Small-scale cruise ships - Nicko Cruises

Nicko Cruises offers surprise sea cruises with two ships: the World Voyager, with which Nicko also enters the world of expedition cruises, and the Vasco da Gama, which until 2015 was owned by Holland America Line under the name Statendam. Thanks to the retractable glass roof, the pool on the Lido Deck can be used all year round, regardless of weather conditions. An original itinerary is definitely island hopping in the Canary Islands, where you visit Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma and Tenerife.

The World Voyager is a smaller ship, with 200 passengers and 109 crew, which can also dock in smaller ports. The culinary moments on board are a pure indulgence, and the varied entertainment ensures that you will not be bored. Encounter: with a specialist guide to the polar regions.

“I have just had an indescribable experience,” proclaims Virgil Reglioni, as he tells us this story from Antarctica. “Leaving South Georgia, I had never seen such a concentration of birds and marine mammals. The animals were curious and approached us without worrying about our presence, because they do not see humans as predators.”

It was to witness such moments that Virgil Reglioni specialised in the polar regions. This Frenchman from a small town between Lyon and the Swiss border is a popular guide, and an internationally recognised photographer, who has already won several awards. Ten years ago, he left with his backpack to explore the wide world and pursue his passion for the outdoors and photography.

Seduced by the far north

His first year took him to the rainforest and local community of Daintree in Australia. He started guiding for friends and tourists locally, purely for fun really. The experiences then followed in quick succession, as Virgil Reglioni travelled to no fewer than 66 countries on five continents and lived in seven: Australia, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Greece, Finland, Iceland and Norway, including the Arctic island of Svalbard.

Virgil: “I built connections everywhere, but I felt I needed a more challenging activity. So I decided to travel to Levi in Finnish Lapland, where I became a snowmobile guide. There, I fell under the spell of the fascinating far north and the magical northern lights, for which I bought suitable photographic equipment.”

The northern lights are a unique feature of his photographic style, leading him to build robust and constructive compositions around this phenomenon. His photographs are the result of thousands of hours outdoors in snowstorms, strong winds, and extreme temperatures, and an enormous amount of patience for that precise, extraordinary moment.

For three summers, Virgil guided groups to go whitewater rafting in the glacial waters of Iceland, and along the rivers of southern Norway. Virgil Reglioni moved to the Norwegian city of Tromso in 2018, where he further specialised in Arctic landscapes and the famous northern lights.

Cruise ships

His new adventure aboard cruise ships began in summer 2021 on the Polar Front, an icebreaker with just 12 passengers and nine crew. He rolled from one experience to another, first in Svalbard and Greenland, on a chartered ship, then with Ponant and now aboard Silversea. This winter, the Frenchman is sailing to the other side of the world, to Antarctica..

Polar bears

Virgil: “You cannot disembark passengers without taking extensive precautions, especially as conditions change from period to period, with large fluctuations in the ice, for example. Generally, we explore by kayak twice a day, after carefully analysing the weather conditions and the ice. The preparation is even more thorough when we effectively go ashore. For example, in Svalbard, where bears live, we first survey the landscape from the ship for the presence of polar bears in the landing area. If there are any, three guides explore the area and position themselves at points with no blind spots, so that we can always see these potentially dangerous animals approaching.

So, safety for people and animals is a top priority. Besides, in some places it is too dangerous to go ashore, and then we opt for excursions by Zodiac, which allows us to observe seals, penguins, orcas, and whales up close in the water.”

Generally, the excursions and landings are adapted to the physical condition of the passengers, who are divided into small groups according to their level.

Virgil Reglioni collaborates with historians, geologists, glaciologists, etc. Passengers on Arctic cruises really do benefit from exceptional guidance to fully enjoy these immersive and unique itineraries.

These polar experiences are, unfortunately, finite in the future, as climate change is rapidly and drastically changing the environment at these ends of the world.

“Being a guide in the Arctic requires a lot of knowledge, but also careful preparation.”

Interview: A sustainable development in the cruise industry

The cruise industry is regularly the target of criticism. Is this criticism justified?

