CRAIN’S CLEVELAND BUSINESS

INSIDETHELIST

V

arious statistical measures for Northeast Ohio’s largest credit unions reflected the economy’s modest recovery in 2012. The 10 largest credit unions on this year’s Crain’s list, ranked by assets as of Dec. 31, 2012, totaled $2.584 billion in assets. That represented an increase of 5.3% from assets of $2.454 billion for the 10 largest credit unions on last year’s list, measuring assets as of Dec. 31, 2011. Nine of the top 10 on this year’s list were on last year’s list, mostly in the same order. The lone addition to the top 10 this year was VacationLand Federal Credit Union in Sandusky, which rose to No. 10 from No. 12 on the previous year’s list. Its assets increased 6%, to $147.7 million as of Dec. 31, 2012, from $139.3 million on Dec. 31, 2011. Dropping out of the top 10 was Lormet Community Federal Credit Union in Amherst, where assets rose but at a slower rate, to $146.9 million from $145.7 million. The top 10 on this year’s list also made progress in attracting more members. Those credit unions had 273,973 members as of Dec. 31, 2012, up about 1.5% from 269,928 members the prior year. Leading the way in the membership gain was CSE Federal Credit Union in Canton, which for this year’s list reported 34,314 members, up 16.5% from 29,443 members on last year’s list. CSE is open to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Stark County. By the value of loans outstanding, activity also has picked up at the top 10 credit unions. On this year’s list, the top 10 had a total of $1.567 billion in loans outstanding, up 11.3% from 1.409 billion in loans outstanding for the prior year. While last year’s list had only five credit unions with loans outstanding in excess of $100 million — Seven Seventeen Credit Union in Warren, Century Federal Credit Union in Cleveland, GenFed Financial Credit Union in Akron, Firefighters Community Credit Union in Cleveland and CSE — this year’s list included those five and one addition: Cardinal Community Credit Union in Mentor. Cardinal’s loans outstanding rose about 25%, to $117.9 million as of Dec. 31, 2012, from $94.3 million as of Dec. 31, 2011. Here are a couple other tidbits related to the list: ■ Changes in asset levels were most pronounced at the top of the list. Three of the four largest percentage increases in assets were from credit unions in the top 10: CSE (up 15.3%), Cardinal (up 9.5%) and Firefighters (up 8.7%). Lakeview Federal Credit Union in Ashtabula, No. 21 on this year’s list, saw assets rise 9% to $86.3 million from $79.2 million as of Dec. 31, 2012. ■ Among the top 10 credit unions on this year’s list, three have new CEOs since last year’s list: Sharon Churchill at Century Federal, Todd Turner at Ohio Catholic Federal Credit Union and Bryan P. Myers and VacationLand. — Scott Suttell
