Your news round-up for the month of October Feeling Blue
Unfortunately, however, the future is not looking so blue. According to Duan Yusen, chief forecaster of the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Centre, more pollution is expected with the approach of autumn and winter, which usually brings poor diffusion conditions and pollutants transferred to Shanghai from other provinces. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.
We all came across the hashtag G20blue at some point last month, and it seems that we weren’t just imagining things – the city actually enjoyed its best air quality for five years. The key factors of this were supposedly the moderate climate and a good distribution of air, according to the Shanghai Environmental Protection Centre. The environmental authority reported that 93.5 per cent of the days in August had an air quality rated as excellent or good, with the Air Quality Index no higher than 100. Unbelievably, only two days were reported as being slightly polluted, and that was primarily due to hot weather.

Climbing The Rankings
Shanghai has just laid claim to more bragging rights, with the city’s Fudan University breaking into the top 50 of the QS World University Rankings for the first time. Fudan University placed at number 43, up eight places from last year, and well ahead of local rival, Jiao Tong University, which came in at 61, up from 70 in 2015. The QS World University Rankings annually provides an index of the world’s leading higher education institutions, based on assessment of university performance in research, teaching, employability and internationalisation. Great news for the city’s youngsters!
Michelin Mayhem The inaugural Michelin Guide Shanghai was released last month. Eighteen of the city’s restaurants received one star, seven received two stars and only one was awarded three stars. T’ang Court, at the Langham Shanghai, Xintiandi, received the highest accolade, being named, “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey”. Controversy surrounded the announcement, however, as many in the Shanghai food and beverage industry claimed that the judges had a French and Cantonese bias, didn’t know the Shanghai restaurant scene well enough and did not award stars to some of the city’s stalwart restaurants, such as Jean Gorges and Franck. Many were also shocked that Paul Pairet’s Ultraviolet only clinched two stars. Since the announcement, one star winner, Taian Table, has been forced to cease operations, for the meantime at least, due to the discovery that their licence was not in order.
Most Alternative Investments Should Be Avoided Working in investment management in Asia, we get asked all the time about investment strategies by our friends. Often, the question these days is about alternative investments, since many people are looking for something else besides their stock portfolio. Our advice is, “just don’t do it”!
of investment programmes are borderline fraudulent, if not a complete scam. Sometimes, it is difficult to tell the difference between the frauds and merely incompetence, but is that truly a useful distinction?
e realise this simple announcement might need some explaining, since the case for an investment that doesn’t follow the stock market can seem like a good idea. We consider alternative investments to be a category of real assets outside the world of funds and direct stocks. Things such as wine, stamps, precious metals, diamonds, forestry plantations, art and collectibles are all alternative in our view. Our negative advice puts us at odds with quite a few of our friends, but we aren’t writing this advice to make friends (or commissions). It also seems to fly in the face of the convincing stories and beautiful pictures and those wonderful graphs that go up towards the horizon, with barely a pause for breathe.
