For many rural areas in New Zealand, the local primary school is the hub of the community. Where community halls may have been mothballed, or local pubs shut down, schools offer rural areas a meeting place – an area landmark that equals any Sky Tower or harbour bridge. The Pass to Pub was originally conceived as part of a much longer multi-sport race that ran from Mount Cook to Christchurch – in a similar vein to the Coast to Coast – with cycling, kayaking, off road running and mountain biking, run on shingle track roads. The multi-sport event did not take off, so it was the mountain biking that became a mainstay feature. Its first incarnations were known as the Pub to Pub Race, before the Burke’s Pass Hotel was destroyed by fire. The course has changed over the years to move away from shingle roads and into neighbouring farms, a vast majority of which belong to Farmlands shareholders. Chris Thomas from Special Events Aoraki, which organises the Pass to Pub event, says a partnership between the race organisers and Albury School was forged in the 1990s, with the event now acting as a significant fundraiser every year. “The Albury Home and School Association arranges marshals for the course – a challenge given the small size of the school roll,” Chris says. “The school also organises an after-race BBQ for riders, for additional fundraising.” Chris says approximately three quarters of the race is now completed through farm land. “There is a close association

There are plenty of farmers and businesses in the surrounding communities willing to help out as well – which is why the auction tends to be the financial backbone of the fundraising. Having only lived in the area for three years, Scott is overwhelmed by the community spirit. “It’s a real strong community here – and it’s blown me out of the water. Whenever there’s a do on, like the once a year we have a shearing event, everyone’s there,” he says. “We had a comment last year that we may not want to have the Sports Day every year but we did it again – you can’t fault it at all. And hopefully we can continue to, every November.” Like Alfredton School, Albury School in South Canterbury is a rural school that needs to think outside the box to get the extra things it needs. The Pass to Pub was conceived in the late 1980s (the exact year the first race was held depends on who you ask), with competitors making their way from Burke’s Pass to Albury. An effective stock water system keeps water flowing At this time of the year, water around the farm is in peak demand. When stock don’t get enough water, this can adversely affect production. Every farm has a slightly different stock water system - from water sources and reticulation methods to pipes, fittings and outlets.

Troughs should be adequate to meet demand, relative to stock type and numbers. In the case of a pumped supply to a reserve (tank) capacity, at least two day’s supply is recommended. Dairy cows require up to 70 litres of water per day. At peak times, troughs can quickly empty, causing frustrated cows to damage ball cocks and troughs. Correct installation and regular maintenance will extend the life of these very important farm infrastructure assets. Make sure you enlist the help of qualified professionals to keep your stock water system working effectively. A Real Kiwi Story

It was the 1950’s and Kiwis Bert and Dawn Hansen were building their house. Bert couldn’t find a reliable toilet valve, being an entrepreneur he invented one. This then lead Bert into developing a range of high performance Brass Foot and Check Valves. The design was patented and fast became the bench mark for industry standards and today the original design Bert created is used in a multitude of valves in hundreds of markets all around the world.

With the initial success of the Brass Foot and Check Valves, Bert and Dawn worked many long hours to keep up with supply. Their garage was the hub of their business with all the machining, assembling and packaging carried out there. In those early days, Dawn remembers having to pack up the car and take all the fittings down to the railway station for distribution. In the 1960s the range was expanded further, with Bert designing and manufacturing a range of Brass Quick Couplings. However by the early 70s An Original Bert and Dawn realised that Hansen plastic was the way of the Advertisment future and re-developed 1979 the existing range of Brass Quick Couplings and Brass Foot and Check Valves Bert’s in plastic. By the end of the 70s Bert Original and Dawn saw an opportunity to Toilet Valve add to their range and designed and 1952 manufactured a range of Nylon easy to use “Cold Fit Pipe Fittings”. Back then this completely changed the way Kiwi Farmers joined Alkathene pipe. “We had a few teething problems with the original cold fit range, mainly around the single barb being difficult to get past the hard pipe when it was cold and a 130kg farmer trying to tighten up a 25mm fitting with a 24” stillson on a -5 degree Southland winter’s Hansen day. Those were some fun Instore learning times but we got Display those problems sorted, we Unit should have labelled the 2009 fittings “Kiwi Proof”.

