MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-CHANCELLOR Prof Chris Nhlapo

We wanted to acknowledge the many years of sacrifice and hard work that not only you, but also your loved ones, have dedicated to this journey. That is why, instead of a mass conferral of qualifications, we opted for a more personalised version of a virtual graduation. While I will miss not being able to meet with you all personally as you walk across the stage, I hope this event gives you as much fulfilment and joy.

Lifelong learning will keep you a step ahead of the pack and capable of adapting to a constantly changing world. As a graduate of CPUT, you join a vast network of successful individuals who want to see you, and the Institution flourish. I hope that as you rise through your own industry ranks, that you will also open the doors of opportunity to others when they knock. Thank you. Vice-Chancellor Prof Chris Nhlapo

TITLE: MARKETING AND MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE SECTOR NON-PROFIT ORGANISATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA NPOs deliver critical services to the society through social value creation; they focus on the gap in the society that is not addressed by corporate or governmental sectors. However, the industry in which they operate has become saturated, resulting in intense competition for funding. Sustainability has emerged to be a critical issue for these organisations, as they have to sustain a long-term, perpetual need with limited funding. Literature concluded that adopting marketing strategies, and business-oriented methods and practices, can contribute and enable these organisations to achieve sustainability. This is the first study in South Africa to date that has developed a framework on how these marketing strategies and business-oriented methods and practices can be adopted to improve NPO sustainability.

TITLE: TEACHING AND LEARNING THRESHOLD CONCEPTS IN RADIATION PHYSICS FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE Through the theoretical lenses of Legitimation Code Theory’s Semantics dimension and the Threshold Concept Framework, the study examines teaching and learning threshold concepts in radiation physics; an underpinning knowledge area for safe radiation therapy practice. The study addresses the challenges and complexities associated with teaching and learning threshold concepts. The main and original contribution of the study comes from the translation device developed that demonstrates the use of epistemic semantic gravity to unpack threshold concepts in the first-year radiation physics curriculum. The findings show that students’ mastery of threshold concepts in radiation physics is critical for safe and accurate practice.

TITLE: ULTRASOUND INVESTIGATION OF RISK FACTORS FOR EXTRACRANIAL VASCULAR PATHOLOGY IN PATIENTS WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS Cerebral hypoperfusion and impaired cerebral venous drainage are reported to be risk factors for multiple sclerosis (MS). Furthermore, lifestyle and biochemistry have significant effects on the brain and vascular system. This study used ultrasound to investigate risk factors for extracranial vascular disease in patients with MS. The major neck vessels were scanned to determine patency, carotid intima media thickness, carotid artery cross-sectional diameters, internal jugular vein cross-sectional area, stenosis, occlusions and abnormal blood flow patterns. Several significant positive and negative associations between extracranial vascular ultrasound variables and genetic, lifestyle, biochemical and vascular factors, as well as MS disability were demonstrated in this study. Four novel MS findings associated with vascular haemodynamics and anatomy were uncovered in this study. Further studies are needed to establish the clinical relevance of these new findings.

TITLE: IMPACT OF COVER CROP SPECIES, TERMINATION STAGE AND TERMINATION METHOD ON SOIL NITROGEN, ORGANIC CARBON AND ENZYME ACTIVITIES Adewole Adetunji obtained an MTech Agriculture at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in 2015. To mitigate the rapid deteriorating effects of climate change on agricultural soils, sustainable crop and soil management practice are suddenly becoming popular all over the world. Adewole examined the short-term effect of cover crop species and management on soil chemical and enzyme activity under greenhouse and field conditions. The study showed that cover crops and growth termination stages have greater impact on soil chemical and enzyme activities, which included Ă&#x;-glucosidase, phosphatase and urease, than termination methods. The study suggests that cover crop quality (C:N ratio) and termination stages should be considered when selecting management methods that improve soil fertility. The study constitutes a new report on national and global understandings of the integration of different cover crop and management practices in a single consolidated research, and therefore extends our knowledge of the appropriate soil fertility management practices in the grape-based farming system of the Western Cape Province. His research work resulted in five publications, including a book chapter and four articles in accredited journals. He also presented his research work at two international conferences, and received the best paper award at one.