Why are alternative investments so risky? Once you move outside market traded and regulated assets, like the stock and bond market, a lot of the protections in place vanish. • There are no custodian accounts built into the system to protect the investor from actions of the asset manager. Think about that for a second, there is nothing stopping your wine broker, loading up a case of your valuable wine in the back of his van and selling it and later telling you that it had been “lost or broken”. Of course, that can give him a bad reputation, but by that time, the fraud has happened, and, if done in a small way on enough people, the perpetrator has disappeared somewhere with his illicit gains. • The valuation methodologies on alternative investments can become divorced from reality, meaning you are most likely paying overinflated prices for assets. These methodologies often must be devised because trading happens so rarely (unlike stocks), but they can be abused, making it look like you have a profit when
Practically all alternative investments sold by a broker ends in a loss Not every investment ends in complete loss of capital, but the failure of programs and strategies that we have been pitched, and avoided, is so regular from what we can see, that your hit rate might be as low as 2 in 10. This makes the stock market look positively low risk. Not that you’ll ever see this risk reflected in the sales material of alternative investment salesmen. Even worse, we think that perhaps as many as one third
you actually don’t. Independent valuation experts are paid by the manager, so how independent are they truly? We have seen this happen to property funds like student accommodation funds for example, that while otherwise solid, ended up with problems unloading their assets that had overinflated prices and thus locked up their client’s assets for years whilst they waited for reality to catch up the model. • There are no protections in place against self-dealing. This is where your helpful broker buys from the market at a lower price and then sells to you for a higher price. For example, your wine broker might pick up a case of Chateau Lafite for $10,000 and then sell it to you for $14,000 USD. Would you ever know that your wine broker quietly pocketed $4,000 completely risk free? Later, the broker can just say, “demand isn’t that strong right now, so we suggest you hold for another two years while we charge you a management fee for crossing our fingers and hoping that the market bails out our poor deal”. Sounds like an awesome deal, right? Protections against this were put in place in securities markets more than 100 years ago, but they don’t exist in these alternative markets. • Fear the word ‘guarantee’ and you’ll
Bill Longstreet avoid the worst of the worst. Whenever my partners and I hear the word ‘guarantee’ from an investment provider, we go running immediately. There is no better predictor of investment failure, in my opinion, than investment providers who use that word. Look for a company that is growing and making money now (think Facebook and not Tesla) and you are likely to do far better than looking for a safe haven that is anything but. Don’t be the patsy So, our simple rule of thumb is, if you are not already an expert in your preferred alternative asset class, then it should be avoided. If you need entry to the market via a broker (who might also call himself an IFA or financial adviser) because you don’t know enough, then you shouldn’t be playing the game. Felix Gonzalez-Torres @ Rockbund Art Museum
he exhibition is a comprehensive view of work by the late American artist, who is renowned for his unconventional methodology and poignant sensitivity. The unique nature of his work takes this exhibition beyond a retrospective; it constitutes a genuine renewal of his art. Selected from 30 institutions and collections across the world, the exhibition includes over 40 pieces, spanning from 1987 to 1994, invites audiences to contemplate issues, both public and private, which are still relevant today. Throughout his work, the tension between the public and private, the shared and the personal, comprises a recurrent theme for GonzalezTorres. Many of the artist’s works consist of everyday objects, such as strings of
light bulbs, mirrors, wall clocks or printed sheets of paper. Other works are comprised of spills of candy, mirrors and jigsaw puzzles. His artwork itself is like a puzzle, but lacking a univocal order. Its demure minimal aesthetic solicits the audience to put the pieces together for themselves, inviting a plurality of pictures to emerge. One of the most intriguing aspects of this exhibition is the dramatic shift in the historical and cultural context of the artworks as they travel to Shanghai. Much of Gonzalez-Torres’ work allows the environment to challenge and alter its aesthetic. By staging the exhibition in contemporary China, it will open up the artist’s work to a new context, as a 21st century Chinese public confronts its
message for the first time. It is well known that Gonzalez-Torres produced his work in the 80s and 90s, in an American society and art community profoundly affected by the AIDS epidemic. However, it would be a mistake to engage with his work as simply dealing with homosexual issues or the AIDS crisis. These issues represent that circumstances under which the work were made and can be understood as platforms for exploring human values, relationships and aspirations at large, both in the artist and in the viewer. Felix Gonzalez-Torres runs until 25 December @ Rockbund Art Museum. 20 Huqiu Lu, near Beijing Dong Lu. Tel: 3310 9985. Web: www. rockbundartmuseum.org