Hansen Easy Fit Pipe Fitting 2009

12 | THE FARMLANDER

In the mid 1980s some more enthusiasm and ideas were injected into the business when Carl Hansen (Bert and Dawn’s son) arrived from completing his engineering trades.

Within a short period of time, Carl’s experience in engineering and his desire to use the “right” technologies in manufacturing and materials added even more strength to the Hansen company. Bert and the team didn’t sit still for long and in the late 1980s it was decided Hansen would design and manufacture a range of True Fit Threaded Fittings. With the Hansen range of products growing rapidly, it was time to move out of the garage and into its own manufacturing plant to start injection moulding their products. This move was a huge investment and there were many sleepless nights in the Hansen households. The move proved to be the right decision and it wasn’t long before Hansen products were being demanded from all over the world. The 1990s saw the products develop a stronger following in New Zealand and Australia, with many of the original products having upgrades to high performance materials and the core ranges growing every year. “At one point it felt like we were adding fitting configurations every month”, recalls Carl Hansen. In 1999, it was time for Hansen Products to move into even bigger premises. A building in Union East Street, Whangarei was found and the building underwent huge changes to house the manufacturing plant. The turn of the millennium saw Hansen Products continue on the path of constant improvement - a sister company in Canada was established, Irripod was purchased, the Easy Fit range was updated and after much encouragement from the market, our Full Flow Ball Valve was released. It’s 2013 and Hansen Products is far from slowing down. Our in-house Research and Design team has developed several new products for release, Level Alert Heavy Duty Tank Level Indicator, the Leveller Tank/Reservoir Valve, Superflo Piston Valve and the Maxflo Diaphragm Valve. All of these products have been designed for high performance whilst still staying true to Bert’s original philosophy of “Keep it Simple”. At Hansen, we believe the Superflo and Maxflo valves will quickly become the next industry standard of High Performance Float Valves. After 60 years in business, Hansen Products is extremely proud to be a New Zealand owned and operated business. We are continuing to design, manufacture and distribute Pipe Fittings and Valves of the highest quality around the world. Hansen has built a reputation for providing high performance, easy to use, simple products that deliver our customers “Best Installed Value”. The winning formula that has been applied to the product range since the 1950s has ensured a loyal customer following through the generations. With a range of more than 1000 different products, loyal customers and a dedicated team, Hansen is poised for the new challenges ahead.

Twin Farm lambs make top weights on high sugar grass The combination of award winning sheep genetics and high sugar grass is enabling a Southland farm to maximise its earnings from lambs that can reach their target weight at 12 weeks. Twin Farm is a family owned and operated company and co-owner Andrew Welsh says breed improvement and pasture quality are vital to a farm system geared to rapid lamb growth. “A higher price for lambs would be a big help but on the farm it’s all about getting more animal production and trying to improve things,” says Andrew, who runs Twin Farm at Mandeville, near Gore, with his wife Katherine and his parents Russell and Pam Welsh. Earlier this year, the family’s achievements were recognised at the Beef + Lamb NZ Sheep Industry Awards, where Twin Farm won the SIL-ACE Dual Purpose for Growth (lamb growth and adult size) Award across all breeds, for their easy care TEFRom (Texel-East Friesian-Romney) flock. Twin Farm’s TEFRoms offer high fertility, a 35 micron fleece and excellent meat yield. “Basically the award recognises that our TEFRoms breed lambs that grow very quickly compared to the size of their mothers. That means we have efficient ewes rather than massive ones,” Andrew says.

