Fragments By Heraclitus

H

eraclitus of Ephesus was an Ancient Greek, pre-Socratic, Ionian philosopher and a native of the city of Ephesus, which was then part of the Persian Empire. His appreciation for wordplay and oracular expressions, as well as paradoxical elements in his philosophy, earned him the epithet “The Obscure” from antiquity. He wrote a single work, On Nature, only fragments of which have survived, increasing the obscurity associated with his life and philosophy. Heraclitus’s cryptic utterances have been the subject of numerous interpretations. He has been seen as a “material monist or a process philosopher; a scientific cosmologist, a metaphysician and a religious thinker; an empiricist, a rationalist, a mystic; a conventional thinker and a revolutionary; a developer of logic—one who denied the law of non-contradiction; the first genuine philosopher and an anti-intellectual obscurantist.” Heraclitus believed the world is in accordance with Logos (literally, “word”, “reason”, or “account”) and is ultimately made of fire. He also believed in a unity of opposites and harmony in the world. He was most famous for his insistence on ever-present change—known in philosophy as “flux” or “becoming”—as the characteristic feature of the world; an idea he expressed in the famous saying, “No man ever steps in the same river twice”, or with panta rhei (“everything flows”). This aspect of his philosophy is contrasted with that of Parmenides, who believed in “being” and in the static nature of the universe. Both Heraclitus and Parmenides had an influence on Plato, who went on to influence all of Western philosophy. Source: Wikipedia

Your ego is NOT always your amigo!

A

ll of us have an ego to one degree or another…None of us like getting cussed at or having our mothers called specific names. But, in today’s society, with so many “crazies” out there, you’ve got to be more disciplined than ever, and you have to swallow your pride. Case in point… You probably heard about the snow shoveling deaths in Pennsylvania that took place about two weeks ago. Two neighbors got in a very heated argument about throwing the snow on each other’s property. They were screaming and cussing and saying all sorts of things about one another. Finally, one of the men went into his home, grabbed a gun, and killed the other neighbor and his wife. In the video, he shot the wife at pointblank range multiple times. Now, most people will not commit murder over snow shoveling, but you just never know who will. It’s the same thing with road rage. Most people are not going to murder over getting cut off, but there are enough who will, which is why you hear about it often on the nightly news. I’ve been in that situation myself. I once got in a car accident with a guy who tried to blame me when it was clearly his fault. As much as a wanted to snap his head off, I remained calm as he went psycho on me. I could tell this guy was unhinged, and it wasn’t worth it to provoke him.

Bear in mind, I was prepared to defend myself at a moment’s notice if it came to that. But I wasn’t going to do anything to escalate the situation with a crazy person. Eventually, my demeanor calmed the fellow down, and all was well. So, as you’re going about your daily business, you will no doubt run into major jerks who deserve a pounding. Care for a Cup of Camellia Tea?

chdomecq@hotmail.com

by: Coy Domecq

T

hese days it seems that tea varieties abound. There is lavender tea, citron tea, lemon thyme tea, chamomile tea, and hibiscus tea. There is one thing all the aforementioned teas share; they are tea imposters. These are not true teas but herb and fruit infusions. Not to seem elitist, but all true tea comes from the Camellia plant (Camellia sinensis). This shrub produces leaves that are harvested and prepared to yield such products as green tea, white tea, black tea, Earl Grey tea, and oolong tea. I know. I can hear the voices of dissent welling up between the lines of this tea blasphemy. “Look, I have camellias in my yard and they are positively not tea shrubs.” But in fact, all camellias are in the tea family. Even though you can certainly brew a decent cup of tea from your resident yard camellias, they are of a different species, typically Camellia japonica. The Camellia japonica varieties and hybrids are bred for their ornamental floral beauty while Camellia

sinensis strains are cultivated to bring out the best tea characteristics appealing to tea lovers. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as plucking a few leaves off your camellia and brewing up a concoction. At a minimum, the tea leaves must be dried prior to steeping. At a maximum, the leaves can be roasted, aged, or even fermented before brewing your beverage. In addition to preparation method, the timing of the leaf harvest and the leaf location on the plant has influence on the taste of the final product. Loose tea leaves are considered the crème de la crème of the self-respecting tea drinking crowd and lawdy mercy, them there tea bags are filled with nothing but tea leaf “dust” that simply should not be suffered by decent folks. Tea dust was once considered a waste product by tea producers, until it was packaged in convenient flow-through bags. Just for fun, the next time guests visit, ask them if they would like to have a brisk cup, or glass, of freshly brewed camellia leaves.

Tea Milkshake Recipe Brew a strong cup of hot black or green tea. (The longer it steeps the stronger the flavor.) Once the liquid cools, remove the bag and pour the tea into a blender. Add 3-4 scoops of good quality vanilla ice-cream and blend. For a looser consistency if desired, add a small amount of milk. Pour into a glass, enjoy as is, or add a favorite topping.

JIM KAIGHN INSURANCE AGENCY- HOME OF THE “INSURANCE DOCTOR”

G

etting close to retirement is a scary time of life, especially when it comes to money and insurance matters. One of these matters deals with health insurance and the major changes that happens at this time.. Many of you carry group health insurance from your employer, some have their own coverage-- mostly Obamacare or have none at all..I have had many clients over the years actually hoping for the time they reach age 65, so they can get into a better form of health insurance protection known as MEDICARE...ThIs idea helps solve many problems they have had before.. Now,MOSTLY, ALL AILMENTS ARE COVERED!! Many see their premiums drop to next to nothing compared to what they were paying.. With regular Medicare , there is no cost to you, except for some money coming out of your Social Security check,, But this coverage usually only covers 80 % of your bills--you need to look into a second type of plan-called a “Medicare Supplement”---But, one other important plan that is needed for people, even before retirement is LONG TERM CARE COVERAGE in case you need to go into a nursing home...The major problem here is this type of insurance is VERY EXPENSIVE!! AND you need to be very healthy to qualify for it, even if you can afford it.. Even if you can get it when you are in your 40’s or 50’s., most folks can not afford it and if you can, there have been MANY, MANY companies who do not sell it any more, because it is to costly for them to pay for the influx of baby-boomers living longer and going to nursing homes or staying at home care and staying longer under care.. with only a few companies left, they can charge premiums higher then

by Jim KAIGHN, CLU,CHFC,RHU,AABA, BSBA,LUTCF Veteran of U.S. NAVY and COAST GUARD normal, making it still harder to qualify.......... Basically, only folks who are very well off financially can afford to self insure themselves in the nursing home..Many Financial “Experts” want you to start saving while you are young to have this WAD of money to help pay for all this Gloom and Doom time in your life..Just be careful of these savings ideas for your future because they may tell you they can predict TAXES at that time or how the economy will be in 5,10 20 30 years .. But, some of our politicians will tell us that they will take care of you, don’t worry!! Basically, this time of life is good or should be but do not think it will “SUNSHINE, LOLLIPOPS AND RAINBOWS” .. There is no answer now for this that is good for all, and probably never will be.. Don’t bury your heads in the sand, and good luck in your endeavors. To contact me for any insurance or money matters, call me like many have done over my 4 years doing these articles , call me at 252 202 5983 or 252 335 5983 or on my e-mail at “INSDR@ROADRUNNER. Jakes Outdoor Adventures

I

t is now April and the fishing should be picking up on the surf, pier and offshore. Hopefully you took advantage of the wet winter we had and serviced your rods and reels. If you haven’t, here are some quick things you can do to make sure you don’t experience a tackle failure and lose a great catch. First, take your finger and rub the inside of all your rod guides and make sure you don’t have any burrs or crack rings in your guides. If you do have one of these issues when you hook a great catch, the fishing line will catch on one of these and the line may break. Next, make sure your rod tip is solid and is not loose. A loose rod tip is a common problem that you or a rod builder can fix. Next, if you haven’t changed your monofilament line now is a good time to change it out. If you use braided line and you have not been experiencing wind knots or chafing issues, braided line can last for several years depending on how much you fish. If you are going to continue using the same braided line, make sure you pull off about a couple of yards or more to keep the line where you tie lures or splice monofilament fresh. You can do it yourself or you can take it to a tackle shop and have them change it out with a spooler. One bit of advice is if you do take it to the shop, go ahead and remove the line so you will minimize your time in the shop. Also the tackle shop employees will appreciate this because it will save them time having to unspool it and then respool it. The next thing you need to do is make sure your reels are in working order. If you know how and where to oil them, take this time to do so. If you are not quite sure, then take them to a reel repair shop or person who specializes in this lost art. Today in our throwaway society, many companies are making reels so inexpensive that when you have an issue it is some-

10

Albemarle Tradewinds April 2021

times cheaper just to buy a new one. Also many companies are building reels with the gears and bearings totally encased and filled with oil, and they will never need oiling even if you happen to drop it in the surf into the sand.

