around child labor, child marriage and the importance of education. They go door-to-door to monitor which children are in school, which are facing the threat of child marriage or labor and then work to address these issues directly with their families. They further work to develop children’s and women’s groups to help the community champion children’s issues themselves. The project also coordinates with the authorities, local bodies and institutions such as School Management Committees to ensure that children are able to go to school to realize their true potential.

How You Helped Anjali Transform Her Life! Anjali was a gifted student but her family was poor and her father did not believe that it was important for her to go to school. It was not until KMAGVS intervened that Anjali’s fortunes began to change. After Anjali’s mother successfully convinced her father to let her continue going to school, KMAGVS staff connected her with their adolescent girl’s collectives. That’s where she received encouragement and study support from other girls just like her. In July 2020, when Anjali’s board examination results were released, it was clear that she had lived up to her promise of making her family proud. She had scored 80%, the highest in her class! Her mother is sure that her daughter will now have a chance at a brighter future. “My dreams have come true and it makes me so happy when she goes to school!” she says. Anajli’s story, and that of many girls like her, have only been possible thanks to generous donors like you who help us and the projects we support continue their work for underprivileged children even in the most difficult of times.

COVID-19 Response KMAGVS conducted emergency dry-ration distribution to 795 households in 2020 (an outcome that was 166% higher than the original planned target of 480 families).

CRY America Project CHARDS

Location: East Champaran, Bihar Reach: 20 villages in East Champaran district Focus: Health and Nutrition

The Problem The area CRY America project CHARDS works in has a high rate of child malnutrition because of the social-background of the communities there and the lack of adequate health and nutritional services in the area. The closest Nutritional Rehabilitation Center (NRC) for malnourished children is in another block and serves only 20 children at a time. As a result of this, the community often resorts to home births and local healers who may not have the expertise to ensure the health and safety of new mothers and their newborns. In addition to the debilitating distance from medical facilities, local beliefs on medical care also impact the communities’ willingness to seek medical attention. The Solution The CHARDS team goes door-to-door to help raise awareness on the importance of nutrition for children and helps them access essential healthcare services. They identify both severe and moderately malnourished children, connect them to the right medical services and help monitor their growth to ensure that they’re able to maintain optimum health. The staff also actively advocate for more health services being set-up closer to these disadvantaged villages to improve their access to crucial medical care.

A Healthy Mother Gives Birth To A Healthy Child! When 20-year-old Kavita Devi noticed her feet swelling during her pregnancy, the nearest medical center was miles away and there were not many people to go to for advice. People in her community advised her to see a local healer or untrained midwife. However, Kavita had a deeper issue that she was not aware of – she was anaemic. It was not until project staff from CHARDS did home visits and escorted her to the nearest anganwadi that Kavita was found to be severely anaemic. The team ensured she got treatment in hospital and worked with local medical resources to monitor her. However, things were about to get even harder just as Kavita was about to give birth. Floods rocked Bihar and Kavita’s community had to take shelter on a narrow piece of land. A home-birth seemed the only option. However, thankfully, the CHARDS team was aware of her situation and managed to get a boat to ferry the expecting mother to the nearest district hospital. There, she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The baby was slightly underweight at birth, but with proper nutritional attention, got to a healthy weight within just one week! Kavita’s story is not just one of success and resilience – it’s now an example for the community on how important getting proper medical attention is for children and pregnant mothers. Stories such as hers are only possible thanks to the generous support of our donors.

COVID-19 Response The team worked extensively to spread awareness on the negative health effects of child marriage (which was on the rise in 2020) to families and managed to avert 19 of them. Despite natural disasters such as floods that occurred during lockdown, the team still managed to ensure that 356 out of 449 deliveries of new-born babies were done institutionally.

2021 Plan Highlights Partnering with local officials to create new primary and sub-centers for healthcare and nutrition Enabling safe deliveries in hospitals and health centers by expanding ambulance services Conducting a KAP (knowledge, aptitude, practices) study with 200 lactating mothers Organizing hemoglobin testing for 100 adolescent girls to identify and counsel those with anemia Developing model Village Health and Nutrition Day (VHND) in 8 villages

From a shy boy to a superhero for children! If you had seen Vishnu when he first entered his local children’s collective run by CRY America project PORD, you may not have recognized him. He was very reticent and people were worried about whether he’d develop the confidence to overcome issues children in his community regularly face. However, he was not only about to transform his own life, but those of the children around him. Through extensive life skills sessions and counselling by PORD, Vishnu slowly became more outspoken. He also learned more about children’s rights and started developing into a true leader! He is now in 12th grade, the president of his children’s collective, and a role model for children around him. Thanks to his hard work with the PORD team, 15 children at risk of child labor were identified and mainstreamed into education! He is also a strong advocate for gender equality and coordinates directly with institutions and the police to help stop cases of child marriage. Vishnu not only has great hopes and dreams for his own life, but wants to create a society where boys and girls are truly equal! This is the power of a child rising to their full potential! Transformations such as Vishnu’s have only been possible through the generous support of our donors.