It is all exaggerated, and it is often magnified in the media. It is not correct to say that cruise ships are the big polluters. We do not deny the environmental impact, but we provide a controlled transition. The cruise industry has been aware of this for many years, and companies are making great efforts in this regard.

Our latest report reinforces the cruise industry’s credibility as an innovator of environmental technologies. We aim for carbon-free cruises by 2050.

Are these carbon emissions the main environmental impact of cruise ships?

Yes, but again we need to put things in perspective. The global maritime sector comprises a fleet of an estimated 60,000 ships that account for 90% of the entire world’s freight transport. Yet this sector accounts for only 2.5% of total CO² emissions, so the share of the world’s approximately 300 cruise ships is therefore very small. We are working to reduce this share even further, and we can say that shipping companies are leading the way in the maritime sector.

2,5 %

Share of carbon emissions from commercial shipping worldwide

0.6 %

The share of cruise ships in the world fleet

0.0144 %

The share of cruise ship CO² emissions in global emissions

Isn’t it mainly about emissions other than CO²?

Absolutely! The global shipping industry emits 10% sulphur dioxide, 20% nitrogen oxide and fine particulates.

The first cause is related to the type of fuel. For a long time, the industry used heavy fuel oil with 3.5% sulphur. Today, cruise lines use fuel with 1.5% Sulphur, and regulations now prescribe 0.5% in North America, the Caribbean and on the Norwegian coasts. Some shipping companies also already apply this standard in the Mediterranean, although it does not yet officially apply there. Agreements have also been made in some ports to use fuel with up to 0.1% sulphur.

How are other pollutants controlled?

There is equipment to reduce sulphur dioxide and fine particles by up to 97%. These are a type of smoke scrubber, with seawater sprayed at the chimney exhaust and then filtered in a closed circuit.

For nitrogen oxides, catalytic converters have been fitted to all modern ships, and older ships are gradually being fitted to reduce emissions by 90%.

Couldn’t the choice of new fuels offer a better global and sustainable solution?

Certainly, conventional engines are becoming increasingly efficient, and this has already significantly reduced carbon emissions.

The future lies in completely carbon-free fuels and the technical solutions that enable their use on large ships.

Since 2019, the number of ships running on LNG (liquefied natural gas) has been gradually increasing. This is the cleanest solution: it reduces CO² emissions by 20-25%, and nitrogen oxide emissions by 85% (without a filter), and also virtually

eliminates sulphur dioxides and fine particles. Moreover, new technologies are being researched and developed, such as a mixed LNG/fuel cell or an LNG/sail combination.

Finally, 85% of CLIA members’ ships to be commissioned by 2028 will be able to be powered by electricity at berths, allowing engines to be switched off in ports and significantly reducing emissions.

Despite the criticism, how is the cruise market doing?

This market continues to grow, and the trend is not going to stop. Many new ports are being built. In Belgium, Zeebrugge and Antwerp have fine cruise terminals, and why shouldn’t

Ostend focus on smaller ships?

There have been some protests at mass tourism. How can the cruise industry mitigate the impact of this phenomenon?

Let’s be clear from the outset that the cruise sector represents only 2% of world tourism, with a share of only 5-10% of the most visited destinations. So, it cannot really be said that our sector contributes much to mass tourism....

However, this situation does not prevent the cruise industry from being attentive and proactive.

Shipping companies are offering an increasing number of excursions during their stopovers. This is a way of spreading passengers over different areas, thus reducing the phenomenon of concentration.

Another aspect is itineraries where we largely depend on the behaviour of cruise passengers. For instance, some shipping companies have unsuccessfully proposed itineraries to lesserknown Greek islands. The public also needs to evolve and be open to stopovers that are not necessarily familiar.

Sea Cloud Cruises

Sea Cloud Cruises has offered unequalled sail boat cruises for over 40 years. The company uses the wind for its sail boats to give you unforgettable cruising experiences, proving that unique sailing discoveries and good environmental balance go together. It is always an adventure in itself when the crew climb the masts to hoist the sails. Everything is still done manually, and passengers can also join in, which is a quite sensational and impressive experience.