Adopt a Furry Friend

Now is a time to take inventory of your tackle boxes and go ahead and make a shopping list to restock items you are low on. Nothing is worse than being on the surf or a boat and realizing you are out of something burning a hot bite. The fishing industry has experienced supply disruptions like every other industry and you may find some items harder to find or out of stock at your local tackle shops. If you are thinking about an offshore trip please come join us on the Seaducer out of the Oregon Inlet FIshing Center. Captain Daniels and I will do everything we can to make your trip a success!!

Dear Dr. Crime: A young girl in our neighborhood was kidnapped and forced to be a prostitute. She escaped and is home now, and I want to do my part to help end human trafficking. I can’t stand knowing this is going on. Got ideas? UPSET FELLOW Dear Fellow. I am with you, let’s get others upset. I hate bullies and those that use kids for sex are the worse. Of course, start by talking with your local law enforcement. And consider that several plans for what you want to do can be found with the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation of the Administration for Children and Families. They are at 330 C Street SW , Washington, DC 20201. They even have plans for how to get sexually active kids to stop having sex. And you will find helpful the ACF Office on Trafficking in Persons, located at the Mary E. Switzer Building, 330 C ST SW, Washington, DC 20201. Also see everyonesinvited.uk/help. Black girls who are or have been victims should see the website TherapyForBlackGirls.com and all should contact their physician. Dear Dr. Crime: What causes gun violence? Shot-at kid Dear Kid: I am glad you ducked but we should not have to put up with the violence we see today. A strong research study reported in PLOS Medicine, found several “causes”, including social mobility, social determinants of health, income inequality, trust in institutions, welfare spending, and racial and economic segregation. The author, Dr. Daniel Kim,

pointed out such causes could be changed by political action and more research. The Atlantic reported that we have a crime wave unlike anything we’ve seen this century, including a 2020 surge of gun deaths that reached the highest point in U.S. history. Dear Dr. Crime: How dangerous is it to be a cop? Kid Planning Dear Kid: I encourage everyone to thank our law enforcement officers. We owe them so much!! There were a few more officers killed in accidents than in felony confrontations. The FBI reports 48 felonious deaths occurred in 19 states and in Puerto Rico. The number of officers killed as a result of criminal acts in 2019 was 8 less than the 56 officers who were feloniously killed in 2018. Long term numbers shows an increase of 7 felonious deaths compared with the 41 killed in 2015 and a decrease of 7 deaths compared with 2010. We owe them a lot. If any of the readers of this column has an opportunity to support our law enforcement system, do so. Dear Dr. Crime: How do I find out if my boyfriend has a criminal record? Scared and Beautiful Lady Dear Lady: You can search NC criminal records at abcNC.com. I urge you to do it, for a record of violent behavior in a potential boyfriend or girlfriend should be a hint to take care. Be safe. Dear Dr. Crime: You seem to know stuff about old people getting victimized. I want to act in the interest of my old family members and old folks generally. What can you tell me that will help? Young and active boy Dear Young and Active: I remember and now am pleased at your concerns. “Elder Abuse” makes me mad. For help contact Eldercare Locator at https:// eldercare.acl.gov, eldercarelocator@n4a.org or 800-677-1116 (toll-free). The FBI statistics show the problem has grown considerably over the past century. The Camden Senior Center is presenting a valuable (free) “Unmasking Elder Abuse” with diverse speakers, free lunch, and critical information. Chowanoke History

W

by Duvonya Chavis

hile the Chowanoke Reservation is located in Gates County, Chowanoke territory had previously extended from the Blackwater River in Virginia to as far south as Edenton. In fact, Edenton is located in its namesake county, Chowan. There were many Chowanoke villages that were established along the Chowan River which primarily encompassed areas in Gates, Hertford, Bertie, and Chowan Counties. The Chowanoke played a significant role in establishing towns and systems of local government in the Roanoke Chowanoke area by providing a foundation for later growth. According to archaeologist Dr. David Phelps, the Chowanoke Indians were described as a sedentary people who had lived in the area for well over 800 years. He based his conclusions on radiocarbon dating of artifacts and other findings from various Chowanoke village sites. The Chowanoke had thriving villages that had been established for hundreds of years prior to colonization. Dr. Phelps believed that many towns that exist today evolved from those villages. For example, the Chowanoke capital was named Choanoac. This village evolved into present day Harrellsville. Metocquuem is another known Chowanoke village that was once located in an area of Bertie County known today as Merry Hill. This village was situated along Salmon Creek, a tributary off the Chowan River. Interestingly, this area has recently become an increasingly popular site as archaeologist have recently uncovered artifacts that display primary Algonquin influence and culture. Noting this as a Chowanoke village site, they have also uncovered European artifacts which date back to the 1500’s. This discovery has proposed exciting theories surrounding findings from a site that also correlates with the location of a questionable patch that was placed on a drawing that John White himself had made of the Roanoke area in 1585. Could this village have been the site of an English settlement that was incorporated within and that has remained a mystery to this day? Many seem to think so.

aving a healthy lifestyle is a real struggle in this day and age but is also the need of the hour, now more than ever. We are always lured into trying fad and crash diets that tend to make our internal body unstable. Several foods can cause a stark difference in your health conditions and can either revitalize your body or degrade it to a large extent. Cancer is one of the major life-threatening diseases around the world. Researches are revealing that the chances of cancer can be reduced by 30-50% simply by making alterations in your food habits and opting for a healthy lifestyle. According to scientists, there is no single superfood that can help you in fighting cancer. However, conscious efforts in choosing a healthy combination of diet can result in some positive effects on your well-being. [1] Some of the options that can help you combat the cancer-causing agents are discussed below: a) Consume Cruciferous Vegetables [2]: Vegetables that fall under this category includes cancer-fighting agents and phytochemicals. The vegetables that fall under this category are cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage which consists of sulforaphane which helps in the reduction of the tumour by around 50 %. These vegetables also protect you against stomach and oesophageal cancer. b) Fruits [2]: Several fruits contain anti-cancer properties and help in decreasing the damage done by cancerous cells. Apples contain polyphenols that have inhibitory properties which prevent the growth of certain types of tumours. Berries are also a great option as they have high antioxidant properties and have shown a marked contribution in reducing colon cancer. c) Turmeric: This is one of the most common ingredients of every Indian household and has been proven to have exceptional anti-cancer properties. It is antioxidant, contains curcumin and also has antibacterial properties. Curcumin helps in the reduction of tumour formation and also helps in apoptosis.[3]

of developing cancer and they might also give rise to several cancer-causing agents. You should always be aware of such food items and be very cautious while consuming them. Some examples are discussed below: a) Processed Meat: As per WHO processed meat is proven to have Group 1 carcinogens, these carcinogens are mainly responsible for causing stomach and colorectal cancer. You can substitute processed meat with chicken, white meat and whitefish. b) Red Meat: This is another major cancer-causing culprit and is responsible for causing prostate and pancreatic cancer. According to Cancer Council, the average limit of consuming red meat is between 65 to 100kg per week. You can substitute red meat with beans, pulses and fish. c) Alcohol: Alcoholism is one of the most prominent factors that contributes to the development of cancer and has been proven to have Group 1 carcinogens. Cancers associated with alcohol consumption are breast, liver, stomach and bowel cancer. [4] Our health is dependent on the diet we consume. To lead a healthy and well-balanced life, we need to be sure of the food we intake and also moderate and manage our consumption of some specific ingredients. We have shared with you a short list of food items that can help you combat cancer and also those items that can be the contributing factors. A diet rich in proteins, vegetables, vitamins and minerals may sound boring but promises you longevity and positive results.

We are always tempted by the innumerable unhealthy choices of food that are in front of our eyes 24*7. Some of these food options are the root cause References: [1] Healthline; “Cancer and Diet 101: How What You Eat Can Influence Cancer”; Mary Jane Brown; accessed on 31st March 2021; https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/cancer-and-diet [2] Medical News Today; “The best cancer-fighting foods”; Jamie Eske; accessed on 31st March 2021; https:// www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324193#cruciferous-vegetables [3] Loma Linda University Health; “ 7 Foods to Fight Cancer, Heart Disease and Enhance Health”; Janelle Ringer; accessed on 30th March 2021; https://news.llu.edu/patient-care/7-foods-fight-cancer-heart-diseaseand-enhance-health [4] Aetna; “A Factual List of Cancer-Causing and Cancer Fighting Foods”; accessed on 31st March 2021; https://www.aetnainternational.com/en/about-us/explore/fit-for-duty-corporate-wellness/cancer-causing-foodscancer-fighting-foods.html

Get Ready…..April is Stress Awareness Month:

S

pring is upon us. It’s time to dust off winter, take a deep breath, and ready ourselves for a new season. It can be a busy time of year, but don’t stress. No, really, don’t stress. Stress is a natural negative reaction in your mind and body to challenges. And while it can positively motivate you to get through certain obstacles, it can also wreak havoc on your physical and mental health.