CRY America Project KAS

Location: Kotra, Rajasthan Reach: 11 villages in Kotra block Focus: Education and Protection

The Problem Amid the semi-arid desertifying areas of Kotra, Rajasthan, there are many tribal, ‘Adivasi’ groups who have experienced many generations of inequity. In this landscape, you would find several buildings for services that are supposed to be there that are barely functioning. The hardest hit in these far-flung regions are the children of these communities who often do not get a chance to even go to school. For those who do, remaining in school can pose an even bigger challenge.

The Solution For the project staff at CRY America project KAS, seeing children making it to school is not their only concern - they also worry about how well the students are doing in their studies. The project takes many steps towards strengthening school systems through forming and bolstering school management committees (SMCs) and local community based organizations (CBOs). KAS also works extensively on providing remedial support and additional classes through the schools and community action centers (CACs). Life Skills and vocational training are also facilitated through many of the projects’ children’s collectives.

Only a bus stood in the way of Anita and her dream of becoming a doctor! Anita Kumari came from a small village, but had big dreams of becoming a doctor. However, there was only one problem – even though she was within walking distance of school, there were barely any teachers to educate and guide her there. She was despondent about where her future would go. However, this difficult situation was about to reverse gears. The team at CRY America project KAS knew that many bright and able children like Anita were struggling in school because of the lack of teachers. Together with the help of the District Magistrate, they managed to organize a bus service for teachers in Udaipur so that 55 teachers living there could commute to teach every day. Thanks to this one bus, 1100 children radically improved their chances of doing well in their exams. Earlier only 47% of children were passing, now 69% are. Anita herself scored a solid 61% in her 10th grade board exams and is raising her sights to one day fulfill her dream of becoming a doctor! Imagine if a simple shift like a bus for teachers can make such a difference, what many more of these added together can do? This is the powerful change that’s been enabled by our amazing donors!

COVID-19 Response

Food distribution was conducted in 262 villages and sanitary napkins were provided to 6,317 adolescent girls at their doorstep. 3,000 families also received support in terms of some regular government employment. 11,637 people also received regular employment by being connected to the MNREGA scheme.

CRY America Project MMKSS

Location: Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh Reach: 8 slums of Sadar block Focus: Education and Nutrition

The Problem The slums in Bilaspur, Chattisgarh, are very difficult places for children to grow-up. Most of its 87,000 residents are very poor and children often accompany their parents to work as rag pickers, domestic help and daily wage laborers. As a result, these children are unable to access proper education, quality nutrition and healthcare, and become very vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. The Solution Having access to education and functioning services can be life changing for children. CRY America project MMKSS works at strengthening services such as school management committees (SMCs), Anganwadis and Integrated Child Development Scheme Centres (ICDS), thereby ensuring that children have access to vital healthcare, nutrition, and education. MMKSS also works with these vulnerable communities to safeguard children against easily preventale issues by spreading awareness on the importance of proper nutrition, health, and education, as well as the ill-effects of child labor.

How Payal is able to continue studying even during the COVID second wave! Payal Kumari is a 10 year old girl who loves to play with her friends and go to school! She had just rejoined her regular classes in her hometown of Bilaspur, Chattisgarh, in March last year. But then, the lockdown hit and suddenly she could no longer see her friends or even continue studying. However, even during this crisis, help was on the way. To ensure children don’t lose out on the precious time they have to learn and develop, and to reduce the risk of these out-of-school children falling prey to child labor and marriage, CRY America project MMKSS set up regular ‘mohalla’ (neighbourhood) and online classes. Payal attended these classes regularly, and today, she is continuing to learn, even during the COVID second wave! However, she still says “I miss my school, my school friends. I miss playing.”, which highlights how important regular schooling is in children’s lives. This is why, alongside online and Mohalla classes, project MMKSS is working to reactivate the school system after the second wave. Children like Payal are able to continue learning and can hope to go back to school again, even in these uncertain times, thanks to our generous donors!

COVID-19 Response PDS rations were distributed for 1,177 households across 8 slums and mid-day-meal grains were distributed to 1,226 school children. 348 children between the ages 3 to 6 were registered for ready-to-eat meals at the Angawadi center. 650 adolescent girls also received sanitary napkins.
