WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BECOME A PART OF CREIGHTON PREP? It means you’re ready to challenge yourself, and eager to meet the world head on. That you’re ready to accept the academic challenge that is the foundation of success in college and in life, while making friendships that will last far beyond your high school years. To become part of a community of young men who demand more of themselves and of each other. As you explore Prep and talk with students, alumni and faculty, there are two phrases you’ll hear frequently: “Men For Others” and “Open to Growth.” But what do they mean?

MEN FOR OTHERS Men who are dedicated to service for others, for the greater glory of God.

OPEN TO GROWTH To be welcoming of new ideas, willing to accept personal responsibility, embrace change and seek diverse experiences.

Our mission is to shape young men of faith, building on the highest ideals of a Jesuit tradition stretching back more than 450 years. Men who believe that God is calling them to something more, to a life of special significance not just for themselves but for a world that needs their leadership and service. We hope that you will want to be a part of this legacy that is a force for good in the world.

If this sounds like you, then you belong at Creighton Prep.

CAMPUS

MINISTRY PROGRAM The Jesuit schools, through an educational pedagogy, nurture spiritual growth in their students. The primary goal of a Jesuit school is a spiritual one. Academic excellence, athletic prowess and strength of character all must point toward the “purpose for which we were created; to be in union with God.” (First Principle & Foundation of the Spiritual Exercises) We dream of students who leave Prep with a firm foundation in a living faith. We provide our students with the opportunity to experience the transcendent through daily prayer, liturgies and prayer services, retreats, and service experiences. Prep students take a leadership role in Campus Ministry which creates a culture in which students are excited about being Christian leaders in our world. When students attend Creighton Prep, they become part of a vibrant faith community.

WHY PREP? •

Students have the opportunity to examine their lives in a reflective and spiritual way and to develop a personal and transforming relationship with Jesus Christ.

Prep’s retreat program has been a model for other schools throughout the country. As a testament to the power of Prep’s retreat program, 100 current juniors and seniors will serve as retreat leaders this year.

Prep students will complete over 20,000 hours of service this year. Prep’s servicelearning curriculum is unique, giving students the opportunity to complete service internships at over 35 sites in our community. Our students work with children, the homeless, refugees, people with disabilities, and the elderly.

70 students this year are part of the Campus Ministry Advisory Board (CMAB), which is the team of student leaders who help plan our daily prayer, liturgies and prayer services, retreats, and service opportunities for the student body.

Prep welcomes students of all faiths. Our non-Catholic students find their spiritual paths nurtured through the opportunities provided by Campus Ministry.

BLOCK SCHEDULING Creighton Prep utilizes block scheduling which allows for fewer, longer periods each day as compared to the more traditional high school schedule of having all classes in one day. This format gives more flexibility to the teacher to lecture, have a lab or group work on a particular lesson. Block scheduling also helps students learn how to organize and manage time while preparing them for college academic life. Creighton Prep block scheduling consists of A and B days. A days have four academic classes and a lunch period. On A days, students will have 85-minute classes with 10-minute passing periods. The B schedule is three academic classes and a community period. These classes are also 85 minutes with 10-minute passing periods. The community period is a period where students can engage with intramurals, clubs/ activities, silence sustained study, guest speakers and mass. Students will have a schedule they will follow through their house program at Prep. Prep has five houses, The Hindeling, The Auer, The Laughlin, The Niemann, and The Kanne.

ENGLISH

FINE ARTS

The English department recognizes that students and teachers are partners in the active endeavor of learning – that in the information age, clear and effective communication is vital for college readiness and that literature is a bridge to places, cultures, events and ideas. With this in mind, the English curriculum emphasizes college preparatory skills of analytical and creative thinking, intentional reading, precise communication and collaborative work.

The fine arts department is founded on the belief that art is a fundamental force in our daily lives as well as our national and international culture, and that one of the primary standards by which societies are judged is the quality, creative freedom, critical insight, and formal and technical innovation of the visual and performing art they produce.

The freshman curriculum pursues a breadth of readings from different genres. Sophomore year investigates the theme of the hero, and the junior curriculum explores American literature. Senior electives provide students with a variety of literary and composition studies as they hone their academic skills in preparation for college.

Creighton Prep fine arts provides students with the artistic training, preparation, leadership and scholarship necessary to achieve excellence in the visual and performing arts at both the high school and collegiate level. We prepare our students for success nationally as artists, musicians, designers, scholars, visual storytellers, image-makers and vocalists.

Courses also incorporate technology, presentational skills, reading and writing strategies, and vocabulary development.

MATHEMATICS

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The ability to comprehend, develop and utilize mathematical concepts is invaluable throughout life. All people need some fluency in this area in order to contribute to and fare well in our contemporary world. (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics)

The physical education department provides students with the opportunity to prepare for a lifelong healthy and active lifestyle with the goal of reflecting the same ideal as the mission of the school: the education of the whole person. With this goal in mind, we emphasize physical, intellectual and social development through student participation in physical activities, learning the principles of physical fitness and understanding the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

The Creighton Prep mathematics department strives to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of math both as a tool and a way of thinking that can be used to address problems in the world. Our mathematics department provides multiple levels from algebra through classes beyond calculus. Sequencing of courses also provides students with the opportunity to start at different levels of algebra or higher.

SCIENCE

SOCIAL STUDIES

The science department at Creighton Prep seeks to prepare students for a highly technological future by helping them learn to process and organize information, think critically and make intelligent, informed science-related decisions.

The mission of the social studies department is to develop capable citizens who are empowered with knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable them to make informed decisions in a culturally diverse and interdependent world.