Therapeutic Massage

You can’t escape stress, but you can change how you deal with it. When you’re faced with anxiety: • Take a deep breath and focus on why you’re actually feeling this way. • Take a walk or do any exercise where you can think about the situation and how to handle it without blowing up, figuratively and literally. • Be proactive and schedule regular massage appointments. Massage has been shown to reduce stress significantly on physical and psychological levels. Never forget, we are here for you.

Art in the Albemarle Area

W

elcome to April!! Spring in the air and possibly some art shows will be very prominent in our area, provided the social isolation time is over. Let’s hope that will be the case,

I certainly hope that during this isolation time you have had the opportunity to perform several art related tasks. Organize your materials, this will take more time than you think, especially if your art space is like mine. Declutter everything, organize your brushes (according to length, shapes, purpose, and which types of paints they will be used for. Then organize your paints, oil, acrylic, watercolor, paint pens, etc.(including your canvases or watercolor papers). This will present you with room to paint and sketch future paintings and ideas. Determine what new painting materials you may need, such as reference materials, new paints, new brushes, and perhaps even a new easel. I hope you will step foreword on your own journey into painting and creating your own artwork. Perhaps you are thinking that you need a little more formal instruction to get motivated. That is not necessarily true.I was researching the internet and there are a plethora of teaching classes that can aid you in getting started. When this isolation period is over, there are paint parties, kids

There are a myriad of supplies available and provided in order to get you started in painting. There are programs for mixed media, watercolors, acrylics, oils, and various art activities. Please visit the Studio facebook page for more information. There are also free lessons fornd on the internet for the various types of paintings, a few are “Simply Painting with Frank Clarke.” Also Pinterest has great concepts and lessons, also YouTube. You will never know unless you check these ideas and places out. When you see beautiful paintings and crafts...... you say to yourself..”I wish I could paint like that,” fear not you can !! All you need to do is make the attempt. The more you practice the better you gat.... my suggestion is to watch the Simply Painting tutorials...you won’t regret it. You will be using watercolors, cleanup is easy, and you will be amazed at what you have learned in these step by step videos.

The Day before Easter

I

― Heraclitus

by Fr Jonathan Tobias, MDiv, MSEd

It is a quiet beginning, like the twilight that precedes sunrise at dawn. In the middle of Liturgy on Saturday, the dark vestments and altar cloths of Good Friday are removed, and the silver and white vestments of the Resurrection are placed.

Since so much humanity was locked in the prison of death, Jesus descended there as the Good Shepherd to seek out His lost sheep. In answer to that heartbreaking question asked by the Lord in the Garden of Eden, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3.9), one of the Holy Saturday hymns says, “To earth hast Thou come down, O Master, to save Adam: and not finding him on earth, Thou hast descended into hell, seeking him there.”

Easter is the central celebration of the year. It is the reason why Christians celebrate on Sunday, as it is the day that the Lord rose from the grave.

And there, the Lord finds him: “Adam was afraid when God walked in Paradise, but now he rejoices when God descends to hell. Then he fell, but now he is raised up.”

n the Orthodox Church, the celebration of the Resurrection starts on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. (This year, the Orthodox Church celebrates Easter on May 2nd)

Did you know the Albemarle Tradewinds is located in more than 250 locations in NENC and Chesapeake?

But that rising began on Saturday, the day before. On that day, the Lord descended into hell. While His Body remained in the grave, He entered hell and there He revealed the overwhelming brightness of His divinity. The descent of Christ into hell is crucial in the Orthodox faith. The triumph of the Resurrection was declared in hell, at the very point of the greatest darkness, the greatest fear and despair, the greatest sorrow and bondage. “Since therefore the children [that God has given the Lord] share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death He might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage” (Hebrews 2.14-15).

Vortex Environmental, Health and Safety, LLC Multi-Employer Worksites

A

s if the workplace safety requirements for your workers were not convoluted enough to navigate, there is the tangle of multi-employer worksites. A multi-employer worksite occurs when two or more companies perform activities at one location. If The Large Company hires the We Do It All Contracting Company to perform a task at The Large Company’s facility, then a multi-employer worksite exists. If an employee of the We Do It All Contracting Company becomes injured because of conditions at The Large Company, who shoulders the responsibility? Is the We Do It All Contracting Company liable, or does the responsibility fall on the shoulders of The Large Company? The answer is maybe. Labor safety laws define four classifications of culpability for multi-employer worksite incidents. The four groups are Creating, Correcting, Controlling, and Exposing employers. The first group is self-explanatory. If the We Do It All Contracting Company digs an unprotected excavation that a worker falls into, then they obviously created the hazard. Depending upon the extent of knowledge of the excavation activities by The Large Company, they may be liable for the injury because they had the responsibility to correct an unprotected excavation and therefore, The Large Company was the Correcting employer and likely the Controlling employer as well. The Controlling Employer is identified as the entity that has overall responsibility for site safety. The Exposing employer is identified as the company that allowed their worker to come in proximity to the excavation and sustain injury, even though

they did not perform the actual excavation. The Exposing Employer is the category most often cited during an incident investigation. This is a simplified example of a Multi-Employer worksite liability matrix. Consider the additional levels of injury-potential and liability exposure with the on-site presence of Acme Welding, Speedy Services, Dripster Plumbing, and the Lift ‘Em High Crane Service. Protect yourself and workers by training your employees how to recognize and mitigate workplace hazards.

Howard Hanna’s Military On The Move® - Quality Real Estate Services for Service Members

B

uying or selling a home tends to be a stressful time, and parts of the process have a tendency to happen where you find yourself saying, “Like I really need THIS on my plate right now”. Getting pre-qualified for a mortgage or getting your current home “picture ready,” to negotiating contracts, and signing your life away, (or at least so it feels,) are just some of the tasks that may happen at an inconvenient time. After all those tasks are complete, you receive your new keys, or hand over your keys to the new family who is ready to enjoy their new home. All those stressful times feel worth it and those moments, to me, are my favorite part of real estate and representing clients. Another one of my favorite parts of real estate is being able to represent military personnel and their families by offering the Military On The Move program through Howard Hanna.

18

This program allows me to offer 20% of my commission earned directly to my military clients as a cash reward. Other moving and home related services are also available through various service providers. Active duty, retired military, Wounded Warriors, and Department of Defense employees may qualify for Military On The Move. Please be sure to keep this program in mind, and let all of your military friends and family know about it. Coming from a military family, growing up in the Hampton Roads area and currently living in Elizabeth City are all reasons why Military On The Move is important to me. With this area having such a robust military presence and history, I feel all should know about this distinguished program. I can be reached at any time to field questions or assist in signing up for the program.

ello everyone! I hope this article finds you in good health and safe during this unusual time, I know we all are anxious to return to our normal outdoor activities as far as hunting and fishing activities. It seems that 3021 hasn’t started off much different than 2020. However vaccines are being given to more and more people which is much better than 2020. I can see this period of social isolation slowly being opened up. The question comes to mind of what can we, outdoorsmen, do during this period. Jamey Brady(NCBA President) sent aa note out to the NCBA. (condensed): I hope that all of us are starting 2021 with the hopes that we are on the downhill run of this pandemic. It has indeed created a whole new world for all of us.I know of several peope that have had the displeasure of this virus and I know it is something no one wants to go through. Hopefully with vaccines out now and continuing to follow CDC guidelines, we will see the end of this soon and get back to some sort of normalcy!!! It’s our goal to to get back to our usual eventful year, but again, all depending on where everything is on the restrictions.”

