BTEC NATIONAL SUBSIDIARY DIPLOMA LEVEL 3 MUSIC TECHNOLOGY (Production) UNIT 9: Delivering a Music Product Summary of Learning Outcomes: 1 Know how to plan and set up recording sessions that encompass a variety of techniques 2 Be able to undertake a range of roles in the recording and production of contrasting multi-track material 3 Be able to complete effective stereo mixes of the multi-track recordings 4 Be able to edit and master the material. Context Scenario: You are part of a Production Team commissioned to produce new music for a start-up record label. Each Producer needs to submit a 15min Mastered CD of the work music that they have worked on. You should aim to participate in a variety of roles including Producer, Recording Engineer, Assistant Engineer and Musician. Assignments Summary Assignment 1 – Plan and Record. LO1 (P1M1D1) LO2 (P2M2D2) Produce a planning portfolio for a series of recording sessions. Your plans will be posted as blogs on tumblr and for each track you will include: Role Allocation: Who will do what. Production Schedule: times for planning meetings, rehearsals, recording sessions, overdubs, mixing and mastering. Recording Session Schedule: Placing Mics, Routing Cables, Setting up Headphones, Setting Levels, Rhythm Section, Vocals, Over dubs. Studio Diagram: where the mics/screens/musicians/instruments will be placed with evidence of the reasons Track List: Routing, mic choice/placement (reasons), Headphone mix info. The Session: Document the session with photos/videos of the set up, and a review of the process- did it go to plan, what issues arose and how were they solved, did the team work well? Include feedback from peers and tutor. Assignment 2 – Mixing LO3 (P3M3D3) . Mixing should be done in Logic X and a variety of monitoring environments should be used to check the mix. In you mixes you should seek to address the following: level balance; tonal range; stereo image; clarity; control of dynamics; processing eg reverb, chorus, echo, auto-tuning, normalising, harmonising; control of dynamics eg gating, compression, limiting; Post a Rough Mix on your blog for feedback from the group with screen shots of your settings. Add feedback to your blog. Post a Final Mix of each track on your blog with screen shots of your settings.
