Our last parish event with Fr. Paul is the upcoming SayHey5K race around downtown Chaska, Saturday June 25, 10:15 a.m., at City Hall. (Immediately following Fr. Conran’s 60th ordination anniversary at 9 a.m. in our church. Fr. Conran will start the race.) Fr. Paul has had the privilege, he says, of walking with all of us at G.A. for 4 years. And this new 5K race, sponsored by Guardian Angels and businesses around downtown Chaska, is our chance to walk with Fr. Paul around the community he’s come to deeply love. “The Christian life is a journey in which we get to know each other, bring out the best in each other, and support each other. Moving ever deeper into the Kingdom of God,” says our outgoing pastor. “I look forward to having lasting memories of parishioners and Carver County community members journeying, walking, strolling, rolling, jogging or running around our beautiful ‘Chaska by the River’. For me, it’s symbolic of my four years in this community.” Fr. Paul doesn’t know if he’ll be wearing angel wings. “Maybe our new pastor, Fr. Doug, will be there … I’ll let him try them on.” So if you can run, if you can jog, if you can walk, if you can stroll, if you can roll (one parishioner plans to come in her handicap scooter) … then register for the SayHey5K at www.tiny.cc/ sayhey5k. Questions? Call the office, 952-227-4000, or email info@sayhey5k.com. Plenty of registration forms are around our campus. Don’t forget to encourage your friends around Carver County to do so as well. This is one way we can all say “Thank you!” to Fr. Paul, a true son of Chaska and Carver County.

“Mauer Traded to Cubs, Will Play First Base” See, we finance folks can have a little fun too!

Finance Committee – Progress Report (from meeting on 04/20) • Balanced Budget was recommended for Parish Council Approval (lots of work, hard decisions, a long time coming, but necessary for immediate and growth of parish/school) • Top 10 List was approved for next steps. In response to need and feedback from past and current contributors, many people want to give gifts that are tangible. (targeting 05/15 to publish a list of tangible parish/school needs) • Other Discussions (alternative revenue stream opportunities, capital campaign update, new priest assignment update, SayHey5K launch/marketing, school marketing) • Members Needed: We seek parishioners with experience in Accounting, Finance or Business. If you or someone you know has this gift/passion/ interest, please pass these names along. We will be in contact within one week of getting names. YOUR church, YOUR finance council – Jon Baker, Mike Richelsen, Jenna Forner, Travis Olson, Matthew Udermann. (Also present; Jerry Roth, Jennifer Salwei, Joe Bretz, Tom and Martha Bolke, Mark Sanda)

Please submit any questions/comments/insights to matt@sayhey5k.com. Our next meeting planned for Thursday, May 19th, 6 - 8 p.m.

Anointing… 1st weekend of the month following each Mass. For other requests, please contact the office. Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at our Eucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who are unable to be with us because of ill health. We remember them in our prayer, and we wish to include them in our Holy Communion. Members of our community bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unite them with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Please call the parish office at 952-227-4000 to let us know if you or a member of your family would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. That way we can schedule a time for our ministers to visit and bring the Sacrament.

VBS registration continues to grow! Be sure to sign your child up so that we meet our capacity. Visit the link at www.gachaska.org We still need teen volunteers to help with the groups. All volunteers must register online as well. Call Ms. Emily Klinker 227-4007 with any questions. Guardian Angels Church has been a place of worship for more than 150 years. During all those years faithful members of the parish have given of their time and talents to support the work of faith formation. We all have different abilities, skills, and gifts. Some we use to earn a living, others for recreation or relaxation. We may even have gifts we’ve yet to discover. There are many ways you can support Guardian Angels Faith Formation. How will you use what gifts God has given you to do Christ’s work in this church? Guardian Angels Church belongs to us all and we all need to play a part – however big or small. We are currently looking for Catechists, Assistants, Hall Monitors, RCIA team members, Children’s Liturgy leaders, Adult bible study leaders, and Sunday School leaders for next year. Please consider volunteering for our programs. Remember you DO NOT have to have a child in the program to share your gifts. If you think you can help in any way, please call Ms. Emily Klinker 227-4007.

With praise and thanksgiving to Almighty God, Guardian Angels Parish invites you to attend a celebration of 60 years of ordination for Father Conran Schneider, OFM Saturday, June 25, 2011 Holy Mass at 9 a.m. Guardian Angels Church 218 West Second Street Chaska, Minnesota Reception to follow Mass in St. Francis Hall

Loyola Spirituality Center will host a one day retreat on Friday, June 24th from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Edina. We live in a world that urges us to admire and pursue whatever is faster, newer, bigger. But here’s the deal: a life based on urgency, speed and productivity demands a high price. Have you ever felt overwhelmed, only to add one more thing to your to-do list? Have you every wished for an extra day in your week, or an extra hour in your day? Have you ever thought you’d like to develop your prayer life, but couldn’t find the time? This retreat is not about time management. It’s about letting our souls catch up with our bodies. Terry Hershey, author, humorist, and inspirational speaker will teach us how to pause! To register visit www.loyolaspiritualitycenter.org or call 651.641.0008. For more information, call Jean Rief in the parish office at 952-227-4095.

