Dual Force Drag For extremely smooth and strong drag outputs, Okuma’s Makaira and Cedors lever drags are designed with a patented Dual Force Drag system. This drag system is specifically engineered to be mounted in the right side of the spool, designed around a Pull Bar Drag System which keeps all mechanical workings in precise alignment and places no pressure on the frame. This system works in conjunction with a custom designed thrust bearing, which alleviates side load at heavy drag settings.

Crossover Construction

The Tension Spool Control knob is a small secondary carbon fiber drag system that incorporates an additional one-way clutch bearing that applies pressure to the spool in one direction. This allows baits to be dropped back at a controlled rate while the boat is in gear without having the spool in complete freespool.

Innovation at its freshest...Trio spinning reels from Okuma feature a unique crossover construction. We took the best from aluminum construction and lightweight graphite materials and created a distinctive new concept in reel design. The solid one piece stamped aluminum reel stem and rotor arm are paired with lightweight graphite side plates and a rotor housing which provides strength where needed, and weight savings where possible. Crossover Spool The Trio spool, utilizing Crossover Construction principals, is a multi-piece design, taking advantage of the weight savings of carbon graphite, and utilizing the strength and stability of aluminum. The drag system is housed in a self-contained Aluminum Drag Chamber (ADC). The ADC increases stability and drag smoothness under torque from the use of braided lines and heavy drag settings. The ADC functions as the spool lip providing a smooth casting surface, for longer more accurate casts. The spool body is lightweight carbon graphite; with a reinforced spool skirt that adds strength, durability and distinctive styling. The Trio features Okuma’s legendary Dual Force Drag (DFD) System. DFD utilizes a secondary drag system mounted below the spool. This helps stabilize drag pressures, and offers maximum high end drag pressure.

The revolutionary Precision Elliptical Gearing design is patented in a number of countries around the world and is the soul of the Okuma mid to upper-end spinning reel range. The Precision Elliptical Gearing design uses elliptical shaped oscillation gears which provide exceptional line lay, improved smoothness and maximum long-life durability. The Precision Elliptical Gearing gears are always engaged and provide a very smooth spool stroke, eliminating the spool from jumping as commonly found on many reels.

AlumiLite construction incorporates Okuma's rigid aluminum body technology on spinning, trolling and fly reel designs. Aluminum frames are stronger and more rigid and are capable of withstanding more pressure and torque than traditional graphite frames. These lightweight, diecast aluminum frames provide more precise tolerances for precision gear alignment, maximum castability and ultimate durability.

The Hippo Grip is a unique reel-clamp design that serves triple duty when fishing offshore. This heavy-duty, forged aluminum reel clamp securely supports your reel to the rod for maximum safety. This clamp also incorporates a small hole that was designed to be used with a safety line for trolling. On the rear of the clamp is a large diameter hole that was designed to be used as a trigger. The large hole should be mounted facing the butt of the rod.

Okuma's 2-speed technology incorporates two sets of stainless steel main and pinion gears, allowing anglers the option of a high-speed gear ratio or a powerful low-speed gear ratio for maximum power and torque. To shift gears it is as easy as pushing a button or popping a lever with Okuma's unique shifting design to obtain the appropriate gear ratio you desire.

DFD incorporates both surfaces of the spool to maximize high-end drag pressure, efficiency and overall smoothness. Mounted in the top of the spool and protected by the Hydro Block system is a multi-disc felt drag system that works in conjunction with a secondary drag system that is mounted under the spool. Even pressure is applied to both surfaces of the spool for maximum stability.

Okuma's Machined Rigid Frame construction incorporates a one-piece fully-machined aluminum frame. These rigid bar-stock aluminum frames are the ultimate in precision alignment and tolerances withstanding more pressure and torque than any other material used in our industry for frame materials. Okuma features these anodized frames on fly reels, baitcast reels, lever drag reels and star drag trolling reels.

This heavy-duty, stainless steel levelwind is Titanium coated and built to withstand the punishment of braided and wire lines. The guide has been designed with an increased opening to insure proper knot clearance when fishing with double lines. This wide space allows for Albright or similar connection knots, as well as swivels and copper line to pass through the guide easier and be wound directly on the spool.

The XL gearing design found on both lever drag and star drag reels incorporates an oversized gear box that features an enlarged gearing system and enlarged drag system. The drag surface areas on this system are more than 50% larger than a standard gear-box design. For the gear system, the major advantage is that the gear teeth are substantially larger, allowing more strength and cranking power. This is how we are able to offer a high-speed gear ratio reel without sacrificing cranking power. Our XL gearing system essentially turns your reel into a winch.

The SLG technology incorporates a dual-step pinion gear system on star drag reels that allows positive engaging at extreme high speeds. The SLG system allows for instant gear engagement when engaging from freespool to strike at speeds in excess of 50 MPH.

High Performance Ball Bearings The balls used on the HPB's are constructed from the same high-grade stainless steel material as the bearing housing. These bearings were designed to be more than 10 times more resistant to saltwater than standard stainless steel bearings. These bearings may even outlast the angler himself.