As well as the ‘Fine Dining’ menu in the restaurant, Sea Cloud Cruises also offers the possibility of dining on the lido deck at a time of your choice, when you can take advantage of the flexible bistro menu. Recently, the Sea Cloud Spirit was added as the 3rd ship to the Sea Cloud 1 and 2, combining contemporary gadgets with the nostalgic charm of sailing. There is plenty of space when you consider that an entire deck is provided for balcony cabins, and there are also an exclusive wellness and spa area, a gym with sea views, and a bistro on deck as an evening alternative to ‘fine dining’ in the restaurant.

Gone with the Sea Cloud

Barbados – Bequia – Grenadines –

Dominica – Iles des Saints – Saint Lucia

Sven Hoyaux, editor of the Porsche Magazine “Porschist” creates an incredible travel report for each new edition of the magazine. In this way, he has already been able to travel all over the world, each time with the common thread of finding a Porsche owner at the destination.

For one of these trips, Sven boarded the Sea Cloud. This is his report.

Island hopping in the Caribbean with the unique fourmasted Sea Cloud is beyond description. The magnificent 1931 windjammer, fully restored to all its glory and equipped with all modern comforts, is the showpiece of the German shipping company of the same name and takes its guests to the most beautiful places in the world. Passenger numbers are kept limited to highlight the exclusivity of the experience. For a Sea Cloud sailing cruise, even superlatives are inadequate.

At 8pm, the ship casts off the mooring ropes and glides towards the open sea. As the contours of Barbados fade, it is time to get acquainted with the other people on board. The party consists of a motley mix of Americans, Germans, Swiss and Danes. Some are seasoned cruisers, for others it is their first sailing experience. Everyone is clearly keen and deeply impressed by the Sea Cloud’s grandeur. The fact that we are only 30 passengers in total makes this cruise extra special.

BEQUIA

Our first stop is Bequia. A gem in the Grenadines. Just five miles long and three miles wide, it is located in the southern part of the Caribbean. Bequia enchants with its friendly residents and natural beauty and still retains all the charm of the pure Caribbean.

Today, the sails are set. The wind is perfect. The sailors deftly clamber into the rigging and balance on the yards. On this ship, everything is still done manually, with skill and muscle power, just as it was done 75 years ago. One by one, the 22 sails unfurl and bulge in the wind. The lady swells with pride. It is an unforgettable spectacle. All I can hear is the rushing of the trade winds in the canvas and the waves lapping against the bow. All is calm and time seems to stand still. With a rum punch in hand, I settle on deck and soak away.

DOMINICA

With its 72,000 inhabitants, this island is already an outlier for this region. Columbus gave the island the name of the day he caught sight of it (domenica, Sunday in Latin). It is the most mountainous island of the Windward Islands. Water flows from the dense rainforest to the coast via more than 300 rivers and streams, forming spectacular waterfalls along the way. The tropical forest also provides explosive flora and exotic fauna. This calls for further exploration. So, put on walking shoes and head into the forest. Under the tall trees it is surprisingly cool and after the many hours on board, a brisk trek is a pleasant change for the lazy leg muscles. A refreshing dip in the azure water rounds off the outing nicely.

A HOME ON THE WAVES

Meanwhile, the Sea Cloud feels like my second home. Nothing but praise for my beautiful, spacious (25m²) luxury cabin: king-size bed, mahogany furniture, spacious bathroom with all the comforts of honey-coloured marble and gold-plated taps. But of course, I spend much more time outside than inside. I know my favourite spots on board: for breakfast and lunch I always choose a table on the lido deck, the fourth deckchair on the port side of the promenade deck is the ideal place to read a book, sheltered from the wind and the sun, and to watch the sunset there is no better place than the soft cushions of the Blue Lagoon on the stern. Of course, you’ll also find me on the bridge every day. The expansive sea view you have here keeps me spellbound. Even though all the important navigational decisions are made here, there is absolute tranquillity.

