CRAIN’S CLEVELAND BUSINESS
And the state of Ohio has 8,074 FTEs here, up 3.7% from 7,784 here on June 30, 2008. (Though statewide, the state’s employment is down considerably, to 48,342 now from 60,702 five years ago.) ■ The largest non-health care, private-sector employer in Northeast Ohio remains a company that’s not based here — Pittsburgh’s Giant Eagle Inc. It has 9,800 FTEs, up a little more than 11% from 8,800 five years ago. ■ Five of the 10 largest employers on this year’s list actually cut local employment in the past year, led by Progressive Corp., which trimmed its Northeast Ohio work force by nearly 10%, to 7,895 FTEs on June 30, 2013, from 8,766 on June 30, 2012. The biggest gainer in the past year: The Cleveland Metropolitan School District, with FTEs up more than 10% to 6,875. Among private-sector employers, the biggest gainer since June 30, 2012, was Group Management Services Inc., a professional employer organization based in Richfield, which grew FTEs by 9.6% to 8,113. ■ Northeast Ohio has a reputation as an industrial region, and it is, but it gets that reputation to a large extent due to its large number of small and midsize manufacturing companies. Among the region’s 20 largest employers, only two are manufacturers — automaker General Motors Co. (No. 13 with 6,000 FTEs) and steelmaker Timken Co. of Canton (No. 19 with 4,525). — Scott Suttell