The Ergo Grip handle knob is an extremely comfortable oversized handle-knob design for both speed and power. This soft-touch knob has been ergonomically designed to fit in the palm of your hand and will be found on certain Okuma lever drag reels, star drag reels and some spinning reel models.

This system allows for instant handle engagement and eliminates all handle back play commonly found in many reels. This is accomplished by using a corrosionresistant stainless steel roller bearing that engages the reel in one direction for rock-solid hook sets.

Okuma's stainless steel Body Armor eliminates the frame flex commonly found in graphite framed trolling reels. This feature incorporates two large stainless steel rings that are mounted to both sides of the frame. The harness lugs are integrated into the body armor design and eliminate the pressure commonly placed on the harness lugs by redistributing the pressure to these large-diameter rings.

Okuma's Strike Zone linecounter system incorporates a mechanical counter that precisely measures line based on spool revolutions. These counters measure in feet and are calibrated at the factory to be most accurate with a full spool and monofilament lines.

The RES II System stands for Rotor Equalizing System. This second-generation RES System incorporates a computer-balanced weight precisely placed in the rotor. This weight allows for precision balance and eliminates all spool wobble for perfect alignments and smooth cranking.

The self-lubricating gear system is a feature found on Okuma's higher-end star drag reels. The main gear on this system incorporates a heat-sensitive oil-impregnated brass bushing that is mounted in the center of the gear. This system releases oil if friction increases to keep the main gear and drive shaft running smoothly in all conditions. Okuma is the first company to adopt this technology which originated in the large machine industry where this function has been time tested for many years.

MCS

The Even Flow Roller System utilizes a ball bearing under the line roller to maximize efficiency. This roller helps reduce line twists by freely rolling over the line roller without friction. Without this system, line will naturally twist when drag is pulled.

This unique new design can be found on Okuma's low profile baitcast reels. The Spool Access Port allows for quick access to the spool by simply sliding the lock/unlock lever on the side plate opposite the handle. This system allows for quick spool changes, but more importantly it allows quick access for adjusting the Velocity Control System.

Okuma’s Magnetic Control System is a fully-sealed, 100% waterproof cast control system that reduces backlash and improves casting distance by utilizing the magnetic field generated by the high RPM spinning of the spool during casting. The magnetic field is influenced by the adjustable cast control magnet which exerts an opposing force and allows for minute and accurate adjustments.

The Hydro Block design features a rubber gasket mounted in the top of a spinning reel spool. This rubber seal blocks water and foreign materials from entering the drag system. The Hydro Block system ensures that your drag washers always perform at optimal levels.

The Hi-Rise Spool is designed for maximum casting performance. This machined-aluminum spool design features a large arbor and has holes drilled into the spool. By increasing this spool arbor and porting the arbor of the spool we can achieve maximum spool velocity. We also refer to this design as an inertia-free spool system.

Corrosion Resistant Coating combines Okuma’s proprietary HDG-II gearing system, which offers exceptional anti-corrosive properties compared to standard gears, with a coating of Corrosion X HD to all internal and external parts. The CRC process actually penetrates and bonds to the metal, which helps significantly toward long term protection.

Okuma's patented baitfeeding system allows anglers to disengage their spinning reel spool and allow their bait to run freely. The baitfeeding system incorporates a secondary micro-adjustable drag system at the rear of the reel that allows for precise adjustment of the spool for bait control. In order to disengage this system simply turn the handle. The On/Off lever on the rear of the reel will automatically disengage the baitfeeding system so you can fight your fish with the main drag system.

T-Bar Handle: The patented design of the T-Bar handle offers a true ergonomically correct angle to ensure an angler gets maximum power with minimum fatigue. The T-bar takes full advantage of the natural dynamics of the human hand, wrist and forearm to help sustain power and endurance for the angler.

The Velocity Control System is an adjustable, 6-pin centrifugal braking system for precision spool control. Weights can be adjusted IN or OUT for additional spool control. Positioning the weights in toward the spool allows for more freespool, while adjusting the pins out away from the spool allows for more control. Anglers can alternate weights until they find that perfect balance for casting.

The Waterproof Drag is a design incorporated on certain Okuma fly reels. This drag system is 100% waterproof and is protected by several oil-retaining O-rings. This system is maintenance-free and should only be opened by an Okuma technician.

MSS Strong, Stable, Smooth - Okuma’s Mechanical Stabilizing System is a support system that ties the spool shaft, pinion gear, pinion gear bearing, drive shaft and main gear together with a single support system. While other reels on the market offer minimal or no gear stabilization, this patented Okuma design allows all of these critical parts to stay in precise alignment. Designed specifically to hold up to the demands of braided and wire line fishing, the MSS support system stabilizes the spool shaft at 3 key stress points to eliminate flex under pressure – which directly translates into a reel that is more durable, stronger and smoother than the competition.

HDGII Okuma’s proprietary High Density Gearing II incorporates an extremely strong alloy composition with a special anti-corrosion coating process. The result is high density, corrosion resistant gears that are built to handle the severe elements and brutal strains placed on a reel’s internal gear system.

