Since the Enlightenment, God has been relegated to the realm of mythology, ignorance, or psychological projection. Darwin, Freud, Nietzsche, and Marx, each attacked the idea of God. Yet the topic of God occupies more space in the collection titled “The Great Books of the Western World” than any other. We are fascinated with the concept of God whether we believe God exists or not. There is a significant amount of recent material in science, philosophy, theology and other disciplines which point out the fallacies of the opponents of God, and firmly establish His existence. This material was not produced by uneducated religious louts, but by men and women who write on the highest levels, and are respected members of the academic community. Dr. Alvin Platinga was the first protestant ever to chair the Department of Philosophy at Notre Dame University. He was elected president of the American Philosophical Association which has been historically dominated by atheists. One of his associates there said “I’m still an atheist, but I can’t refute what he says about God!” Another example is Dr. Francis Collins who is both a scientist and a physician. He was the head of the Human Genome Project and yet he writes books which defend the existence of God. Over the next several weeks at Hill Country Bible Church we are going to explore the existence of God, and also the objections to His existence. Is there scientific evidence for a beginning of the universe and for intelligent design? Where does our moral impulse come from? Where do ideas like the multi-verse and string theory fit in? What’s so special about the man called Jesus and how is the Bible different from other religious books? If you are an atheist, agnostic, skeptic, Christian, or something else, we invite you to come and explore with us.
