A n In t rod u c t i o n t o t he L eag u e o f NH C rafts me n For over 85 years, the nonprofit League of NH Craftsmen has promoted fine craft, supported craftspeople, and educated and enriched New Hampshire’s communities. Visitors shop in our eight fine craft galleries that feature outstanding hand-made craft and wide-ranging educational programs such as classes, demonstrations and workshops that are open to people of all ages and skill levels. Throughout its history, the League has helped craftspeople hone their skills, sell their work, and generate income. More than 750 juried craftspeople produce exceptional contemporary and traditional craft in a wide range of media areas. The League’s story begins in the mid-1920s when Mrs. Mary Coolidge and A. Cooper Ballentine joined forces to promote craft in New Hampshire. By 1932, The League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts had been established, and the first official League shop was opened in Wolfeboro. The following year, the first Craftsmen’s Fair was held, making it the oldest outdoor craft fair in the country. Rebranded as the League of NH Craftsmen in 1968, the League is recognized today as one of the country’s foremost fine arts organizations, setting the standard for fine hand crafts — made right here — that are valued throughout the United States and around the world for their creativity, authenticity and technical expertise.

DEMO / SALES BOOTHS Demo/Sales: Learn from the craftsmen! The Demo/Sales booths allow space for the craftsmen to demonstrate how they create their craft. These booths also have a sales area so you may purchase the fine craft you have learned about and seen made. The Demo/Sales booths are marked on the map - Tents D, E, I, H, Q, R, S and X. Potters Maureen Mills & Steven Zoldak: Tent D Maureen and Steve will demonstrate throwing on a potter’s wheel both functional and decorative stoneware with beautiful finishing techniques. Watch as they do their specialty surface decorations in a variety of methods, including their slip trailing technique. Wood Carving with Aaron Clapp: Tent E Learn how Aaron finds and selects wood from natural sources and how he prepares the wood for spoon making. From roughing it with an ax, to refining the shape with special tools. Drying and preparing the spoon for final surfacing and polishing will also be demonstrated. Lampwork with Lulu Fichter: Tent H Watch closely and be mesmerized as Lulu makes lampworked glass beads out of molten glass. Learn the process and help by suggesting color combinations. Raku Pots with Richard Foye: Tent I Be amazed as pre-fired pots are heated to 1600 degrees! Various combustibles will be added to cause crackle smoked effects and metallic luster. The finished piece will be displayed and the results explained. Folk Art with Art Anderson: Tent Q Art Anderson, a folk artist who works in wood, invites children to make a simple, wooden toy that they will take home. The process is simple; tailored to youngster’s abilities. Parents are encouraged to participate. The tent is free, and best of all, fun. Printmaking with R.P. Hale: Tent R Watch as a 5th Generation Printmaker uses an 18th-century printer, making editions from wood-engraved blocks, and incorporating hand-set type. R.P. will be in period garb to enhance the experience. Furniture with Eric Johnson: Tent S Join Eric as he builds furniture while you watch. He will be using hand planes and saws, both to dimension wood and craft traditional joints such as dovetail mortise and tenon. Didjeridu with Steven Bachman: Tent X Listen to the beautiful sounds of these handmade, contemporary expressions of traditional instruments. Come closer and learn about the origin, crafting and how to play. Maybe even play some music of your own on a smaller version! Steven provides instruction daily at 1:30 p.m.

“I've been demonstrating my crafts in public for decades with equipment and tools that were handed down to me over five generations. I do this not only to show how things were done "back in the day," but to emphasize the importance of traditional methods that are still used to painstakingly hand-make things in this day and age. As a steward of my crafts, it is equally important to me to pass them down to the next generations, which is why I mentor apprentices.” R.P. Hale

Did you know craftsmen do demos throughout the year at our statewide galleries as well as our League headquarters in Concord?

The Shop at the fair The Shop at the Fair is a cooperative shop operated by members of the League of NH Craftsmen. This tent features work from our craftsmen, many of whom do not have a booth at the Fair. Enjoy shopping for a great variety of craft at this beautifully laid out shop. 2018 ANNUAL ORNAMENT

Peace

Created by Sibel Alpaslan This is the League’s 31st Annual Ornament. Give as a gift or add it to your collection.

The League of NH Craftsmen’s 2018 Annual Ornament, Peace, is hand-made using porcelain and stoneware by juried member Sibel Alpaslan. She was inspired by the symbolic meaning of a dove – love, promise, and hope. This ornament is currently the only Annual Ornament to have ever been made out of clay. Not suitable as a toy or for children under four.

$24.50 The League of NH Craftsmen’s Fair always starts the first Saturday in August. See you next year: August 3 - 11