TITLE: THE EFFECT OF KAIZEN-BASED TRAINING ON THE WORK-READINESS OF GRADUATES FROM SOUTH AFRICAN UNIVERSITIES OF TECHNOLOGY This doctoral study evaluated an educational intervention known as the Employability Improvement Programme. This intervention was supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and was intended to improve the work-readiness of University of Technology students. The study found that the programme supported students’ acquisition of interpersonal skills and dispositions towards work-readiness, but skills that were related to workplace relations in context, professional values, and a sense of a broader contribution to society were largely absent. The study recommended that longer-term, more integrated and better contextualised forms of training are necessary for attaining work-readiness in the complex South African work context.

TITLE: TEACHER EDUCATORS’ INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES IN PREPARING PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS TO TEACH WITH DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IN THE 21ST CENTURY The study explored teacher educators’ (TrEd’s) technological-enhanced teaching strategies for 21st century quality teaching and learning. This qualitative study used online surveys, one-on-one semi-structured interviews, observations and focus group interviews to collect data. Both inductive and deductive methods were used to analyse the data collected. The findings revealed that teacher educators’ use of technology is limited, hence the educators lack awareness of the effectiveness of digital tools in their training of teachers. Based on the findings, the candidate developed a model that can be used by teacher educators to teach with technology. Two conference proceedings and two journal articles have already been published from the thesis.

SUPERVISOR Prof SKO Ntwampe CO-SUPERVISOR Dr Moses Basitere

TITLE: ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF HIGH STRENGTH WASTEWATER IN HIGH RATE ANAEROBIC BIOREACTOR SYSTEMS: CASE OF POULTRY SLAUGHTERHOUSE WASTEWATER (PSW) Mahomet Njoya was born in Yaounde, in the capital city of Cameroon. He enrolled for a Chemical Engineering course at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2013, obtained his Bachelor degree in 2016, and completed a Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering (cum laude) in 2017. His doctoral research identified and addressed operational challenges crippling the performance of high rate anaerobic treatment of high strength wastewater, specifically poultry slaughterhouse wastewater (PSW). These challenges included the poor selection of suitable packing materials for high rate anaerobic bioreactor underdrain systems, the entrapment of biogas in anaerobic granular beds, the poor distribution of substrate to the biomass in high rate anaerobic systems, the lack of predictability of the quality of the PSW from minimum water quality assessment parameters. These shortcomings were addressed through the development of a series of analysis methods geared towards determining the suitability of packing materials; the development of correlations relating water quality assessments parameters towards their characterisation and the minimisation of required analyses; and the adoption of a new bioreactor configuration for enhanced treatment of high strength wastewater. The performance of this new configuration outperformed highly acclaimed existing technologies such as the EGSB and the SGBR. Subsequently, the performance of down-flow high rate anaerobic bioreactors was modelled to predict its efficiency and plant footprint. This doctoral research resulted in two DHET-accredited articles and two book chapters.

TITLE: FUEL CELL POWER CONDITIONING MULTIPHASE CONVERTER FOR 1400 VDC MEGAWATTS STACKS Multilevel inverters are getting more popularity and attractiveness as compared to conventional inverters in high voltage and high-power applications. These inverters are suitable for harmonic mitigation in high-power applications, whereby switching devices are unable to function at high switching frequencies. For a given application, the choice of appropriate multilevel topology and its control scheme are not defined, and depend on various engineering compromises. This research focused on the three-level diode clamped inverters. The aim was to model and control a three-level diode clamped inverter for the grid connection of a megawatt fuel cell stack. The designed system considered a 1.54 MW plant operating 1400V DC proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack, and a 1.26 MW three-level diode clamped inverter with a nominal voltage of 600 V and a LCL filter which is designed to reduce harmonics and meet the standards such as IEEE 519 and IEC 61000-3-6. The inverter control scheme comprised voltage and current regulators to provide a good power factor and satisfy synchronisation requirements with the grid. The frequency and phase are synchronised with those of the grid through a phase locked loop. The developed system performed very well with a low total harmonic distortion of about 0.35% for the voltage and 0.19% for the current. Four peer reviewed journal and international conference publications emanated from this research.

