AMERICAN GIRL 35 YEARS OF STRONG CHARACTERS

WELCOME First and foremost, welcome to the Changnon-Piper Museum of Toys and Collectibles. A new and virtual museum, launched in 2021, showcasing the incredible collection of toys and collectibles from the Changnon-Piper Family Trust. With over 5,000 objects, we are grateful that the family has chosen us to showcase these artifacts to the public for the first time. Our inaugural exhibit, American Girl: 35 Years of Strong Characters, showcases Blake Changnon’s extensive American Girl collection and celebrates the toy company’s 35th anniversary of creating strong, courageous and heroic characters living and growing up in different times in America’s history. Introduced in 1986 by founder Pleasant T. Rowland, the flagship line of Historical Characters includes dolls, books and historically accurate clothing, accessories and furniture that children can use to play out the stories of the characters. You will learn that each character is not simply a doll accompanied by toys, but a heroine of their own story that inspires and connects children to develop their own attributes of character. Ultimately becoming a role model for children and teaching them the educating power of being true to oneself. As you flip through these pages, you will meet 16 different characters from pivotal times in history and a small selection of their collection. In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to read more about American Girl, how they create characters, the woman behind the idea and the individual behind this great collection you see here. We welcome you to the Changnon-Piper Museum of Toys and Collectibles and hope you enjoy our first exhibit, American Girl: 35 Years of Strong Characters. We look forward to sharing more from this trust in the years to come.

Sincerely, Blake Changnon

MEET PLEASANT ROWLAND HOW AN IDEA SPARKED A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY This article was originally published by The Toy Association for the 21st Annual TOTY Awards Ceremony in recognition of Pleasant Rowland’s induction into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame. Visit toyassociation.org to read the article and learn more. Pleasant T. Rowland founded American Girl, originally known as Pleasant Company, nearly 35 years ago, believing that great stories with aspirational characters could inspire girls to make their own positive mark on the world. Since then, American Girl has been a trusted partner in empowering girls with confidence and character. After an inspiring trip to Colonial Williamsburg in 1986, Pleasant combined her love of American history and her commitment to high-quality educational products to create The American Girls Collection, a line of historically-accurate books, dolls, and accessories representing pivotal times in America’s past.

The collection has been lauded for its ability to bring history to life for millions of children through imaginative play.

and

As a trailblazer in creating purposeful play, Pleasant expanded her vision beyond the initial collection with the launch of a contemporary line, now called Truly Me, that celebrates girls’ individuality with dolls featuring a diverse array of face shapes, skin tones, eye colors, and hairstyles, plus realistic accessories. A line of advice books, Smart Girls’ Guides, followed to give kids the tools to navigate the ups and downs of growing up and included the bestselling body book for girls, The Care and Keeping of You, which is a rite of passage book among tweens today. To date, the advice series has sold nearly 12 million copies. To give voice to a diverse range of personalities, Pleasant also created the Girl of the Year line, featuring contemporary characters who experience modern-day issues and inspire girls to make a difference. To support the littlest American girls, Pleasant also created Bitty Baby, a nurturing line of diverse baby dolls. As American Girl grew in popularity and sales, major toy companies took notice, and Mattel acquired the brand in 1998.

Shortly thereafter, Pleasant fulfilled her dream of opening an experiential retail store, American Girl Place-Chicago, where— for the first time—fans could shop the product in person and immerse themselves in a unique dining experience with their dolls; a live theater performance; and a Doll Hair Salon. To date, American Girl has welcomed 100+ million visitors to its popular retail stores and has been recognized as a premier model for experiential retail. Pleasant also has been widely celebrated for her generous philanthropic efforts, providing millions to children’s charities nationwide. Today, guided by Pleasant’s original vision, American Girl has grown into one of the nation’s most beloved brands. Through powerful stories of courageous heroines, American Girl has helped shape an entire generation of women of character—a testament to the spirit and ingenuity of the company’s remarkable founder.

HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN GIRL HISTORICAL CHARACTERS Part of this article was originally published by American Girl Wiki in 2021. Visit americangirl.fandom.com to read the entire article and explore other articles. The Beginning Pleasant Rowland gave two reasons for her initial creation of the line. One reason was to provide a doll the same age as the child who would be playing with it and present it as a friend rather than a baby to take care of or an adult to be like in the future. The other reason was to offer a chance to teach history to children using the method of a character near their age, offering a smaller personal focus for largely arching historical time periods and giving a personal focus from a character whom they could relate to. The Flagship Line The Historical Characters refers to the flagship American Girl doll collection that focuses on the lives of various historical characters through American history. First known as The American Girls Collection, the line was rebranded in 2014 as BeForever with new “meet outfits,” new collections and changes to books. The BeForever name was dropped in 2019 with the line reverting back to Historical Characters, while still keeping many of the changes implemented from BeForever such as the newer and brighter “meet outfits” and accessories. Meet Outfits and Accessories In the American Girl: 35 Years of Strong Characters exhibit, the Changnon-Piper Museum of Toys and Collectibles showcases the historical characters in their current or more recent “meet outfits” and accessories. However, we want to take this moment to showcase historical characters in their original and current “meet outfits” and accessories. Note: The museum is only showcasing historical characters who have had two or more different “meet outfits” and accessories.

