ig law firms, Fortune magazine said in a story in June, “have a shrinkage problem,” one that’s “stoked by the turbulent economy, technology’s encroachment and newly budget-conscious corporations.” A look at this year’s Crain’s list of largest law firms, ranked by the number of local attorneys, compared with the list from five years ago, confirms that shrinkage has set in among Northeast Ohio’s legal giants. Five years ago, the 10 largest firms on the list employed 1,396 local attorneys as of June 1, 2008. This year, though, the 10 largest firms employed just 1,254 attorneys as of June 1, 2013 — a drop of more than 10%. There were five Northeast Ohio firms in 2008 that had at least 150 local attorneys: Jones Day (236 then); BakerHostetler (183); Calfee, Halter & Griswold (156); Squire, Sanders & Dempsey LLP (155) and Thompson Hine LLP (150). Now, only Jones Day and Baker are above the 150-attorney mark locally, and both are down from five years ago — Jones Day to 211 attorneys from 236, and BakerHostetler to 179 from 183. Calfee’s ranks locally have shrunk to 133 attorneys from 156 in June 2008. Squire’s drop is even sharper, to 120 attorneys locally now from 155 five years ago.
