They proved to us that they will stay strong through these hardships to protect everyone they can in their power from this deadly virus. Pandemics have always come up with various life-threatening issues. COVID-19 outbreak came up with the same issues along with certain other problems involving public, administrative and healthcare sector concerns. CHARACTER Building
Minu Mathew
Third year BSc Nursing

uilding good character is all about addition, what I mean is this-when it comes to change, our focus is usually on the aspects of our lives that are bad. We try to cut off negative or bad qualities in our life. Character building is most effective, when we regularly see and seize opportunities. Truthfulness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship etc are six pillars of character. It should be active and involve the child in real decision-making that has real consequences. According to Abraham Lincoln" Character is like a tree and reputation is like it's shadow". The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing. If wealth is lost, nothing is lost If health is lost, something is lost If character is lost, everything is lost. The essential thing is not knowledge, but character. The young people of today have forgotten the importance of this old saying but it is as true today as it was in the past and it shines as gold in the dark clouds of modern thinking. Most people regard money as the sole yardstick of their life, but no money is sufficient. Character is doing the right thing because it is right to do what is right. Character is the mental
PCON FLOS FLOR 2020

and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. Character is the foundation for all true success. A person may have money, position or power, but unless he has good character he or she is not considered to be truly successful. Our character guides our responses to any situation or circumstances in our life. Character is the most important parameter in the success of life. If you have no character, you can never be happy and successful. One of the easy and excellent methods of developing good character is the study and imitation of the noble character of epic and history and knowledge of bad character to avoid their deeds. Character is a powerful weapon which provides strength and courage to one who wields it. Dreams are the touchstone of our character. Character in life is what makes people believe in you and is essential, both for individual success and our society to function successfully. " Watch your thoughts; they become words: "Watch your words; they become actions: Watch your action; they become habit: Watch your habit; they become character: Watch your character; it becomes your destiny"

TRIBUTE TO
NURSES
T
he World Health Organization declared 2020 to be the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife” in celebration of the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale (1820– 1910). Across the globe many organizations, professional associations, health care systems and other entities were poised to affirm this theme and celebrate the many roles and contributions of nurses in advancing the health and welfare of people in every nation. “As you know, during the COVID-19, they're in the front line and they're risking their lives to save others, but not only during COVID-19," said the WHO Chief, adding that "nurses are a bridge between the health system and the community and they have been doing so ever since the nursing profession actually started. So, our greatest respect and appreciation from WHO to Nurses all over the world.” Nurses’ contributions to improve the public’s health during times of crisis dates back to the days of Nightingale, modern nursing’s founder. In 1918 during the disastrous influenza pandemic, nurses were steadfast in modeling the teachings of Nightingale, a staunch supporter of good handwashing, proper sanitation and sound preventive measures. Nurses were vigilant in promoting the benefits of being exposed to fresh air, practicing good hand hygiene and maintaining social isolation while conducting home visits to patients.

From providing direct care to affected hospitalized patients to leading full scale public health operations, nurses are front and center working around the clock to protect the health and well-being of patients and the public at large. While public health nurses have traditionally been recognized for their efforts during times of a public health crisis, now nurses in acute care settings are applying evidence-informed public health principles to prevent disease and care for some of the world’s sickest hospitalized patients. Today’s nurses are leading response teams demonstrating skill and expertise in areas such as disaster preparedness, predictive modeling, hospital and field operations, and human resource management. While the COVID-19 crisis will eventually pass, nurses - nationwide and around the globe - will continue to fight valiantly and with dignity to protect and respect the rights and safety of their patients. Strong ethical principles form the foundation of nurses’ career conduct and focus them on selflessly protecting the sick, the injured, and the vulnerable. Nurses are led by an empathetic energy to work long hours every day at healthcare facilities, to improve the health of others. Nurses are going beyond the call of duty and putting themselves at significant risk to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hospitals and testing sites operate as battlefields without the necessary ammunition to eradicate the Coronavirus. Nurses fully understand the sacrifices they make by showing up to work, but with genuine kind hearted concern for the well- being of others, they continue to wage war against the COVID-19 virus. While the COVID-19 crisis will eventually pass, nurses nationwide and around the globe - will continue to fight valiantly and with dignity to protect and respect the rights and safety of their patients. strong ethical principles form the foundation of nurses' career conduct and focus them on selflessly protecting the sick, the injured, and the vulnerable. Nurses are Ied by an empathetic energy to work long hours every day at healthcare facilities, to improve the health of others.