Kaya, 1764

Introduced to children in 2002, Kaya and her stories represent Indigenous America in a region prior to European settlement in the Pacific Northwest. Renowned author Janet Beeler Shaw wrote Kaya’s stories. Meet Kaya, a Native American girl from the Nimíipuu, or Nez Perce tribe. Living in the Pacific Northwest in 1764, Kaya dreams of racing her beautiful mare, Steps High. When her father warns Kaya that Steps High is not ready and to watch her younger brothers, she ignores his advice and accepts a racing challenge from an annoying boy. However, Kaya forgets to watch her brothers and her negligence earns her an awful nickname of Magpie, a little bird who only thinks of herself. Kaya is embarrassed and wants to get rid of the nickname, but her friends won’t let her forget. What can Kaya do to prove to her elders that she doesn’t only think of herself?

Kaya’s Escape When enemy raiders invade their village, Kaya’s mother tells her to run into the woods with her blind sister, Speaking Rain. However, Kaya also wants to help and protect her horse, Steps High. Unsure what to do, Kaya, her sister and her mare are captured! When they reach the enemy’s camp, Kaya and Speaking Rain meet a captured Salish boy named, Two Hawks. Kaya and Two Hawks devise a plan to escape, but how will they help Speaking Rain, Kaya’s blind sister escape as well?

Kaya’s Hero Kaya meets a young warrior woman named Swan Circling, who is brave and fearless; traits Kaya wants to emulate to those around her. She tends to those who are wounded, brings fresh food to the horses and even goes into battles with the men of her community. Kaya believes that if she were as strong as Swan Circling, she would be able to find a way to save her blind sister, Speaking Rain. Kaya wants to be friends with Swan Circling very much. However, when she finds out that Swan Circling knows that the children call her Magpie, a nickname that she was given for being careless, she fears that Swan Circling won’t want to be friends. Then something horrible happens. How can Kaya help?

Kaya and Lone Dog When an unknown dog wanders near Kaya’s camp, everyone warns her to be careful. Most dogs do not live by themselves and most cannot be trusted. Kaya feels sympathy for the dog and brings it food who is grateful for her generosity. When the dog gives birth to puppies, Kaya is welcomed to be a part of her family. She feels that she can talk to the dog when looking into her eyes. Kaya’s grandmother tells her to listen when an animal speaks to her. When the puppies grow older, the dog has something to say and it isn’t something Kaya wants to hear.

Kaya Shows the Way It’s finally summer which means it’s time to fish for salmon at Celilo Falls. Summer also means it’s time for horse races, games, dancing and so much more! Kaya is excited to join in on the fun, but she wants to search for her lost sister, Speaking Rain who was captured by enemy raiders last year. With many families and friends gathering, Kaya is hopeful that someone will have news to share. While Kaya is excited to look for Speaking Rain, she is also sad. Her older sister, Brown Deer, is getting married soon. She already lost one sister when she escaped, will she lose another to marriage?

Changes for Kaya

Things are starting to go back to normal. Speaking Rain has finally returned to her family, but one thing is missing: her horse Steps High. When word comes that a herd of Nimíipuu, or Nez Perce, horses are running in the mountain, Kaya hopes Steps High might be one of them. When Kaya joins a hunting group into the mountains, she is excited and hopeful as she finally has a chance to search for Steps High. But her blind sister, Speaking Rain, is worried about the smell of smoke in the air--a mountain fire. As Kaya searches for Steps High, she is faced with a greater fear. What will Kaya do?

When Felicity visits the horse, she names her Penny, after the copper coin. But when Penny’s owner threatens Felicity when she visits, she is determined to save the horse from further abuse. What can Felicity do to free Penny without harming herself or her family?

Felicity Learns a Lesson

Felicity’s mother determines that she is old enough to learn to be a polite gentlewoman and is sent to Miss Manderly’s house. At Miss Manderely’s, Felicity learns stitchery, dancing, penmanship and the proper way to serve tea. While at Miss Manderly’s, she meets two young girls who have moved to Williamsburg from England. One of them, Elizabeth, becomes Felicity's best friend. Felicity and Elizabeth have fun at Miss Manderly’s, especially as they learn to serve tea. But when Felicity’s Father decides that he will no longer sell tea at his store or drink it at home due to the King’s tax on tea, Felicity is unsure of what to do. She wants to be loyal to her father, but loves her tea lessons with Elizabeth. What should Felicity do?

Felicity's Surprise It’s finally summer which means it’s time to fish for salmon at Celilo Falls. Summer also means it’s time for horse races, games, dancing and so much more! Happy Birthday, Felicity The snow is gone and spring has just arrived for Felicity’s tenth birthday. When Felicity disobeys her Mother and brings the guitar outside, her parents are disappointed and upset. But when Felicity overhears a conversation that could bring harm to her town, her parents deem her message false. Felicity is certain of what she heard and knows she must warn others. Will Felicity’s parents be upset with her again when she alerts the colonists? What will her parents think of her?

