GI Case Challenges

GI Case Challenges Gastroenterology patients probably form a large part of your caseload in small animal practice. They can present as acute life threatening cases demanding immediate and effective diagnosis and treatment, through to chronic cases where you can make a more leisurely diagnosis. During this course we will use clinical case studies to develop a logical approach to the diagnosis of your acute and chronic GI cases. What you’ll learn: • How to interpret blood results for gut, liver and pancreatic assessment • How to interpret radiographs, contrast studies and ultrasound • Gross endoscopic findings and histopathology; what do they show? • Current treatment protocols; options and effectiveness • Treatment regimes for liver disease, pancreatitis, EPI, IBD, ARD

Medicine

Management of liver and pancreatic disease can be challenging in first opinion practice. Patient management raises many questions that you need to answer to make appropriate decisions. For example, are steroids indicated in the treatment of liver disease? Do all cats with liver disease require antibiotics? What is the optimal diet for an animal with chronic liver disease? How should you manage a patient with acute necrotising pancreatitis? This course will address these, and many other questions, whilst also discussing the major diseases that affect the liver and pancreas in dogs and cats, and current treatment recommendations.

While most dogs and cats present with ‘typical’ generalised seizures, others may present with a range of unusual seizure activity. Recognition of such ‘atypical’ presentations and differentiation with nonepileptic seizure events is a pre-requisite in the diagnostic approach. In this session, we’ll provide you with the essential practical aspects of the neurological examination of epileptic patients, step-by-step diagnostic tests to consider and the rationale behind the use of anti-epileptic treatment. Reptiles are becoming increasingly presented in practice. Larger pet suppliers are now selling reptiles to customers and these will be presented to the local veterinary surgeons. Are you ready for these patients? The level of care and understanding that clients expect is becoming increasingly demanding. Knowledge of appropriate husbandry is a vital component to enable appropriate care and treatment and as the veterinary surgeon you have to advise the owner on the suitability of their care at home. Being able to identify common conditions and investigate common presenting signs is an important part of reptile medicine. If you are working with small animals in practice and you would like to improve your skills at treating reptiles, then this is the course for you.