Frisco Native American Museum— Medicine Bags

M

any people are familiar with the tradition of tribal medicine bags in Native American culture. Kept by a medicine man or medicine woman, the bag contains special items for ceremonies and healing such as seeds, tobacco, cedar, sage, sweetgrass and other herbal remedies as well as special stones and amulets for positive energy, prosperity, and protection against danger. Generally plant, animal, and mineral items are represented in recognition of the belief that all life is interconnected. Synthetic or man-made items may also be included as examples of the human world. Because many native cultures believe wellbeing is connected to spiritual balance, the contents of the medicine bag are considered important not only for maintaining physical health but also for spiritual harmony. Individuals may also carry their own medicine bag as protection and preservation of personal wellbeing and power. Items for the bag are traditionally gathered through personal journeys, known as vision quests and through major life ex-

periences. While very private, contents represent important possessions, memories, and even mementoes of loved ones as well as symbols of ventures and personal accomplishments. Medicine bags vary in size from small pouches that may be worn under clothing to larger ones that require a strap for carrying. Materials for the bag vary as well, but most are made from a soft leather and range from simple construction with no adornments to bags trimmed with fur, feathers, and intricate beading and art work. A number of exquisite small personal pouches and larger medicine bags can be seen on display at the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center. Savory And Sweet Suggestions For Spring

By Rosie Hawthorne

For some reason(s) – Covid, isolation, cabin fever, inordinate amounts of rain, Zoom meetings, home schooling and its resultant spawn of day drinking – this spring has been a long time coming. Thankfully, spring is now here and I have some recipes to usher in this anticipated season. This month, for your culinary pleasure, I’m working with puff pastry. Now, don’t worry - you can buy this flaky dough already made, although one’s life is not complete until one has made puff pastry from scratch. Puff pastry is a light, layered, buttery, multipurpose dough which can be used in sweet or savory dishes, in appetizers, main courses, and desserts. The key word here is “butter.” When you go to the frozen section of the grocery store to buy a package of puff pastry, read the ingredients label and be sure the main ingredient is, in fact, butter. I recommend Dufour puff pastry, available at Fresh Market. It’s the only pastry I can find on the beach with real butter as an ingredient, and listed as the first ingredient, which is as it should be, since ingredients are listed in order of volume. Other brands of puff pastry typically list flour as the dominant ingredient and contain oils, not butter. Keep your puff pastry in the freezer until ready to use, then thaw overnight in refrigerator. Always keep the pastry cold. If the butter starts to melt or the dough gets limp, refrigerate it for 30 minutes or so to firm it up. Carefully unwrap pastry sheet. It will be folded into thirds in the package. To prepare for baking, slice the pastry into thirds, along the existing folds, then cut the three strips into fourths or sixths, depending on how big you want your final servings. Take a small knife and lightly score a border around the edge of each rectangle about ¼” from the outside, then prick the interior of the border with a fork. Bake the pastries at 400° about 15-20 minutes, rotating halfway through, until pastries are crisp and golden brown. Let cool a bit, then remove the interior pricked section so you can fill it. I have two puff pastry presentations for you. The first is a savory asparagus canapé, which can be served as an appetizer or with the entrée. The second is a sweet fruit preparation which makes for a lovely dessert.

Dill And Cheese Sauce 1 TB butter 1 oz. cream cheese 2 TB grated Gruyère cheese 1 TB lemon juice ½ tsp coarse Dijon mustard 1 TB cream Combine all ingredients and heat until melted. Whisk until smooth. Stir in 1 TB chopped fresh dill. Pour sauce over asparagus in pastry shells and sprinkle with lemon zest. Add chopped pistachios, if desired.

Asparagus and Puff Pastry (Makes four appetizers.) ⅓ sheet of puff pastry, cut into fourths (Prepare and bake as instructed above.) 12 asparagus spears To prepare asparagus, hold spear at each end, bend, and let it snap naturally. Discard bottom piece. Slice each spear into 3-4 pieces. Drop into boiling, salted water and cook for about 90 seconds. Immediately drain and plunge spears into ice water bath to stop cooking and set color. Drain and pat dry. Place several spears in each pastry shell then drizzle sauce over top. You could use a classic Hollandaise sauce here, but I’m going with a dill and cream cheese sauce with just a hint of mustard.

Fill pastry shells with blueberries. Drizzle with Yogurt Sauce.

Fruit And Puff Pastry Fill pastry shells with sliced strawberries. Drizzle with chocolate sauce. Chocolate Ganache ¼ cup cream ⅓ cup bittersweet chocolate chips Heat cream until very hot, not boiling. Pour in chocolate chips and let melt. Stir until smooth. Pour over strawberries.

The Great Depression — A reminiscence By Alice B. Yeager and James O. Yeager

Reprinted with permissions from Backwoods Home Magazine Issue #115 • January/February, 2009

(continued from last month)

B

ootleggers were already in business when the Great Depression occurred. The United States had a federal law (1920-1933) that forbade the manufacture, sale, transportation, etc. of alcoholic beverages. This was generally called Prohibition. As could be expected, there were those entrepreneurs who defied the law and went about setting up stills in hidden places usually along spring-fed creeks. Their product was known as rot-gut. Ironically, the rise in the number of stills created more jobs for government employees known as “revenuers.”

In connection with the sale of illegal liquor, sheriffs became aware of certain store owners selling unusual amounts of copper. (Copper was used in making and repairing stills.) Therefore, the sellers would have to restrict, for a time, the amount of copper they handled. Likewise, the sale of sugar. Purchasers swore they needed sugar for canning fruit, preserves, etc. The local sheriff said there couldn’t possibly be that much canning going on. So the amount of sugar sales had to be “monitored.” Some big city gangsters became Robin Hoods when they helped feed people in bread lines. Al Capone was famous for his help in Chicago. I had a friend who was a chorus girl in New York City during the Depression. She once told me that the chorus girls helped fill sacks with food for the poor. The food was supplied by Lucky Luciano, another gangster. In our area, we had some famous ruthless outlaws, mainly bank robbers”Pretty Boy” Floyd, John Dillinger, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, (Bonnie and Clyde). There were others, but these names easily come to mind as they were actually greatly feared by the public because of their lack of pity for their victims. President Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to pull the United States out of the Great Depression. Work programs were created that employed men as well as women. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Works Progress Administration (WPA), National Relief Association (NRA), and the Public Works Administration (PWA) were designed to lift people out of their dire circumstances. Of course, there were the usual jokesters who referred to the workmen as lazy and inclined to lean on their shovels instead of use them. I believe the CCC was the most outstanding of all of the programs. Men flocked to the CCC where they were paid $30 per month with $25 of that going home to families. Leaders were paid a bit more, $45, and assistant leaders

24

$36. Promotion was Army system. The CCC gave men a starting point in life again. They were housed in camps where they were given training in building bridges, roads, dams things that benefited the public. Some men re-enrolled when their time was up as they enjoyed the discipline and security of the Army-styled camps where they were given good meals, clean clothing, and a place to sleep.

And, so it went. Ordinary Americans managing to get through tough times. Just as our country began to recover from The Great Depression, along came World War II. But, that’s another story.

My uncle, W.E. Whatley, learned the trade of stone mason in the CCC and was employed in some of the national and state parks. Many of the picnic areas, bridges, and fireplaces built by the CCC are still in use today. Uncle Ed later returned to his regular profession painting. During the Great Depression, not many folks could afford to hire someone to paint their houses, so jobs for painters were scarce, too. I am not positive, but I believe the NRA was the relief organization that sponsored sewing rooms in which many women were employed. My childhood friend and neighbor, Mrs. Harry N. Bell, was one of those women. She was a former school teacher and was given a job as supervisor in one of the sewing rooms. Some of the things related here seem far fetched to younger people, but bad economic conditions folks losing their homes, banks failing, crime on the rise, prices soaring on everything including groceries and gasoline are not signs of prosperity. It will take some time to remedy our current situation and it will not occur as soon as the new administration takes over despite what the politicians would have us to believe. The Great Depression was not all doom and gloom. There were good times, too. Many of us enjoyed going to our favorite fishing holes not only for the outing, but the fish helped to stretch our food budgets. We had very few concrete swimming pools, so we swam in unpolluted creeks and rivers. Folks were more inclined to gather and play games like checkers, dominoes, and card games. Churches had better attendance than now. Children weren’t encouraged to grow up so fast. They played hopscotch, jumped rope, twirled tops, and did tricks with yo-yos. Older boys and girls played basketball, baseball, softball, skated, etc. There was more physical activity then than playing computer games today, and obesity was not a nationwide problem.

Mrs. Augustus Yeager and sons August Garrett and James Harrel. In order to keep shoes nice for church and special occasions, children went barefoot during warm weather. Many little boys and grown men, too, wore overalls. Clothing was worn until it had to be patched and then worn again.

