In our humble Center on the corner of Saint Antoine and Larned we get to witness small miracles each and every day. Whether it’s a guest receiving keys to a new apartment, an individual taking courageous steps on the journey towards stability, or a community forming out of guests and volunteers, we celebrate every miracle — big and small — that we get to see.
Miracles also take the shape of our faithful partners, three of whom we honor this evening: the J. Addison Bartush & Marion M. Bartush Family Foundation, Nettie Seabrooks, and Jim Tobin. Each of them has been instrumental in the founding, growth, and success of the Pope Francis Center. Moreover, each embodies our core beliefs that only love has the power to truly heal — and that with every act of love and compassion, the whole world is lifted up and transformed into a more beautiful place.
The J. Addison and Marion M. Bartush Family Foundation are relentless champions of the Center. They generously funded the renovations of our administrative office, medical treatment rooms, and the necessary update of our kitchen, enabling us to serve hundreds of warm, nutritious meals each day. The Foundation was also one of the first major investors in our Bridge Housing Campus. They are represented here tonight by Joseph Bartush, Susan Bartush Cugliari, and Stephen Maxwell Addison Cugliari.
Jim Tobin, a retired executive from Magna International, has been a long-time supporter of the Pope Francis Center and co-chairs the Bridge Housing Campus capital campaign. His dedication to the mission is evidenced by Magna International’s $2.5 million commitments to the Center and the Bridge Housing Campus. A lifelong Detroiter and Holy Redeemer graduate, Jim’s tireless commitment to the City is exemplified in his community work with Focus: HOPE, Detroit Cristo
Rey High School, and Loyola High School. Once Jim is involved, things happen and success is not far away.
Nettie Seabrooks was one of the founding members of the Pope Francis Center Board of Directors, and has been crucial in guiding our ministry’s work and growth. She is a woman who has shattered many glass ceilings. Her illustrious career as a community leader includes director of government relations for General Motors’ North American Operations (where she served for 31 years), Deputy Mayor of the City of Detroit under Dennis Archer, COO and executive advisor to the DIA Director, and consultant for the Manoogian Foundation.
The dedication of each of these individuals and organizations supercharges the impact of our incredible team of staff and volunteers as we serve hundreds of individuals each morning. I am constantly inspired by the miracle that happens when we all work together towards a common goal.
With just over a year of construction remaining, we look forward with anticipation to the grand opening of our Bridge Housing Campus: the centerpiece of our plan to end chronic homelessness in the city of Detroit.
My heart filled with gratitude for you. The miracles that happen daily in our Center happen because of your generous commitment to our mission. Thank you for making all this possible!
FR. TIM McCABE, SJAt Lear we strive every day to live our core values of being inclusive, being inventive and getting results the right way. Our talented team is committed to giving back in the communities where we live and work.
Let’s make every drive better, together. Learn more at lear.com
The J. Addison and Marion M. Bartush Family Foundation was established to help enhance the quality of life in underserved communities with a focus on new and innovative programs.
Established by Detroit businessman, J. Addison Bartush, and now in its third generation, the Foundation was instrumental in renovating the administrative office, medical treatment rooms, and equipping the kitchen that Pope Francis Center uses to serve warm nutritious meals to approximately 200 people a day at its location on St. Antoine.
The Foundation was also an early supporter of the $34 million Bridge Housing Campus, purchasing the land in the Core City neighborhood. When completed, the campus will provide 40 individual apartments and services to chronically homeless individuals transitioning to permanent supportive housing.
The Foundation is represented by Joseph Bartush, Susan Bartush Cugliari and Stephen Cugliari. Susan also serves as a Pope Francis Center board member.
“While there’s been significant economic rebirth in our city, we cannot forget about those who don’t necessarily see or feel the benefits of Detroit’s economic renewal efforts.”
Vinnie Johnson and the Piston Group team are proud to support the Building Bridges Gala and Pope Francis Center’s vision for a Detroit without homelessness, where every person has the resources for sustained stability.

Longtime supporter of Pope Francis Center & retired executive from Magna International Inc
After moving to the Detroit area from Canada as a child, Jim Tobin fell in love with the city and finding opportunities to support its youth. Tobin retired from Magna International in 2020 after a nearly 40-year career of industry leadership and community service. During his tenure, Tobin served as chief marketing officer, president of Magna Asia, and held senior executive positions at Cosma International, Magna’s body and chassis systems unit.
Tobin has been a long-time supporter and contributor to the Pope Francis Center and co-chaired the organization’s fundraising efforts for the Bridge Housing Campus. In addition, Tobin’s community work includes serving on the Focus: HOPE Advisory Board as well as being Magna’s champion for the Detroit Cristo Rey High School and Loyola High School work study programs, offering educational and career opportunities to nearly 50 Detroit-area students since its inception in 2014.
Celebrated community leader with past positions at General Motors, the City of Detroit, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Manoogian Foundation
Over a nearly 50-year career, Nettie Seabrooks worked to make life better for the people of Detroit and Michigan. After earning degrees in Chemistry and Library Science, Seabrooks spent 31 years at General Motors, retiring as director of government relations for the automaker’s North American Operations.
Seabrooks served as chief operating officer and chief of staff for Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, earned a Master of Arts degree in Art History, and then spent 10 years at the Detroit Institute of Arts in various capacities, including chief operating officer. One of the founding members of the Pope Francis Center board, Seabrooks has been crucial in guiding the organization’s work and growth.
We appreciate your dedication and values of serving and empowering others for the community.
