MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER OF QUEENSLAND I would like to extend my best wishes to the members of the Toowoomba Malayali Association (TMA) upon the publication of your magazine, Smiles 2021. For the more than 8000 Malayali people who reside in Queensland, community organisations like the TMA play an important role, bridging the cultural divide between Queensland and Kerala. The Toowoomba Malayali Association has shown a resilient and exuberant spirit through the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), engaging its more than 500 members in sporting events, a gardening competition and a virtual talent festival. It is particularly encouraging to see Malayali volunteers teaching a younger generation the Malayalam language – one of the more than 180 languages spoken in Queensland! And through your ongoing support of vulnerable community members and fundraising for worthy causes including Cancer Council Queensland, you have demonstrated kindness, generosity and care. On a foundation of tradition and friendship, the TMA has made a significant contribution to diversity and harmony in Toowoomba since its formation in 2014. My Government recognises the strength in diversity and through our Multicultural Queensland Charter, we promote inclusivity, equality and fairness for people from all cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds. In 2021, we are investing in a record number of multicultural events through our Celebrating Multicultural Queensland program, including the Malayalee Association of Queensland Multicultural Festival and the Brisbane Holi – Festival of Colours. What’s new... Revised & structured curriculum: our classes are based on sessions for writing, listening, reading & speaking (15 minutes each). Skill Workshops in each term- run by experts from external agencies. Language based practice sessions for kids who are interested in participating our cultural programs such as drama, skit or poetry presentation. Staffing: Our teachers will be in a casual pool roster which is hoping to bring more opportunities and flexibility in the area of teaching and learning.