The Tueller Drill Revisited

A

Part 3

lot of water has gone under the bridge since then and range training has improved. Renowned trainers like John Farnam and Clint Smith were among the first, in my experience, to have expanded on and popularized the concept of moving off of the line of attack as part of your response, although this is not as modern as we might think. You know the saying that there’s not much new under the sun? I was rereading my copy of “Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting,” which was published in the 1930s. In it, Ed McGivern has pictures of how he taught officers in Montana during the 1930s to shoot on the move. At that time, he was probably considered a heretic! I’m sure most range officers thought that what he was doing was too dangerous. So, the idea of moving and shooting is not brand new. Speaking only for myself, I think being able to move then shoot, shoot and then move again is tremendously important. So is moving when you see a potential threat, so you are not standing where the attack was directed. That way you can get inside your adversary’s reaction time, forcing him to react to what you are doing. I have mixed feelings about shooting on the move. I know some people who have trained diligently, and who can shoot reasonably well while moving. For most of us, though, it probably is not a good idea to try shooting while you are moving. Moving, then shooting and getting some hits, then moving again, assessing and finding additional threats, that’s probably better. EJournal: Finding additional threats? How do you train to overcome tunnel vision? Tueller: Once you’ve engaged the threat, if it disappears, runs away or falls down, you need to get the gun out of your face, force yourself to breathe and move your head and eyes. The focal attention gets really intense when shooting, and that’s something we encourage by teaching that to get good hits you have to focus on the front sight. Because your vision is really tunneled in while shooting, you must recognize the tactical imperative to get gun out of your face when the shooting is over. It helps to physically move your head and upper torso. Like anything else, until you have trained to do it and built it into your routine, it won’t happen naturally. People have successfully used this method, and their feedback after confrontations is that they used it and that it worked, but you have to develop the habit before needing it. EJournal: Most of our readers are private citizens who practice concealed carry. With the gun hidden under layers of clothing what precautions should be observed in

the presence of possible attack with a contact weapon? Tueller: That goes back to the issue of reaction and response time. The more time you need to physically access your defensive weapon and put it into action, then you need to have that much more distance that an adversary with a contact weapon would have to cover. The thing to do is to find out how long that is.

act can be based on “crisis rehearsal”. Do some mental imaging, do some training, visualize and mentally see yourself defending yourself, successfully surviving and prevailing. No one knows exactly what we may do, but if we have trained, we have a pretty good idea of our responses. We will respond as we have trained. Act on the threat indicators, and you can remain alive. (conclusion next month)

You could test this with a dummy gun and have a friend role play a bad guy to see how much distance would be covered before you could draw. Another variation I’ve seen on the Tueller Drill is done on a live fire range. The guy representing the attacker starts standing next to the shooter, but runs away from the shooter to the right, left or rear. When he pushes off from the shooter, the shooter draws and engages a target down range. The role player will drop a hat or some object when he hears the first shot. That marks the distance he covered before the first shot. This is something you can do very safely. And please remember: just firing a shot does not mean that the fight is over. EJournal: So you mean that the slower drawing speed, requires longer distance awareness?

https://armedcitizensnetwork.org

Tueller: No defensive weapon or plan is good enough if we are not alert enough to recognize that we have a problem. I teach this as the four “As” – aware, alert, act, and alive. This applies to everything—daily life, driving, and to a self-defense situation. “Aware” means you recognize, believe, accept and understand that there are various kinds of dangers in daily life, and that – yes – it really can happen to you. If this is your mind-set, it is easier to remain properly alert. “Alert” means that you are attentive to your environment, so your physical senses and intuition are turned on and tuned in. Jeff Cooper listed alertness as the first principle of personal defense (Ed. Note: See Cooper’s book Principles of Personal Defense http://www.paladinpress.com/ detail.aspx?ID=1308). When you believe it can happen to you, your brain is geared to look for things that don’t look right; then you can avoid them. In the book “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin DeBecker (https: //www.gavindebecker. com/books-gof.cfm), he writes that to “fear less,” you should trust your feelings. Then “Act.” Take appropriate action based on indicators your brain picks up, often at the subliminal level. Even though our modern, civilized conscious mind isn’t always able to recognize what the threat is. Being prepared to

om Magnuson, the Trading Path Association founder, has studied ancient commercial routes in the southeast, primarily in NC, VA, and SC. His organization has preserved tens of thousands of acres containing old road remnants, a fort, and hamlets that sank back into the ground by convincing local authorities that the land in question would be more valuable as parkland than developed. He is wrapping up his studies with a series of four lectures on several of his key findings. For example, his first lecture, given in February, revealed the extent of trade between indigenous folks in the Sounds with explorers, privateers, and pirates in the 16th and 17th centuries before England entered the picture. The second lecture is scheduled as an open video presentation for May 6th at 7 PM. It will be about Carolina’s first permanent settlement, settled by refugees from Virginia, Maryland, and points north in the 1650s. It persisted until the first decade of the 18th century. At that time, Anglicans took control of the Carolinas, and the first settlers moved into the backcountry using a heretofore unnoted wagon road. The road, known as “Thigpen’s Trace,” was built for a Carolina militia expedition against French settlements around Mobile Bay

and Spain’s fort at St. Augustine, Florida. Yes, a wagon road built between 1702 and 1704 connected England’s deepwater ports in the Chesapeake Bay with Mexico’s Gulf. The third talk will be at 7 pm on the 5th of August, and it will describe the settlers in the backcountry and their long-term influence on North Carolina’s history and values. Late in the 17th century, these settlers, many of whom were Cromwellian soldiers, survivors of England’s Civil War, became Quakers. They had from the beginning been dissenters from the Anglican church, hence their abuse in Catholic Maryland and Anglican Virginia. And they developed some unique tenets in their religious practice, which set them apart from both Pennsylvania Meeting and London Meeting Friends. Not least of these peculiarities was their willingness to purchase land from their indigenous neighbors, marry in with them, and promise never to settle west of the Chowan River. When Anglicans brought their version of law to the Albemarle area, they immediately began settling west of the Chowan. In a short time, the Anglicans’ land salesman was executed for land theft by the Tuscarora peoples in the Coastal Plain and thus began the Tuscarora War. William Blount, Signer of the Constitution In 1749, a future signer of the United States Constitution is born. William Blount would go on to serve as United States Senator for the State of Tennessee. He would also become the only Senator ever to be impeached by the House of Representatives. But Blount was one of the signers of the Constitution! How could matters have degenerated so badly? Presumably, it all began because Blount was obsessed with land. He had pushed for the infamous Land Grab Act of 1783 in North Carolina after the war. That Act opened up millions of acres of land to the west of the Appalachians. Blount took advantage of the opportunity to grab as much land as he could—not all of it in completely honest ways. Soon, he’d obtained an appointment as the territorial governor of the Southwest Territory. When Tennessee was admitted to the Union in 1796, he was elected a U.S. Senator. Naturally, he wasn’t done trying to increase the value of his western lands. He believed that the value of his land would increase if the British were able to seize Spanish possessions in Florida and Louisiana. Thus, he began to furtively support an alliance between a few Indian tribes and the British.

day, the Senate voted overwhelmingly to expel him. A select committee was appointed to investigate the matter.

“Wisdom is the oneness of mind that guides and permeates all things.”

Then, as now, political investigations don’t move too quickly. The impeachment process dragged on for more than a year. Ultimately, Blount refused to appear before the Senate, claiming that it had no jurisdiction over him. Finally, in January 1799, the Senate accepted the argument that impeachment proceedings could not proceed. William Blount was not a “civil officer of the United States within the meaning of the Constitution of the United States”—and he wasn’t even a Senator anymore. He was therefore not “liable to be impeached by the House of Representatives.” The impeachment proceedings were officially dismissed.

― Heraclitus, Fragments

At the state level, Blount’s reputation didn’t suffer too much. He was soon elected to the Tennessee state senate. But at the national level, Blount’s main influence was to establish the precedent that Senators may not be impeached. To order Tara’s books, go to this link: http://www.taraross.com/books/

Perhaps not exactly the way that you want to make your mark in the history books?

He was digging himself in deeper and deeper, wasn’t he?! Unfortunately for Blount, President John Adams was given a copy of a letter that incriminated him in the plot. He transmitted this letter to Congress on July 3, 1797. In the letter, Blount reported to his correspondent that he would “have a hand in the business, and probably shall be at the head of the business on the part of the British.” He commented that “if the Indians act their part, I have no doubt but it will succeed.” The Senate had the letter read in Blount’s presence, but the Senator asked for a day to review his papers and put together his response. The next day, he asked for another delay so he could gather “other evidence to remove suspicion.” None of this was true, of course. In reality, Blount was plotting an escape to North Carolina. On July 7, the House voted to impeach Blount. The next

That Ship That Blocked the Suez Did What Tariffs Do Every Day

Y

ou don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone,” as the saying goes. It was true of toilet paper and hand sanitizer last year, and this past week it was true of the Suez Canal.