Felicity Saves the Day

Summer has arrived and Felicity will be spending it with her family at her Grandfather’s plantation, King’s Creek. She loves her Grandfather’s plantation because she can be outside all day riding horses, exploring the woods and playing with her siblings. When Felicity finds out that grandfather has purchased her beloved horse, Penny, she is overwhelmed with gratitude. While exploring, Felicity finds a note. It’s from Ben, her Father’s apprentice, who is hurt and has injured his leg. When Felicity finds Ben she becomes aware that he has broken his apprenticeship agreement with her father and is running away to join George Washington’s army. She is unsure of what to do but decides to help Ben. Felicity must use her strength, courage and wisdom to try and save the day.

Changes for Felicity It’s 1776 and it’s a new year with good news! Felicity’s beloved horse, Penny, is going to have a foal. But there is one thing worrying her—Penny’s old owner, Jiggy Nye. In the past, Jiggy Nye was cruel and abusive to Penny. Now that Felicity is bringing Penny home, will he harm her again? That’s not the only thing worrying her. Felicity’s family are Patriots and believe in independence for the colonies and from the king. But Elizabeth, Felicity’s best friend, and her family are Loyalists and loyal to the king. Living in Sackets Harbor, New York during the War of 1812, Caroline’s world is swept up when her Papa is taken prisoner from a British officer aboard her family’s sloop or boat. Caroline promises her Papa that she will stay strong and help Mama at home and at the shipyard until he returns. But when the British attack her village, Caroline is determined to help the Americans no matter what. Can Caroline help, even if the task is one she is unsure of?

Caroline’s Secret Message Caroline and her Mama decide to make a trip across Lake Ontario to visit Papa at the British fort where he is being held as a prisoner to bring him a secret message. However, when Mama is not allowed in, Caroline must deliver the message without the British knowing. The secret message should help Papa escape and return home, but Caroline is uncertain if she can deliver the message to Papa and if he will understand it. The only thing Caroline and Mama can do is wait and see if Papa will come home. When Caroline’s birthday arrives, a surprise brings a smile to her face.

A Surprise for Caroline It’s Christmas time and Caroline thought it would be great fun to have her best friend Rhonda and her cousin Lydia staying at her home for the season. However, Caroline realizes that Rhonda and Lydia have more in common with each other than they do with her. When Caroline encourages the girls to come outside to sled and ice skate, they decide to stay inside and style each other’s hair. Nothing seems to work, even a special Christmas gift from Caroline to Rhonda. With hurt feelings, Caroline makes a quick decision to go out on thin ice that puts all of them at risk. What can Caroline do to remedy the solution?

Caroline Takes a Chance Summer has just begun and Caroline is slowly waiting for the supply boats to arrive in Sackets Harbor. The very same supplies will help the family’s shipyard build boats to help fight the British, so it is important that they arrive sooner rather than later! When Caroline and her friends, Rhonda and Seth, decide to use Papa’s skiff, or small boat, to go fishing, they spot their first supply boat. However, when they realize that the boat is being cashed by the British they decide that they need to help. Caroline comes up with a plan that could work, but it is dangerous. She’s not sure if it will work or be a risk.. There’s no time—she must act now!

Caroline’s Battle

Caroline can’t believe it, Papa has returned home! But that’s not the only news—British warships are headed straight to Sackets Harbor to attack and all the men in the village must fight. That includes Papa who just returned home. Caroline and Mama are left to defend and guard the shipyard from the British. The one place that Caroline loves just as much as sailing with her Papa. She will do anything to protect it. But when things don’t look well, Mama decides there is only one thing to do. They must burn the shipyard to the ground in order to keep it away from the British. Caroline isn’t sure she can do it, but is she willing to do it to protect her village and her family from the British?

Changes for Caroline As summer continues, Caroline receives a letter from her uncle and aunt—to come and help on their new farm. Although sad to leave her family, Caroline is excited to see her cousin Lydia and her farm animals. Caroline is determined to help her extended family and their farm no matter what. When Caroline discovers a thief around the farm, she learns things are not as simple as they seem. What can she do to help? Josefina, 1824 Introduced to children in 1997, Josefina Montoya and her stories represent Mexican culture in Southwest America while under Mexican rulership in 1824. Renowned author, Valerie Tripp, wrote Josefina’s stories. Living on her family’s rancho near Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1824, Josefina and her sisters are struggling to come to terms with their Mama’s death and how to continue on without her. When Josefina discovers that Abuelito, her grandfather, is returning home after a trading trip, she can’t wait. Abuelito always has stories and treasures from his journey to share with everyone. When Abuelito brings a surprise none of them expected, will Josefina and her sisters be able to contain their excitement?

Josefina Learns a Lesson Everything seems to be going right when Tia Dolores returns to her family’s rancho until a flash flood comes and kills the family’s sheep. Tia Dolores suggests they start a weaving business to recover from their loss. Josefina is unsure of what to think—Mama would never have had an idea like that. Papa loves the idea and with the help of Tia Dolores, Josefina and her sisters learn and start to weave. When Tia Dolores decides that it is time for the girls to learn how to read, Josefina is excited! She starts to worry because Mama did not know how to read. Will reading and weaving make Josefina forget Mama?