He has up to 50 percent of their commercial lambs ready at weaning at 12 weeks to send to the works, where their carcase weights average 18kg. “Some of those lambs can pack on more than 500 grams a day at times on mum,” Andrew says. As well as commercial ewes, the Welsh family runs a TEFRom stud with more than 1,000 recorded ewes, plus 680 Suftex stud ewes on their 650 hectares on the Waimea Plains, where Andrew uses his ‘eye-o-meter’ each day to measure pasture and stock performance. There is clearly a strong grazing preference for AberMagic high sugar grass. “We had left the gates open across all the paddocks at tailing, including several young grass paddocks of other varieties and eventually we had to lock them out of the AberMagic because within three days most of the mob was in there. “They will eat the sugar grass to the bare ground if you let them.” Improved pasture is enabling the lambs to reach their genetic potential and while Andrew continues to trial different ryegrasses, he has so far planted 100 hectares in Aber high sugar grass (AberHSG). “The hoggets lambing on AberMagic this season looked phenomenal and their lambs were in great condition, despite a high stocking rate.” On AberHSG pasture, the twin-bearing hoggets can be set stocked at 16 per hectare, not counting the lambs, compared to 10 sheep per hectare on old ryegrass varieties.

| Twin Farm owners Russell and Andrew Welsh describe these five-year-old AberMagic paddocks as “like a new grass”.

A further incentive is that earlier lamb finishing allows breeding stock to be put

into prime pasture earlier, to build body condition ahead of winter. Andrew first tried AberDart, a perennial AberHSG, 10 years ago on the family’s previous sheep farm at Riverton, 110km south on the Invercargill coast. After moving to Mandeville five years ago, he wasted no time by choosing pasture renewal with AberMagic. Andrew says their first paddocks are growing a thick sward “like a new grass” and the AberHSG varieties have proven persistent. “They were the green paddocks when the farm was dry.” This spring, AberGreen - a new AberHSG perennial - was sown into 15 hectares as a trial while AberEcho, a new hybrid HSG, was blended with AberMagic for more grass growth in the cooler shoulder seasons. “So far I am rapt with the AberMagic. The stock love it and it holds its quality,” says Andrew. Farmlands Gore Technical Field Officer, Garth Shanks has been advising Twin Farm for five years and says the AberHSGs hold their quality well in dry conditions. “The sheep use less energy to digest this grass and it has a mass of fine, dense roots that allows it to reach more soil moisture and nutrients, which gives it persistence,” says Garth, who has observed AberHSG pasture on his own block, improving the condition of lambs within two or three weeks. Specialist drystock pasture put to the test in Hawke's Bay Rohan spreading perennial ryegrass (SPR) is the new solution to an old challenge for many farmers - namely, how to grow pastures with the yield and feed value of a perennial ryegrass, in conditions where normal ryegrass often doesn’t last well. Just as importantly, Graham Kerr says, it offers significant benefits in terms of feed quality, as it has consistently stayed short, green and leafy - as a result of being very well grazed - in comparison to a range of other cultivars it has been tested against. “The end result for sheep and beef farmers is a pasture that’s both persistent

Reaping the benefits of endoph yte IDENTIFY YOUR NEEDS FIRST Endophyte has a significant effect on the longevity of your new ryegrass pasture and the health of animals grazing it. So before you organise your autumn pasture seed, set aside some time to identify the right endophyte for your conditions. It won’t take long and it will make a big difference to your results. The most important thing to remember? No single endophyte does everything. These days you will have a choice of seven different endophytes when you order seed for new proprietary pasture. The ryegrass cultivar itself determines at least 50 percent of plant growth and persistence, so this remains a key deciding factor but picking the right endophyte for your system is equally important. Endophyte research is complex and fast-moving, because scientifically, this is still a relatively new area of investigation. New Zealand is a world leader in this field and new work is underway all the time, so it can be hard to keep up with the latest developments. The most important thing to remember is that each endophyte has its own unique characteristics, so of those available, you need to work out which will best deliver the requirements of your farm system.

Keep in mind, however, that there is no ‘silver bullet’ endophyte that does everything perfectly.