Indeed, global shipping experienced a major disruption after a massive cargo ship called the Ever Given ran aground in the canal, blocking traffic in both directions. The ship was blown off course by high winds on March 23, and it got so stuck that it took six days before it could be refloated and cleared. The Suez, of course, is a major bottleneck for world trade, connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Indian Ocean. Typically, the canal is used by 50 ships per day, carrying roughly $400 million worth of goods per hour. Overall, roughly 12 percent of global trade uses the canal, so it’s easy to see why this blockage was such a big deal. Naturally, the disruption shocked the global supply chain, causing shortages and delays for many consumer goods. Oil prices also fluctuated as a result of the blockage, impacting gas prices around the world. Barriers Come in Many Forms The supply chain shock is a stark reminder of just how interconnected the global economy is. Indeed, from gas to clothes to phones, almost everything we use comes from different parts of the world. The vast complexity of the global economy was perhaps best described by Leonard Read in his famous essay I, Pencil. In it, Read challenges us to imagine all the materials that go into making a simple pencil, and all the places they come from: cedar from Oregon, graphite from Sri Lanka, eraser material from Indonesia, etc. When you think about it, global trade really is a miraculous phenomenon, and it has been a primary factor in modern prosperity. With that said, the tremendous benefit that trade brings means that barriers to trade can cause significant problems. The Ever Given blockage is a perfect example of this, and the ensuing disruption in global markets ought to show us just how damaging these barriers can be. But trade barriers don’t usually take the form of a massive ship. Much more often, they take the form of government-imposed trade restrictions, like tariffs, sanctions, and embargoes. In the US, for example, tariffs on sugar have been put in place to protect domestic sugar producers. As the Cato Institute reports, “a limited amount of raw and refined sugar...is allowed to be imported duty free through

Here, of course, our analogy is with a ship, but the point is much the same.

I decided to take quotes about the memories of Currituck residents to describe Mr. Knapp from the family articles published in “THe Heritage of Currituck County, North Carolina, 1670-1985” published by The Albemarle Genealogical Society in 1985. They are attributed by article number. “1932 Home Kitchen Products for Sale. ‘Currituck Products from Home Kitchen’ was started in 1932 from Mr. Joseph P. Knapp’s interest in preserves, jellies, etc. sent him as Christmas gifts from Currituck women’.” #218 and 282 “Curtis and Mamie (Fentress) worked for Mr. Joseph P. Knapp, a noted Currituck County philanthropist who made Knotts Island his part-time home. Curtis was in charge of the large boat used for transporting people and goods from the mainland to Mackey’s Island where the Knapps lived. They had a beautiful southern-style plantation home, complete with white columns and an unheard of backyard pool. Mamie cooked for the Knapps when they were at their Knotts Island home. Later on she was asked to accompany the rest of kitchen staff to their New York Park Avenue mansion to help with the cooking there. She was lonely in New York but said the Knapps were good to their servants, often getting them tickets to events at the Radio City Music Hall.” # 296 “After Mr. J.P. Knapp started contributing money to Currituck County for improving education a traveling library was started. This was a truck like a large van loaded with books. It stopped at each post office and those who were interested in checking out books to read could meet the “Traveling Library,” which was scheduled to be by at a certain time.” #315

“Mrs. Humphries came to Currituck a year after J.P. Knapp built Currituck Elementary (now J.P. Knapp Jr. High). She lived in one of the teacherages he built as well. It was in the teacherage at a party that she met her future husband, John B. Humphries.” # 398 “George Poyner sold to Mr. Joseph P Knapp and the Currituck Board of Education the land on which Knapp School and teacherage is located… My daddy, George, was a farmer and butcher... He bought a boat from Mr. Elmer Walker so he might carry Mr. Knapp back and forth to Mackey’s Island, where he lived... My mother, Cherry, sometimes went over to the Knapp home for a few days, just to iron Mr. Knapp’s pongee shirts and Mrs. Knapp’s pongee dresses… Mr. Knapp especially liked my mother’s gingerbread and sent for her to go over and make it for him. She also went over to cook fruitcake for Christmas for their family and friends from New York.” # 522 “When he was sixteen, Mr. Joseph Knapp hired him (Elijah Tate) as a mechanic to keep his boats and motors in running condition. This was a job he was thoroughly familiar with as he had handled boats and engines since childhood.” # 607 “Mr. Joseph P. Knapp, a generous benefactor of Currituck County interests, had for several years hoped and believed a mutual farm organization would be of great interest and help to the agricultural community of Currituck. The year of 1928 was a disaster for farm families. Many were deep in debt to banks, merchants, and fertilizer companies. Mr. Knapp decided this was the time to begin his “pipe dream” as he expressed it. The first order of business for the new farm organization, after Mr. Knapp had agreed to finance it to get it underway, was to find a full time manager. The position was offered to Emory (Smith)... The name of the new organization was called Currituck County Mutual Exchange. This was in the fall and winter of 1928-1929.” #581

with Lulie (Sanderson) pushing him all the way, because she wanted a burial place to put her mother and father. Mr. Bagley acquired the land from Mr. Bonnie Jones and from there on she spent many hours with Mr. Bagley in clearing, planning and maintenance of the cemetery. The cemetery did not become known as Moyock Memorial Cemetery until Mr. Joseph Knapp was buried there.” # 550 Part of my column in May will add more about his background and what he did for the state of North Carolina as well as Currituck County. Happy Spring!

FINANCIAL FOCUS

Submitted by Chuck O’Keefe Chuck.O’Keefe@edwardjones.com Help Protect Your Family’s Inheritance

Y

ou might contribute to your IRA for decades to help pay for your retirement. But if you don’t need all the money, you may want to leave what’s left to your children or grandchildren. However, if you want to ensure they get the most from this inheritance, you’ll need to do some planning.

Here’s a little background: Up until a couple of years ago, when you left the proceeds of your IRA to your beneficiaries, they could choose to “stretch” required withdrawals over a long period, based on their life expectancies. These required withdrawals were generally taxable, so this “stretch IRA” allowed your beneficiaries to greatly reduce the annual taxes due, while benefiting from longer tax-deferred growth potential. And the younger the beneficiary, the longer the life expectancy and the lower the withdrawals, so this technique would have been especially valuable for your grandchildren or even great-grandchildren. Changes in laws affecting retirement accounts have significantly limited the stretch IRA strategy. Now, most non-spouse beneficiaries must withdraw all assets from the IRA within 10 years of the IRA owner’s death. The beneficiary generally does not have to take out any money during that 10-year period, but at the end of it, the entire balance must be withdrawn – and that could result in a pretty big tax bill. The stretch IRA strategy can still be used for surviving spouses, beneficiaries who are no more than 10 years younger than the deceased IRA owner, and beneficiaries who are chronically ill or disabled. Minor children of the original account owner are also eligible for a stretch IRA – but only until they reach the age of majority, at which time the 10-year rule applies. So, if you want to leave your IRA to family members who don’t meet

B

One possibility is a Roth IRA conversion. You could convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA over your lifetime, so your heirs would receive the Roth IRA. They would still be required to withdraw the assets within 10 years, but unlike with a traditional IRA, Roth IRA withdrawals are generally tax-free. These conversions are taxable, so you’ll want to consult your tax professional in addition to your financial advisor, to determine if this strategy can help you achieve your legacy goals. Another option is to purchase life insurance, which can provide a specific dollar amount to your heirs or be used to help cover additional taxes. This may be especially advantageous if you are 72 or older, in good health, and taking withdrawals – technically called required minimum distributions – from your retirement accounts, such as your traditional IRA and your 401(k). If you don’t really need the money, you can use these withdrawals to pay for some or all of the insurance premiums. Life insurance can’t replace an IRA as a means to save for retirement, though, so you should consult with your financial advisor to make sure you are working toward all your goals. In any case, if you have a sizable IRA or you don’t need the funds that you’re required to take from your retirement accounts, you may want to start thinking about what you want to do with the money. The more thorough your legacy planning, the better your chances of meeting your legacy goals. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. New Life of Currituck by Pastor Dan Bergey

S

ome time ago in a counseling setting, I said to a person, “It sounds to me like you are living with some regret?” Before I could finish asking the question, the person replied, “I have no regrets.” I moved on to another subject, and about 15 minutes later, the person stopped mid-sentence and said, “How would you describe a regret? The dictionary defines regret as sorrow that comes from a circumstance beyond one’s ability to control or power to correct. I went on to explain that it is often not the regret that troubles us but our struggle to forgive ourselves and others in the circumstance. When forgiveness is taken seriously, we can allow change to happen, not in the original circumstance but in our story moving forward. Owning up to our flaws, admitting our mistakes, and asking for forgiveness can transform our lives and keep us from not just having peace and relief from it but also create a new approach to life. King David in the Bible made a terrible mistake by committing adultery and murder. He knew it was wrong but did it anyway. How can a person do something like that and not experience regret? It seems that he thought he got away with it until he was confronted with his sin by the prophet Nathan. When David realized others knew of his sin, he asked God for forgiveness. We can read some of his words as he poured out his heart to God: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit.” Psalms 51:10-12

I Want a Joy Like That

When a regret is forgiven, we separate ourselves from that demand of our flesh. I believe and continue to experience freedom from regret because of asking Jesus Christ to remove my fleshly demands and give me His heart to respond to the challenges of life. I believe that God still creates new hearts and sustains our spirits if we are willing to let Jesus correct our thinking. As regrets are released and we are separated from our fleshly demands, we now have room in our mind and heart for Jesus to give us a love transfusion by the power of the Holy Spirit. With this transfusion, a new life and belief system is born. What a transformation can happen when Jesus takes our flawed and broken affections and mends them with His affections!

