Must Visit Sites in Oman Mutrah Souk Mutrah Souk is reputable for being the most interesting Souk in the Arab Gulf states. It features a perfect blend of the ancient and the modern, offering a choice to shoppers. Feast your eyes on the silverware, antiques, frankincense garments, toys, spices, gold and other items on display and have fun practicing your haggling skills. Best of all, you can haggle the cost of these items.

Nizwa Fort The Nizwa Fort stands as one of the Sultanate’s finest historical edifices. This unique, large earth-filled circular tower of Nizwa is built by Imam Sultan bin Saif al Yaarubi in 1668 AD. It mirrors the military engineering prowess of fortbuilders of the olden times. This formidable citadel stood strong and protected Nizwa’s abundant natural wealth from prowlers coveting it.

Nakhal Fort The 17th Century Nakhal Fort in Oman, is majestically perched on a rocky site in the foothills of the Western Hajar. This fortress commands a fantastic 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside. Nakhal is famous for its mineralladen hot springs flowing year round from the clefts in the mountain rock right around the fortress.

Ras Al Hadd “The sun rises first on Ras Al Hadd in the Arab Peninsula” A visit to Oman will not be complete without a visit to Ras Al Haad’s Turtle Reserve. Known as the “Green Turtle Habitat”, this area is located in the Wilayat of Sur in the Sharqiya region. It is the migration destination of around 6,000-13,000 turtles who make their annual journey here, from the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea and the East African Coast. This area attracts the largest number of mating turtles in Oman. Member's Guide 2012-2013

Wadi Shab The Wadi Shab is a must-see place to visit in Oman. ‘Wadi’ means ‘dry river bed’. This gully remains dry except during the rainy season where water quickly fills it up. If you’re thinking of driving in the wadis (wadi bashing), it is best to check first, for any developing thunderstorms before engaging in this activity. This is a good safety precaution to avoid the dangers of flash floods. The Wadi Shab is located just between the capital Muscat and the town of Sur and lies exactly in Niyabat, Tiwi, wilayat (province) of Sur. What’s fascinating about this wadi is that, it merges the scenic appeal of the coastal areas with that of the inland wonders. It is interesting to note that you can find at least seven pools of emerald green water surrounded by marvelous boulders, here. Of these pools, one of it is actually found inside a cave where light beautifully streams in from above. Get fascinated with the sound of echoes as you swim in this pool.

Salalah One of the things that people remember most about Salalah, the second largest town in the Sultanate of Oman, is its temperate climate. While the rest of Arabia experiences sweltering temperatures of up to 50°, Salalah averages 25°C in the locally known khareef season (from late June to early September). During this season, tourists flock to Salalah to enjoy its outstanding beauty and refreshing climate. Also with this climate, frankincense trees grow and flourish. The use of frankincense is prevalent in Oman. It is used not only for its fragrant qualities but also for its therapeutic properties like its calming effect on the nervous system. The resin on the other hand, can be used as a medicine to cure toothaches and indigestion.

Wadi Bani Ouf The Wadi Bani Ouf is found in Al Rostaq wilayat, just behind the intimidating façade of the Al Jabal al Akhdar mountains. This ancient wadi offers breathtaking vistas along its 26-kilometer trail. Mountain streams and pools plus green fields also spectacularly beset this valley making it an ideal place for 4WD drives, trekking or canyoning. As you set out to the Wadi Bani Ouf, you’ll have the chance to explore side canyons like the famous Snake Canyon/ Snake Gorge with it cool springs, splashing streams and sharp rock faces.

Wahiba Sands The Wahiba Sands is a vast desert of rolling sand dunes with colors varying from deep red to rich honey and stretching as far as the eye can see. These dunes are home to traditional Bedouins who can endure the harsh desert conditions. It also plays host to a diverse type of flora and fauna. Contact local tour guides for a more fun-filled and safe experience. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be on hand to take you out on a fantastic dune driving and allow you to visit or perhaps enjoy a hearty lunch with a Bedouin family who can give you an insight on their lifestyle..