Easter Season Get out the Bible! Remember that imagination exercise a few weeks back, in which I asked you to imagine a foreign exchange student hosted in your home who was writing home her conclusions about Christianity based on observing your behavior? Remember the other week’s homework in which you were asked when the last time you invited someone to Mass with you? And if you’ve talked about the Faith, your faith with anyone? Did you find yourself a little lost for words? It’s important that every Christian adult know what the basic proclamation or kerygma of Christ and His disciples is. ~ Fr. Paul Kerygma (!"#$%µ&) is the Greek word used in the New Testament for preaching (see Luke 4:18-19, Romans 10:14, Matthew 3:1). It is related to the Greek verb to cry or proclaim as a herald, and means proclamation, announcement, or preaching. The New Testament teaches that as Jesus launched his public ministry, He entered the synagogue and read from the scroll of Isaiah the prophet. He identified himself as the one Isaiah predicted in Isaiah 61 (Luke 4:17-21). 17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, 18 "THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, 19 TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD." 20 And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." The Gospel scripture of fulfilled prophesy is a programmatic statement of Jesus' ministry to preach or proclaim (kerygma) good news of healing and liberation to the poor and the blind and the captive. Of the in-breaking of God’s realm into the world. This liberation through Christ allows us to live in God’s realm. And His three years of teaching after His initial proclamation in Nazareth’s synagogue – of which His healing attested to His unconventional teaching’s divine authority – are the manual for living the liberated, heavenly life here and now … and more fully in the here-after. His liberating teaching can be summarized in the Beatitudes are really “ How to be attitudes. ”

Homework

How to be with God. How to be with others. How to be with yourself. How to be in the world. How to be! They instruct those with eyes to see and ears to hear how to live in a state of heaven or self-transcending, self-expanding communion with others (including God) through Loving God and loving others as yourself. • “Love” being understood less in affectionate terms and more as active care and respect. • “Others” being understood as including even “them” … whoever “they” are for you.! Including enemies.! It’s not possible to have affection for one’s enemies, but it still possible and necessary to respect them, and care for their well-being. • Just as the three-legged stool is the most stable of chairs, the three Loving aims – towards God, others and self – are necessary for a stable and liberated, fulfilling life.! A heavenly life. This liberating way – called “The Way” and now called Christianity – moves one from the darkness and delusion of fear … the selfishness or self-withdrawal resulting from fear … leading to sinful or warped use of our God-given gifts. This liberation does not come out of the blue. It is a fulfillment of ancient prophesy. It is the culmination of divine, liberating revelation to the world through Israelite history, written in Israelite Torah … the ancient sacred library or collection of scrolls in the Temple of Jerusalem. We call these writings the Old Testament. Better translated as the Venerable or Ancient Covenant. (“Old”, in the English language, has the sense of being surpassed or broken and passé. Which is a misunderstanding.) And so this kerygma or proclamation of the Kingdom of Heaven’s arrival through the long-awaited Messiah is in the context of centuries of revelation through the People of God. If your imaginary foreign exchange student asks to verify his or her observations and conclusions about Christianity, or “The Way,” here are some important points to remember. Your Easter Season Homework is to look up the scriptural citations … at least one citation with each kerygmatic point. 1. The promises of God made in the Old Testament have now been fulfilled with the coming of Jesus the Messiah (Book of Acts 2:30; 3:19, 24, 10:43; 26:6-7, 22; Romans 1:2-4; 1 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 1:1-2; 1 Peter 1:10-12; 2 Peter 1:18-19). 2. Jesus was anointed by God at his baptism as Messiah (Acts 10:38). 3. Jesus began his ministry in Galilee after his baptism (Acts 10:37). Continued on next page...

Continued from Previous Page...

