A Winner’s Choice!

Following last year’s success, this headline was chosen a bit of tongue in cheek. But then again, a Connemara Pony managed to win the most prestigious in hand title of the year in Finland, so it is righteous!

Beautifully aged broodmare Rockfield Scaramé trotted into the final ring and was first chosen as the best veteran pony (over 18 years of age) of all breeds. She then stayed in the ring to wait for the best ponies of all the other breeds to line up with her. And she was the best one of them all! Rockfield Scaramé is one of the last remaining daughters of Kåsta Scaramouche, a Swedish bred stallion, who was imported to Finland in 1982, to first serve as a riding school pony. He was by Blue Chief, whose sire was Roundstone Chief, number 1 in Swedish stallion stud book.

Scaramé’s dam Ametist was imported in utero from Sweden, and is by Kimble. The dam line goes back to the productive mare Little Nell CPBS 988 (by Silver Pearl), born in 1943 and bred by Val Gorham in Truska, Ballyconneely. She bred 14 foals between 1949 and 1968 - all fillies. Her family can be found all over the world, from France and Denmark all the way to Canada.

Rockfield Scaramé was bred in 1995 by mother and daughter Maj-Gret and Merja Nurmi. She was the first of the 15 ponies they have bred so far, so it was a moment full of emotions for the two ladies to win the prestigious show title. She has so far produced two approved stallion sons and three daughters.

With this in mind: A Connemara truly is A Winner’s Choice! Only three Connemara ponies had managed to achieve the Best In Show title in the 36 years of the National Pony Show of all breeds before. These three were mare Espe Etta, who was born 1973, and bred by the late Olof Wallin of Espoo Manor, the first significant breeder of Connemara ponies in Finland. Etta was by Cocum Tiger Moth out of Espe Aletta (Murrisk) and was the all breeds Best in Show in 1983.

Beautifully aged broodmare Rockfield Scaramé trotted into the final ring and was first chosen as the best veteran pony (over 18 years of age) of all breeds.

Her daughter Caragh Elaine Aisling repeated the achievement in 2002. She was bred by Tuula Pyöriä’s Caragh Stud, and was born in 1988. She was by Kåsta Scaramouche, just like the 2013 Champion Rockfield Scaramé.

In 2012 mare Coneridge Kathleen, born 2004 and bred by Mari Talvio joined these two mares. She became the third Connemara Pony to win the all breeds Best In Show title.

She is by Innellan Kestrel, the British bred stallion, now gelded, who spent three seasons in Finland. Kathleen is out of Irish bred Kate (by Killyreagh Kim). Kate herself was the Champion at the Finnish Connemara Pony Breed Show in 2005, 21 years old. Coneridge Kathleen has so far bred two foals, by Ard Ri Cunga and Fairyhill Fort, both gelded. She comes from another productive mare family, Retreat CPBS 320.

Kathleen’s championship title earned Mari Talvio of Coneridge Stud the title of the breeder of the year 2012. Kate passed away some years ago, but recently Woolpacks Sweetie Pie (by Janus out of Bolle Cornett, by Lukas) became the newest addition to the Coneridge Stud. Sweetie Pie was the Finnish Connemara Show Supreme Champion 2010. Another mare, Coneridge Catriona, added to the Coneridge breeder points by winning classes in 2012. Second in the breeders’ Championship was Tuula Pyöriä’s Caragh Stud with the excellent show results and inspection scores of her three broodmares Emer, Ernine and Grian.

In total, 19 mares were inspected this year, most of them achieved class 1 and all of them passed the inspection. Two mares were only rewarded with the 3rd premium, which means even though they would otherwise met the criteria for Class 1, their poor inspection score (conformation & movement) only earned them Class 2 status.

Stallion inspection was a bit of a disaster in 2013. All pony breeds’ inspections were to take place during one weekend in mid April, which is in every case a little too late in the breeding season. But this year the inspection premises had been contaminated by equine herpes virus, and as a precaution the inspections were postponed till late May.

Of the six Connemara colts originally entered for the April inspections, only three turned up for the later date. One of them didn’t clear the vet check and was said to be lame. We hope to see this stallion, seven year old Vanity Padraigh (by Janus out of Tempelisa Lady Calista, by Ard Ri Cunga), again next year, as he was now to renew his earlier limited period breeding licence into a lifetime one, in accordance to the new rules. His earlier offspring has proven to be first class and has done well in both in hand shows and youngstock assessments. 24 • An Capaillín 2014

Later in the year the Society organised a Working Hunter Pony and Ridden Class competition, where Connemaras were well presented and won both the Championships.

Another stallion now inspected for the second and last time was Halle Lafferty, bred in Sweden by Ingrid Hallengård. He is six years old and by Coosheen Finbarr out of Lofty Hazy Rambler (Frederiksminde Hazy Chance). He was inspected Class 1 for life. The only first timer at the inspection was the golden dun four year old Ohana Domhnall Dash, by Ashfield Cathal Crobdhearg out of Aramara Eliza (Ardnasillagh O’Flaherty), the dam being Connemara Breed Show Supreme Champion in 2012. He is owned and bred by Hanna Asklöf, and was inspected to Class 2. The end of 2012 also brought a sad news in the stallion front. One of the most significant stallions in Finnish breeding, Ard Ri Cunga, had passed away in November, 22 years old. He left 49 foals in Finland, and another 25 in Ireland before he was exported. His bloodlines continue through his daughters, and through his son, Rockfield Scarface.

Rockfield Scarface is out of the above mentioned Champion mare Rockfield Scaramé, and has spent two seasons in Sweden. His rich dun colour has earned him a lot of admirers! Competition wise no big titles were earned this year. The Pony Breeders competition only saw Connemaras in the end half of the record sheet. But we were all delighted to see a Connemara as the Junior Champion at the Quality Pony Contest. 26 • An Capaillín 2014

Three year old filly KZE Lena by Lockinge Frederick out of Edenwoods Cassiopeia Cashel went on to show the best overall conformation, movement and jumping skills of the lot at the Quality Pony Contest. Congratulations to her breeder Talli Konstanze, and to the owner Sanna Ruotsalainen! Mind you, she only beat stallion prospect Goldrock Laddie (Golddigger Laddie Sparrow Melody, Grange Surf Sparrow) by 0,01 points!

There is very much empty space for Connemara ponies in the performance field in Finland. Large parts of results sheets in show jumping are filled by ponies bred in Ireland but without recorded pedigree. Connemara ponies were proudly represented in national jumping by stallion Doyher Bay Boy (Symphatil Hazy Becks - Golden Ashlair, Westside Mirah) with Janet Virkki, and in eventing by beautiful bay roan mare The Next Best Thing (Symphatil Hazy Becks - Aglaija, Ardnasillagh O’Flaherty) and Karoliina Ahlbom. Blue eyed cream mare Hagelunds Vanillah (Innellan Kestrel - Hagelunds Indiana, by Millfields ensign) was the Ridden Champion, and her rider Mikaelina Lagström - one of the few 2nd generation Connemara breeders in Finland - won the prize for best turn out. Champion Working Hunter was Edenwoods Cassiopeia Cashel (Monaghanstown Pat - Ellabelles Cashel, by Cloonisle Cashel), ridden by Hanna Asklöf. Finally, all breeding has gone down in Finland this year, but Connemaras are not in the worst position. With only 16 pure bred Connemara foals born in 2013, 29 Connemara mares were covered by Connemara stallions, so the trend is surprising. Let’s hope it stays the same way!
