he BBC Countryfile team were in Cromer filming their view of the town for a programme scheduled for transmission on 12th August. The programme takes a particular interest in the shelter at The Marrams on the west cliffs. Its just one of the pieces of sea-side architecture we pass daily and hardly notice but has been in need of some tlc for a while. Continued on page 12

s this Issue is published the 2012 Olympic Games will be starting. After years of planning and, it must be said, a huge amount of money has been spent, the focus will shift from ‘will everything be ready’ to comparisons with other recent opening ceremonies, then, at last, to the achievements of the athletes. In the last Issue I commented on the highly organised Olympic Torch relay being a good sign for the rest of the Games, only to have the G4S security debacle emerge a few days later. Fortunately we still have sufficient numbers in the Armed Forces to bolster this woeful private sector effort. However the important thing is that serious problems have been uncovered and corrected before the event. Always better to discover problems during ‘rehearsals’ than on the opening night or during the run. There can be no doubt that the planning, organisation and running of such a major event is a truly enormous task and inevitably there will be things that go wrong. Hopefully all will tun out well and undoubtedly those responsible will receive public acknowledgement and probably reward. Much closer to home I am struck by the number of fetes, events, festivals and activities across the Crabline area. They all require organising and managing, most by a small number of community spirited volunteers present in every town, village or group. They take on tasks that enable the rest of us to add enjoyment or provide additional quality to our lives. The least we can do is remember to say Thank You to them.

Dear Editor your letters and emails The Crabline Merchants’ Place 16 Church Street Cromer Norfolk NR27 9ES editor@crabline.org

Dear Sir Summer is here and so are the Jet Skiers at Mundesley. My elderly husband is in a care home at Mundesley overlooking the sea. At weekends when the weather is good I am aware of the Jet Skiers by their noise and fumes. If this carries on my husband and other residents will be unable to enjoy the garden of the home during the summer. When will NNDC take action and stop this nuisance? I thought we were trying to encourage visitors to our beautiful coastline, this will put them off coming here and also the danger to swimmers and seals. Yours faithfully Rosemary Venables Bacton Dear Editor I had eight very happy years working in the Day Centre at Benjamin Court, and even after retiring I went back as a volunteer to keep in touch with the client group and to stay in touch with the very friendly hard working staff who were my work mates over the years. I am very sad to hear that changes are being made to services and that Pat Hambling is leaving at the end of August. I have never worked with a more committed to her job carer than Pat and feel her loss will greatly sadden many many people from Cromer and the surrounding district. I hope to pop in to say goodbye on Friday 31st August and I am sure she would be pleased to see anyone who wants to wish her well. Hazel Kingswood Marsham By email Dear Editor On Friday June 29th I had a very bad fall in the sunken gardens near North Lodge Park in Cromer. Just before I fell I had noticed a group of people near-by. When I fell they all rushed over and did everything one could hope for in such a situation. After gently picking me up, sitting me on a bench and tending to my wounds as best they could, they notified the Henry Blogg Museum, where I was due to be on duty. They phoned for a paramedic and stayed with me until he arrived. They followed that up with a very caring note to me wishing me well delivered to the museum. A sincere thank you to these kind folk and a reminder to us all that we can have faith in human nature. Sue Blake Cromer

Dear Editor, I agree with you (Crabline Issue 249) that Cromer Skateboarders "deserve our respect and every assistance to create the Cromer Skatepark" Some considerable time ago, whilst I was in Cromer, a group of youngsters were asking people to sign their petition for a skate park. I was only too happy to sign but now I see, because of a number of objections, their plans will have to be decided by Councillors on the developement committee rather than being determined by officers. In Mundesley we have a wonderful skatepark thanks to lots of hard work by our Youth and Community Group and all their volunteers. The skatepark is in constant use by everyone from tiny children with their helmets, which make them look like spacemen, to adults (without helmets) and all ages in between. They come with their bikes, scooters and skateboards and we are treated to some unbelievable displays of acrobatics. There are no arguments, these youngsters are there for the sheer joy of being able "to do their own thing".

Dear Mr Mouse, I was sorry to hear you have sensitive hearing, it must be those big ears!! Please avail yourself of some ear plugs and join myself and many Triminghamites, raising funds for our NEW VILLAGE HALL at the Pilgrim Shelter events.- too many to mention here but see The Crabline Whats On and Special Events pages. The lady in the floral dress!! my ears? mrs w mouse says as a lady you should know that size doesn't matter. We did look in at your "tee, wee, and barbee" thing. Our fears about all that tea followed by wee were unfounded and it was great fun.. Dear Editor The Crabline - a good read whenever I cannot get down to the area. We had some new visitors to the Leake Caravan Park at East Runton recently, they were guests of Mack and Bren, but it was so wet they decided to go home early. Best regards John Morris Coventry

The only noise you'll hear, if you can call it that, is chatter and laughter. Its not unusual to have 30 plus youngsters at any one time when the weather allows, and they do not cause any problems to people living nearby.. Perhaps the people of Cromer who are objecting to the skatepark plans could make a trip to Mundesley to see how things work here. They could make use of the picnic area and enjoy the outdoor gym - eight pieces of equipment intended for us older folk although naturally we share this with the children. It is a fun place to be and I hope the same can soon be said for the youngsters of Cromer. Janet Munro Mundesley

This enabled him to concentrate full-time on Poppyland Publishing, the local history and multimedia production company.