TERRE-DE-HAUT

Iles des Saintes is a small archipelago belonging to Guadeloupe. Only two islets in the group are inhabited. Terre-de-Haut is one of them. French is spoken here. I stroll through the narrow streets of the somewhat sleepy town and let all the impressions wash over me. Small shops throw open their colourful shutters and display their wares.

SAINT LUCIA

Our last stop on this cruise. Visible from far out at sea are the twin mountains, Gros Piton (789m) and Petit Piton (736m), which tower out of the sea like milestones. The island’s original inhabitants considered both Pitons sacred. However, they are simply the result of volcanic activity on and around the island and formed from solidified lava. But they exude a superiority that frankly impressed me too. Saint Lucia’s extraordinary beauty earned the island the nickname ‘Helen of the West Indies’ after the Greek mythological figure Helena.

The Sea Cloud casts anchor at Soufrière, a fishing village on Saint Lucia’s west coast. From there, it is just a short trip to the island’s famous sulphur springs. The sulphur bubble steams, bubbles and sprays up at times. The temperature runs close to 200°C. Best to stay away from that. Besides, the very unpleasant smell will also keep you away. Then the visit to the botanical garden is a relief. From the height at which it is located, you have a beautiful view of Soufrière Bay where the Sea Cloud, which has become so dear to me, is waiting to take me back to Barbados.

Expedition cruise ships - Aranui ARANUI 5

Polynesia aboard the Aranui 5 from Tahiti to the Marquesas

Text and Pictures: Frédéric Van Vlodorp

Polynesia is an immense archipelago, as vast as Europe from north to south. A cruise to the other side of the world is an experiential adventure off the beaten track in pristine nature, between the sandy beaches of Bora Bora and the lush vegetation of the Marquesas.

The trip will be a unique experience aboard the Aranui 5, a passenger freighter for only 230 passengers. Cruizy experienced an exceptional cruise in French Polynesia, so we are happy to take you aboard the Aranui 5 to share our experience.

After a long journey, we finally stand in front of the Aranui 5 in the port of Papeete (Tahiti). The garland of flowers we receive on boarding and the music band immediately set the tone. The welcome is warm, with predominantly Polynesian staff. Aranui 5 promises to be a plunge into the culture of the Marquesas. The dance and song performance offered at the start is just a taste.

DAY 1 - Fakarava, after 450 km of sailing, is a small atoll in the heart of the Tuamotu archipelago. Thin strips of white sand, bordered by coconut palms, and above all, a clear lagoon. This Unesco biosphere reserve is a global gold nugget for divers. Our first dive in water of a lovely 29° delivers the first discoveries of the fantastic underwater fauna.

DAY 2 - A day at sea, in this case the South Pacific, gives us time to explore our ship, observe the sea and sky, attend fascinating lectures or learn how to prepare raw fish in coconut milk. We set sail for the Marquesas!

DAY 3 - The landscape has changed. No lagoon and white sand in Nuku Hiva, but lush vegetation and mountains. And already one of the highlights of the trip: an impressive dance performance in the heart of a sacred archaeological site that immerses us in the history of this archipelago.

DAY 4 - Ua Pou is known for its volcanic rock, which is used to make jewellery. The walk to the big cross offers views of Hakahau Bay, the main village. After sampling local fruits, we are treated to a second show featuring the cries of warriors almost in a trance, tempered by the incantations of women..

DAY 5 - It’s D-day for the few Belgians on board the Aranui 5! Hiva Oa is indeed the island where Jacques Brel rests after spending his last years on the Marquesas Islands he sang about.

DAY 6 - The southernmost island of the Marquesas is also the most pristine, with only two villages and accessible only by boat. In Fatu Hiva, women make “tapa” (a non-woven fabric made from tree bark) and “Umu” (a floral bouquet).

DAY 7 - Return to the island of Hiva Oa, where Jacques Brel lived. This time we arrive in the north, a place known for its archaeological riches. The Te l’Ipona site, nestled in a lush forest, reveals a sacred place that was reserved for society’s elite.

