“Sometimes people don’t know they high blood pressure or diabetes, or they haven’t been taking their medicine.”

Oakhurst Medical Centers, Emory Hillandale Hospital, JenCare Neighborhood Senior Medical Centers and Advanced Urology will offer free screenings for hypertension, diabetes and prostate cancer on Oct. 13 at CrossRoadsNews Seniors/Baby Boomers Expo at the Mall at Stonecrest. The expo, in its sixth year, takes place noon to 5 p.m. on the mall’s lower level.

Free screenings for diabetes, hypertension and prostate cancer at expo Free health screenings for diabetes, hypertension and prostate cancer will be available on Oct. 13 at CrossRoadsNews’ sixth annual Seniors/Baby Boomers Expo at the Mall at Stonecrest. Oakhurst Medical Centers and Emory Hillandale Hospital will offer free diabetes and hypertension screenings; JenCare will do hypertension screenings; and Advanced Urology will offer free PSA screenings for prostate cancer. All three diseases disproportionately affect African Americans. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is often called the silent killer because it has no symptoms, and victims are often unaware that they have it. The only way to determine if your blood pressure is high is to test for it. Physicians say that prolonged hypertension can lead to a stroke.

Diabetes and pre-diabetes, which the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says now afflicts more than 100 million Americans or 9.4 percent of the US population, is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. But the CDC’s 2015 study “National Diabetes Statistic Report: 2017, Estimates of Diabetes and Its Burden in the United States,” found that most people are unaware that they have the disease. That means that 7.2 million or 23.8 percent of people with the diabetes, and an estimated 84.1 million people, or 33.9 percent of U.S. population with pre-diabetes, don’t know they are at risk for serious illnesses like stroke and heart attack. Pre-diabetes – higher than normal blood glucose levels – is a condition that leads to Type 2 diabetes within five years, if left untreated.

Diabetes screening is key in helping identify people who don’t know they have high blood sugar so that they can get treatment and make life-style changes to reduce their risks for serious illnesses. Tarri Johnson, a spokesperson for Oakhurst Medical Centers, said that over the more than 10 years of screening participants at CrossRoadsNews Expos and through the community, they have identified many people with hypertension and high blood sugar. “We have had occasion where we have had to call for an ambulance,” she said. “Sometimes people don’t know they high blood pressure or diabetes, or they haven’t been taking their medicine.” Drs. Karl Pete and Derek Prabharasuth of Advanced Urology’s Decatur clinic, will be offering men free PSA [prostate-specific antigen] screenings for prostate cancer which

grows in the prostate gland, located under a man’s bladder A prostate-specific antigen test measures the level of PSA – a substance made mostly by the prostate – in the blood. Men who have prostate cancer have increased amounts of PSA in their blood. The annual test is recommended for African-American men at age 40. For other men, screening should begin at age 50. Advanced Urology will also provide literature on overactive bladder, urinary, bowel incontinence and enlarge prostate. Ebony Bagwell, Advanced Urology spokesperson, said it’s all about education. “Overall we will educate both women and men on urological health conditions and treatment options,” she said. The expo, sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, takes place noon to 5 p.m. on the lower level of the Mall at Stonecrest. For more information, call 404-284-1888.

Water packs a punch Many people struggle with hydration because they may be too busy to grab some water, or they may not want to use the restroom frequently. But proper hydration may be one of the best ways to instantly boost your mental alertness, reduce body aches, and improve elimination. Your body is 70 percent water and operates well when it’s hydrated. Lack of water can contribute to confusion, dizziness, a false sense of hunger (which can attribute to over-eating and poor food choices), dry or dull looking skin, muscle cramps

and heart palpitations. That’s definitely not living your best life. So do the easy thing and drink more water. If water isn’t appealing you can dress it up with cucumber slices and a sprig of mint, or a squeeze of lemon with a touch of honey. You may have heard that your body doesn’t benefit from the water in caffeinated drinks or food, but that’s not entirely true. Juicy foods like watermelon and oranges can improve your hydration, and as long as you aren’t drinking too much soda or coffee your

“[The expos] pull the community together, and I like to inspire people to believe in themselves regardless of their age or origin.”