Jabrin Castle Jabrin Castle is truly one remarkable sight. This magnificent palace is located near the mountains of Jabal Akdhar or the Green mountains. The mountain is famous for rose cultivation and production of pure rose water. Situated in such a picturesque landscape, this castle was built in 1675 by Sultan Bilaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;rab bin Sultan al-Yaarubi as a summer residence. This magnificent castle is known for its artistry and majestic look. Some of the notable attractions of this castle include painted ceilings and inscriptions of Koran verses on the walls and ceilings. Jabrin Castle has been restored to its full glory to keep its historical and artistic values.

Jebel Shams Located 280 km from Muscat, Jebel Shams is the highest mountain of the Al Hajar mountain range. Jebel Shams meaning Mountain of the Sun in Arabic is 9000 feet above the sea level. The mercury here dips to zero in winter and sometimes is followed with snowfall. Even the summers are pleasant with an average temperature of 25 degrees. This climatic condition attracts the tourist for camping and trekking. Other than the climatic conditions, the major attraction of this place is the Canyon. The canyon at Jebel Shams is said to be the second biggest after the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Oman - Visa Procedures Single Entry Visit Visa: The Ministry of Tourism has clubbed the three visa requirements in Oman such as tourist visa, business visa and short visit visa into the single Entry Visit Visa. This visa has been issued to travellers from particular countries including countries such as France, Germany, Netherlands, Russia, United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland, China, USA, Australia and many more. Upon their arrival at the major terminals of the Sultanate one is required to fill a visa application forms along with the major requirements mentioned on Oman Visa Information by the Ministry of Tourism. The fee charged for this facility is OMR 6 which can also be paid in foreign currencies. One can also obtain a single entry visa by applying to the major diplomatic missions and commercial representation offices in Oman. The Validity of this visa is one month. One can also extend the visa permit by filling the extension application form which should be submitted at the Directorate General of Passport and Residency office before the expiry date. As per the law, a fine of OMR 10 per day can be charged for after the expiry date. But visa requirements in Oman can differ from country to country. For the tourists belonging to India, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Syria the visas are issued at the main entry points either individually or as part of a group. The tourists belonging to the above mentioned countries can only enter the country if they have purchased a complete tourist voucher from specific tourist companies that have been approved by Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The package should also include the lodging facilities and the airline ticket of one of the national airlines of Oman. Multiple Entry Visa: Visa Information on Oman also includes specific details about acquiring this particular visa. One of the specific requirements is that the validity period of the applicantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passport should not be less than a year. The fee charged is OMR10 or an equal amount in foreign currencies. This visa can be acquired at the land, air and sea entry points. One can also get this visa through the diplomatic and commercial mission office in the country.

Express Visa: This particular visa is issued by the Directorate General of Passport and Residency for travellers belonging to particular countries. One can apply for an application form to the Oman commercial or tourist establishment or the diplomatic mission and commercial representation offices in their particular countries. The visa as the name suggests is issued within 24 hours. The Validity of this visa lasts for two weeks. Common Visa Facility with the Emirate of Dubai: Travellers bearing an entrance visa from the Emirate of Dubai are not required to obtain a separate visa for the Sultanate of Oman. The Entry stamp or Visa for Dubai is recognized as an entry visa to Oman also. No fees are charged for them. The bearer of this particular visa is permitted to stay for the period of the visa issued to him from the authorities in the Emirate of Dubai. These particular details on Oman Visa Information have to be remembered and followed while planning a visit to the Sultanate of Oman.

Etiquette Oman

As expats we are visitors to this beautiful country, and most of us who choose to live here enjoy a full and varied lifestyle. So is it too much to ask that we take care not to offend our hosts?

THOUGH the Omani people are undoubtedly the friendliest and most tolerant in the Gulf, Oman is an Islamic country where many customs, especially religious ones, have remain unchanged for generations. Both men and women cover their arms, legs and heads, and though they don’t expect visitors to do so, there are certain fashions that are offensive to them. Unfortunately, when foreign families come here to live they are often not given any advice about dress codes – they think ‘’Ah – sunshine!’’ and immediately get into their holiday gear of strappy tops and short shorts – definitely a no-no unless you’re at a hotel swimming pool or on a private beach. So what is appropriate attire? Generally, women should cover their shoulders and at least their upper arms, and not wear either skirts or shorts above the knee. If, however, you are visiting a mosque or other sacred place, you must cover your head too, and both men and women must remove their shoes. It’s worth noting that even with the right clothes, there are some icons considered too precious for any woman to set eyes on. Friends were banned from entering Ayub Nabi’s Tomb in Salalah, though I have heard of other more fortunate females who were permitted to see this tourist attraction. You can, of course, wear a swimsuit (preferable to a bikini) at a hotel swimming pool or private beach, but you should always cover-up when walking round the complex and especially when going to a restaurant. Restaurants outside the hotels rarely serve alcohol and the shoulders and knees rule applies.

