Lakeland College 'The Round Up' 2021

Page 1

Welcome The 2020-2021 Student Managed Farm Purebred Unit powered by New Holland would like to extend a warm welcome and invitation to our new and improved annual sale, now called The Round-Up, on March 27, 2021. Our sale this year will look a little different as we are partnering with the SMF Equine Unit to include AQHA geldings. We are very excited about this opportunity and believe it adds a new dynamic to our annual sale! We, as a team, believe that this year’s set of bulls and heifers are an extraordinary group that showcase the quality of our program. Our bulls are developed with longevity in mind. They are fed to meet their potential and to emphasize muscle development and fertility. We have decided to offer 5 open replacement heifers this year. As a team we believe that these females have the ability to be very competitive in the show ring as well become foundation females for any herd. The OAV cow herd was established in 1938. Females that have been retained to develop the herd, are held up to the highest standards of quality to ensure long lasting and efficient cattle. Over the years our cow herd has been developed by focusing on structurally sound females that are thick and easy doing with high quality udders. By using these selection principles in our herd, we believe that the calves we produce can enter any operation and make positive, long lasting impacts. As a group, we are proud to have these calves on offer and look forward to showing them to you. We are extremely excited to present this outstanding group, as well as a new sale name and format. As a team we would like to wish everyone a safe, healthy year and a successful calving season!

OAV Holly of Veralta 6H is a deep, powerful heifer that offers great maternal strength. Her genetics go back to the Laura cow family, which was the building blocks of our herd. You will notice this heifer from across the pen with her correct conformation and big frame. 6H has great feet, a straight top line, and smooth shoulders which results from genetics of this caliber. She offers great performance and the ability to gain weight efficiently. This heifer will be an excellent addition to any breeding program.

14 | Lakeland College #TheRoundUp

This heifer OAV Holly of Veralta 1H has stuck out for our team from the beginning. She is the perfect combination of style and performance. This heifer goes back to the Laura cow family, a foundation female that has built our herd. She was entered in Virtual Agribition and was declared Champion Black Angus Heifer Calf. This heifer really has it all, great depth of body and overall capacity. She has perfect feet and legs and is smooth shouldered. This heifer is halter broke and we believe that she will be a real asset to someone’s herd and has great potential to be a future junior project.

She is an embryo calf that traces back to Pedersen Livestock where her mother MJT Dark Duchess 239P, has consistently produced high quality calves. This heifer is long bodied and square hipped. She has great depth through her middle and brings power but also remains feminine. She has a great hind leg with a solid foot underneath her and moves extremely well. We believe this heifer possesses qualities that would make her a solid foundation female for any herd.

EQUINE UNIT

The Equine Unit is new to Student Managed Farm, powered by New Holland for the 2020/2021 academic year. Equine Students are excited to be joining with the Purebred and Commercial Beef units this year to hold the first annual Student Managed Farm, Round Up Sale presented by Lakeland College. We are proud to offer a great selection of 3 and 4-year-old prospects for this year’s sale! The Students have worked hard training these colts under saddle since September 2020. The SMF geldings have had rope work from the time they were started, roped the heel-o-matic, penroped live cattle, drug logs, crossed obstacles and tarps, carried flags, tarps and slickers, have been started on barrels and worked live cattle in and out of the arena. Our goal is to produce versatile well started Quarter Horse prospects that will work well in both rodeo and western events or simply as great using horses at home on the ranch. Just like the students, these geldings have bright futures in the Equine Industry! We look forward to seeing everyone on sale day and invite you to contact the Equine Unit for the opportunity to come view or ride the geldings prior to the sale!

As the Student-Managed Farm Powered by New Holland Livestock Research Unit we sustainably manage an extensive grazing cow herd and collect information to practically apply management practices in the industry. We help with the trials that the researchers on campus are running as well as test our own management strategies. We manage the business, logistics, and well being of all trial animals. We are an extensive herd which means that we try to keep our handling down to a minimum. We have a 365-day grazing plan where the cattle graze pasture from the day the snow melts to the day snow hits the ground. Bale grazing and corn grazing are our winter feeding strategies. The replacement heifers are put into a residual feed intake (RFI) trial shortly after they are weaned.

20 | Lakeland College #TheRoundUp

We decided to corn graze this year over Christmas to help maintain the body condition scores (BCS) of our cows. Grazing corn also helps reduce production and labour costs. The cobs provide high energy calories and the stock balances it off for the roughage component. They had a five-day paddock rotation for better feed utilization

For bale grazing first semester, we put out enough feed to last the cows four days in separate, fenced off paddocks. This feed included a mix of hay and barley green feed. This was done to fully utilize the feed and minimize waste by forcing the cows to clean up the feed. In the second semester, we have decided to strategically place bales out onto pasture to last our cows seven days.

For our branding demo, we used our 15 replacement heifers. Five heifers received a brand with meloxicam, which is a pain killer, five were branded without meloxicam, and the remaining five were are controls so they have no brand or meloxicam. As a team, we checked and did objective observations for two 15 increments per day. We recorded behavioral findings, feed intake, and feed behaviours. Thermal imaging was also implemented on the day of branding, 24 hours after, and one week after. We decided to do this demo to see if it is more economically viable to use pain medication and the effects of animal welfare.

Our 15 replacement heifers were put onto an RFI trial three weeks after they were weaned and it lasts 51 days. By doing the RFI trial we can accurately see the average daily gain (ADG) and the feed efficiency of our heifers. This allows us to choose more economically efficient replacement heifers for years to come. RFI could also be used to monitor if this trait is heritable in the herd.