Josefina's Surprise

It’s the first Christmas without Mama, and Josefina hopes that her family will be happy. However, those feelings are shattered when they discover that the Christmas altar cloth that their Mama embroidered, or sewed, has been damaged. Then when Josefina finds that the special doll her Mama made has disappeared, she is determined to find her. Soon Tia Dolores has an idea that can help heal the emotions the family is feeling. Soon their village and friends start to gather for an annual tradition called Las Posadas, an event that celebrates the journey that Mary and Joseph went on. When Josefina is asked to partake in the special tradition, she is unsure if she wants to participate. Josefina comes to find that the happiest memories can bring comfort during a difficult time.

Happy Birthday, Josefina Spring has finally arrived and Josefina is excited to find out that her godmother, Tia Magdalena, has come by and asked for her help with springtime chores. Tia Magdalena is a healer in the nearby village and Josefina dreams to become a healer just like her when she grows up. However, Josefina makes a mistake that crushes her dreams. Will Tia Magdalena forgive her and teach her the ways to heal? Josefina is surprised one morning when she is awoken by her family singing to her: it’s her birthday! Her sisters help Josefina dress for her birthday celebration and let her wear Mama’s shawl and use Mama’s fan. It’s even better when her family’s friends and neighbors show up to celebrate. It is definitely a birthday that Josefina will remember forever.

Josefina Saves the Day

It’s a big day for Josefina and her family. They have traveled to Santa Fe to trade the blankets the family had weaved after they lost their sheep in the flash flood last year. When Josefina finds out that an American wagon and traders will arrive, Josefina is excited! She has never seen or met an American before. Josefina is surprised when she meets a scout, who travels ahead of the wagon train, named Patrick. Although Josefina thinks Patrick’s manners are strange, she enjoys his presence and likes him. When Papa meets Patrick, he entrusts him with the family’s trade of blankets. But when he leaves town without paying Papa, Josefina is hurt. Then Josefina discovers something that she can use to help her family!

Changes for Josefina Christmas is almost over and Josefina and her family hold a party to celebrate. The party turns sour when they find out that Tia Dolores is leaving the rancho and returning home to take care of Abuelito and Abuelita. Josefina and her family are shocked. Josefina and her sisters want Tia Dolores to stay, but what can they do or say to make her stay? They make things worse after multiple attempts to keep her at the rancho, but there is only one person who can persuade Tia Dolores to stay—her Papa. Is there any way that Josefina can help?

CHARACTER MATTERS This article was originally published by American Girl in January 2018. Visit americangirl.com/explore to read the entire article and explore other articles. As parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, we yearn to nurture the children in our lives with things that are decent and good. We want them to grow up in a world where compassion, tolerance, and love are used as our first level of defense, not our last. We want them to know the simple truth that what we do and what we say to one another matters because Character matters.

For 35 years, American Girl has made a sincere effort to encourage and protect these important values— values that we know are at risk in a world where conflict and hate have become more interesting than harmony. Amid this noise and confusion, American Girl has worked hard to be a source of strength, optimism, and joy for ALL girls. The American Girl stories —featuring diverse characters from long ago and today—are written with intention and purpose, teaching girls about loss and love, about despair and hope, about caring and coping, about life and death—about the things young girls worry about; the things all of us worry about.

These are not larger-than-life heroines, but everyday girls who face real problems and who struggle and fail but find a way to persevere. To millions of girls, these characters have become role models—helping them think about their own character and what kind of person they want to be when life inevitably presents them with challenges and disappointment. Today, more than ever, our children need a place they can turn to that stands up for truth, fairness, and respect and lets them enjoy their childhood for as long as possible. We believe every girl has the right to trust in this kind of simple goodness—a goodness that has the power to change her and change the world. American Girl is proud to be that place for girls—a place where Character matters.

Cécile and Marie-Grace, 1853

Introduced to children in 2011, Cécile Rey, MarieGrace Gardener and their stories represent New Orleans and Free Blacks during the antebellum period and the 1853 yellow fever pandemic. Renowned authors Denise Lewis Patrick and Sarah Masters Buckey wrote Cécile and Marie-Grace’s stories. Cécile, Marie-Grace and their entire collection were archived in 2014. Meet Cécile Rey, a confident, outgoing and curious girl living in New Orleans in 1853. Cécile comes from a highly regarded and well-to-do family of free people of color and loves to perform. She dislikes her school lessons at home and would rather attend school with others. While at her voice lesson with her teacher, Mademoiselle Océane, Cécile meets Marie-Grace, a new girl who has just moved to New Orleans with her father. Meet Marie-Grace, a shy, kind and helpful girl who has just arrived in New Orleans with her father. Having left the city after her mother and younger brother died, Marie-Grace cannot believe how lively the city is. Will she ever feel like she belongs? When she meets Mademoiselle Océane, a talented opera singer and teacher, she meets Cécile Rey, one of her students. Could Cécile and Marie-Grace become friends, even though they come from two different worlds?

Cécile, Marie-Grace and Mardi Gras

Cécile and Marie-Grace can’t wait for Mardi Gras, a season of parties and costume balls just in New Orleans. Every year, Cécile and her friends would dress up in their best costumes for the Children’s Ball, the best party of the season. When Mademoiselle Océane lets both girls borrow costumes from her classroom, they both choose the beautiful fairy costumes. They look like twins! When Marie-Grace learns that free people of color have their own balls, she doesn't understand why that is. Why couldn’t both girls go to the same children’s ball? Cécile tells her that it’s always been this way. Cécile has a plan. Both balls will be at the same place and with their Mardi Gras masks, they could attend both balls. But would they get caught? There’s only one way to find out.