Handy pashmina So where can you wear those short, strapless numbers? At a private party or a ball in a hotel – but when you are travelling to these places, cover up with a pashmina or wrap. It’s a good idea to always keep a pashmina in your car. There’s a tale of one woman whose vehicle broke down as she was taking her children to school – in her nightdress. I don’t know who was most embarrassed – her or the Omani gentlemen who came to her rescue! Opinions are divided about what can and cannot be worn at hotel bars in the evening, but it is generally considered that because alcohol is served, devout Muslims will give these places a miss, so dress codes aren’t adhered to. But wherever you go, it’s best to avoid clothes that are tight or overtly sexy – and if you’re unsure, this is one case when more is always best. Even in the gym, if it’s mixed, wear joggers and a loose T-shirt rather than Lycra. Most of us go out of our way to show respect for our Omani hosts – but there’s always someone who makes you cringe. As one long-term resident told us: ‘’It’s embarrassing to see fellow expats walking round in skimpy clothes. If I see someone unsuitably dressed, I go and tell them.’’ And do they appreciate the advice, we were curious to know? ‘’Sometimes they thank me because they weren’t aware – and other times they’re quite rude!’’

Ramadan During the Holy Month of Ramadan it is even more important not to offend – and this includes not eating or drinking in front of a Muslim between the hours of dawn and dusk, because they will be fasting during these times. No alcohol will be sold for the duration of Ramadan, and restaurants and coffee shops will be closed until after sunset.

Showing respect Men should never touch an Omani woman or shake hands unless she instigates it. They should always wear long trousers in a formal situation, and a shirt and tie are usually the form for business meetings, sometimes a jacket. But it’s not just the way we dress that can offend; there are gestures that are considered impolite such as pointing ones feet at things or showing the soles of the feet, and accepting

offerings with the left hand (it’s considered unclean). And never indulge in rude gestures when driving – you can be jailed. When greeting an Omani male, women should never offer their hand unless he offers his first: some, especially older men, will not shake hands with a woman. At the same time, don’t be surprised if you see two men holding hands – it is quite acceptable among Arabic men when they are related or good friends. However, you will rarely see a man and woman holding hands in public, or touching each other at all – and foreigners are expected to behave similarly. You shouldn’t kiss - and certainly not fondle - your partner in public!

Gracious hosts The Omanis are very gracious hosts and if you’re invited to dine in an Omani home, you will be served first and it’s acceptable to begin eating immediately. You may sit cross-legged on the floor in the traditional manner, though many Nationals now prefer the Western table and chairs.It is customary to take a gift, perhaps for the family’s children. If you’re offered Arabic coffee, when you’ve had sufficient, waggle your cup from side to side to indicate this or it will keep being refilled. When travelling through the country, always ask permission before you take a photograph of someone. If you’re a Westerner, you’ll be surprised how quickly you become used to wearing less revealing clothes – so much so that when you go back home, everyone seems half-dressed. This was exemplified by a friend’s son who, on returning to Wales in the summer and visiting his cousin asked ‘’Mummy, why are all the girls wearing their underwear?’’ Why, indeed! ©2012 Penny Destro

HANDY HOUSEHOLD HINTS To remove limescale from kettles: Soak in hot water and 1/3 brown vinegar. Rinse well, fill and boil water. Empty completely, rinse again. To clean mirrors: Use Air freshener – they smell nice too! To remove chewing gum from clothes etc: Stick it in the freezer, and wait for the gum to freeze. It can then be scraped off with a knife. Surface scratches on wood furniture: Fill in with appropriate shade of felt-tip. Remove stubborn dirt/scuff marks from walls and furniture: Baby wipes! Remove marks from clothes and soft furniture: Make-up remover wipes. Blisters and Boils: Soak for hour in a bath with a cup of oatmeal added to the water. It will draw out the infection and soothe the wound. Grime on glass dishes: Soak in soapy water, then scrape with the edge of a metal spoon. Rejuvenate silk flowers: Hairspray makes them shiny – any further dust can be blown off. Things dogs love to chew: Squirt with lemon juice – they don’t like it. Ants/creepy crawlies: Squirt them with a mixture of washing up liquid and water in a spray bottle. Bath-tub ring: Toothpaste works – so does rubbing with an eraser! Opening a vacuum sealed jar: Gently tap the top edge on any hard surface like a work top.