DAY 8 - At 6am, it’s all hands on deck for a hair-raising manoeuvre in Ua Huka’s ‘Invisible Bay’. The Aranui 5 has to navigate through a narrow corridor sandwiched between vertical walls. This island, the driest in the archipelago, is populated by stray goats and horses.

DAY 9 - Our journey is unfortunately already coming to an end. The containers that were empty on the outward journey are now well filled. We pass through Nuku Hiva and Ua Pou again.

DAY 10 - After a week in the Marquesas, the Aranui 5 sets sail again for the Tuamotu Atolls. This is a chance to explore the other side of the ship: the cargo side. The shipping company supplies a range of Polynesian islands, notably the Marquesas. At each port of call, locals await this vital life line with Tahiti.

DAY 11 - On the return to the Tuamotus, the typical postcard photo of the Rangiroa atoll resurfaces. Pearls are grown here, incidentally, one of the few economic activities on the island. We visit a nursery to understand that pearl production is a rather complex affair, involving grafting the oyster once or more with a result that is not always guaranteed.

DAY 12 - We knew Bora Bora from photos and reports, the reality is a thousand times more impressive! The island actually sums up the route followed by the Aranui 5, the sheer beauty of the clear lagoon waters combined with the lush and authentic mountains of the Marquesas. Admittedly, there is more to see than to do. A tour of the lagoon by motorboat is really a must, including a diving excursion among the rays and sharks.

DAY 13 - Papeete, capital of Tahiti. Let’s face it: the city is rather shabby and offers few attractions. The island, on the other hand, does contain interesting sites. A wonderful day to end an unforgettable cruise. This is more than a trip, this is a multi-faceted experience!

Exploris Expeditions: the new French expedition shipping company goes back to basics

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Interview with Philippe Videau, chairman and founder of Exploris.

The new French expedition company Exploris was born out of a longstanding love of discovery. Founded under the impetus of Philippe Videau and a team of experts, Exploris symbolises the desire to convey the passion for incredible destinations. The officers, guides and naturalists, like the flag of Exploris’s first ship, are all French or French-speaking.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and the mission of Exploris?

Philippe Videau: “My passion for the sea has shaped my life and my career. After 10 years as a merchant marine officer, I founded the world’s first expeditionary cruise company, La Compagnie des Îles du Ponant, in 1988. After nearly 20 years running the company and some wanderings, I have returned to my first love. In 2021, a new project was born with the creation of Exploris, together with an expert and passionate team.

Destination discovery is at the heart of Exploris. We really want to return to the pure spirit of travel and expedition. Above all, we wish to restore the value of people in the expedition cruise industry. We would like to share our passion for expeditions and turn our passengers into true explorers, make them aware of the beauty of the destinations we visit, and make them ambassadors of these regions. Communicating our enthusiasm, and living a unique and enriching human experience together with our teams on board, is what drives us every day.”

What is your objective?

Philippe Videau: “The intended traveller is first and foremost a lover of nature and its riches, someone who wants to combine relaxation and discovery and is a lover of small-capacity ships and the intimate and warm atmosphere that characterises them. We target couples and families, as well as solo travellers.

How will you differentiate yourself from the competition?

Philippe Videau: “First of all, by the size of our first ship. Our cruises are very intimate, limited to 140 passengers on board (120 for the polar regions). We are also distinguished by the language of communication on board, which will only be French; we are 100% French-speaking with top service. We also offer stopovers in the most remote areas, where few people go, for new and unforgettable experiences. The stopovers are also accompanied by nature guides, with a

ratio of 1 guide to 12 passengers (10 in the polar zones), well below the legal number, allowing us to be very flexible and anchor where there is no access to the actual port. Moreover, our expeditions are “all inclusive”, including the open bar, and land excursions offered during many of our stopovers.

We have also introduced the concept of “augmented travel”. While the Exploris experience is certainly lived during the expedition, every effort is made to ensure that the journey in fact starts as soon as the booking is completed and continues until after disembarkation: interactions with passengers before the cruise, meetings with the teams, sharing experiences and photos and maintaining contact when passengers return...”

