Marissa Ellis, Canyon Lake High School’s First State Champion Under the guidance of Coach Lacey Lambert, Marisa Ellis, a Senior at Canyon Lake High School(CHLS), has earned her place in local history as the High School’s first ever State Champion. Coach Lambert has earned her place, as well. After her move from Midlothian (Texas), Marissa attended CLHS for the past two years, competing in volleyball, basketball, and track her junior year and volleyball and track her senior year. Track competition included Triple Jump, High Jump, and Long Jump. She went to State last year in Triple Jump and placed 6th. Results this year at the UIL State Track & Field Meet were different. Finishing in the top 2 in any event at District is required to go to Regionals, and again at Regionals to compete statewide. First winning District in High Jump and Triple Jump allowed her to compete in both events at Regionals. The schedule at Regionals required that she compete in both events simultaneously proved a considerable challenge that she met with success. She walked from one event to the other to take a jump at one, and walk back to the other event to take one, walking back and forth for the duration of the competition. She placed 4th in Triple Jump, and 2nd in High Jump. The 2nd place finish at Regionals sent her to State to compete. Marissa entered the State competition ranked 8th out of 9 and finished in 1st place! With her jump of 5’6”– a new personal record, she became the only contestant at the State Meet to

clear each of her previous heights on the first try. She cleared 5’, 5’2”, 5’4” and 5’6” all on her first try. Other competitors took two or three jumps to clear each height. Each of the five remaining athletes tried three times to clear 5’8” without success and Marissa was declared State Champion! Marissa will be headed to Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the fall to pursue her higher education where she will continue to compete in track. We congratulate you on your overwhelming success! Marissa is the daughter of Rob and Lori Ellis and granddaughter of Lynn Billingsley, the late Lloyd and Georgia Foster, and the late Terry and Sharon Ellis.