C-40X Carbon Material Okuma’s new C-40X carbon technology utilizes a specially blended graphite polymer. The carbon fibers in this material are elongated and reinforced, creating a substantially stronger composite than standard graphite materials. At 25% lighter, 1.5 times stronger and 100% anti-corrosive, C-40X translates into an extremely lightweight and durable construction.

We tested the smoothness of drag at a setting of 9kg. The smoother the drag the more chance the angler has of landing the fish. If the drag peaks too high there is more chance the leader will break, the hook will pull or a knot will give. If the troughs are too low the chance of the fish turning or the line slackening is further enhanced again reducing your chance of landing the fish. We tested the Okuma DFD system against three other leading brands “top of the line” reels. Some of these reels retail for more than double the cost of a V-system 80 & Salina II. The largest variation the V-System experienced was 850gms while the other brand reels delivered variation of over 2kg and up to 3.5kg. The results are mind blowing with only one of the competing reels costing the fisherman less than the V-System 80.

Felt vs Carbon Drags Should your reel have felt or carbon drag washers? Good question because both materials have advantages. Carbon drag washers will provide higher levels of drag pressure when fishing and they can handle heat better so drag pressure won’t dissipate as much with carbon. There is one fatal flaw with carbon drags and that is smoothness. When you are fishing for large snapper or even kingfish you might set your drag at 6-8kg.Our tests show that from 1kg to about 28kg felt drags are literally three times smoother than carbon. What does this mean? Well the smoother the drag the more consistent pressure you can keep on the fish. This, will lead to a quicker landing and will significantly reduce the risk of pulling a hook, breaking a leader or allowing the fish to turn. The problem with felt drag systems is that you can’t get the same pressure out of the reel that you can from carbon… or can you? Okuma have developed a patented technology called Dual Force Drag. DFD works by increasing the amount of spool surface area covered by felt drag washers, you can see in the diagrams the drag washers cover the entire bottom of the spool. End result; Ultra smooth drag with huge amounts of pressure on tap, it truly is the best of both worlds!

Salina II The Okuma Salina II reel is an upgraded addition to the spin range for 2014. Color-Metered For Precision Trolling. Tightly braided high tenacity Nylon multifilament yarn encapsulates a 99.9% pure lead core. Our “pure” lead construction offers a smaller diameter than standard lead core lines. Color metering every 10 yards with a high visibility dye enables the angler to instantly determine depth. A must for every angler who needs extra weight for deep water trolling. The sink rate of our Lead Core line is affected by many aspects, mainly boat speed, lure weight and current. We do, however, have a simple formula for standard sink rates under a specific

condition, which applies to our entire selection of Lead Core lines. When trolling at slow to medium speeds (1.52.5mph) using a one-ounce lure in no current; the typical depth will be 6 to 6-1/2 feet of depth per color or 1.25 feet per 2 yards of line. This depth will be effected either up or down by .25 feet for every 1/4 ounce of lure weight. The depth does not vary greatly between pound tests due to the line drag created by the larger pount test lines.

In 1997 Peter Pakula was the first Lure Manufacturer to make lures from super tough, super clear Polyurethane resulting in the first Softease and Diamond Heads. Part of this system was developing a system using single molds to form Trolling Lure Heads. In 2012 we have taken the system further introducing a new form of two part material that is even tougher than than any used previously, plus with new additives in UV, Fluorescent and Luminescent (Lumo®) we have put together the Paua Hothead Range which includes Keeled Jet Heads and standard heads all using advanced materials and additives shown in the video below (simply scan the Microsoft Tag below with your smart phone or tablet to view video). Dojo Shackles

Dojo Hooks are pre-sharpened using high strength Stainless Steel. All Pakula Dojo Peche Lures will come pre-rigged with Dojo Hooks. These hooks and shackles will also be available in separate packs as well as shackle rigs for all skirted lure sizes. To sidestep current confusion with hook sizes Dojo hooks will be sized in packs according to their gape. This is a useful method to choose the right sized hook. For a skirted lure, the hook gape should equal the lure head diameter. Dojo Hooks will be ideal for live baiting, as an assist hook, and, indeed most applications requiring a great hook rate using a strong sharp hook.

The Pakula Shackle Rig TM was originally invented by Peter Pakula when trolling lures for Blue Marlin on the East Coast, Australia. It was a time when many lures of all types including Pakula prototypes were tried daily. This necessitated a rig that could easily and quickly be transferred between lures and also allowed the lure maximum freedom of action. The Pakula Dojo Peche Shackle Rig TM allows the hooks total freedom to line up with the lures centre eliminating line twist. The hooks are free to swing allowing the lure to exhibit its best possible action without hindrance or keeling effects. This gives the hooks the best possible chance of hooking up as they are able to work independently of each other.

Pakula Shackles are incredibly strong made from 304 Stainless Steel. The extra small size will take weights of 300kg and the small over 400kg. The benefits of using Shackles in rigs is they allow the lure freedom to exhibit the lure makers desired action. They allow the hooks to self centre which minimises lure spin and line twist.