4. He conducted a beneficent ministry, doing good and performing mighty works by the power of God (Mark 10:45; Acts 2:22; 10:38). 5. The Messiah was crucified according to the purpose of God (Mark 10:45; John 3:16; Acts 2:23; 3:13-15, 18; 4:11; 10:39; 26:23; Romans 8:34; 1 Corinthians 1:17-18; 15:3; Galatians 1:4; Hebrews 1:3; 1Peter 1:2, 19; 3:18; 1 John 4:10). 6. He was raised from the dead and appeared to his disciples (Acts 2:24, 31-32; 3:15, 26; 10:40-41; 17:31; 26:23; Romans 8:34; 10:9; 1Co 15:4-7, 12à; 1 Thessalonians 1:10; 1Timothy 3:16; 1 Peter 1:2, 21; 3:18, 21). 7. Jesus was exalted by God and given the name "Lord" (Acts 2:25-29, 33-36; 3:13; 10:36; Romans 8:34; 10:9; 1Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 1:3; 1 Peter 3:22). 8. He gave the Holy Spirit to form the new community of God and God's children (Acts 1:8; 2:14-18, 33, 38-39; 10:44-47; 1 Peter 1:12). 9. He will come again for judgment and the restoration of all things (Acts 3:20-21; 10:42; 17:31; 1 Colossians 15:20-28; 1Thessalonians 1:10). 10. All who hear the message should repent and be baptized into the new life (Acts 2:21, 38; 3:19; 10:43, 47-48; 17:30; 26:20; Romans 1:17; 10:9; 1 Peter 3:21).

Q0;,$:*KEB$.R#($/#D*=(, Our 1904 baptismal font is back at the entrance of our church building, as a powerful symbol of how we enter the Church. In days of old, the baptismal font would actually be in its own building outside the church’s entrance. After a baptism, a big procession of newly baptized and faithful would process from the baptistery building into the church. This is why Catholic Christian churches should have their baptismal font at the entrance. Not in the sanctuary, which is designated for the ambo or pulpit, and also the altar. Received in March 2008 as a gift from Sharon and Bruce Perkins commemorating the 150th anniversary of our parish, the baptismal font makes a visual and symbolic connection between font and altar, Baptism and Eucharist. Our altar, like every church’s altar, is a powerful symbol of the New Jerusalem, of the heavenly realm breaking into our world. Heaven, for Christians, is both a here-and-now and a here-after reality. The center aisle defined by the baptismal font and the altar represents our spiritual journey in life: towards the Kingdom of Heaven, and ever deeper into God’s realm. The procession at the beginning of Mass is highly symbolic of all our journeys towards and deeper into Heaven. Wedding processions and funeral processions and First Communion processions all re-trace our life’s journey. Down that aisle. Sometimes, we fall off the path, back into delusion and darkness and the fear, selfishness and sin that result. This is why the Sacrament of Reconciliation is seen as getting us back on the path … back into the aisle’s journey. It took a lot of work by Bruce and Sharon to repair the altar font after 3+ years of use at G.A. And sometimes manhandling. I know I’ve been guilty of moving it around a lot. We all have to keep in mind that it is a valuable antique, like most of our beautiful furnishings and artwork in our church. This is why parishioners will see the font surrounded by flowers/plants and moved only rarely, and when absolutely necessary. We ask parishioners getting married for their understanding as we leave it in the center of the aisle for wedding processions. Grooms, groomsmen, brides and bridesmaids are asked to reflect on how their sacrament of marriage really fits in with their spiritual journey from baptism to eucharist, from font to altar, ever closer and deeper into the Kingdom. One of the few times we’ll move the font is baptisms during Mass and for caskets processed during a funeral. Cremain urns will not need the font moved. The baptismal font was originally in a small historic church in southwestern Iowa. It became available when the church was slated for dismantling. Doesn’t it look like it was made specifically for Guardian Angels Church?

Congratulations, Fr. Paul, on your 7th Anniversary of Priesthood. God’s blessings on you and thank you for all you do in the service of God!

And St. Mark’s (Shakopee) remain basketball tournament champions, three years straight. On Friday-Sunday, April 29, as part of Guardian Angels Church and School’s invitational basketball tournament, seminarians from St. John Vianney Seminary defeated the seminarians of The St. Paul Seminary. And then SJV seminarians defeated the a team of priests from the Archdiocese. The gym was packed with parishioners from all around the Twin Cities metro. Bishop Lee Piché joined the gathering. Parish teams from the southwest metro played in the tournament on April 30 and May 1. Congratulations to St. Mark Parish (Shakopee) for coming in first place and St. John (Excelsior) for coming in second place.