Opening screw-top bottles: Use a rubber glove – or buy a specially made circular rubber opener from Lakeland – or ask a man (who probably screwed it too tight in the first place!). To dry a wet dog: Use a chamois leather – it makes their coats soft too! The Many Uses of Baking Soda (Bicarbonate of Soda) • On a damp sponge it removes grease easily from cookers and surrounds. • To deodorize a carpet, sprinkle it before going to bed and vacuum in the morning. • Good for cleaning baths and sinks, fridges. • To clean blocked drains, pour a cup of Baking Soda down and rinse with running water. • To get rid of insects: sprinkle around cabinets and cupboards. • If you burn a saucepan put in some baking soda and soak. • To deodorize your fridge, stand a cup of baking soda on the bottom shelf. The Many uses of Alka-Seltzer… • To clean pipes: Put 3 tablets down the kitchen sink followed by a cup of white vinegar. Leave for a few minutes then run hot water. • To clean your toilet bowl: Put 4 tablets in the toilet. Leave for an hour and then brush. • To clean gold or silver jewellery: Put 1 tablet in a cup of warm water. Drop in your jewellery and leave for a few minutes. • To freshen up a thermos flask: Fill the flask with water, drop in 4 Alka-Seltzer tablets and let soak for at least an hour. • To remove the stain from the bottom of a glass vase or bottle: fill with water and drop in 2 Alka-Seltzer tablets. And Steradent… To remove burnt on food from glass oven dishes, soak them in Steradent Denture Cleaner and hot water. Member's Guide 2012-2013

Hormonal Changes in Women’s Lives Being a woman is not always an easy path when it comes to hormonal changes. As we are all aware, hormones naturally run their cycle throughout our lives, starting from menarche (onset of menses) until menopause (cessation of menses). And during this one large life cycle, we also undergo hundreds of monthly cycles throughout our lives, involving the bleeding phase, the ovulation phase, as well as the fluctuating PMS phase. Charlie The Chow We weren't looking for a dog, we had fostered a couple and walked a few rescued dog for the animal adoption agency. Back in NZ we had even, trained a guide dog for the Institute of the Blind for 15 months. We weren't looking to gain a full time dog of our own - for keeps - it would be like having another child, only one that couldn't come with you everywhere, someone to arrange alternative care during holidays and weekends away plus 3 walks a day and of course eventual repatriation!

Then Charlie came to stay...

The best laid plans - go out the window - "Mr Gorgeous" Charlie the Chow, 5 years old rescued from heat exhaustion and near death after being kept outside without adequate shelter or nutrition, and then abandoned at the vets. He needed a place to recover from the trauma short or long term. It was summer, our 15 year old son was gradually being turned into a gaming zombie and needed an alternative outlet for his attentions. We did our homework what is a Chow? - not the small handbag dog - that's a Chiuahua - a Chow is a medium sized dog with a huge main of hair and looks like a small bear or lion, in fact the Chinese name for them means "Puffy Lion!". The Chow breed is one of the oldest. These types of dogs originally were work dogs but now, apparently, they are great apartment dogs or indicaed for those of us who are more

sedentary. We offered Charlie a short term home whilst a permanent place was sought for him. Charlie had other ideas - he was perfectly happy in his new environment with his new found family, who, has to confess was won over immediately. Charlie is one of the rare finds, a gentle, placid, relaxed fellow, whose idea of excitement is a quick run in the garden with a tennis ball (5 minutes tops) followed by a huge sleep (preferably on your feet) complete with snoring. It broke my heart on the first day to see him sit in the lounge room surrounded by toys, without the energy or the inclination to play, this I hasten to add has been short lived - he now bounds about the lounge about 3 times a day in a controlled frenzy lasting 2 minutes each.