Apart from this, Peter holds various local directorships and is a member of several more community committees. He is a director of the Nelson Museum and Cromer PPF. In addition he is a governor of Paston College. Whilst keeping himself active in these ways, he has become President of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club for the second time in six years. “We have many new ideas for moving the Club forward during this coming year,” he said, “particularly a closer interaction with the local community”

odern wetsuit and board technology has enabled surfing to develop significantly in the UK and there is now a thriving surf scene on the East coast, nowhere more so than North Norfolk. British surf culture has developed from the rather more sun-kissed West coast USA but still has the same underlying relaxed, easygoing themes, Until a few weeks ago surfers on the North Norfolk coast didn’t have the same access to or choice of clothing and accessories suited to their life on the water, on the beach or around town. That changed when Wet Dog opened in Cromer. Owners Phil and Kay have used their wealth of retail and fashion experience to create Wet Dog which presents knowledgeable customers with respected surf brand names such as Animal, O’Neill, Saltrock, Quiksilver, Roxy, Kahuna, with Billabong, Santa Cruz and Buff arriving soon, all at affordable prices, alongside carefully selected non-branded items that will suit all pockets. Their understanding of

the wider appeal of the surfer- enjoyable shopping experience for anyone style, is reflected in the vibrant visiting this refreshingly different shop. “Having ranges Wet Dog offers. “We only opened only a few short weeks ago we have buy limited numbers in any range, have already had some great feedback: ‘about including the main brands, to time Cromer had a shop like this’, ‘long ensure our customers can create overdue’, ‘fantastic’, ‘so colourful and such a the individual look they want.” said great selection’, ‘a great mix and well-priced Phil. The move comes after Cllr Richard Smith (Lib Dem) and supporters of the project raised concerns about how the council's Cabinet had reduced the grant to £10,000 to show 'consistency' with other projects in North Norfolk. This placed the project at risk as matched funding from Sport England was dependant upon the £30,000 grant. Sheringham Councillor has welcomed The Cabinet has now used cash from the the news that the Sheringham Skate £1.34m that NNDC received from Tesco, in Project has received an extra £20,000 lieu of the demolition of the Lockerbie Flats, to from North Norfolk District Council and is grant the remaining £20,000. Commenting Cllr calling for more investment for the town. Richard Smith said: "This funding is a welcome

boost for the project and I am glad the Council has seen sense to listen to people's views and award the full £30,000. This will be an excellent facility for young people in Sheringham." He added "Now that the precedent has been set to start using the £1.34m from Tesco I believe other projects in the town could benefit as well and I will be urging the council to award more funds. For example, the West promenade is in desperate need of funding to improve infrastructure such as the lights, and funds could be used to improve the play area on the Cromer Road which is in a sorry state."

Wacky Windbreaks Auction winds up 2012 Crab & Lobster Festival

T

he sun shone on the Wacky Windbreak Auction held on Sunday 22 July at Cromer Pier Forecourt drawing the crowds and providing a great conclusion to the 2012 Cromer & Sheringham Crab and Lobster Festival. The windbreaks are original artworks sponsored and decorated by individuals, groups, clubs and businesses in the Cromer and Sheringham area as entries in the latest of the series of ‘best decorated’ competitions the festival has held. All have been part of a special festival windbreak trail since May. Their final festival duty was to raise money in auction for this year’s festival’s charities. The sale was the only occasion all the windbreaks were exhibited in one place. They went on view at 1100am on Sunday morning attracting a lot of interest from passers-by and potential buyers. Hundreds of Auctioneer Martyn Fox people gathered for the 50 lot sale at 2.00pm. The sale proceeded briskly under the skilled guidance of auctioneer Martyn Fox and from the strong bidding it was apparent many lots had a high level of interest. In a little under two hours the sale had raised a fantastic £4100. The well

organised sale ‘office’ run by Festival Secretary Kate Royall and the team of porters, directed by Festival Chairman Tony Shipp, ensured successful bidders could leave with their purchases promptly. Shortly after the last purchase had been completed Kate Royall was asked for her reaction “we have made £4100 and are really happy about this”. Interviewed after the sale

Tony Shipp said “We are very pleased indeed with the sale today and the generous bidding from all the buyers. The weather has been perfect for us and it’s a great start to the main holiday season”. The 2013 festival takes place 17-19 May and will include a decorated Lifebuoy Trail. Sponsorship opportunities, including the lifebuoys, are available now. with PC Lorna Law Hi Everyone I had a lovely drive in the countryside this week. While driving I met Kayleigh and her Mum out riding. Kayleigh was riding her pony named Rosie. Kayleigh’s Mum asked me to say ‘Thank you’ to all the kind motorist who patiently waited while Kayleigh and Rosie trotted past.