Senior models to wow audience at expo’s Macys fashion show The models who will strut their stuff at the sixth annual CrossRoadsNews Seniors/ Baby Boomers Fashion Show at the Mall at Stonecrest on Oct. 13 includes octogenarians, but please don’t hold their age against them. The 45 men and women – many from the Lou Walker Senior Center in Stonecrest – are not letting their ages hold them back. Jan Reynolds, Icon Models & Talent founder, who is in her fifth year of coordinating and choreographing the popular fashion show, said the models believe in themselves and are not shy on the runway. “They are well prepared,” said Reynolds, who teaches basic and advanced modeling classes at the Lou Walker Senior Center. “We have been rehearsing, and they are ready to show out.” The show, which is featuring fashions from Stonecrest Macy’s, takes place at 1 p.m. on the Main Stage on the mall’s lower level. Reynolds said the show will pay tribute to Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, who died in August. “We will model to her music,” she said. “She made such an impact on all of us, we just wanted to honor her music.” During a winter fashion scene, the models will also showcase boots for fall and winter. Reynolds, the first Miss Black Missouri in 1976, coordinates fashion shows for two CrossRoadsNews expos – the Family & Backto-School featuring kindergarten to college students, and the Seniors/Baby Boomers. She says she loves the expo fashion shows because CrossRoadsNews Community Expos are so important to south DeKalb County. “People come out for them,” she said. “They pull the community together, and I like to inspire people to believe in themselves regardless of their age or origin.” On Nov. 1, Reynolds said she will open her first Icon Models & Talent Studio on the mall’s upper level across from Round 1. Open enrollment is the time to change health or prescription drug coverage for 2019 or join a Medicare Advantage Plan.

‘Medicare and You,’ a primer to help seniors pick the right option Seniors on Medicare and those becoming eligible for the program this fall can get a wealth of information from www.medicare.gov and from the program’s 2019 Medicare and You handbook. The 120-page handbook walks Medicare members and enrollees through plan options and answers information about benefits and costs. It can be downloaded at , available at www.medicare.gov/sites/default/files/2018-09/10050medicare-and-you.pdf. If you already have Medicare, you don’t need to sign up for Medicare each year, but if you find a better plan, you can switch during the annual Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 open enrollment period. Medicare encourages seniors to start now comparing their coverage with other options. Visit Medicare.gov/find-a-plan. Open enrollment is the time to change health or prescription drug coverage for 2019 or join a Medicare Advantage Plan. Changes made during open enrollment take effect Jan. 1, 2019. Between Jan. 1. and March 31, 2019, seniors in a Medicare Advantage Plan, can make one change to a different plan or switch back to Original Medicare (and join a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan) . Here are some other frequently asked questions covered in the handbook:

It is a zero-premium plan. We offer primary care, labs, X-ray and pharmacy under one roof.”

Kaiser Permanente to discuss Medicare open enrollment at expo

Seniors who are three months shy of their 65th birthday, and those wanting to make changes to their Medicare choices, will be able to do so Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 during the annual open enrollment period for Medicare. Adults younger than 65 who have certain disabilities can also sign up for medical coverage during open enrollment. There will be plenty of information about the upcoming enrollment period at CrossRoadsNews’ sixth annual Seniors/Baby Boomers Expo taking place noon to 5 p.m. on the Mall at Stonecrest’s lower level. Title sponsor Kaiser Permanente, which serves 1.5 million Medicare enrollees in its Senior Advantage HMO, will provide information and take questions about various Medicare options. Kaiser staff will also share dates, times and locations of KP’s “Straight-Talk” seminars, and schedule appointments for enrollment, which begins Oct. 15. Christel Finley, Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare & Medicaid sales specialist, said seniors have a seven month window to make selections from Medicare Part A, B, C & D plans. Medicare, created on July 30, 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed amendments to the Social Security Act, is managed by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid of the Department of Health and Human Services. It offers: n Part A – Hospital Coverage n Part B – Medical Coverage n Part C – Advantage, in which seniors buy coverage through a private health plan, and n Part D – Prescription Drug Plan. Each year, newly eligible seniors can sign up for original Medicare during open enrollment. Because Medicare Parts A and B do not cover all medical costs, eligible seniors can buy more coverage through Medicare-approved private health plans, called “Medicare Advantage” plans like Permanente’s Senior Advantage which offers coverage for Parts A, B, C & D.

Christel Finley, Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare & Medicaid sales specialist, will discuss their Senior Advantage plan on the Main Stage at 3 p.m.

KP’s Senior Advantage is one of more than five Medicare Advantage providers in Georgia. Seniors can enroll up to three months before their 65th birthday, during their birthday month, or three months after their birthday. Finley, who will provide details about their Senior Advantage plan from the expo’s Main Stage at 3 p.m., says seniors who are enrolling for the first time, and those who

want to drop, switch, or change their coverage, should consider Kaiser Permanente. She says KP’s Senior Advantage offers a one-stop integrated care system. “It is a zero-premium plan,” she said. “We offer primary care, labs, X-ray and pharmacy under one roof.” For 2018, Kaiser Permanente received a 4.5-stars out of a possible 5 stars from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid which

rates all private Advantage Plans. Medicare coverage secured during the annual open enrollment period becomes effect Jan. 1, 2019. Eligible seniors who don’t enroll during open enrollment, and don’t have coverage from an employer, face a 10 percent penalty. For more information, visit kp.org/ medicare.
