Climate control storage

by Randall Watts There are many variations of temperature controlled storage in the industry. The true definition of climate control is a unit that maintains a constant temperature of 55 to 85º year round and controls humidity. In Canyon Lake where summers sizzle, a temperature controlled unit will be air conditioned with the air dehumidified but not necessarily heated. The opposite will be true in Maine. The simple fact that climate controlled units are inside of a building with insulated ceilings is enough to provide adequate protection from the mild winters we experience. The most damaging effect on stored items is humidity. When you consider that the roof or ceiling of a regular storage unit has no insulation, when temps in summer pass 100º, the ceiling will be +150º. On a humid day, that temperature variation can cause the inside of a regular unit to sweat and form moisture on the walls and ceilings, making items not packed correctly damp. Most items placed in storage can be stored safely in a non-climate unit if those items are organized in the unit correctly. For example, tables should be stored on protective material (like a moving blanket) upside down, boxes can be stored on the underside of the table. Mattresses should be stored in mattress bags. Boxes should be uniform in size (well marked for contents) and stored two to three inches away from the wall. However, there are some items that should be stored in a climate controlled unit. Examples include musical instruments, cameras, antiques and heirlooms, leather furniture, fine art, etc.

The cost of climate control is nearly double that of regular storage. A viable alternative for a large move, where two units will be required, is to store only those items that require the more protected environment in climate control and store the remaining items in non-climate. For example, a large move that requires 400 sq. ft. of climate controlled storage could run around $340/mo, but combining non-climate and climate can reduce that by $100 every month. These are just a few considerations you’ll face when planning a move. An on-site manager can offer many hints that will make your move easier. Rather than upselling at every turn, storage options well suited to your needs is what customer satisfaction is all about.