If you drive past a horse please give it consideration and slow down, do not sound your horn. Riding horses or ponies When out riding your horse or pony on the road you should follow the guidelines given by the Department of Transport. The information below can be found in the highway code. Before a horse or pony is taken out on the road you must make sure that it is properly shod and the saddle and bridle fit well and are in good condition. Always make sure you can control your horse. If your horse is nervous, ride with other less nervous horses. Before you move off or turn, always look around to see if it is safe, give a clear arm signal and move off with both hands on the reins. Avoid roundabouts wherever possible. If you have to use one, keep to the left and look out for traffic coming on to the roundabout from other roads. Signal left before you leave the roundabout. When you lead a horse, always keep yourself between it and the traffic. Make sure other road users can see you by day and night. Fit fluorescent/reflective leg bands and tail guard to your horse and wear a fluorescent jacket or belt. It is safer not to ride at night, but if you have to you should fit a light which shows white to the front and red to the rear and you should wear a band on your right arm and/or leg/riding boot. If you are under 14 you must wear an approved safety helmet which must be fastened securely. Those 14 and over should also wear a helmet. Wear boots and shoes with hard soles and heels. Keep to the left. Keep hands on reins unless you are signalling. keep both feet in the stirrups. Do not carry another person.

Surfing in the UK is generally accepted to have its origins at St Ouens Bay in Jersey and at Newquay in Cornwall in the late 1950s when South Africans and Australians employed as lifeguards brought their boards with them. However letters discovered in Honolulu from two Hawaiian Princes (surfing was created by the Polynesian culture) proves they and their English guardian went surfing at Bridlington in September 1890, so the East coast must be the birthplace of surfing in Britain!

Presenter Julia Bradbury, the NNDC team and volunteers from the town all made a contribution as paint was scraped, wood sanded and new paint applied. hat larks! Mundesley All Saints’ church fete on the seafront green. Amongst the tenting, with people getting out their purses to have a go on the various stalls. So many interesting people to meet. Greeting each other with hugs and kisses, sharing cups of tea and cakes. Mike on the barbecue cooking the sausages. Good old Mundesley, another lovely fete, the money going to good causes and fun had by all. A small village, but with a large heart. Can’t wait for the next excuse to meet up and greet old and new friends. Oh, and the cake stall was heaving with goodies which were soon bought by those early enough to be lucky. to whilst seated in the shelter. The programme led to some research into when the shelter and zig-zag slopes were built; most of the residents interviewed agreed it was just before the Second World War. Young fisherman David Hare is filmed at sea The NNDC team talking about how he has joined the seasonal hunt for crab and lobster. The Countryfile Artist Mik Richardson assists Julia Bradbury programme also explores the Clement Scott and Poppyland connections.

Oh what a building the original hall is. A wonderful semi-circular entrance with columns either side - it’s a privilege to be able to visit such places. The panelled rooms and plastered ceilings now much less formal with all the paraphernalia of a school and the huge sash windows letting in the sunlight. We were greeted by the students who guided us carefully to the car park. Stalls selling clothes, bric-a-brac, books and tombolas were heavy with goods. The plants were excellent and soon left the stall carried off to gardens new. What a friendly atmosphere and outside the games, raffles, freshly grilled burgers and sausages to get one spending more. But the cake stall - cupcakes by the hundreds, lovingly baked and beautifully decorated by hand; ladybirds, chocolate icing, piped decorations flowers and many other icing embellishments. Needless to say dozens of visitors sat with cups of tea enjoying the delicious goodies. So much work had gone into this event and praise is due to the Mums (and Dads) teachers, staff and especially the students of Sidestrand Hall School who put so much effort into it before and during the day. Although the students had a day off from lessons it wasn’t by any means a day off. Congratulations Sidestrand hall School this was a memorable fete. JH

Dear Mr h mouse Re your recent visit to Trimingham. The rowdiness you describe in the Pilgrim Shelter is the happy sound of people enjoying themselves. I moved to the village a year ago and my husband and I love the real buzz we get from our new friends getting together. A lot of hard work goes into these social occasions. As for your comment about the lady in the flowery dress. I find this rather offensive and would hope that other mice have none of your sense of humour. Try to be more positive in the future please or mouse traps may have to be strategically placed ! Yours in hope Liz Bowler Trimingham P.S I am on email but guess you need paper for nesting purposes. Outside the Olympic Stadium a Scotsman, an Englishman and an Irishman want to get in, but they haven't got tickets. The Scotsman picks up a manhole-cover, tucks it under his arm and walks to the gate. "McTavish, Scotland ," he says, "Discus," and in he walks. The Englishman picks up a length of scaffolding and slings it over his shoulder. "Waddington-Smythe, England ," he says, "Pole vault," and in he walks. The Irishman looks around, picks up a roll of barbed wire and tucks it under his arm.

"O'Malley, Ireland " he says, "Fencing." 15