However, AR1 should not be sown in the northern North Island on soils affected by black beetle, to which it is susceptible. GrubOUT® U2 - the rock star endoph yte For those farmers whose pastures are severely affected by black field crickets, the news that the new endophyte GrubOUT® U2 protects host grasses from crickets will be strongly welcomed. The GrubOUT® U2 endophyte was launched last autumn by Cropmark Seeds and is available in the company’s ready-to-sow Barrier Combo™ permanent pasture mix. Cropmark’s National Sales Manager Callum Davidson says research conducted on behalf of the company has shown that crickets seem to be particularly sensitive to loline alkaloids produced by the GrubOUT® U2 endophyte contained in Barrier Combo™. “The research has clearly shown that crickets won’t eat grass containing lolines. There is a very strong feeding deterrence effect. This is a valuable trait for a pasture to have, given the fact that crickets can be a significant pasture pest in many parts of the country.” While black field crickets are found throughout the North Island and milder parts of the South Island, they are generally only of economical importance in northern areas of New Zealand – Northland especially. Damage to pastures can be significant, affecting establishing

seedlings and established pastures, resulting in reduced pasture production and even plant death. According to ‘Pestweb’, two crickets per square metre over one hectare will consume the equivalent of one sheep. In plague seasons, as many as 20-40 crickets/m² frequently occur and can cause losses of 30kg DM/ha/day. In dairy pasture, an average density of 25 crickets/ m² can be responsible for 2000kg DM/ha/ yr lost production. But it is not just crickets that are affected by the GrubOUT® U2 endophyte. It has already been reported that the GrubOUT® U2 endophyte, which is the only endophyte to operate above and below ground, protects host grasses from grass grub, black beetle adults and larvae, porina caterpillar and Argentine stem weevil.

it preferentially over other ryegrass/ endophyte combinations,” Callum says. For best establishment, the Barrier Combo™ pasture mix (which comes complete with medium and large leafed white clovers) should be shallow sown at

Realising the potential of subterranean clover Dr Phil Nichols, a world renowned breeder of subterranean clover was recently a guest speaker at discussion groups and farm visits throughout the country. A key objective of his trip was to help realise the potential of the species here. The Department of Food and Agriculture Western Australia (DAFWA) has set up a joint venture breeding initiative with Seed Force to breed new sub-clover varieties, with traits offering greater value to Australasian livestock producers. Subterranean clover is very beneficial to pastures in drier areas of New Zealand. As such, it is important that farmers understand the species and its benefits. Annual life cycle: Sub clover is an annual legume, which germinates in autumn and completes seed production in spring/early summer (timing depends on cultivar). Natural re-seeding: Sub clover regenerates naturally each year from seed set in previous years, without the need for re-sowing.

Easy-care grazing: Sub clover is very grazing tolerant, flowers close to the ground and buries its seed-containing burrs (sub and yanninicum types). Persistence over seasons: Sub clover is a reliable seed producer. Seeds germinate in the following autumn but some seeds remain dormant as ‘hard seeds’, which ‘soften’ over subsequent summers for germination. This results in natural reseeding even after poor seasons.

Improved soil fertility: Sub clover fixes nitrogen, for its own growth and supplies nitrogen to other grasses and herbs in the pasture. It also provides nitrogen in the soil for crops and other plants in following years.

persistence can be compromised. One of the most important attributes New Zealand is the flowering date (maturity). Due to our typically longer growing season compared with Australia, it means the earlier maturing varieties should largely be avoided for the majority of our areas. The late flowering types are best suited here. In very dry areas,

Typically, ssp. subterranean is adapted to well-drained, moderately acid (pHCa 4.5 - 6.5) soils. Most cultivars belong to this group. This type actively buries its burrs and is the type most commonly used.

Pasture pests such as Argentine stem

weevil (ASW), grass grub, black beetle and porina are the main culprits but others can be involved in compromising both the establishment and longevity of ryegrass within the pasture sward. An integrated pest management (IPM) strategy is the best way to manage the population of each of these pests - more information on pasture pests can be sourced at www.pestweb.co.nz. Risk of damage by pests increases through the season, as warming temperatures allow populations to build-up. Newly sown pasture that is direct drilled or summer/autumn sown tends to be particularly susceptible.