rt is snacks, life is dinner. With the participation of 38 artists and artist groups and their unique art works, the exhibition showcases the unclassifiable ideas, experiments and experiences of diverse lifestyles in different places all over the world. Snacks are the unnecessary comfort outside the main meals of the day. People will make mistakes for this momentary joy and squander time in pursuit of a particular choice. “Snacks” started as a publication launched in 2008 that was created, edited and published by artists and designers. It eventually led to collaborations with over two hundred artists from all over the globe, some of which are presenting their works in this exhibition. “Snacks” the exhibition, presents the content as well as the “packaging”. Surprisingly, the exhibition hall and the hallway share the same length, which gives the exhibition hall an additional function: passage. It is also here that this bridge without a landscape and the concrete building with few pedestrians face each other in quietude — this is an autonomous “city.” And autonomy is exactly the condition for the survival of the artists in “Snacks”: no interfering with each other or intentional communication. In this autonomous and improvisational environment, the artists perform their experimentations with great latitude, improvising on the spot. They utilise modelling, configuration and colours to create “noises”. Their performance is intuitive and anxious, and in disturbing and stimulating our sensory nerves, it evokes in us the yearning for, and memories of, the festival. The artists in “Snacks” gather through the form of an exhibition, but they have every intention to transform it into a happy revolt and a celebration that cannot be written in history. Snacks runs until 16 October @ Power Station Of Art. 200 Huayuangang Lu, near Miaojiang Lu. Tel: 3127 8535. Web: www.powerstationofart.org
Jiang Pengyi Solo Show: Grace @ ShanghART Gallery
wo series of works, Trace and Grace, are showcased in Main and H Space respectively. In conjunction with the exhibition of the same title, Grace, a large-scale gelatine silver photograph series in black and white, marks the artist’s endeavours in returning to the traditional darkroom as well as to the antique photo developing technology. Another new Polaroid series Trace, sized in 8’’×10’’, breaks the limitation of the shooting mode of photography, which is a continuous practice formed under the artist’s conception of light and imagery. Grace, an array of large-scale gelatine works delicately records the ineffable, magnificent landscapes that have invariably evolved since the origin of the earth. This series is captured from the Arctic Circle and various countries in the Southern Hemisphere over a span of three years. The artist’s darkroom experimental series, Trace, captures the instant marks, which
are imprinted by hands on the photosensitive medium. While the audience marvel at the intricate and exquisite tone of Grace, the other abstract series, Trace impresses us with its simplicity, lightness and swiftness simultaneously. Throughout years of persistent exploration, self-reflection and self-denial, Jiang’s works are created by experiencing both long-term contemplation and inspirational improvisation that present the broader, richer and in-depth momentum of his works. Born in Yuanjiang, Hunan Province in 1977, Jiang Pengyi graduated from China Academy of Art, currently lives and works in Beijing. His creation articulates a genre of surreal spectacle and delicate narration of the scene primarily with photography and video, which reveals the consciousness and the ephemera of individuals. Bali 101 The Island Of The Gods Nyima Pratten
It Really Is More Fun In The Philippines Nyima Pratten Photos by Kelly Jiao and Nyima Pratten
Kecak Fire Dance at Uluwatu Temple
Ceremony at Tirta Empul
Conjuring images of a spiritual, exotic island set resplendent in azure seas and basking in rays of sun, Bali is a popular, exotic getaway for tourists from all around the world.
here are said to be over 20,000 temples in Bali, and a great sense of Hindu spirituality is still alive and well on the island, permeating everyday life. This means that visitors will undoubtedly experience a religious festival, ceremony or simple offering at least once during their stay, adding to the magic of the trip. The locals are friendly and welcoming to those from all walks of life, and the service standard in every establishment is impeccable. From the smallest roadside warung café to the loftiest hotel, people go above and beyond to make visitors fall in love with the island. Connected to the world by its eternally bustling airport, Bali is a seven-hour direct flight away from Shanghai, or a longer slog on low-cost airline via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. The island is easy to travel around by taxi, rented car or motorbike, and is a relatively cheap South East Asian holiday destination. Thanks to the strong influence from Australian holidaymakers, the island is abounding with trendy cafes, brunch spots and juice bars. Rather than just Indonesian food, every restaurant seems to offer a fusion menu of Western and Eastern delights, and do not be surprised to see even the smallest hole in the wall cafes offering burgers and pizzas along with the traditional nasi goring. The first stop on any grand tour of Bali should be the surfer town of Canggu, a 45-minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Less developed than other parts of the island, this is a true haven for backpackers and surfers alike. Unlike Seminyak, there are many local stalls on the beach offering cut-price sun loungers, food and drinks as well as surfboard rental and surf lessons. Set back from the beach, and less pretentious than the beach clubs and resorts further up the stretch of shoreline, are cool cafes and restaurants, offering respite from the sun and a place to hangout and meet other travellers. Pop into Old Man’s for a gelato and spend a couple of hours on one of their beanbags looking out towards the surf.