If a stranger entered our house they would be hard pushed to tell that Charlie had lived anywhere else other than here. Settled and secure he now barks when people ring the bell, well it's more of a snuff than a woof and that is on 1/2 volume (no point in getting too worked up, obviously). This is a dog who will let you put eye and ear drops in without moving a muscle until you are finished - brush and de-tangle him, for as long as you want, bath and shampoo him without a struggle - a one in a million - if we could bottle his essence for other dogs - we would be millionaires! When he first came home, you couldn't move for Charlie being under your feet, pulling at your clothes to guide you to what he wanted or wanting to help with hanging out the washing (Yes, thanks for that Charlie, just found another pair of knickers in the bushes!) And now, 2 weeks later Charlie can be found by following the dulcet tones of his snoring - usually under the dining room table - he is settled enough now, to handle separation, confident if he sleeps away from us we won't abandon him!

If Charlie could talk I am not sure I would like to hear what he'd have to say about all of us humans - but - he has decided he likes it just fine with us, and I know he would give VETERINARY ELKA AND ALL HER TEAM AT AL QURUM VET'S a mighty fine lick in gratitude for saving his life. They recognised the little gem that Charlie is and were determined to get him back into a safe home, Charlie has decided he will stay with us and adopt us as his family and we are privileged to accept his offer.

Oman is a beautiful country with varied landscape. Over the years, however, some of its beautiful nature and outdoors have been spoilt by a new phenomenon, that of reckless dumping of litter. A group founded in November 2011 hopes to change the mindset; its message is reaching a wide audience of Omanis and expatriates, young and old. The story of Clean Up Oman is a role model of how a simple idea can gain momentum to grow into a large scale movement. It began in 2011, when Omani writer and photographer, Nasser Al Kindi, sold his posters of Omani doors and mosaic arches of the Grand Mosque at bazaars, raising funds to set up a group to raise awareness 'to keep Oman beautiful.' In November of the same year he founded a group called Clean Up Oman, set up a page for it on Facebook and called for volunteers to join in a journey to 'tip the scale against reckless dumping of litter.' Just over three weeks later, the group launched its first cleanup campaign with just over 35 volunteers turning up. Not content with the turn out, the Founder called for the last Thursday of every March to be an annual nationwide Clean Up Oman Day. Sure enough, at 4pm on Thursday 29th March, 2012, nearly nine thousand people answered the call, participating in clean ups all over Oman, from Musandam in the north to Dhofar in the south. The group then went on to promote clean up campaigns and lectures in schools and universities in various parts of the country including a one month clean up and awareness campaign in Dhofar, coinciding with Salalah Tourism Festival. Today, Clean Up Oman is thought to be the most popular active environmental group in Oman and arguably the most recognised social brand in the country. Its portfolio of large scale annual clean up events includes Clean Up a School Day, Clean Up a Business Day, Clean Up a Mosque Day and Clean Up Oman Day. 'Our objective was to found the largest sustainable social initiative that complements government efforts,' says the group's founder. Through the use of social media, exhibitions, presentations, posters and lectures and talks at schools and

other institutes the group has managed to get thousands of followers and dedicated volunteers. 'We hope to enlist the assistance of over 50 thousand volunteers before the end of 2012. These would include a large base of students,' says Mr. Al Kindi, whose group has also negotiated the introduction of extra curriculum activities focusing in 2013 on students of four to five government schools, as a pilot scheme. The group has also discussed with public and private establishments the introduction of new measures to 'rationalise' the dispensing of plastic bags at large shops. With the group's mission finding cooperation of and assistance from government agencies and private establishments, the green cause is set to take a large leap forward. 'Changing the mindset is a slow process and we estimate that it would take us five years for the scale to begin to tip. But we are determined to protect Oman's ecosystem from this phenomenon,' says Al Kindi. Indeed, the group has in less than a year conducted a number of clean ups, distributed e-posters, organized an Earth Day event attended by over 500 families, launched its own electronic newsletter and conducted numerous workshops and talks at educational institutes. The group identifies everyone residing in Oman as a key stakeholder with a vital role to play but pays special emphasis on young Omanis (15 to 20 years old). The group encourages people to organise or participate in clean up activities and provides them with various forms of support.