Cécile, Marie-Grace and the Orphans

The hot summer has approached and Marie-Grace and Cécile are best of friends! It seems that they can do anything together, especially their “switcheroo” at the Children’s Ball, and they wonder what their next adventure might be. While waiting for her father at home, Marie-Grace can’t believe what she finds at her doorstep: a baby. She hopes that her father will let the baby boy stay with them, but Marie-Grace finds out that the baby is in danger. A salve catcher is looking for him. Can MarieGrace and Cécile find a way to keep the baby safe from danger? Just when they think their plan will work, a rumor of yellow fever begins to find its way into the city. The girls start to wonder if anyone will be safe. Is there anything they can do?

Troubles for Cécile and Marie-Grace

Cécile and Marie-Grace love spending time and helping at a nearby orphanage. Together, the girls run around the courtyard with the children, teach them dominoes and jacks, and make up new games. The girls especially love to play with Phillip, the baby they saved earlier in the summer. Just when the girls thought everything was better, Cécile hears that the rumor of yellow fever comes true. The terrible and horrible sickness is spreading fast throughout the city. Many people are getting sick and dying. Soon the girls find out that sickness has struck the ones they love. Cécile’s older brother, Armand and the girl's singing teacher, Mademoiselle Océane, both have yellow fever. Cécile and Marie-Grace wonder if there is anything they can do to help the ones they love.

Cécile and Marie-Grace Make a Difference Marie-Grace and Cécile are very worried. The rumor of yellow fever is true and is ranging through the city of New Orleans. The disease has hit close to home, affecting Cécile’s older brother and the girl’s singing teacher, Mademoiselle Océane and the girls are unsure if they will recover.

When Marie-Grace finds out that the orphanage that she and Cécile volunteer at is becoming overcrowded, she is heartbroken. These children have lost their parents to this horrible disease. Soon they find out that her older brother is slowly recovering, but Mademoiselle Océane is still very sick. The girls are determined to help and make a difference, but will this sickness cause the girls to lose the ones they love?

Cécile and Marie-Grace's Gift With summer behind them and the horrible, devastating yellow fever slowly disappearing, Cécile and Marie-Grace feel like they can finally breathe a little better. Since summer, the girls have been volunteering every week at Holy Trinity Orphanage and love it. But now that there are more children at the orphanage, the girls wish they could do more to help. When Cécile and Marie-Grace hear that there will be a benefit to help raise money for all the orphans in New Orleans affected by yellow fever, they want to take part and do what they can to help. But what can they do or give to the orphans to help them feel better?

Kirsten, 1854 Introduced to children in 1986, Kirsten Larson and her stories represent mid-century settlement of the American “West” by White European immigrants and pioneers. But when Kirsten gets lost in a big city and loses her best friend, Kirsten starts to think America won’t feel like home. When Kisten and her family finally arrive at their new home, a farm on the frontier, she finally feels at home.

But when Miss Winston comes to live with her family, Kirsten can’t seem to escape school. When Kirsten meets Singing Bird, a Native American girl, her worries seem to fade away. They play, explore the woods, whistle like the birds and exchange gifts with one another. Singing Bird suggests that Kirsten should run away with her. Unsure of what to do, Kirsten decides to stay with her family and learns an important lesson about herself.

Papa and Kirsten finally make the trip to town to pick up the family trunks, but they get caught in a terrible blizzard. When Papa hurts his leg, it’s up to Kirsten to lead everyone—and the trunks—to safety. After the storm dies down, Kirsten and her Papa finally reach home. Realizing that it is Saint Lucia Day, Kirsten and her cousins quickly set everything up. What will her family think of the celebration? Addy, 1864 Introduced to children in 1993, Addy Walker and her stories represent African-Americans and slavery during the tail end of the Civil War and the early Reconstruction Era. Her stories take place in North Carolina and Philadelphia in 1864. Renowned author Connie Porter wrote Addy’s stories. With the help of Uncle Solomon and Auntie Lula, Addy and her Momma are given food and disguises before they start their journey to Philadelphia. When it’s decided that Addy’s baby sister, Esther won’t be escaping with them, Addy is heartbroken. Her only hope is that her family will be together again in their new home in Philadelphia once the Civil War is over.

Addy Learns a Lesson

Addy and her Momma have just arrived in Philadelphia as free people. With the help of her new friend, Sarah of Trinity AME Church, they are given a warm meal and help in finding work and a place to call home. Sarah’s mother introduces them to Mrs. Ford—a seamstress and owner of Ford’s Dress Shop. Mrs. Ford hires Momma on a trial basis and provides them with a small, furnished attic bedroom. Although the room is small, it has a window—something they didn’t have on the plantation. Now that Momma has a paying job, Addy can go to school and learn how to read, write and do arithmetic. When Addy arrives at Sixth Street School, she meets her new teacher, Miss Dunn, a kind and intelligent woman. Addy is seated next to Harriet, a smart, popular and wealthy girl. Addy hopes she can be friends with both Sarah and Harriet, but soon learns a lesson about friendship.