Jukung boat in Manggis
Just along the coast from Canggu is Seminyak, an upmarket beach town with some of the best bars, restaurants and shops on the island, not to mention some of the trendiest hotels. Stay at the Alila Seminyak, peacefully set slightly away from the main strip, yet within easy reach, this property boasts an impressive beach and excellent Beach Bar for sunset cocktails and people watching. Although the popular beach clubs of Ku De Ta and Potato Head are nearby, we preferred staying at the hotel’s bar for the excellent drink deals, personalised service and down to earth vibe. After sunset, head out to the aptly named “Eat Street” to feast on fabulous Asian fusion dishes at Mama San and drinks at raucous, Mexican-inspired restaurant and bar, Motel Mexicola. Uluwatu, an hour’s drive from Seminyak, yet a world away from the party town, is a peaceful peninsula and the most south westerly tip of Bali. Less developed, the area is populated by small villages and boutique resorts. The Banyan Tree Ungasan is one such resort, an exceptional hotel with intimate, spacious villas and large private plunge

pools, situated on the jutting coastline and looking out towards the Indian Ocean, ideal for a romantic getaway. A short drive from the Banyan Tree is Uluwatu Temple, one of the holiest temples on the island. Go just before sunset to admire the temple, balanced atop a dramatic cliff, and buy a ticket to the Kecak Fire Dance in the same complex, which tells the fateful story of Rama and Sita. This traditional Balinese dance is preformed as the sun sets behind the silhouette of Uluwatu Temple, before the dancers light their fires to dramatic effect. The show is busy, so get there earlier to grab a seat facing west, towards the temple and sunset. Continuing the peace and tranquillity of Uluwatu, head over to Manggis, on the East Coast of the island. This untouched beach resort is an undiscovered gem, which showcases the beauty of the island’s traditional culture and architecture, set against steep, green Mount Agung, which dramatically slopes down towards the black volcanic sand of the coastline. Spend a few days getting lost on a mountain bike and stay at the boutique hotel, Alila Manggis. This hotel is an affordable, well-appointed property, with great service and unexpected extras, such as a pop-up outdoor beach bar every evening. Take the hotel’s traditional jukung fishing boat out before sunset and head east to witness a spectacular, unobstructed sunrise over Lombok Island.
After the tranquillity of the East Coast, head inland to Ubud, the island’s spiritual and cultural hub. Although Ubud town centre is a busy affair, crammed full of bars, restaurants, motorbikes and monkeys, just a few steps away from the main strip are unspoilt rice terrace fields, temples and authentic Balinese villages, so you really can get the best of both worlds. There are some awe-inspiring hotels and resorts in this part of the island, for example, the well-established Four Seasons Resort Bali, Sayan, offering a magnificent wellness and spa concept, with luxurious private villas and suites set amongst the backdrop of jungle and rice terraces. The newly arrived Mandapa, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve is also an impressive and lavish complex. With magnificent views of green rice terrace fields and jungle as well as a fantastic finedining restaurant, Kubu, with intimate bamboo, cocooned dining spaces. An alternative option is OneWorld Retreats
When in Ubud, do not miss the opportunity to white water raft down the Ayung River or visit The Green School and Tirta Empul, a sacred water temple. The Green School allows guests to tour the property in the morning, along with members of the school community. It is an inspirational look into the future of “green” teaching around the world. Tirta Empul, located in nearby Tampaksiring, is one of the holiest temples on the island, where locals and tourists alike can purify themselves by bathing in the holy spring water flowing through the ancient temple.