After a few months of counseling the person, they not only began to realize the regrets they carried but began a process of forgiveness. As they went through this process, flawed and broken affections started to be uncovered, and as they appeared, we dealt with them. These affections were replaced with affections of Jesus Christ, and the resulting transformation changed this person’s life. We pray you will learn to live a life with no regrets.

Yes, God can create a clean heart. David wanted God to create inside of him a new heart. Why did David need a new heart? Because the heart he was listening to and acting upon was demanding to satisfy his flesh. Our flesh wants what we want when we want. I call it an affection, like a love, that we think will satisfy a longing in our heart to be or feel loved. Affections can demand that we always be right or be heard. Affections often demand freedoms and self-gratifications without the regard for the interests of others. So, you see, our lives can very quickly build a trail of regrets, each one demanding a greater need for love and a greater demand of your fleshly desires which, in turn, generally lead to a longer list of

Habitat for Humanity

by Jane Elfring

E

lizabeth City Habitat for Humanity recently celebrated Debra Barcliff’s mortgage payoff with a short ceremony at Taylor Mueller Realty. “We are very happy to celebrate this event with Mrs. Barcliff,” said Erica Ramjohn, President of Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity. “This is a great milestone for her and our affiliate.” Mrs. Barcliff and her late husband Roosevelt purchased the first house built by Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity in 1996. At the time they purchased the house for their family of six, Mr. Barcliff worked as a custodian at the Extension Office and Mrs. Barcliff had just started a long-term sub job at Sheep-Harney Elementary School. Mr. Barcliff died in 2011 and several years later Mrs. Barcliff herself had health issues that resulted in her being placed on life support. During these periods of health issues, the board of directors put her mortgage in forebearance and she resumed payments when her health improved. Her accomplishment gives us a chance to highlight two things about Habitat houses: Habitat houses are not free. Homeowners must qualify for the houses and be able to pay the mortgage. This is a zero-interest mortgage. Their payment covers principal, taxes and insurance. They must also be willing to complete sweat equity hours on the construction of their house and have a need which we verify during a home visit. Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity does not receive outside funding for the construction of houses. Each affiliate is chartered by Habitat for Humanity International but receives no funding from them. We follow their operations guidelines, but we are financially independent of them. Homeowner payments from our other houses and purchases at our store are used to purchase materials for new house construction. These payments do not cover all of the expenses involved in home construction.

American Legion Materials have increased significantly since the Barcliff house was built in 1996. In the past year alone, building costs have increased by at least 20%. In addition, some of the corporations that donate to Habitat affiliates have been unable to do so this year due to the pandemic and resulting shortages.

William Paul Stallings Post 126

“Our homeowner payments usually provide about $36,000 per year for our building fund, not nearly enough to cover the cost of a new house construction. We apply for grants to help defray costs, but we need community support for our building projects,” says Jane Elfring, Vice-President of Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity. “Individual and corporate sponsorships help us defray costs and enable us to build more houses. We have been blessed on our current project with donations from B&M Contractors, H&H Electric, Mr. Roger’s Windows, ABC Supply and Homefix Remodeling but there are still many items that need to be purchased. Costs of kitchen cabinets, flooring, the driveway, sheetrock and other accessories have totaled nearly $15,000.” Anyone wishing to donate can designate their gift to be used for a particular purpose such as the purchase of kitchen cabinets or designate for the building fund. Any individuals or businesses who would like to contribute to our building fund should contact Norma James at Taylor Mueller Realty, 252331-2233.

The Pasquotank County Confederate Memorial – The Guardian of the Dead By – H. Edward Phillips III, Esq.

Part 1 - Part 2 next month

M

any who were born in the South have never really thought much about the Confederate Memorials that have been erected since the end of the Civil War. We find these objects of remembrance at county courthouses, cemeteries, and other public spaces. A very vocal minority of people have formed their narrative to raise questions and assert a story that misconstrues the very nature of memorialization. First, we hear that these monuments were not built immediately after the war. There is a reason, and it is a simple fact, the majority of the communities in the South were financially devastated after four years of war. Only a handful of post-Civil War monuments were established within the immediate five-to-ten-year period following the war both North and South. You can search these facts for yourself if you are not inclined to believe me. We as a people tend to memorialize wars and the people who fought and died in them many years, and even decades after the fact. As yourself, when was the National World War II Memorial established? The answer is that the memorial was constructed between 2001-2004, being dedicated by then President Bush on April 29, 2004. By way of historical information, this was over fifty-eight years after the end of the most devastating conflict in human history. This is even true of ego-filed emperors such as Napoleon, whose Arc de Triomphe in Paris was built after his death, being completed in 1836, despite having been commissioned in 1806, following his victory at Austerlitz the previous year. In other words, monuments to dedicated to the war dead, military leaders and the like are not erected after the shooting stops. Rather, they are erected when communities raise the funding as they are also are trying to ensure that the aging veterans are honored for their sacrifices and the dead are remembered. Also, up until modern warfare, the dead of earlier wars, especially those of the losing side are typically buried in mass graves upon the battlefields where they fell. What does that mean in relation to Civil War memorials? They are grave markers built by communities to remember their family members. Returning back to the poverty of the South following the war, I knew this to be a fact even as a child in the 1970’s when my family would make our yearly pilgrimage from Massachusetts to my father’s home in East Tennessee. Even then, the economic impact of the Civil War was still felt as stagnation and poverty

CarolinaEast Real Estate Rene Sawyer Broker

were ever present. Moreover, East Tennessee during the war was occupied territory because of its strong Pro-Union sentiment. This is true as all of my paternal great-great grandfathers fought for the Union. Why do I tell you this? Because, one needs to understand the nuance of history, and the fact that the story of the American Civil War cannot be boiled down to a one-minute sound-bite. Of course, despite the strong Union and anti-slave sentiment in my family, a number of my ancestors fought for the Confederacy – the brothers, sons, fathers and cousins of my great-great grandfathers. Another, argument raised by those who wish to topple historic monuments and memorials is that they were established during the Jim Crow period. I think everyone needs to be reminded that Jim Crow was not exclusively a Southern institution, rather it was spread throughout the nation – North, South, East and West. Additionally, the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U.S. 537 (May18, 1896), in which the Supreme Court relied in part on a decision by the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts in the case of Roberts v. City of Boston, 5 Cush. 198, and that court “held that the general school committee of Boston had power to make provision for the instruction of colored children in separate schools established exclusively for them, and to prohibit their attendance upon the other schools.” See Plessy, at 544. At the same time Plessy v. Ferguson was decided, memorials to the Civil War, North and South were being planned, funded and erected. The timing had nothing to do with Jim Crow, rather it had to do with anniversary dates of the beginning and the end of the war. (Continued next month).

f all the retirement gigs I have enjoyed, none have been as satisfying as my time teaching community college. As noted in a previous post, I taught chemistry (the central science, “the toughest course in high school”, etc.). Community college was a valuable start in higher education for a couple of my family members. Without this sounding like a poorly written resume, I taught courses in three different systems in Maryland and Virginia, all as an “adjunct professor”, spanning about two decades. This fancy, high sounding title has been called the “stoop labor” of the industry. It didn’t pay all that well, there was no tenure in any meaningful sense, and no job security. It was, however, the highlight of my working career. I also taught in high school for several years, including a year of Virginia Governors.School. I taught undergraduates for a year or two at what is now called University of Mary Washington. My students at the various “junior colleges”, though, were special to me. As a group, these people tend to be a little older. Many had been through the school of hard knocks. They were more focused on why they were there, and what they wanted as a professional goal. Near the end of my “career”, I taught mainly nurse wannabees. The course was titled ”Chemistry for Nurses “, and was the only chemistry course needed to qualify as an RN. (By contrast, a niece of mine took several chemistry courses at Villanova University in the

mid-70s for her degree). To further add insult, the course had no laboratory! These kids (pardon me for use of the term; at my age, anybody under age 60 or so is a kid to me) had more complicated lives and struggles than most late-teen undergrads. I tried to be as flexible with assignments as I could be. One overarching characteristic of most of them was “hustle”. They were anxious to better their professional lives. I had a few rules: -No question is stupid, except the ones you censor yourself from asking. -I assigned homework problems. You didn’t need to do them, unless you were interested in succeeding. Exams were based on the assigned problems.

something to do with this. I sure hope so. We need all the help we can get. Now that we seem, as a nation, to have loosened restraints on participation by women in professions, it’s time to get guys back into the game. Our survival as a species may very well depend on it. Male participation has been dropping in the professions, dating back to when I was teaching. (When I was hired to teach in high school, lack of participation by girls in science classes was flagged to me as a problem). Have times ever changed! The drop in enrollment in these institutions comes as proposals are being considered at the federal level to provide free (or reduced) tuition. This is part of increasing awareness of our need for skilled workers. Back in my day, more than a half century ago, high school graduation was sufficient for most occupations paying a livable wage. This just doesn’t cut it anymore.