TITLE: DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN INTEGRATED SOLAR PANEL ANTENNA FOR SMALL SATELLITES Vernon Pete Davids’ thesis focused on the design of an integrated solar panel antenna for use on low Earth orbit satellites. Solar panels, sensors and antennas all compete for a surface area on the satellite, and this is specifically relevant to small satellites, such as CubeSats. The purpose of this research was to combine the antenna and the solar panel functionality as a single component; thus, optimally utilising the satellite’s surface area. This was achieved by using an optically transparent rectangular dielectric resonator antenna made of ceramic glass on top of a triple-junction gallium arsenide solar cell. Several dielectric resonator antenna elements were combined into an array with a back-to-back Yagi-Uda topology. An array feeding network was proposed that can steer the radiation beam with a constant flux density profile over steering angle using a single digital phase shifter. Several numerical techniques verified the design, and a prototype was built and measured. The array achieved a beam steering limit of ±66° with a measured maximum gain of 11.4 dBi. The output from his thesis includes one accredited journal and two peer reviewed international conference publications.

TITLE: SUSTAINABLE OFF-GRID ELECTRICITY SUPPLY USING A LTE COMMUNICATION MODEL FOR RURAL TOWNS IN SOUTH AFRICA Sustainable off-grid systems with a reliable communication backbone is essential in the arena of energy access in South Africa. One of the most important challenges and questions the thesis answered, was how effective communication platforms would be deployed within such systems that would have highly efficient, fast, reliable and very secure characteristics to transmit and respond to any type of fault conditions which may occur within distributed renewable energy systems. This is particularly relevant in the expansion of such networks into the Smart Grid. For the purpose of this thesis, different communication networks was studied, compared and modelled to determine their suitability for deployment within sustainable off-grid networks to meet the challenge of smart grid integration. There are many wireless technologies available, such as Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs), 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) release, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Long-Term Evolution (LTE). Cognitive radios are intelligent software defined radios (SDRs) that efficiently utilise the unused regions of the frequency spectrum to achieve higher data rates. The CRNs, however, is an unlicensed technology which suffers from lower Quality of Service (QoS) and high latency problems. LTE, which is commercially expanding under the 3GPP release, is a promising licensed technology which addresses issues of QoS and latency. The utilisation of existing LTE networks in the model proposed by the thesis, showed a greatly reduced cost of operation. Such an adoption would lead to expansion during the introduction phase of SG deployment in South Africa. The thesis lead to several publications in peer reviewed journals and conferences.

TITLE: DESIGN INTERVENTIONS FOR RE-CONCEPTUALISING SUSTAINABLE GRAPHIC DESIGN PRACTICES IN GHANA This research examined graphic design practices through the lens of the Sustainability Development Analytical Grid – in the Ghanaian context. It explored the effects of design decisions in the pre-press, press and post-press activities as a means for reconceptualising sustainable graphic design. The main and original contribution of the study comes from the amalgamation of the Sustainability Development Analytical Grid and Activity Theory to promote cosmopolitan localism. This offers graphic designers room to develop local solutions that have global underpinning, indicating that the majority of the world has alternative solutions to problems and must be allowed to develop resilience through innovation.

TITLE: AUTOMATED WEIGH-IN-MOTION THROUGH VEHICULAR TELEMATICS AND MACHINE LEARNING A novel weigh-in-motion (WIM) method based on the multiple measurement information from vehicular telematics (VT) and machine learning (ML) model is proposed. A prototype system is developed to evaluate the concept. The contribution of this research is threefold: practical, theoretical, and methodological. Artefact design and development contribute to the practical aspect of the research. The theoretical aspects of this research were covered by introducing a new concept that, under certain engines and environment conditions, the weight of a vehicle influences the values of the engine parameters. Application of Concept-Knowledge (C-K) design theory contributed to the methodological contribution of this research.
