The historical stone-built, wall-girdled Zadar, located on a small peninsula, lives a full life to the rhythm of today. It has that peculiar harmony of traditional values and contemporary way of life. Zadar is known to have existed in the 9th century as a settlement of the Illyrian tribe of Liburnians; then it became a Roman colony; then fell under the yoke of the Byzantine Empire. Its most striking feature is the

monumental 9th-century pre-Romanesque church of St. Donatus. The Romanesque period has endowed this city with one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Croatia, that of St. Anastasia, dating from the 13th century. Also worth seeing are the Benedictine monastery with St. Mary’s church, and the church of St. Simeon. The stone-paved streets of Zadar record century upon century of history, and yet it maintains the dynamics

of a modern urban centre that continues to attract visitors with its everimproving and expanding services and facilities. Airport: Zadar, 10 km from the city centre