Finally, end the tour by heading back towards the airport, to the traditional fishing town of Jimbaran. The famous shoreline is home to a few resorts, Uluwatu Temple however, none are as famous as the magnificent Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay. This OG hotel recently underwent extensive renovations and is undoubtedly the most luxurious in the area. Hangout at the hotel’s beach club, Sundara, or Coconut Grove, where you can try a variety of water sports including surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing. As the sun sets, head down the beach towards the small village, where the local warungs set up tables and chairs on the sand and serve grilled seafood from the local waters. Enjoy the final night of your trip with a Bintang Beer as the waves lap against your toes and the sky turns many shades of red, purple and blue.

Positive Parent-School Communication Ms Victoria Foster Deputy Head Of Junior School @ Dulwich College Shanghai
Parent and teacher communication plays a huge role in a successful academic career, however, keeping the communication lines open throughout the school year can be a tricky path to navigate. Teachers understand the role parents play in a child’s education, and want interactions to be positive and productive at all times. Here are some tips for communicating effectively with your child’s teacher this year… • Do: begin the year by making an effort to introduce yourself to your child’s teacher either in writing or in person. • Don’t: wait until there is a big problem before getting in touch – regular communication to get clarification or advice helps if you have a concern later on. Don’t think you are being a nuisance if you communicate with your child’s teacher regularly. • Do: respond to any personal communication even if it is just a quick email to acknowledge you have received the information.
• Don’t: ask to speak to the Head Teacher or Principal as soon as you have a concern – go directly to the teacher first. If you don't agree, or want further clarification, feel free to ask to speak to a more senior member of staff. Remember, part of a teacher job is to communicate with parents and they expect parents to reach out to them if there is an issue or concern in the first instance. • Do: be diplomatic and clear when something does concern you, especially if you are expressing your thoughts in writing. Use positive and open phrases such as: can we discuss… or I’m confused about… • Don’t: hesitate to book a meeting if you want to discuss something in person. If you book a meeting, explain the topic of the meeting in advance if possible. Go to the meeting openminded, ready to listen and prepared to find a solution with your child’s teacher. • Don’t: attempt to talk to your child’s teacher when they are teaching a class. Teachers are busy during the school day but are often available before and after school. If it is urgent, popping in at the start of the day and asking for a time to return allows the teacher to find a suitable time to meet with you. This will mean you have plenty of time to discuss the topic together without the teacher feeling rushed or distracted. • Do: advocate for your child. Your child’s teacher may know them in an academic setting but you’re with him/her for the rest of the time, so don’t be afraid to share your observations and ideas.
The Qipao: A Timeless Dress Luke Flatley Tour Guide @ Newman Tours
Shanghai Fashion week is upon us this month, from 12 October to 19 October, and the city's catwalks will be graced by a host of outfits from China's modern fashion scene. However, whilst many trends will come and go, one outfit that has never fallen out of style in China is the qipao. From its obscure beginnings as the costume of nomadic tribes on the northern steppes, to the dress of choice for Shanghainese fashionistas, how has this outfit survived throughout the centuries?