Superstrike provided protection against adult ASW but in other circumstances will help protect against adult black beetle populations of these pests are relatively low at sowing. Despite the ryegrass cultivar, it takes time after emergence for the endophyte to start producing alkaloids that protect the plant long term from ASW, so seed treatment offers short term protection to establishing seedlings. For seed treatment to be effective and to gain control of pests not covered by seed treatment, control of pest populations prior to sowing is often required by using appropriate insecticides and slug baits. It is best practice to take preventive action against pasture pests at the time of sowing, rather than having to take remedial

established but the impact during the establishment period by adult ASW is less understood. The current trial confirmed that across New Zealand, investing in both seed treatment and novel endophytes are important when making your pasture seed decision. Selection of what novel endophyte to use will be dependent on your risk from different pasture pests. If ASW and pasture mealy bug are the only pasture pests to consider in pasture, farmers are recommended to use ryegrass cultivars with AR1. However, if you want to ensure the highest level of protection for ryegrass, it is highly recommended to use AR37 novel endophyte. AR37 endophyte is a useful tool in an IPM strategy against a greater spectrum of pests than AR1, including adult black beetle, porina and root aphid.

Getting pasture off to a flying start As autumn approaches, it’s time to think about your pasture renewal programme. There are a number of elements to put in place to ensure your pasture establishes well and goes on to persist and perform at its optimum. Key steps include:

situation, you will need to soil test at least a month before sowing, before talking through the results with your Farmlands or Ballance representative. Typical base fertiliser product options include Pasturemag 5K, Pasturezeal G2 Balancer and Superten 10K.

• Preparing well in advance of sowing

Using a starter fertiliser will really give your new pasture the best chance of establishing well. Even if soil fertility is good, having phosphorus and nitrogen in close proximity to the developing seedling benefits the plant. The result can be seen as strong seedling establishment, which means the new pasture is better able to out-compete weeds. Starter fertiliser needs to be placed close to but not touching seeds (as you don’t want to risk seed burn). Two products that can be used as starter fertilisers are DAP (150-200kg/ ha) and Cropzeal 16N (250-350kg/ha).

• Soil testing to determine the current

levels of nutrients

• Using a starter fertiliser to promote

strong seedling growth

• Applying nitrogen to support plants

post emergence.

Many farmers struggle to establish pastures that last. However, with the right management, it is achievable. One of the keys to getting it right is planning ahead and ensuring any problems are remedied before new pasture goes in. Issues can include poor drainage or compaction, weeds and pests and poor fertility. If soil pH needs amending then you will need to add lime and give it time to work. This can take six months to a year, with the end goal of achieving a pH between 5.8 and 6.0. The table below gives an indication of the target levels of nutrients for different soil types. To work out

Nitrogen strategies for new pasture will be covered in the next issue of The Farmlander. For more information please talk to the friendly team at your local Farmlands store today. Article supplied by Ballance Agri-Nutrients.

Once pasture has emerged – usually three to four weeks after sowing – an application of nitrogen is normally required. This should be quite light, around 30-40kg N/ha. Supplying fertiliser nitrogen helps to promote ryegrass tillering and allows plants to compete against weeds, which means that pasture establishment is better in the long term.

Combination drenches to maximise productivity in young cattle What most farmers want is to rear good young stock with only the necessary drenches, vaccines and minerals added, which allow maximum growth with as little management as possible, while they concentrate on other productivity aspects of their business. In reality it is never this simple, with numerous challenges including parasites that are influenced by management, drenches, genetics and weather.

The fastest growing lamb is the most profitable. This is true for a number of reasons. The less time the lamb is on the farm, there is less risk of death, less animal health costs and more importantly, they can be sent off to the works sooner - putting money in your back pocket. A major factor that can slow lamb growth is the presence of parasites. Coop et al. (1982) demonstrated that lambs with no parasites grew approximately 50g more per day than lambs with a heavy infection. Using an effective drench will ensure growth potential is maximised. Managing kiwifruit sizing Many factors will influence the size of kiwifruit but the key to optimising size and minimising variability is to understand what can be controlled outside normal pruning practices.

