BEYOND THE MINT
Due anni di aste numismatiche
CAMBI e CRIPPA Cambi & Crippa
The numismatic auctions department in the Cambi Auction House was established in 2021 with the purpose of giving passionate collectors the opportunity to acquire rare and highly sought-after lots, mainly from private collections twice a year.
This collaboration between two companies is one of a kind in Italy, and it brings together a wellknown and established organisation in the industry, Crippa Numismatica, and Cambi Auction House that implements its future-oriented approach into all fields of art. The collaboration between Crippa Numismatica, a well-known and established numismatic business, and Cambi Auction House, with its highly future-oriented business in all art sectors, is unique in Italy.
The market for numismatics is constantly growing, with coin collectors particularly interested in medieval and modern coins, coins from the pre-unification Italian states and the Kingdom of Italy. A perfect synthesis of progress and craftsmanship, ancient coins are without a doubt fascinating not only for those who collect them, but for anyone who is interested in discovering the events that marked the history of a people and the cultural, literary, and artistic journey within a country’s history. Antique coins tell the tale of collective memory and give value to the identity of a people by celebrating the figures that have influenced the course of its events and history.
Cambi and Crippa numismatic auctions attract the attention of collectors and enthusiasts of antique and rare coins from Italy and abroad, thanks to the high quality of the lots included in the catalogues and the variety that is offered.
1998 - 2023

26 YEARS OF CAMBI
Cambi Auction House was established in Genoa in 1998 and stood out on an international level ever since its first auctions. Initially focusing on ancient art auctions, its offer is currently divided into three main areas: antique, modern and luxury. Over the years, the departments of modern art and design, oriental art, jewellery and watches have experienced significant growth.
In 2004, Cambi moved its headquarters to the prestigious location that is Castello Mackenzie and started a long-lasting period of expansion and successes. Ten years later, the Auction House’s determination in establishing its prominent position on the international market led to the opening of the Milanese location in Palazzo Serbelloni in 2013. That same year, following numerous sales records, Cambi exceeded 23 million euros in turnover for the first time, becoming the leading auction house in Italy in terms of sales volume. During the second decade of the 21st century, Cambi continued to rack up national and international records within all of its twenty-six departments that span across all fields of art and collecting.
2017 saw the sale of the exceptional Tibetan sculpture Zanabazar for 4.7 million euros: The most expensive piece of art ever sold at auction in Italy. This record confirmed Cambi’s role as the leading auction house in the country with a turnover exceeding 35 million euros.
2022 was another outstanding year for Cambi, marked by an ever-growing and more diversified offer and a number of remarkable successes. For the third time in the past ten years, Cambi was the most prominent auction house in Italy, with 42 million euros turnover, and was crowned as the best auction house by the prestigious magazine Artribune.
Today, Cambi is a market leader for art and collectors in Italy, thanks to catalogues carefully curated by qualified experts and to auctions that alternate between Genoa and Milan. The participation of the most prominent Italian collectors, as well as a select international clientele, have allowed the house to close sales at recordbreaking prices and successfully hold significant house sales of full collections.

5TH Auction
In the fifth auction, no. 809, Cambi and Crippa Numismatica doubled their offer: The auction took place on 24 and 25 May 2023 with two very different sales sessions. The first day featured a comprehensive selection of coins, medals, paper money and books from all over the world and from all eras. The three main sets included an old collection of coins and medals from the Kingdom of Naples and the Two Sicilies, an incredible collection featuring over 600 medals dedicated to the history of art, literature, music and theatre, and a collection of pontifical coins and medals. The second session offered a select group of just 61 coins, collected over the course of thirty years by a distinguished collector. These exceptional items, all bearing portraits of Italian nobility, were the epitome of the art and taste of the Italian Renaissance in the numismatic field.

6A ASTA
6TH Auction
The sixth auction, no. 881, took place on 8 and 9 November 2023 and mainly represented the tastes and orientations of two distinguished collectors of the early 1900s. The first collection was started in the 1930s by a fourteen-year-old and was developed with passion for over 60 years, following the guidelines suggested by the Corpus Nummorum Italicorum. With almost 3,000 coins, this collection represented nearly all coins minted in Italy from the medieval era up until the end of the 19th century.
The second collection reflected the preferences and choices of a passionate Piedmontese entrepreneur who retraced the numismatic history of the House of Savoy with around 250 coins, from the beautiful medieval and Renaissance coinages right up to the Kingdom of Italy.
