FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are A Levels for? Our A Levels are aimed at anyone who wants to go on to Higher Education, needs Level 3 qualifications for employment, or wants to study a subject in depth. How many A Levels do people study? Most students take 4 subjects at AS Level and then specialise in 3 subjects at A2 Level. If you do 3 AS Level subjects then you will also study a Level 2 Extended Project. Is the fourth AS Level worth anything, if you don’t complete the full A Level? Yes. The AS Level is a distinct qualification, worth ½ an A Level and UCAS points. What are UCAS points? Universities and Higher Education institutions make offers based on UCAS points. A full A Level at grade A is worth 120 points, at AS Level it is worth 60 points.

What do I have to do to get an A*? In order to get an A* you have to get an A overall for your A Level, and score 90% or more of the total A2 marks available on each unit. It is awarded for full A Levels only, not for AS Levels or for individual units. How do I apply to do A Levels at Craven College? You fill in the application form from this directory or apply online at www.craven-college.ac.uk You will then be invited to an interview to discuss your course choices, develop a provisional timetable and answer any questions. The course I wanted to do isn’t listed, what can I do? The range of subjects we offer is regularly updated. Please check with Central Admissions or the A Level Co-ordinator if a subject is not listed.

A Level Courses To study A Levels at Craven College you will require 5 GCSEs, A*-C. Equivalent level qualifications such as BTECs are accepted, but the 5 A*-Cs (or equivalents) must come from at least four subject areas. These must include English and Maths at A*-C. Alongside these general entry qualifications, each subject has its own subject–specific entry requirements which are included in this directory and may require an initial assessment. If you achieve grade D and above at AS Level, you may continue onto the A2 Level programme with three A2 Level subjects.

If you have studied a subject at GCSE, you must have achieved at least grade C in order to study it at A Level; some individual subjects will require a grade B (see individual subject entry requirements). If you are changing centres to continue with A2 Level study at Craven College you must have achieved at least a grade C at AS Level. Proof of certification is required, and the subject tutor will need to confirm that our A2 programme is compatible with your AS qualification.

Science & Maths For Sciences and Maths courses entry is subject to achieving 45 points on the Student Achievement Tracker which measures the progression in qualifications of 16–19 year olds based on their prior attainment. This is a national system that uses GCSE results to predict A Level achievement and will be discussed with you at interview. This allows us to predict the suitability of the course for you.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

Full–time A Levels are normally allocated 4½ hours per week unless there are small numbers, in which case the hours will be reduced accordingly, (however, this means that there will be a more beneficial tutor to student ratio). Classes with very low numbers will not run.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there different Levels of Apprenticeships? There are 3 different Levels available; Apprenticeship, Advanced Apprenticeship & Higher Apprenticeship. We can help you choose the right one for you based on your experience and job opportunities in your chosen area.

Will I need a CV? Yes – a CV with details of your education, qualifications to-date, work experience (paid or voluntary) and other relevant skills or experience. Your Apprenticeship Co-ordinator will help you with your CV and help you prepare for interview.

Am I too old to be an Apprentice? Apprentices over the age of 19 may require an employer contribution. Anyone over the age of 25 may be an Apprentice but the employer will be required to contribute towards the cost of training. If you are unsure if you could be eligible please contact us to find out.

Who can be an Apprentice? Anyone over 16 can apply but offers are subject to being eligible for funding. You must be employed within the same industry as your chosen Apprenticeship and be working at least 30hrs/week (can include time spent in training). You must be an EU citizen/resident in the UK for at least 3 years and not hold a higher qualification for example a Degree, and in some cases, depending on age, other Level 2 or 3 qualifications in the same industry sector.

Do I need to be employed when starting my Apprenticeship? Yes. If you already have a job, you may already be eligible for an Apprenticeship or you may be looking for a job. We can help you to successfully locate employment then provide the training necessary for the Apprenticeship.

How do I get started on an Apprenticeship? You’ll need to think carefully about the field of work in which you want to train. Discuss your ideas and interests with your parents or careers adviser then you can contact us for more information and a chat about opportunities available.

How long do Apprenticeships take? There is no set time to complete an Apprenticeship as they vary widely in content and size. The length of time taken will depend on your ability, prior experience and your employer’s requirements. An Apprenticeship will usually take anything from 12-24 months at Level 2 and a Direct Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship could take up to 3 years.

Can I progress on to Further or Higher Education? Most Apprenticeships offer a potential progression from Level 2 to a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship and in some instances you could progress onto a Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship if available. There is also the option to do other industry qualifications or go into Higher Education.

How much will I get paid? You will be guaranteed at least the National Minimum Apprenticeship Wage (as of 1 October 2012) of £2.65/hr. Many employers pay more based on experience. 50

What qualifications do I get when I’ve finished my Apprenticeship? You’ll get a package of qualifications – normally an Apprenticeship involves a Diploma/Certificate and sometimes an NVQ. These qualifications demonstrate your knowledge and practical competency. You will also leave with Functional Skills at an appropriate Level. Any Apprentice can choose additional courses or qualifications that complement their learning (subject to discussion with the College).

To study an Apprenticeship at Craven College you ideally will require 3 GCSEs A*-D. Alongside these general entry qualifications, each Apprenticeship may have its own specific entry requirements which are included on the following pages with each Apprenticeship.

You will need to be aware of your responsibilities to both yourself and the company who employs you. You will need to be committed and willing to work. “I came to this course with a view to developing my lifelong interest in animals, their welfare and care. The unique and extensive Craven College Animal Unit gave me the opportunity to do this - backed up by experienced, professional tuition. My work experience placement at a veterinary hospital combined excellently with the Animal Biology, Animal Health and Welfare units on the course to give context and meaning to the theory and therefore learn more effectively.