We want to share with students a systematic approach to exploring the scientific aspects of the world in which they live, apply the scientific method and prepare them for college science courses through classes designed to provide the requisite scientific concepts, fundamental principles and laboratory experiences.

As human beings we are social creatures and must learn how to live with others in democratic societies in which the education and participation of its citizens is crucial to its vitality. In a constantly evolving society, its citizens must be able to adapt its values and culture to changing circumstances. The social studies curriculum, with its combination of core and elective, social science and humanities courses, provides both the knowledge and involvement in civic affairs. Regardless of one’s career path or vocation, Prep students must be able to understand and address the issues and concerns common to all.

THEOLOGY

ToMorrow LABS

The theology department responds to God’s invitation to share with students the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, as lived through the Christian, Catholic and Ignatian traditions.

Creighton Prep’s ToMorrow Labs is a state-of-of-the-art center for self-directed learning, helping students develop a wide variety of skills in design technology and innovation, and giving them the power to think creatively in today’s global and technologically-oriented society.

With the Gospel message as our foundation, we endeavor to open ourselves and our students to the Divine Love that is found in all things, including our graced yet broken world. We hope to educate young men as leaders, for and with others, within a community of disciples who actively witness to a faith that does justice. Following in the tradition of St. Ignatius of Loyola, we strive to form young men with discerning spirits who, while growing in awareness of their gifts, always seek the greater glory of God. Courses in the theology department are designed to offer content, substance and context to the religious beliefs and experiences of each student while imparting valuable cultural and historical literacy. Attempting to embody St. Anselm’s ideal that theology is “faith seeking understanding,” courses focus on both academic study and personal appropriation of theological material.

WHY PREP?

WORLD

STUDENT

We believe that the study of a language other than one’s own native language is the most direct means to expose students to diverse cultures short of actually living in those cultures.

Based on the Jesuit core value of cura personalis or “care for the whole person,” Creighton Prep now offers an expanded and comprehensive student support services program. These specialized support services will help students succeed in the classroom, help students and families navigate the college admissions and scholarship processes, and help Prep meet a wider range of students’ emotional, psychological, social and socioeconomic needs.

LANGUAGES As a department, it’s our task to guide students to both an appreciation of the differences in the world views of those who speak or spoke languages other than English and to an understanding of the role language plays in shaping our thoughts and values. We also explore the inherent limitations of any one language to adequately express human ideas and emotions. In Spanish and French we achieve these ends by helping students improve their ability to speak, listen, read and write the target language. In Latin, since no one today communicates in oral Latin as a native language, we focus on teaching students to read the language, along with a secondary focus on writing so they can read the actual words of those who used Latin as a primary means of communication. Our students can then benefit from a first-hand exposure to over 2,000 years of cultures that advanced world knowledge through Latin.

WHY PREP?

12

All of Prep’s language teachers have extensive international experience that has come through traveling, living and studying abroad.

In the Prep language classroom, students will be exposed each day to authentic language taught by extraordinary teachers who are experts in their language.

All of Prep’s language students take national exams in each year of their language experience to ensure that they are meeting the requirements of state and national standards in language learning.

SUPPORT SERVICES CURA PERSONALIS TEAM Learning Specialist Supports students with learning differences and their families and assists in executing accommodation plans. Academic Coach Helps students who need guidance establishing goals, routines, behaviors and habits of mind that are required for successful independent learning at Prep. Licensed Mental Health Professional Assists students and parents with emotional and behavioral concerns and provides individualized mental health counseling, group sessions, drug and alcohol education and counseling, suicide awareness and prevention, and addresses other topics relevant to adolescent psychological development. Director of Outreach and Advocacy Guides students and their families with any special socioeconomic or cultural needs that might prevent them from reaching their full potential at Prep through finding resources to meet their unique needs.

Five Guidance Counselors Provide regular support with course selection and scheduling, personal development, academic support, career and college planning, and social and emotional counseling. Director of College Counseling Works with the guidance counselors to provide students and parents with specialized expertise and insight into the college admissions process.

PREP

DINING

St. Ignatius called his followers to live in the world, and to meet people where they are. We recognize that the world we live in is a technological one, and that our students use their devices as one of their primary means of communication. We need to prepare our students for learning and working in this digital information world. Given this world, Creighton Preparatory School implemented a 1:1 iPad Program during the 2015-2016 school year.

As part of the Creighton Prep health and wellness initiative, we provide a full lunch menu to all students on a daily basis, including a wide variety of fresh, healthy foods and different portion sizes, and students can return for seconds or more if they like. They choose from a daily entrée, sandwiches, soups, salad bar, fruit, plain or chocolate milk and juices.

TECHNOLOGY Our students will have the best chance of being “transformational leaders” if their existing technological skills are integrated with a morally and intellectually rigorous Catholic Jesuit education. We believe that properly used technology is part of our Jesuit mission, but we also know that it will never replace our core values. We will continue to teach students to engage in deep reflection, to think critically, to solve problems and to express themselves with grace—and to do so within a caring community. We continue to value the spiritual character of our school and the interpersonal relationships that are the hallmark of Jesuit education. At times, that will require that all devices be put away so that students and faculty can engage in quiet contemplation and personal relationships. When it is time to put the screens down, we will.

PROGRAM Recently the food service offering has been expanded to include breakfast and snacks at an additional cost. The dining staff will work with students and families to accommodate and serve students with food allergies and dietary restrictions.

We understand that technology can give our students significant freedoms, and we hope to teach them the responsible use of that freedom. We believe the use of iPads will enhance both teaching and student learning, and will expand the possibilities for creativity, collaboration and exploration.