Dormancy breakers, e.g. Hydrogen Cyanamid (“Cyan”), are used in spring to achieve a uniform bud break. Even bud break is key to reducing variation in size between the fruit and will further lift production levels, because fruit dominance is minimised. Of note is that G9 Gold growers generally don’t need to apply a dormancy breaker, as that variety sets high fruit numbers of evenly sized fruit.

Chemical applications of fruit sizing agents, such as Benefit Kiwi and Cropset, can also help set fruit but do not result in more seed production. Timing and correct rates are Farmlands Horticulture team. Fruit thinning should always be carried out as soon as required after pollination. The earlier this is done, the better the weight gain will be on fruit retained. During the growing season, foliar applications of seaweed (Orca, Acadian, or Agla600) will help reduce stress on vines and promote healthy leaf cover. Similarly, calcium products will aid cell growth and strength. These are just a few of the practices growers can invoke to manipulate fruit size. The benefits of compound feeds compared to straights Compound feeds can improve profitability and peace of mind by delivering nutrition in a convenient, available form. The term ‘compound feed’ could be used to describe any feed with two or more constituents. Often its use is confined to pelleted feed supplemented with minerals and additives to complement feeds already on the farm, relative to the class of stock being fed and their level of production - but it could also apply to loose blends. Straight feeds are a single feed source and can include grains (e.g. wheat, barley, triticale, maize, oats), pulses (beans and peas), byproducts (e.g. palm kernel expeller, broll, copra meal, molasses) and oilseeds (e.g. soya bean meal, canola meal, cottonseed meal and linseed meal). Straights are normally dry but some can be moist (e.g. brewer’s grains, potatoes). NUTRITION

Nutrition prior to tupping GET BETTER BODY CONDITION Nutrition prior to tupping is important to ensure ewes have good ovulation rates and conception rates at joining. Ewes with low body condition scores at tupping have the highest return to service, lower incidences of twinning or triplets and higher embryo mortality. Therefore, it is important to ensure that ewes are in good condition and are on the correct plane of nutrition leading up to and through tupping, to tighten the lambing period and maximise the next season's lamb crop.

Vitamins and minerals are included to improve both the health and production of the flock. These include vitamin E for ewe health, follicle quality, conception rates and to improve sperm quality for rams and vitamin A for improving ewe ovulation and embryonic development. FARMLANDS FUEL

TouchStar

PICKING UP STEAM

Farmlands Fuel’s new technology, TouchStar, is on track to keep us at the forefront of New Zealand fuel logistics.

TouchStar is a technology that allows drivers to have all records and details available to them at all times through the touch of a button. Once fully implemented, this will mean a more efficient service to shareholders. All delivery data is loaded into the system at the time of delivery, live and in real time. Scheduling of your delivery is now carried out by a logistics co-ordinator, in conjunction with driver input. This is done using specialist software and operating as part of a coordinated and highly skilled logistics team. All deliveries are electronically captured with the exact quantity delivered, recorded to the nearest one hundredth of a litre. Also detailed and recorded is the GPS location and the time of delivery. An electronic delivery docket is now printed and left to record the detail of the delivery. Farmlands Fuel, to keep up with the demands of modern fuel logistics, had to upgrade its systems for the better. TouchStar is a pioneering way of doing so.

Farmlands Co-operative Society Limited | Š February 2014. All rights reserved.

