Crow's Theatre 2025.26 Season Brochure

Page 1

SEASON!

At Crow’s Theatre, we believe theatre is a space where the world is not only reflected, but reimagined a place where laughter, resilience, and unexpected joy shine through, even in the face of adversity.

This season, we invite you to experience a collection of plays that pulse with life: stories of reinvention, of individuals who refuse to accept the world as it has been handed to them, and who dare to imagine something better.

Across the 2025.26 season, we also turn our attention to the quiet power of communities — to the ways people come together, reimagine what’s possible, and transform daily life through acts of care, friendship, and unexpected courage.

Whether a courtroom, migrant workers’ camp, corporate boardroom, or mythical world, these stories reveal how we find belonging, forge connection, and reshape the stories we tell.

This spirit of collaboration extends beyond the themes of the season into how these works are produced. Crow’s Theatre continues to deepen partnerships with theatre companies from across the city, including a game-changing three-year strategic collaboration with Soulpepper Theatre. Together, we are expanding audiences access to daring, homegrown productions, fostering new works, and investing in the next generation of theatre artists. In this, its first year, the initiative enables both companies to produce 24 productions, co-develop new projects, and

2

support independent companies. By joining forces, we’re reaching more audiences and strengthening Toronto’s theatre ecosystem. This year, Crow’s and Soulpepper subscribers will enjoy unprecedented benefits, with streamlined access to both seasons for a richer, more connected patron experience.

At its heart, theatre is a communal act. It thrives on collaboration—between playwrights and actors, companies and audiences, and the stories unfolding before them. Many of this season’s productions emphasize transformation—whether personal, societal, or artistic— these are rarely achieved alone. This season challenges us to see the world differently, to embrace change, and to imagine new possibilities together.

We look forward to seeing you at the theatre.

The Welkin

Directed by Weyni Mengesha

The Welkin

Rural England, 1759. Halley’s Comet burns in the sky, and a young woman is sentenced to hang. But when she tries to escape the noose by claiming to be pregnant, a jury of twelve women is gathered to decide whether she is telling the truth. As tensions rise, their task becomes a reckoning: with the law, with power, and with the roles they’re forced to play in a world that silences them.

Tony Award nominee Lucy Kirkwood’s The Welkin (Chimerica, The Children) is a bold and blistering courtroom drama—by turns darkly comic and quietly devastating—about justice, duty, and righteous dissent.

CRITIC ’S PICK

The New York Times

“THE WELKIN IS ALL MUSCLE—TAUT AND INTENSE, ENERGIZED NOT ONLY BY ITS MORAL INDIGNATION BUT BY ITS SENSE OF HUMOR, AND BY THE SPECIFIC HUMANITY OF EACH OF ITS LARGE CAST OF CHARACTERS.”

From three-time Tony Award nominee Dave Malloy (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, Ghost Quartet) comes his latest off-Broadway sensation, Octet directed by Chris Abraham.

In a tech-obsessed support group, eight Internet addicts grapple with everything from doomscrolling to Candy Crush to conspiracy theories.

Blending razor-sharp contemporary critique with haunting choral harmonies, Octet offers a hilarious, intimate, and deeply moving exploration of human connection in the digital age.

“OCTET ONCE AGAIN REVEALS DAVE MALLOY TO BE ONE OF THE MOST CREATIVELY AUDACIOUS TALENTS WORKING IN MUSICAL THEATER TODAY.”

The Veil

The Veil

Our darkest secrets hide just behind the veil.

Governor General’s Literary Award nominee Keith Barker (This Is How We Got Here) and awardwinning theatre creator Thomas Morgan Jones (Artistic Director, National Theatre School of Canada) bring a haunting new work, inspired by the eerie imagery of classic horror, to Crow’s Theatre.

When a high-powered lawyer inherits a sinister curse, every terrible deed he’s ever committed stirs to life— lurking just beyond his sight. Driven by his relentless ambition, he must confront a terrifying truth: sometimes, the deadliest adversary is the one we’ve created within ourselves.

As reality blurs into nightmare, The Veil spirals into a pulse-quickening race against time, exposing the guilty and inescapable ghosts of our past.

“BARKER’S WORK BRIMS WITH HUMANITY AND RAW EMOTIONAL POWER… A VIVID, NECESSARY VOICE ON THE CANADIAN STAGE.”

The Christmas Market

A Crow’s Theatre commission from Dora Mavor Moore Award–winning playwright Kanika Ambrose (our place, Truth), The Christmas Market is a radical and deeply felt new play set against the shimmering bustle of a snowy holiday market.

Far from home, three Caribbean migrant workers carve out a sense of belonging in an unfamiliar and often unforgiving landscape. In the quiet moments between shifts, they discover unexpected friendship forging unshakeable bonds through their humour, grit, and shared determination to survive their first Canadian winter.

Razor-sharp, funny, and unflinching, The Christmas Market is a powerful exploration of community resilience and the hope created by found family.

From the creators behind the Dora Award–winning Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, this brandnew musical by the acclaimed Bad Hats Theatre reimagines one of literature’s most beloved stories.

In a snowy world held captive by a powerful witch, four children Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter tumble through an ordinary wardrobe and discover that imagination, loyalty, and courage can defy even the most fearsome of foes.

A magical experience for both the young and the young at heart, Narnia upholds the Bad Hats’ tradition of inventive and uplifting original musical theatre reminding us all that adventure lies anywhere we dare to look beyond the everyday.