-Exams were open book. Life is an open book. Having to memorize physical constants and facts is a waste of brain power. -What to call me? Mister, or Professor. Don’t call me “Doctor”. I haven’t earned it, and I worked for a living. Unfortuntely, I saw a lengthy article in The Washington Post earlier this week. Seems like community college enrollment is down nationwide. Ophthalmologists Urge Eye Protection for Recreational and Professional Sports

A

lbemarle Eye Center and Precision Eye Care (AECPEC) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology reminds parents, coaches, and athletes that one simple step can prevent most sports-related eye injuries

New research shows that about 30,000 people in the U.S. go to emergency departments each year with sports-related eye injuries, a substantially higher estimate than previously reported. This April during Sports Eye Safety Month, AECPEC and the American Academy of Ophthalmology remind the public that the right protective eyewear is the best defense against eye injury. Three sports accounted for almost half of all trips to the emergency room: basketball, baseball, and air/paintball guns. Sports-related injuries can range from corneal abrasions and bruises on the lids to more serious, vision-threatening internal injuries, such as a retinal detachment and internal bleeding. Ophthalmologists — physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care — continue to remind the public that most sports-related eye injuries are avoidable. Here are some tips for both the professional athlete and the Little League star to stay safe: • Athletes should wear sports eye protection that

meets requirements set by appropriate organizations. • Parents should make sure that children wear eye protection. Most often, those who sustain sports-related eye injuries are 18 years old or younger. • Eye protection can weaken with age and may no longer provide adequate protection. Consider replacing when damaged or yellowed. • For basketball, racquet sports, soccer and field hockey, wear protective eyewear with polycarbonate lenses. • Athletes who wear contacts or glasses should also wear appropriate protective eyewear. Contacts offer no protection and glasses do not provide enough defense. • Professional athletes should also wear sports goggles that meet national standards. “I’ve treated many patients with eye trauma because of an unintentional blow to the face,” said Rahul N. Khurana, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “Athletes often engage in these seemingly safe, yet rugged, high-impact sports with zero awareness about the potential risk factors. This is why eye protection is critical and can greatly reduce the number of emergency room visits treated each year.”

NEW HOPE for You by Pastor Greg Brinson

T

his past year has been difficult for so many people. We could all use some more love! I have yet to have anyone tell me that they were getting too much love or encouragement. I don’t think that is going to happen! However I have met a lot of people who are starving for real love. Someone can have a thousand Facebook friends and still be lonely. We have real problems in life that can only be handled with God’s help and many times that comes in the form of a real friend. I’ll be celebrating another birthday this month. Birthdays are a good time to take inventory of your life. The Lord has blessed me with a wonderful wife and four grown children. I have some amazing friends and I get to pastor an awesome church - New Hope Christian Fellowship in Elizabeth City. I believe that we are blessed to be a blessing and one of the ways we can bless others is by sharing the truth of God’s Word. The Bible says, “As a man thinks in his heart so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7) How’s your thought life? How much time do you spend worrying about things? Jesus said “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”(Matthew 6:27) Worrying won’t add a single hour but it sure can subtract some.

A good prescription for worry is to spend some time every day in God’s Word and in prayer. Your thinking will change when you talk and listen to the one who said, “Cast all your cares on me for I care for you.” (I Peter 5:7) Some translations say “anxieties or worries”. Stop carrying something you were not created to carry. Life is better when I give my burdens and worries to God. Let’s not only give our burdens to God, let’s also give him our praises. The doxology that many people grew up singing in church says, “Praise God from whom all blessing flow”. We all have a lot to be thankful for. The Bible says, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”(Psalm 150:6) Praise and worship isn’t something that just takes place on Sundays - it is a way of life! I would like to finish by sharing a passage that has really helped me and countless others, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”(Philippians 4:6-7). You can reach me at newhopeprecher@yahoo.com . Eleanora Fagan (a.k.a. Billie Holiday)

I

decided to give a short bio about Billie Holiday (an American jazz and swing music singer nicknamed “Lady Day”) (please lookup and read the extended complete bio also the movie that is now streaming, Billie Holiday vs the United States) whose born name is Eleanora Fagan. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to an African American unwed teenage couple Sara Julia “Sadie” Fagan and Clarence Halliday. Sara moved to Philadelphia at age 19, after she was evicted from her parents’ home in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland, for becoming pregnant. With no support she made arrangements with her older, married half-sister, Eva Miller, for Eleanora to stay with her in Baltimore. Eleanora grew up in Baltimore and had an exceedingly difficult childhood. Her mother often took what were then known as “transportation Jobs”, serving on passenger railroads. She suffered from her mother’s absences and being in others’ care for her first decade of life. After attending kindergarten, she frequently skipped school, and her truancy resulted in her being brought before the juvenile court, when she was nine years old. She dropped out of school at 11 years old. At age 12 she found a job running errands in a brothel, and she scrubbed marble steps as well as kitchen and bathroom floors of neighborhood homes. Around this time, she heard the music of Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith. In early 1929, Eleanora joined her mother in Harlem. Her mother became a prostitute at a brothel and Eleanora, at age 14, became a victim of sexual trafficking at $5 per client. The house was raided and Eleanora and her mother were sent to prison for a short while.

As a young teenager, Eleanora started singing in nightclubs in Harlem. She took her professional pseudonym from Billie Dove, an actress she admired, and Clarence Halliday, her father’s birth surname, but eventually changed it to “Holiday”. As her reputation grew, she played in many more clubs. At age 17 Billie replaced the singer at Covan’s, a club on West 132nd. Producer John Hammond first heard Holiday there and arranged for her to make her recording debut at age 18, in November 1933, with Benny Goodman. In 1935 she had a small role as a woman abused by her lover in a Duke Ellington musical short film. Holiday was introduced to “Strange Fruit”, a song based on a poem about lynching written by Abel Meeropol, a Jewish schoolteacher from the Bronx (he used the pseudonym “Lewis Allan” for the poem). Holiday said that the imagery of the song reminded her of her father’s death. He was denied medical treatment for a fatal lung disorder because of racial prejudice. By 1947 Billie was at her commercial peak, having made $250,000 in the three previous years. The same year she was arrested for drug possession. The drug possession conviction caused her to lose her New York City Cabaret Card which prevented her from working anywhere that sold alcohol. She performed three times to sold-out crowds at Carnegie Hall and other places afterwards. In early 1959, Holiday was diagnosed with cirrhosis. She was in the hospital f or treatment of heart and liver disease when the FBI, who have been after her since 1939, arrested her and handcuffed her to the bed for drug possession. She died July 17, 1959 at 44 years of age and $.70 in her bank account.

I

n the last few weeks our dear friend Shannon Rose, her husband Kenny, and their 10yr old son Kenton have been processing the news that she has a long journey ahead of her. At just 39 years of age, cancer has left an ugly mark on her ovary, breast, shoulder, rib, and spine. She is currently in radiation treatment and having ovarian surgery on March 26th. We ask that you join us in prayer for complete healing as she goes through the next few months of treatment. We know God has a plan and she is just the vessel being used to show his love and healing power. Family and friends are rallying together to help them get through this in many ways. She will be going to Duke on April 1st for the best treatments available. The medical bills are going to be a burden and are already starting to roll in. If you feel it in your heart to help relieve some of the financial burdens please know how much they appreciate it. The non-profit donation to Jarvisburg Church of Christ will go directly to the family with no fees or tax burdens. Please share with your friends and businesses so we can get them as much financial relief as we can. Thank you DONATIONS CAN BE MADE ON THE JCC WEBSITE IN OUR GIVING SECTION UNDER THE SHANNON ROSE CANCER FUND OR IF YOU WISH TO WRITE A CHECK MAKE IT OUT TO JARVISBURG CHURCH OF CHRIST WITH THE MEMO OF SHANNON ROSE: JARVISBURGCHURCHOFCHRIST.COM OR 121 FORBES ROAD JARVISBURG, NC 27947