he dress that most consider the progenitor to the modern qipao originated in what is now Heilongjiang province in the NorthEast of what is now China. That area, also known as Manchuria, was long considered a barbaric territory swarming with uncultured nomadic tribes. One such tribe was the Manchus, whose women wore dresses with slits to make riding around on horses possible. They also wore tall, upright collars to keep their necks from freezing in the bitter cold. These defining features can still be seen on modern day qipaos. In 1644, the Manchurians finally succeeded in conquering China. One of the policies they implemented, after having established their Qing Dynasty, was to enforce a national style of dress on the Chinese population. For men, this involved shaving the front half of their head and growing a long queue (the penalty if you were seen wearing any other hairstyle would be to lose your head). As for Chinese women, they had to wear a long-sleeved, A-frame version of the qipao. The design was, of course, much more suited to disguising the female form than the modern qipao. However, the high collar and horse riding slits were already there. The latter half of the Qing dynasty marked the arrival of the Westerners in China and with them came a host of new ideas and styles. One popular hobby amongst women at the time, particularly if they had just returned from being educated in the West, was to progressively experiment with the length of their qipaos. Some of these experiments ended up above the knee even before the Qing Dynasty collapsed in 1912. Once the revolution arrived, Western influence and experimental fervour created the perfect conditions for the qipao to develop into something that truly exhibited the personality of the Western world, whilst retaining its Chinese essence. Chinese women, emboldened by this fresh start, seized the opportunity to hike hemlines high, hug the body with form-fitting shapes and take advantage of the side slits to reveal more leg than had previously been acceptable. However, this form of qipao quickly gained an association with Shanghai's prostitutes, who used the dress to flaunt their wares. Thus, the same outfit that had clothed nomadic tribes and the Qing Dynasty imperial court had become the uniform of Shanghai's kerbcrawlers. Being associated with prostitution might not sound like a promising development for the fate of the qipao, but because Hollywood was making lots of movies
that explored the carnal reputation that China’s coastal cities had developed, the dress was shown on the silver screen throughout the world. Movies like Shanghai Express (1932) and The World Of Suzie Wong (1960) showcased this exotic and
sensual dress to such an extent that by the 1960s women all over the world wanted one. Another important proponent of the qipao was President Chiang Kaishek’s wife, Song Meiling, who was a terrific public speaker in both Chinese and English. Having developed immense popularity at home and abroad alike, she appropriated the qipao and brought it even further into the mainstream. For her, it was a perfect choice because it was both old and new, Chinese and modern. Today, the qipao is still hugely popular, and has become the de facto national dress for Chinese women. This is, of course, ironic given the nomadic roots of the costume and the way in which it was once used to subjugate the Chinese, but none of that has managed to get in the way of a costume of such svelte beauty. To learn more about the history of the qipao, and find the best places in Shanghai to tailor one, sign up for Newman Tours’ Public Qipao Tour from 10am to 1pm on 16 October. RMB 390 (adults); RMB 290 (kids under 14); includes threehour tour with a native English speaking guide, private vehicle and all site entry. eighing around 180 to 250 grams, the hairy critters have a naturally rich taste, and are quite often served whole, lightly steamed. Although the small pieces of meat are difficult to remove from the exoskeleton, the energy expensed in retrieving the tiny morsels makes the fleshy prize all the sweeter. For beginners, we suggest pulling the bottom side of the hairy crab away from the body in order to lever open the top shell and expose the dazzling, orange yolk-like substance inside. After slurping
up the roe, with lashings of sweetened rice wine vinegar, break the body in half to separate the slender claws and legs. For a richer taste, pick a female crab for their silky sweet centre. To truly feel like a local, heed their sage advice and balance the yin of the cold hairy crab with the yang of a warming element, such as ginger tea or huangjiu. The most prized hairy crabs come from in and around the deep, cold waters of Yangcheng Lake, so ensure that you eat the best specimens by visiting one of these restaurants.