As the sun falls to an end But the moment the moon Rises to a beginning As people die but another is born As a risk that we take to remember one another As we move on our hearts are strong But our weapons are weak. For now we live with the peace of love. Was the past, but now? Now we’re looking at the future And we see a new era.

This is the time to be slow, We may be young or old, But we must be bold, Against the enemy untold. Until the bitter weather passes. Try, as best you can, not to let The wire brush of doubt Scrape from your heart, All sense of yourself And your hesitant light. We can’t go to malls, Nor can we go to waterfalls, Because this virus is a-scaring, Sending our spines into a shivering. If you have to go out, think twice, Wear your mask, be wise. After coming home, sanitise, And wash your hands thrice. COVID-19 is the name, It is playing a hide-and-seek game. By following the rules, we can ensure endgame. If you remain generous, Time will come good; And you will find your feet Again on fresh pastures of promise, Where the air will be kind And blushed at the beginning.

Rain…. The shower of joy The shower of blessings Which falls upon us and The green earth with trees Trees which long for a shower Plants which long for a drop Flowers which long for a trickle Will be now filled. The bond which binds two lovers The bond which binds two strangers The raindrops binds the gap between them Every drop counts on Everyone who wants To feel the joy of the rain The rain falls on them all.

NOBLE INTENTION FOR A
The Covid pandemic is a challenge in more ways than one. All the doctors, nurses and the supporting staff are playing their roles to perfection, while making sacrifices at many levels, including at work and at home. At the hospital, team work, coordination, precautions and vaccination are the key factors which help us to tide over the difficult situation and continue to provide care to our patients. Hope we will all have better days soon…
Dr. Sajan Ahamed (Cardiologist,PIMS)
As a doctor and a homemaker, I have still not coped with Covid pandemic. Covid OPDs and Covid duties have made me anxious whether I will catch the disease or will I give it to my family. But our profession is to serve the sick and we just carry on our duty and fight with all our physical and emotional strength against this dreadful disease. Hoping that Our Almighty God will protect and guide us throughout this time and the times to come.
Dr. Mitra (ENT specialist) PCON FLOS FLOR 2020

Initially it was very difficult for all of us to carry out covid duty, especially in personal protective equipments. But within a very short time, we realized our responsibilities and roles to protect our patients, and we started to fight against this deadly virus. Sometimes we feel both physically and mentally exhausted, but when we see the patients struggling, we forget all about our tiredness and regain our strength to care for them. Feeling proud to be a nurse especially during this pandemic.
Mrs. Sheba Sijo (Staff nurse, PIMS)
“I worked at the hospital during the pandemic and I did whatever I could do in my capacity to help. At the entrance, thermal temperature was monitored frequently. Sometimes some patients came and were confused about where to go and I helped them in the right direction. I also made sure that the hospital was safe for the patients.”
Mr. Vasudevan Nair (Security, PIMS)
“During the pandemic we had to make sure that the surroundings were clean and tidy to prevent further Infections. Even though my job is small, I got to do my part to help the society during this pandemic.”

I stand behind these walls, Eyes shut and hands chained My mind is frozen. I saw a lovely garden, with bright and beautiful flowers There was a freshness of life. Ann Maria Johns 1st year bsc nursing
There I made the castle of my dreams, wishing to be there forever And to reach the zenith of happiness. But suddenly darkness covered me, engulfing the beautiful garden I was left all alone. Behind these dilapidated walls, hopeless and pathless I screamed There was none to hear me. So I hugged these walls and hoped they would wipe my tears.

The EMPATHY TRAP
Ann Maria Johns
1st year BSc Nursing
When we decide to help others, its very easy to fall into the trap of carrying their burden for them. So its is important to realize that supporting someone through their pain is not the same as suffering with them, or even worse, suffering for them. Despite that, sometimes we may feel that we need to exaggerate ones empathy to a degree that will help them feel that they’re not alone in the land of misery. The problem with this strategy is that by allowing ourselves to step into their reality, we are rendering ourselves temporarily reconciled and as a result, we lose the opportunity to help.

But... It's the New Beginning Sindoora P.P 3rd year
Covid -19........... Much discussed name these days.. The world was changed Hugs and kisses became weapon Staying apart is what to be happen Show the love from distance On the road, no one is found Don't mingle, always be single When carelessness increases, population decreases.. This is the time to be with self. The world has stopped But the clock is still ticking It may seem like the end.. But it's the new beginning..

We were clay in a paddy field when we first came to Pushpagiri. We went through a moulding process throughout out college life and it definitely wasn't easy, but we never gave up. We will always take pride to be a pushpagirian. Thank you for everything, Pushpagiri!