Addy's Surprise It’s Addy’s first Christmas as a free person and without her Poppa, brother Sam and baby sister Esther. She knows it will be hard for both her and her Momma, but when she spots a beautiful red scarf in a shop, Addy is determined to work hard and save her money to buy it for Momma and brighten the holiday. However, when Addy helps newly freed slaves at Trinity AME Church, Addy is torn between saving her money for Momma’s scarf or to help the newly freed slaves. Addy decides to donate her savings to the church to help other newly freed slaves, but when Mrs. Ford offers Addy a small job to make deliveries, she is rewarded with a brand new plaid dress. After heming it, Addy decides to use the scraps as a scarf for Momma. When Addy and Momma attend their first Christmas service as free people, they are surprised to find Poppa has arrived in Philadelphia. This turns out to be the best Christmas Addy could have hoped for.

Happy Birthday, Addy Spring has arrived in Philadelphia and now that Poppa has a job driving, Addy and her parents decide to move to a new home, a boarding house. At her new home, Addy makes a new friend named M’dear, an older blind woman who keeps Addy company after school. M’dear offers advice and even urges Addy to claim a day for her birthday. When M’dear becomes sick, Addy volunteers to go get her medicine at the drugstore. While out, she experiences prejudice and danger. Addy is upset and doesn’t understand why. Wasn’t she free now? When Addy returns, M’dear helps her understand the true meaning of freedom. When everyone finds out that the war has ended, Addy finally claims that day as her birthday.

Addy Saves the Day

Now that the Civil War has ended, many families are searching for their loved ones who were separated when they were enslaved—including Addy’s. When will Sam, Esther, Uncle Solomon and Auntie Lula arrive? Addy’s church decides to put on a fundrasier to help those who were hurt by the war. But Addy realizes that she has to work with Harriet, the same, snobby girl from her school. Addy and Harriet don’t get along until a tragedy strikes. Working together, the girls soon become friends and realize that the fair is a huge success. However, when they find out that the money they have raised has been stolen, the girls have to work together to save the day in order to help others. The day only gets better when Addy is surprised to see her brother, Sam! The war may have split Addy and her family, but they are slowly becoming a family again.

Changes for Addy

It’s been more than a year since Addy and her Momma left Master Steve’s plantation. Now living as freed people in Philadelphia, Addy and Momma have reunited with Poppa and Sam. But Addy is starting to give up hope that her entire family will be together. There has been no word on her baby sister Esther, Auntie Lula and Uncle Solomon. Suddenly, Poppa decides to travel back to North Carolina in search of them. When Addy gets word that Esther, Auntie Lula and Uncle Solomon are on their way, Addy starts searching for them. Addy’s search is mixed with joy and sadness. She has found her sister Esther and Auntie Lula, but Uncle Solomon has passed away. Soon Auntie Lula passes away too. Addy is asked to read the Emancipation Proclamation at church, but questions the words on freedom. But Momma reminds her that their family will always be together, regardless, as long as they keep their love in their heart.

The girls find Jip, but they also find Cornelia, who is speaking to a group of suffragists. Grandmary, who initially doesn’t care about voting, changes her mind when she hears Cornelia speak. Even Uncle Gard, Cornelia, Agnes and Agatha are joining them. While exploring, Samantha and the twins find a sketchbook made by Samantha’s mother. As Samantha turns the pages, she sees a waterfall on Teardrop Island that she and her parents had visited long ago before they passed away in a boating accident. The girls decide to visit the waterfall on the little island. However, things take a turn when a dangerous storm comes in. It’s up to Samantha to get everyone to safety and save the day.

Their parents have passed away and the orphanage is a terrible place. There is a threat that the girls will be split up and sent away. Determined not to let it happen, Samantha comes up with a plan for them to escape and live in the attic at Uncle Gard’s and Aunt Cornelia’s home. Creating a Character As a company devoted to developing strong, relatable characters that serve as role models for today’s girls, American Girl is committed to ensuring that every aspect of a character’s story and product world is authentic and accurate. As part of that meticulous process, our editors, authors, designers, and other members of our creative teams often rely on the generosity, expertise and guidance of character-specific advisory boards. Firsthand Accounts Board members can include historians and museum curators, cultural leaders, practicing professionals, and scholars. When possible, our advisory boards also include individuals who themselves experienced key events, like Melody board member Dr. JoAnn Watson, who grew up in Detroit during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Nanea, 1941 Introduced to children in 2017, Nanea Mitchell and her stories represent World War II, from the Pearl Harbor bombing to America’s official entry into the war, as well as HawaiianAmerican culture. Her stories take place in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1941. Renowned author Kirby Larson wrote Nanea’s stories. Meet Nanea, an ambitious, mature and caring girl living with her family on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Honolulu in 1941. Nanea’s life seemed to be going perfectly until the horrible attacks of Pearl Harbor. Everyone seems to be fearful and uncertain now that there are strict curfews and mandatory blackouts. Things suddenly don’t go the way Nanea thought: her best friend is forced to leave her home, her dog Mele goes missing and her brother decides to do his part and join the war. Nanea is determined to make things better for her, her family and her community by finding ways to share the aloha spirit. She starts by searching for Mele and finding new ways to bring cheer.

