WINNER BEST USE OF GLASS

BROOKFIELD MULTIPLEX CONSTRUCTIONS PTY LTD PROJECT NAME

50 MARTIN PLACE REDEVELOPMENT, SYDNEY

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

Restoration of this heritage building included the addition of two occupiable floors at the top of the building within a two-storey, steel-framed, glass roof dome and the installation of two unique glass shuttle lifts from the ground floor banking chamber to levels 10 and 11. The glass roof dome as installed was a triple-laminated glass with an aluminum mesh installed between layers one and two of each glazing panel. The dome roof consisted of more than 1000 panels, each individually installed by tower crane. This glazing created significant benefits from an ESD and thermal comfort perspective as the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient was as low as 0.18 for the meeting room glass. Two custom-made all glass circular elevators were designed to suit the existing heritage interior by concealing the elevator machinery and components. Each lift car was pre-assembled in Switzerland and transported to Australia as a single unit. The design development, manufacture and installation of this glazing and use of glass to an exceptionally high standard achieved by Brookfield Multiplex Constructions make this building a worthy winner of the Best Use of Glass award.

HANSEN YUNCKEN PTY LTD PROJECT NAME

ANSTO ELECTRON MICROSCOPE FACILITY, LUCAS HEIGHTS

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

The EMF building is a very unique-shaped structure incorporating three highly sensitive technical laboratories. One of the main challenges was to minimise the use of ferrous metals within this building. The building structure has been designed and built incorporating very large laminated timber portal frames, timber beams, timber wall framing, timber roof trusses and doubled-glazed timber window frames, all fabricated using timber dowel connections. The whole of the external façades of the building are covered with vertical teak timber panelling, with joints staggered throughout the elevations to give a natural feel. The finished building presents a very distinctive appearance, and the concealed detailing and execution of the exposed timber works is a credit to all the skilled tradesmen involved in fabricating and constructing this unique timber-framed and -cladded building.
