Early history records the The Cumbraes as “The Isles of the Virgins” and St Maura lived on the island around 546AD and was known to have run a hospice here. Some eight centuries later and after 400 years of holding the Western Isles and the Cumbraes, Hakon, a Viking nobleman was to watch from the island as his fleet was defeated in the Battle of Largs in 1263. Over the centuries since then, this island and the town of Millport have developed into a unique tourist destination. It is the home to the smallest Cathedral in the UK, the Scottish National Sailing School, and an internationally renowned Marine Research Station.