Nanea Learns a Lesson Nanaea may be the youngest in her family, but she still wants to “dip her paddle in” and help when needed. She loves to help her grandparents, Tutu Kane and Tuto, at their family store, Pono’s Market. Nanea knows she’s grownup enough to help at Pono’s Market, but what can she do to prove that she’s ready for more responsibility? When she witnesses the planes attacking Pearl Harbor, Nanea quickly grows up. Now that America has entered the war, her family has to go through different safety precautions such as blackout drills. She has to sacrifice fun times with her family such as a fishing trip with her father and possibly giving up her dog, Mele. She longs and realizes how much she wishes she could go back to being a child again.

Nanea and Hula Dancing

With the attacks at Pearl Harbor, Nanea’s big brother, David, wants to do his part and help. He starts by volunteering at the hospital, but with his work commitment at the hotel, there are talks that David might join the army once he turns 18. Nanea cannot bear the thought of him leaving home and fighting in the war. Would he be safe? Would he return home? With the many changes at home, Nanea turns to hula dancing. Dancing always made her feel better—no matter what was going on. When her hula school has the opportunity to dance at the USO to cheer up soldiers, she feels that she is contributing to the war effort. But is there more that she can do?

Nanea Performs Nanea is excited to perform at the annual USO Christmas show and tell the story of Princess Liliuokalani of the Hawaiian Kingdom. She especially loves that her grandmother, Tuto, is teaching her and her friends a new dance just for the show. She usually wore her older sister's holoku, or floorlength dress, at special events. But when Mom surprises Nanea with her very own holoku that has a long train, she can’t wait to wear it at the annual USO Christmas show for the soldiers. Will the sailors and soldiers enjoy the show? Nanea is about to find out!

Nanea and the Beach Before the attack at Pearl Harbor, Nanea and her family used to enjoy picnics at the beach, building sandcastles with her brothers, fishing with Papa and playing outside in the evening. She especially loved it when she went to the beach with her friends Donna and Lily. The days at the beach were even better when snacks were involved! Nanea and her friends, Donna and Lily, loved to stop by the corner shop for a traditional Hawaiian treat: shave ice! Her favorite flavor, strawberry, always made her tongue barbershop red. Nanea hopes things will go back to normal soon so she can enjoy the beach with her family and friends again.

Changes for Nanea

School is about to start up again and Neana hopes that going back will make life seem somewhat normal again. But the war and the attacks on Pearl Harbor have changed everything, including her teacher, Miss Smith’s classroom. The worst part: her best friend Donna is gone. She had to leave Hawaii because the government says she is nonessential. Though many things have changed since the attacks, Nanea has been determined to do her part just like her family has. From hula dancing for the soldiers at the USO, babysitting during the Red Cross first-aid class and collecting over 1,500 bottles to help collect and store donated blood. Can Nanea inspire others to do their part for the war effort?

MEET THE BEST FRIENDS Part of this article was originally published by American Girl Wiki in 2021. Visit americangirl.fandom.com to read the entire article and explore other articles. Who They Are The Best Friend Characters are companion characters to the main Historical Characters. Although not given their own unique time periods, they share the same era and stories of the characters they are paired with. Best Friends are prominent characters in their companion's stories. However, each Best Friend’s story shows a different aspect of the same time period due to differences in their backgrounds and situations.

Elizabeth Cole, Emily Bennet, Smithens were released as a tie-in upcoming movie of their companion. was released with the initial debut Albright.

Ruthie to their Ivy Ling of Julie

Their Collection Best Friends were given much smaller collections than the Historical Character they were paired with. Though they were never displayed in the Historical Character's personal outfits, they were marketed as being part of (and thus being able to share) the collection of their companion. Collections were also tied together; when Samantha's collection was archived, Nellie and her collection were as well. This was also true for Felicity and Elizabeth, and Molly and Emily.

History of the Line The Best Friend line debuted in 2004 with the release of Nellie O’Malley, Samantha’s best friend, who was released to coincide with the first American Girl movie, Samantha: An American Girl Holiday. Nellie is a main character in both the movie and Samantha’s stories. While advertised as a limited edition doll, due to positive reception, American Girl decided to keep Nellie as a permanent extension of Samantha’s collection. This prompted the expansion of the Best Friend line to include other characters.

The End of the Line In 2014 American Girl announced that the remaining best friends available for purchase-Ivy and Ruthie--would be archived, effectively ending the Best Friends line. One of the many official responses from American Girl was that they were seeking to return the focus to the main characters themselves. You can still enjoy the Best Friends line by viewing them on exhibit with their companion in the museum. We look forward to sharing more of our Best Friends collection in the future.

Courtney, 1986

Introduced to children in 2020, Courtney Moore and her stories represent the feminist, technological and societal changes in America, as well as the start of the AIDS pandemic in the mid-1980s. Her stories take place in the fictional city of Orange Valley, California in 1986. Renowned author Kellen Hertz wrote Courtney’s stories. Meet Courtney Moore, a determined, independent gamer growing up with her blended family in Orange Valley, California in 1986. Things at home are changing, especially when her Mom decided to run for Mayor. Because of her Mom’s campaign, everyone at home is helping with chores such as cleaning and watching her little brother, Rafi. When she’s not at home, Courtney is the highest-scoring player at the arcade playing her favorite game, Pac-Man. Though she doesn’t understand why there aren’t more female characters when she plays. But when Courtney is given a chance to create her own game at school, she is excited. She is determined to create a female superhero!