Prior to the implementation of TouchStar, our logistics system was very manual with all deliveries manually recorded, tallied and entered into our system. Continuing with this manual system was not sustainable for our business. TouchStar will reduce the need for manual systems, including a considerable amount of driver paperwork. To comply with health and safety legislation, our fuel drivers have a daily restriction on hours worked. This development will free our drivers up to deliver more fuel to you, our shareholders. Like any new technology, implementing TouchStar has had its issues. Yes, there have been teething problems, which are now mostly behind us. If you have been impacted by any of these, we do apologise and thank you for your patience. With TouchStar, Farmlands Fuel are now well placed to take our business into the future. FARMLANDS LIVESTOCK

High performance monitored weight gain heifer grazing Feedback from our dairy clients indicates most are prepared to pay for a good product and performance when it comes to heifer grazing. There is no question that well grown heifers will not only produce more but also stand a better chance at getting in calf early, during the crucial first lactation. The costs involved in producing a replacement heifer are too high to have her dropping out of the herd in the first year.

provide monthly reports and graphs to ensure live weight targets are met. Nearly every other form of income generated from the farm is weighed and paid for per KGs produced. We believe dairy grazing should be no different. Per head / per week grazing works fine in some cases but in many it fails, as it does little to differentiate poor performance from good performance. We can also give accurate guidance and advice to farmers looking at altering their farming practice to dairy heifer grazing. This includes a farm visit and a plan to provide the correct amount and type of feed required, for top performances, for all times of the year. Using the wider Farmlands business, we have all aspects of dairy grazing covered, from feed production and recommendations, to animal health products, as well as technology and equipment.

*Farmlands Livestock is South Island-only at present, however opportunities in the North Island are currently being explored.

FARMLANDS REAL ESTATE

REAL ESTATE PREPARATION We are currently preparing a number of residential, lifestyle and rural marketing campaigns. Thinking ahead and planning is vital if you are considering selling any property type. There’s an old saying but one that is very apt - you only get one chance to make a good first impression; presenting a tidy and appealing property helps your salesperson to maximise value for you our vendor. With property ownership a New Zealand national pasttime, residential and lifestyle vendors, when presenting their homes should consider the following as crucial to effect a great first impression. • Tidy the gardens and mow the lawns regularly. • Shampoo the carpets and remove pet odours. • Check your gutters. • Clean out the garage and shed. • De-clutter. • Spring clean each room so all are spic and span. Our farming vendors should also adhere to residential and lifestyle home and ground presentation.

Around the farm they should ensure; • Staff accommodation facilities should be clean and tidy. • Tidy implement, wool and dairy sheds. • Pick up old drench containers and baleage wrap. • Fix those leaking troughs and strain fences. • Ensure all gates swing. Consider viewing your property through the eyes of the purchaser. We all have jobs that we have been putting off doing for years. Contacting your salesperson well in advance to plan and prepare marketing and improvements in presentation will often lead to achieving better sales values. If you need advice please contact me. We are taking listings now for Southern Field Days Waimumu 12-14 February, 2014 and National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek 11-14 June 2014.

How can it be aggressive and still provide excellent mileage? Tyre toughness and traction has been taken to the MAXX

onstant improvement is a hallmark of Cooper Tires. Their latest leap forward is the new S/Tmaxx all-terrain tyre now 66% stronger in the sidewall and over 2.5 times more tear resistant than the old S/T. Tyre toughness and traction has been taken to the MAXX. Tested in Australia’s Outback The S/Tmaxx arrived after three years of testing over thousands of kilometres in some of the toughest

terrain Australia had to offer. This has resulted in a stronger tyre designed to thrive in New Zealand’s tough, unique conditions while still offering great onroad characteristics. Super Tensile Steel (NEW) Now with ‘Super Tensile Steel’ belts, 15% stronger than the usual ‘High Tensile Steel’ used in other tyres, resulting in higher impact strength and puncture resistance.

What is Armor-Tek3? In normal 2 or 3 ply tyres, each cord ply runs at the same 90° angle from the bead. This leaves exposed, a rubber gap between the sidewall cord. Foreign objects such as nails, stakes or even sharp outback grass push against the sidewall cord, deflect off and penetrate through the weakest point, the rubber.

Now with Armor-Tek3 Cooper’s proven class-leading 3-ply Armor-Tek3 carcass construction contributes massively to the durability of the new S/Tmaxx. First by adding 66% strength to the sidewall and secondly by using the patented 8 degree angled ply this adds over 2.5 times more tear resistance compared to the old S/T. Cooper Tires are only available from Authorised Cooper Tire Dealers.