Folks are Talking about You About the most truthful thing I’ve ever written, I believe, was for the Sept. 5, 2010 bulletin (reprinted below). As we prepare for a pastor who will take G.A. parishioners to the next level of success, it’s worth re-reading I think. When folks I talk to around the Archdiocese compliment G.A. on being one of the most dynamic and engaged archdiocesan parishes, they’re talking about you. Don’t let it go to your head. But Fr. Doug is justified in feeling privileged in being able to join Guardian Angels. You should also be proud knowing that only the finest would attract the finest. Fr. Doug could’ve gone anywhere in his next assignment, but he chose YOU. ~ Fr. Paul

SURE! The smartest thing I’ve ever said as a pastor has been that single word. • When parishioners and their parish council came to me saying they’d like to have a Sunday evening Mass, I said “Sure!” • When the Friends of the Friary wanted to bring to AngelFest the Heritage Edition of the world-famous St. John’s Bible, I said “Sure!” • When Tom Redman, Kathy Skinner and others wanted to collaborate with G.A. in creating programs and events involving G.A. elders, I said “Sure!” • When Nick VanDenBroeke and Mike Richelsen wanted to bring basketball back to G.A. in a big way through an annual invitational G.A. tournament, I said “Sure!” • When Emily Klinker wanted to introduce RCIA, Children’s Liturgy of the Word, Youth Ministry, Lenten Friday presentations, and Bible study to G.A. a couple years back, I said “Sure!” • When Jean Rief wanted to bring “Befrienders” ministry, prison visit ministry, and Strengths/Giftedness Discernment, grief ministry, and Separated & Divorced support ministry, I said “Sure!” • When Eric Crowell wanted to take our parish bulletin, and other communications like our Time and Talent brochure, to the next level, I said “Sure!” • When Steve Kingsbury suggested we create a buildings and grounds inventory of our campus and get professional assessment of our historic structure’s long-deferred maintenance, I said “Sure!” • When Brian Winfield, our part-time maintenance guru for G.A., recommended purchasing snow removal equipment that he could operate during the winter and save us tons of money, I said “Sure!” • When Randy Symanitz, our former liturgist, wanted to create a Blessing of the Animals service around St. Francis’s feast day, I said “Sure!” • When Virginia Koehn wanted to promote college summer camps among our Latino youth (so that college would become an expectation of theirs), I said “Sure!” • When Clayton Forner, Ryan Dahl, Ben VanDenBroeke and others wanted to strip the old linoleum off the Old Friary’s beautiful wood floors, I said “Sure!” • When Clarence and Dorothy Kelzer wanted to donate $20,000 to our school’s operations and tuition assistance fund, I said “Sure!”

• When our parish council president, Tim Collins, wanted to bring a delegation of staff and parishioners to a leadership development seminar, I said “Sure!” • When Tina Healy, Sally Bergum, and Joanne Mallon wanted to incorporate our school community into our AngelFest parish festival, using the event to showcase our growing community, I said “Sure!” • When Jerry Roth, our parish director, wanted to gather together parish staff (both teaching and office staff) to develop leadership and collaborative skills, I said “Sure! • When Sandy Montague wanted to organize our new volunteer receptionist ministry several years back, I said “Sure!” • When other area parish schools wanted to discuss areas of collaboration, I said “Sure!” • When Teresa Fahey and Barb Villano expressed a desire for a devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, I said “Sure!” • When Jenna Rief suggested a Brick Donation campaign to begin preliminary/emergency repair work on our campus, I said “Sure!” I realize that I may be making it seem that all I do is say “Sure!” Rest assured, that “Sure!” is usually the beginning of lots of conversation and planning, and probably a referral to a relevant committee or council or staff member within the G.A. Family. I almost always say, “Now, how can you help make it happen?” Sometimes I have to say “No” – probably because the idea is obviously inconsistent with the overall Mission of Jesus Christ, or we’re not at a stewardship level where we can support it. More often than saying “No” I say “Not yet.” My point here is that even though the guy with the collar may get the attention, all the good happening here comes as a result of parishioner ideas and energy – inspired by the Holy Spirit and guided by parish leadership, of which I am a part. To prove my point, a school parent, Tracy Huson, approached me in the summer asking if she could get some parents, alumni and parishioners together to do a total makeover of our parish school … which is also where we have faith formation. Keep in mind she, others and I had been researching all sorts HGTV cable TV programs that would do a total makeover of our south campus for us. And for free. Finding none, she figured she would get the ball rolling with a home-made “Extreme Makeover” of our south campus. And find the donated material. I can’t tell you how many man-hours went into the makeover. But you can clearly see the results from all the into-the-wee-hours volunteer work when go on a tour of the classy new facility. And you definitely should go on a tour. Bring your friends with you. Let alumni know about it … after all, it is still their school. I can say that I am absolutely inspired by what many hands and hearts and minds can accomplish. Not just in the makeover, but in everything this parish is accomplishing as parishioner initiatives. If I get any credit at all as pastor, it is that I am smart enough to know to say “Sure!” ~ Fr. Paul