Telecom tycoon Ted Rogers built an empire turning Canada’s airwaves into cash. Now his son Edward, long dismissed by his father, is fighting for control of the family business. Meanwhile, shrewd public servant Matthew Boswell is determined to derail Rogers’ billion-dollar takeover of Shaw Communications.

From award-winning playwright Micheal Healey (The Master Plan, The Drawer Boy) comes a modernday David and Goliath story of outsized ambition, personal grudges, and corporate power.

Inspired by one of the most dramatic boardroom showdowns in Canadian history, this riveting new drama examines the price of pushing back, the unraveling bonds of kin, and the legacy that money can and cannot buy.

Enter the spellbinding world of Pu Songling, the visionary writer whose tales of the supernatural have captivated audiences for centuries. Now, in a striking new adaptation, internationally celebrated Theatre Smith-Gilmour (Metamorphoses 2023) brings these timeless fables to life.

By turns whimsical and spine-tingling, this dynamic production captures the spirit of a literary master whose work touches on timeless themes that bind us across generations.

One of Canada’s most enduring theatre companies, Theatre Smith-Gilmour has long been a touchstone for daring and essential storytelling. Pu Songling: Strange Tales reaffirms their reputation for fearless, boundary-pushing work where theatricality reigns and the extraordinary occurs in every moment.

“TRUTH AND ILLUSION ARE WOVEN TOGETHER AND WHO CAN SAY WHICH IS WHICH.”

Pu Songling, Liozhai Zhiyi (Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio)

Summer and Smoke

Directed by Paolo Santalucia

A Crow’s Theatre and Soulpepper Theatre Co-production in Association with Birdland Theatre

Summer and Smoke

In a small town in the heat of summer under the wings of an angel Alma Winemiller, minister’s daughter, meets John Buchanan, the reckless and intoxicating doctor next door.

As summer deepens and their longing for one another intensifies — desire, duty, and convention collide, dangerously blurring the line between passion and ruin.

Blistering, poetic, and rapturous, this rarely-staged 20th-century masterpiece is Tennessee Williams at his most heart-rending.

The Surrogate

From award-winning author Mohsin Zaidi (A Dutiful Boy) comes a gripping debut drama that explodes the notions of contemporary parenthood.

Jake and Sameer have spent years preparing for this moment the birth of their first child.

But when Marya, their surrogate, is admitted to the hospital with complications, legal, ethical, and personal battles force the couple to confront questions they never expected: Who gets to decide what makes a family? And at what cost?

Set over the course of a single sleepless night, The Surrogate is a 21st-century exploration of privilege and the complexities of modern family-making in a world where the rules are still being written.

“ZAIDI’S ACCOUNT IS RAW, HONEST AND AT TIMES PAINFUL TO READ. IT’S SO VIVID, IT FEELS ALMOST TANGIBLE, AS THOUGH YOU’RE LIVING THE EXPERIENCES OF THE AUTHOR HIMSELF.”

Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary

Directed by Ellen

A Crow’s Theatre Production

Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary

Four women emerge from the desert, each bearing the same name: Mary, Mary, Mary, and Mary. As history folds in on itself, they raise their voices in a story of faith, sacrifice, and rebellion.

Blending ancient scripture with her trademark incisive, contemporary wit, Erin Shields (Here We Are, Paradise Lost, If We Were Birds) reclaims the stories of four women who stood at the gates of revolution only to be sidelined by history.

A visceral and lyrical reimagining of the gospels’ most enduring icons, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary interrogates what happens when four women who bore witness to miracles are finally allowed to speak.

“THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS TO ADMIRE ABOUT SHIELD’S ACUTE OBSERVATIONS AND INVERSIONS OF EXPECTATION… EVERY NEW PLAY FROM HER IS A CHALLENGE AND A TREAT.”

The Division

Project: Humanity and Pyretic Productions in Association with Crow’s Theatre

The Division

After publishing a eulogy for his renowned watchmaker grandfather in a national newspaper, Andrew is confronted by an accusation in the comments section. The charge sends him on a 19,000kilometre journey through Ukraine and Europe with daunting questions and the rare timepiece he's inherited. Retracing his grandfather’s footsteps as a soldier and immigrant, he unearths a family mythology that has astonishing implications for the present.

In a landscape where history is both weapon and wound, Andrew’s search pulls him deep into the stories of a shrinking Ukrainian village, into the fallout of Russia’s full-scale invasion, and into the silence of the dead.

Originally featured at Lincoln Center, NYC, The Division is a gripping new work on identity, legacy, and the slyness of memory. With his acclaimed blend of documentary theatre and deeply personal storytelling, Kushnir faces the unspoken truths that shape both our individual and collective histories and our here and now.

“[KUSHNIR] HAS EMERGED AS ONE OF ONTARIO’S TOP DIRECTORS.”

Primary Trust

For years, Kenneth has found solace in the mundane routine of his daily life—days spent working at a local bookshop, evenings spent nursing a single mai tai at his favorite bar.

But when the shop closes and he suddenly finds himself without a job, his carefully ordered world is upended. With nothing left to anchor him, Kenneth must step beyond the quiet life he’s built and confront the fears, dreams, and unspoken grief that have kept him at a standstill.

With warmth and delicate humor, Eboni Booth (Paris at the Atlantic Theater Company) crafts an affirming and tender portrait of a man standing at the brink of profound change.

Winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Primary Trust is a poignant meditation on connection and the courage it takes to transform your life.