Do you have any future plans you would like to share with us?

Philippe Videau: “The biggest achievement for 2023 is without doubt our first ship, the Exploris One, which should be ready to start its first expedition season in October 2023. It involves a rather minor refurbishment that will allow us to add a “French Touch” to the current interior, mainly in the common areas. The Exploris One is currently operated by the luxury shipping company Silversea (under the name Silver Explorer), and it has an excellent reputation for expedition ships. We are also working on the design of our next ships.

Soon, we will announce our Exploris Great Witnesses programme, where renowned experts in exploration, conservation, science, photography, art and culture will enrich the expeditions by sharing their unique experiences and insights with the explorers.”

“The unexpected doesn’t wait! Our story is just beginning and we look forward to writing it together with our future explorers.”

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises offers a wide range of expedition cruises with its 3 sister ships HANSEATIC inspiration, HANSEATIC nature and HANSEATIC spirit. These 3 ships were specially built for expedition cruises to the polar regions, among others, but equally to the Amazon, Fiji and Madagascar. They feature ecofriendly technology to sail as emission-free as possible and thus protect nature.

The designers of these ships were inspired by nature, and this is nicely reflected in the use of curved shapes, in the colours, and materials used. The nature experience on board is also intense, including two retractable glass-floored balconies and the Nature Walk promenade. Unlike HANSEATIC nature and HANSEATIC spirit, HANSEATIC inspiration is an international ship, which means that both German and English are spoken on board.

HANSEATIC inspiration : An unforgettable adventure and a careless luxury

Representing Hapag-Lloyd Cruises on the Belgian market, Davy Van Acker signed up for an Antarctica expedition aboard the HANSEATIC inspiration, which departed in February 2022. It became an adventure not soon to be forgotten, as Hapag-Lloyd Cruises emphasizes, and which proves that such a voyage really is possible. It is where luxury also means taking away all the worries associated with such an experience.

How do you prepare for an expedition cruise?

Davy: “Such experiences cannot be compared to a wonderful cruise in the Mediterranean. You read a few things about the destination to get an understanding of what you can and should expect. Most people go to Antarctica just to see one thing - penguins. You’ll see them by the hundreds of thousands. But there is much more to see, as the continent of Antarctica is as big as Europe. You take a look at the map and memorise place names, and once you are at your destination, these places really start to come alive. These kinds of trips are pure experience trips, on which you go exploring. On board, for example, there is a whole team of experts for the necessary support. Their lectures are also part of your daily preparation.”

Antwerp in Antarctica?

Davy: “There is indeed quite a Belgian side to Antarctica with Belgian explorer Adrien de Gerlache. Most of the islands and channels on the west coast were mapped during his expedition in the late 1800s. These include Antwerp Island, Brabant Island and Liège Island. They also gave the name to one of the most beautiful bays, named the Wilhelminabaai, but that, in turn, is because not the Belgian, but the Dutch Royal House had financially supported this expedition and so was nicely thanked in this way.”

The penguins of South Georgia

Davy: “Because of its location during the summer, this long and narrow island is the world’s hotspot for krill, the base of the food chain for life in the Southern Ocean, i.e. for Antarctica. Consequently, it is where the largest marine mammal population in the world is concentrated, on the eastern side of an island that is only 40 km long and no more than 6 km wide. The numbers are really impressive though, with around 50% of the world’s elephant seal population, 6 million fur seals, more than one million king penguins, the largest colony of Macaroni penguins, several million more Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins, and the breeding ground of around 10 million birds, such as the albatross among others.

You are brought ashore, by Zodiac, equipped with your Arctic

boots and parka provided by the shipping company, and then something unforgettable happens. All the penguins come to watch and step towards you as if to invite you for high tea. They are very curious animals.”

What is the best period to go to Antarctica?