Courtney and the Arcade

Courtney loves everything sci-fi, from playing video games at Smiley’s Arcade to watching movies with her step-dad, she loves it all. She especially loves the movies, The Goonies and the space opera, Star Wars. When she finds out that a school teacher is going into space for the first time on the Space Shuttle Challenger, she is excited to see history in the making. Courtney is ready for the best adventure ever— just like her video game hero she created, Crystal Starshooter. She often daydreams about Crystal’s world and what it would look like, but Crystal is everything that she hopes for in a female superhero and role model—brave, bold and doesn’t back down from doing what’s right!

Courtney Learns a Lesson

As Courtney starts to design and create her own game at school, she is determined to create a female hero. She’s inspired by the women in her life and the women she looks up to—her Mom, who is running for mayor and the astronaut, Christia McAuliffe, a teacher who is training to go to space. These two role models show Courtney what it means to be bold and take risks. As Courtney and her class get ready to celebrate the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenge and Christia McAuliffe as the first teacher astronaut in space, they learn of the Challenger explosion. Courtney is upset and as she learns to deal with her feelings, she truly understands the risk of doing something new and the courage it takes to be bold.

Courtney and Tina

One thing Courtney longs for is to get along with her stepsister, Tina. When they were younger, they used to play together, ride bikes, play with their My Little Pony toys and swim in the pool. Now that Tina is older, all she seems to do is push and dismiss Courtney. Things only got rocky when their younger half-brother Rafi was born, and when Courtney moved into Tina’s room that she had since she was little. Now that Courtney shared her room with Tina, she hopes that things will slowly start to get better. Tina is neat and tidy—always putting her clothes away and picking up, but Courtney is...well...not clean. She likes to keep her things close to her such as her phone, Pleasant Company catalog and books! Courtney and Tina realize that they’ve become more like family now that they are spending more time in their room together.

Courtney’s Surprise

Courtney doesn’t care or consider herself a “doll girl,” until she stumbles across a Pleasant Company catalog with a doll on it. These aren’t the typical dolls like Cabbage Patch Kids or Barbie, these dolls looked like real girls. Courtney starts to connect with Molly, a girl growing up in 1944 during World War II. Molly’s father is serving overseas as a military doctor and misses him dearly. Courtney also misses her Dad and wishes they could visit often. Until just recently, she would spend every weekend at her Dad’s house, but now that he has moved, Courtney only sees her Dad once a month. When she has the opportunity to visit her Dad for a longer holiday visit, she is excited. She’s totally surprised when Dad gives her an early Christmas gift: a Molly doll from the brand-new Pleasant Company.

Courtney Makes a Difference

Courtney’s favorite place to hang out is Orange Valley Mall! It’s especially the best place to hang during the hot afternoons after school since it has air-conditioning. Plus, there is so much to do such as playing PAC-MAN at the arcade with her best friends, Kip and Sarah, and visiting her step-father’s store, D’Amico Electronics. When Courtney meets a new boy named Issac at the arcade, they become best friends. Issac has great ideas about Courtney’s Crystal Starshooter game. When Issac doesn’t show up at the arcade, Courtney worries. She soon finds out that Issac is fighting his own battle—a battle called HIV. Courtney supports him and wants to help, but doing so puts her friendship with Sarah at risk. She’s unsure what to do. What would Crystal Starshooter do?

MY FRIEND, SAMANTHA. BY: BLAKE CHANGNON, CEO, PRESIDENT AND CO-FOUNDER OF THE MUSEUM My relationship with the American Girl characters, especially with Samantha - and even with toys themselves - began when I was a child. However, this relationship was formed out of a need for comfort as I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Being abused as a child robbed me of my childhood. I lost my innocence, my imagination, my carefree attitude that all children are entitled to have. Because of this, I found a liking to toys. Toys allowed me to care and protect the things I loved. My love for toys only grew from then on–through middle school, high school, college and even today. My collection of American Girl dolls has helped and continues to help me overcome the obstacles of my past, present and future. But the one character that helped me the most was Samantha.

Samantha

Parkington. Samantha is an orphan who was raised by her wealthy grandmother in New York in 1904. Samantha is characterized in her books as loyal, giving, helpful and wants the best for her family and friends. Her friends consider her a "life-saver" because she's "all heart and ready to help others." But Samantha is also fun and loves to laugh. I see a lot of myself in Samantha when I read her books, and still see myself in her as an adult. Not only do I resonate with Samantha, but I resonate with all of the American Girl characters. Their stories continue to teach me many real-life lessons.

Not only do I resonate with Samantha, but I resonate with all of the American Girl characters.

Specifically, the American Girl characters have taught me empathy for others, resilience from difficult and sometimes horrible situations, friendship for others who are similar and different from me, and selfconfidence for what I believe is right and wrong.

Their stories continue to teach me many real-life lessons Blake Changnon, CEO, President and CoFounder of CPMTC

The company, the characters, the mission and the vision have crafted who I am today and who I want to be tomorrow. I am happy that I can share my story and a small sample of my collection. I hope that my collection can inspire you to be the best that you can be.
