Low cost alternative software by Gary Poss Software for the PC or MAC from big companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, Symantec and others can be expensive for the home or small business user. Here are some good free or low cost applications that can save you a bundle of money. An excellent free antivirus program for the PC is AVG Free 2013 which is available from Softpedia.com. Click on the Windows Tab and then enter “Free AVG 2013” in the Search Field. For the MAC, I suggest the Sophos Anti-Virus Home Edition application available from Sophos.com (or Softpedia.com). For a superb integrated Office Program, I highly recommend LibreOffice which includes word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, drawing, math, and database sections. There are versions for PC, MAC, and LINUX computers – all are compatible with Microsoft Office. It’s available from LibreOffice.org. Even though it is “free,” I suggest you make a donation to assist in continued support and development. When it comes to photo editing, Adobe’s Photoshop is the premiere professional application, as it should be for $700. For the average home and small business user, I suggest the free Picasa program available at picasa.google.com. It is available for both the PC and the MAC. It is an excellent application for the novice through intermediate user. For more versatility and sophistication (with a steeper learning curve), I suggest using GIMP which is available for PC, MAC, and LINUX computers at Gimp.org. In many cases GIMP rivals or surpasses Photoshop in capability and ease of use. In reference to malware, spyware, and trojan removal tools, I suggest Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware for the PC and Mac Malware Remover for the MAC. Both are free and available at Softpedia.com. For a variety of software there are several websites that come to mind. Softpedia is an excellent resource not only for the PC, but MAC and LINUX computers as well. Take a look around the Softpedia website. You’ll find freeware, shareware, and commercial software for virtually any purpose. Another very good source for software is Download.com which is part of the Ziff-Davis media company that publishes PC Magazine and Computer Shopper. Enjoy your quest for alternative software.
