The Barbados High Commission sent a representative and proud Barbadians from Crawley and London stopped by to enjoy the day.

parkrun is a free, weekly 5km timed run for people of all abilities planned for Tilgate Park in June 2012. To make parkrun happen, a bank of dedicated volunteers are needed to sign in runners and marshal the route. Crawley Wellbeing secured funding to set up a volunteer reward scheme in conjunction with Crawley Athletic Club (AC). Every time someone volunteers at parkrun Crawley AC is awarded a point (£2.00) which can be redeemed by the club to send a volunteer on a athletics coaching course or buy essential athletic equipment.

Building a legacy As well as providing opportunities for people to get involved in sports and the arts, Crawley in Motion also provides funding to projects organised by voluntary organisations and community groups. Many of these projects will span much further than 2012 and will provide a legacy for the project. Here are details of some of the projects Crawley in Motion has supported so far… Crawley Hockey Leadership Award The Crawley and Horley Hockey Development Scheme received funding to provide a leadership award course for a group of secondary school-aged hockey players to deliver hockey coaching sessions in Crawley primary schools. So far, 17 young hockey players from Hazelwick School, Three Bridges have received training from their PE teacher, Hedi Menniss to gain their hockey leadership award certificate. The leadership award course involves being trained in the fundamentals of coaching, umpiring and leadership and it is hoped that many of them will go on to obtain the level 1 coaching and/or level 1 umpiring awards.

The Big Draw – Action Figures Ginger Moo Gallery received funding for a day of activities at K2 Crawley to merge arts and sports called ‘Action Figures’. 150 took part in the day and were later joined by Jade Nichols, Crawley’s discus Olympic hopeful. Adults and children were invited to draw on the squash court glass, act out sporting moves behind a canvass to create moving silhouettes and use clubs, racquets, balls and hockey sticks to strike a pose on large sheets of paper as their friends drew around them. Jade said: “I had a great day doing all sorts of weird and wonderful things! It’s been really good to see such a pro-active link between sport and art.”