This Bund-side restaurant has unveiled a menu of Yangcheng Lake hairy crab dishes to capitalise on one of the finest flavours in Chinese cuisine. Crabmeat and crab roe sautéed with sesame, crab roe braised with shredded mandarin and crab claws wok-fried with asparagus are among the highlights of the menu and showcase the delicate evolution of traditional hairy crab recipes. Enjoy the succulent crustacean in dishes on the a la carte menu, such as double boiled crab roe with tofu (RMB 128), xiaolongbao with crab meat (RMB 18) or, the grand prize itself, full, steamed hairy crabs (RMB 398 per crab). Alternatively, enjoy one of the special set menus (starting at RMB 688 per person for 10 dishes) to truly get to grips with this famous ingredient. Fibre: You’re Not Eating Enough Of It An important part of any meal plan, most people don’t eat nearly enough dietary fibre. And since the stuff is an aid to digestion, can help reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes as well as help to lower cholesterol, there’s really no excuse.
dd these five key fruits and vegetables to your mealtimes to stay regular and help you feel fuller for longer!
Asian Pears Also known as an apple pear, this winter fruit is often enjoyed raw with cheese or in salads in the West, however, it is used much more inventively in Asia. Try stewing with pork in soups or add to meat marinades. The pears can even be boiled down to make a cough syrup and are often used as a natural sweetener in soy sauce based dishes. A medium sized pear contains a little over four grams of fibre – that’s almost 18 per cent of the recommended daily amount!
Less popular than their orange and yellow cousins, dark purple potatoes can easily be used as a substitute for their less nutritious relatives. With virtually no fat or cholesterol, a single serving of three small taters contains four grams of dietary fibre. Enjoy mashed, fried, roasted or baked, but be careful to not overcook as they are prone to becoming mushy and losing their flavour.
Asia’s answer to spinach, this leafy, cabbage-like green shows up commonly as a side dish and is often a star player in stir-fries. Pac ked with vitamins A and C, one cup of the green stuff has just 20 calories, and provides a hearty seven gra ms of fibre. FIELDS offers a wide selectio n of fibre rich fruit and veggies. Check their website now!
Dried Figs Originating in the Middle East and the Mediterranean, dried figs make for a perfect fibre packed snack on the go. A 100 gram serving contains around 10 grams of fibre, almost a third of the recommended daily amount for adults. Use the seeded fruit in smoothies, add to raw desserts, toss into your granola recipe or simply enjoy on their own.
Pumpkin T’is the season for pumpkin carving. Instead of being a wasteful Wanda, why not pump up your fibre intake with pumpkin rather than using it solely for decoration? While not a notable fibre powerhouse, one cup of raw pumpkin still yields almost three grams of fibre. Pumpkin meat not your thing? Have no fear, 28 grams of the seeds contains around one gram of fibre – simply clean then lightly roast or dry fry.

Eco Is The New Lux: Green Drinks Chinese Forum Along with the rapid development of economy, consumption habits have been increasing faster than ever before. With the ease of online shopping, people can purchase anything they need online—from food, clothes, and skin care products, to intangible products and services. In addition, the diversity of products available is rapidly growing which further increases our appetite for mass consumption. We often have the attitude that this ease of consumption is a positive step forward, although it has massive implications on our environment. Questions that will be looked at during the forum are; how can we change our purchasing habits to lower our consumption, and where can we purchase items that have a lower impact on the environment? 6:30pm to 9pm. Kurt Vile And The Violators Kurt Vile is a bonafide indie-folk mastermind. His soaring solo career, buoyed by the critical acclaim that greeted 2015’s b'lieve i'm goin' down…, has bought him a newfound mainstream visibility, one he wears with nonchalant ease. It’s a Plastic Planet: Green Drinks October Forum From garbage bags and water bottles to children’s toys and packaging, plastic appears everywhere in countless forms. Plastic has its advantages, including durability, affordability, and its versatile use, which enables it to remain one of the most commonly used materials in the world. However, as we are all aware, plastic is not an eco-friendly material and in fact has a significantly longer list of disadvantages. Disposed plastic continuously clogs our waterways and often ends up in oceans and other natural habitats. Some questions being looked at during this forum are; what are the major advantages and disadvantages of plastics and how much plastics do we produce, how is it produced and how much do we recover? 6:30pm to 9pm.
