Fundraising Through a Pandemic
Larch Hills Nordic Society Trail Lighting Project
Headlamps will no longer be necessary to ski at Larch Hills Recreation Area (Salmon Arm) during the evening hours next winter! Thanks to substantial grants from the B.C. Gaming Capital Grant program and the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, as well as grants from the North Okanagan Regional District and Shuswap Community Foundation, the Larch Hills Nordic Society Trail Lighting Project will get underway this year. LHNS is preparing to install 3.5 km of trail lighting this summer and 1.5-2.5 km of additional lighting during the summer of 2022. The total cost of this project is over $500,000.
LHNS has been fundraising for the Trail Lighting Project since the fall of 2019. This project was one of four fi nalists in the 2019 Kraft Heinz Project Play competition because of incredible support received from local, provincial, and national cross-country ski communities. Over 250 people submitted nomination letters in support of the Trail Lighting Project and many people spent countless hours voting for the project online. LHNS did not win the grand prize, but the club did receive $25,000 to kick off the fundraising campaign.
In December 2019, the LHNS Trail Lighting Committee organized a fundraising Holiday Concert to promote the Trail Lighting Project. Once again, LHNS and community members rose to the occasion, both as performers at the concert and as Trail Lighting Project donors. Concert attendees were treated to three hours of performances (ranging from rock bands to classical pianists to folk singers) along with home-baked goods and refreshments. It was evident that there is an abundance of musical talent in LHNS and the community of Salmon Arm. Nobody knew that just three months later the world would be gripped by the Covid-19 pandemic, and that large fundraising events would have to be put on hold for some time.
Fundraising through the pandemic has been challenging. Many families and businesses have struggled fi nancially, and several grant programs have been interrupted. Despite this, many local businesses and individuals have donated generously to the Trail Lighting Project and LHNS is very appreciative of these contributions. If there is an upside to the pandemic, it is that Larch Hills Recreation Area was busier than ever this winter as people discovered that the trails were groomed, and that cross-country skiing was permitted. LHNS membership increased dramatically as many new people embraced this great winter sport. With the addition of a trail lighting system, skiers will also be able to enjoy evening skiing for years to come.
Outreach for Cross Country Ski Clubs in Northern BC
Thanks to Nordiq Canada and AltaGas, Cross Country BC was pleased to launch the ‘Build The North’ initiative this past winter. This special project provided coach outreach and support to the many clubs in northern BC, from Williams Lake, to Fort St John, to Burns Lake, and everywhere in between. The North played a very prominent role in the history and development of cross country skiing in this province and many clubs are now looking forward to an injection of new energy and knowledge. Thanks to continued support from Nordiq Canada, plans are already underway for further outreach this coming season, including dryland training.
The primary goal is to improve club Skill Development Programs (SDP) through helping current and aspiring coaches to improve their coaching skills. Additionally, junior racing programs and Ski S’Kool programs stand to benefi t. The club visitations and online sessions include technique and info sessions with club coaches and leaders, demos of eff ective SDP sessions for the various stages of development, general Q&A sessions on all things skiing, and much more.
The primary coach for the project is Graeme Moore, who is centrally based out of Prince George. Graeme has a long history with cross country skiing; he is NCCP L2C certifi ed, an active NCCP Learning Facilitator, and a former club head coach. He has two young children, both of whom are in the Jackrabbit program. Says Graeme: “I am excited, inspired, and hopeful that this program will make a diff erence!”