Davy: “The expedition season for Antarctica starts at the end of November, but there is a world of difference between December and February. We were there in February, which means the end of summer over there. The ice conditions for the ship are also optimal then. There is less ice, which, by the way, is not a drama, because it is one-year-old ice. Once the Antarctic winter arrives, this continent expands 3 times, and the whole sea around Antarctica freezes over and becomes a sea of ice. In December, the story is completely different, because that’s when most penguins start laying their eggs; in January, you have lots of chicks everywhere; and in February the spring change happens. So, if you have the time and budget, it is definitely recommended to explore this wonderful destination during these different periods.

Typically, there are around 60 ships offering Antarctica, and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has three of them. That may seem like a lot, but many of these ships carry a maximum of 200 passengers, and everything is nicely distributed among the fixed landing locations. You can’t just land wherever you want. Each shipping company has to fix all landing locations in advance; often there are 2 slots per day per location, one in the morning and a 2nd in the afternoon, and no other ship may be there at that time. So, the chances of encountering another ship are actually minimal, knowing that the sea surface there is so immense.”

Lectures on board

Davy: “The lectures on board are invaluable and are planned as optimally as possible. There are usually 2 landings per day with the Zodiac, unless weather conditions don’t allow it, for example when there is too much ice. However, there is always a plan B, and this is always nicely anticipated during these lectures. You get the story behind each location visited, what you will see, and what should definitely not escape your attention.

Take Deception Island, the most visited island in the entire region, and a location that every expedition ship goes to. It is a volcanic area whose last eruption dates back to the last century. There was at first one big volcano, but it erupted, and now a large outer circle, called the caldera, remains. A small part of that outer circle is missing, and you can sail through

it, so you are in fact sailing inside a volcano. The remaining underwater volcano still emits a little heat, so the top layer of water is about 18°. You still have old whaling stations and scientific bases there, many of which have fallen into ruin. But it’s all protected heritage.

That’s where the Antarctic Plunge, or the jump into the icy water, is then organised. And that’s something special anyway, because it’s only that top layer of an inch that has that pleasant 18°, below it is usually just under 1°.”

Drake Passage

Davy: “For 15 days we had bright sunshine, and the sea was a mirror. Then the last four days were marked by weather

that more often typifies Antarctica: snow, wind, fog and lots of waves. Lemaire Channel was completely shrouded in fog, we could see the high mountain peaks rising in the mist on both sides of the ship. We did get approached by whales on all sides of the ship, almost all of them were humpback whales, but we also saw a small school of orcas twice.

The whole trip was already extraordinary; however, I still cherished one more wish, the real Drake Passage! I was allowed that wish at the end.”

“An expedition is living and experiencing. It is fantastic, it is fulfilling, but very tiring”.

Expedition cruise ships - Hurtigruten

Expedition cruise ships – Oceanwide Expeditions

Hurtigruten Oceanwide Expeditions

Hurtigruten ships have been a fixture on the Norwegian coast since 1893, when they originally provided a smooth delivery of mail and goods. Today, their ships sail to the Arctic and Antarctica, and many destinations in between. On each ship, you will find modern facilities carefully blended with the pure nature of expeditions.

In 2019, Hurtigruten added a brand new ship to its fleet, the MS Roald Amundsen. This state-of-the-art ship features new and environmentally sustainable hybrid technology that reduces fuel consumption, making it clear that hybrid propulsion is possible on large ships. A once- in-a- lifetime experience are undoubtedly the 10- or 14-day discovery cruises to the Galápagos Islands aboard the small expedition ship Santa Cruz II, to witness the iconic nature and spectacular landscapes of this remarkable archipelago.

Oceanwide Expeditions is a Dutch maritime company with a fleet of small expedition ships which primarily sail in the Antarctic and Arctic. Its expedition cruises are very active, requiring a high degree of physical fitness. The most recent and advanced ship of Oceanwide Expeditions, designed in response to the most recent requirements of the Polar Code, is the first ship in the world to be registered Polar Class 6.

The Hondius is the most flexible, most advanced, and most innovative ship in the polar regions, and it is perfectly optimised for exploratory trips which bring you close to nature. By keeping the shortest possible sailing times at sea, and by following rapid docking times, this maritime company allows passengers to spend a lot of time on land. There are on average two landings each day, depending on the weather forecast and schedule.
